It was a time of high tension, fierce back-and-forth, and a relentless pursuit to dominate the world--and that was just between Coke and Pepsi. When you throw the Cold War into the mix, not only do you get a tumultuous time period, but the Cola Wars ramped up to another level. For Pepsi, a way to compete against Coke was to gain a foothold in the Soviet Union. And that's exactly what they did--but little did anyone know just how big they would become in the USSR.  This is a look back at Pepsi's remarkable growth in the Soviet Union in the 80s, the continuous battle against Coca-Cola, and then one of the most remarkable business deals in history. Had Pepsi, for a short while, actually become a military power... War Games movie Review: Patreon.com/80s

It's a battle that's been going on for well over a century featuring two of the biggest brands of all time. But in the 1980s--the war really heated up... Today we look back on the battle between Coke and Pepsi during a transformative time for not just the two colas, but for society in general. It's the story that involves some of the most iconic commercials of all time, a nationwide taste test challenge (that may have been unfair), a whole new generation, and the King of Pop. The Cola Wars of the 80s also include a war within a war, as the diet cola market (thanks to the shady approval of one of the most controversial food additives in history) grew bigger than ever.  It's the story of cocaine, brand identity, buying a feeling, the incredible importance of being "cool," and one of the biggest corporate blunders in history... and it all played out during the 1980s. At the height of the Cola Wars in the mid-90's, Pepsi committed one of the most notorious PR and marketing fiascos of all-time. An eye-catching spot promised brand fans that, if they saved up 7 million Pepsi Points, they could win a Harrier fighter jet. However, no one at Pepsi or their ad agency ever expected anyone to try to claim that prize. And when Washington business school student John Leonard did, they faced a multi-year legal battle and a storm of negative publicity. Now, almost three decades later, another beverage company has spoofed that infamous campaign—with a twist. Canned water brand Liquid Death actually bought a jet for one lucky fan to win, and executed a wildly successful promotion to support the contest. So in this episode, we're talking to Liquid Death VP of Creative Andy Pearson about the logistics of making that happen. We discuss Liquid Death's unique approach to marketing, his creative influences, and why they would even want to try to recreate the publicity stunt that lost Pepsi the Cola Wars. And with Jeff Beer from Fast Company, we explore the background and takeaway lessons of the Pepsi Harrier Jet fiasco.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rerun: Virgin Cola, Sir Richard Branson's ultimately flawed contender in the Cola Wars, was certainly taken seriously by the competition. On 11th October 1994, a pokerfaced Coca-Cola spokesperson told The Independent: “Consumers consistently demonstrate, when given a free choice, that they prefer our product. ”Despite an extensive publicity campaign - including a stunt in Times Square, a bottle shaped like Pamela Anderson, and product placement on ‘Friends' - the beverage never took off internationally, but did have success in the UK and Bangladesh, before being discontinued in 2009. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider Coke's ‘gangster' tactics; sympathise with Branson's children and their classmates; and question why the maverick billionaire just wasn't able to disrupt the cola market as he'd hoped… Further Reading: • ‘How Richard Branson Took On Coca-Cola' (Intrigue Academy, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-PaJkPTQYk • ‘What Richard Branson learned when Coke put Virgin Cola out of business' (CNBC, 2017): https://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/07/what-richard-branson-learned-when-coke-put-virgin-cola-out-of-business.html • ‘Sir Richard Branson's setbacks: from Virgin Cola to Virgin Brides' (The Guardian, 2014): https://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/oct/06/sir-richard-branson-failures-vigin-cola-brides ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Source: Andrew Tindall in The Drum Link: https://www.thedrum.com/opinion/2024/09/02/dr-pepper-just-overtook-pepsi-could-coca-cola-be-next The Background: Coke, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper once dominated the U.S. soda market, but by the end of 2023, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper were tied with an 8.3% market share. Dr. Pepper's success is due to both its own strategy and Pepsi's failures. Case #1 - Branding & Rebranding: While Coca-Cola maintained a consistent brand identity, Pepsi underwent multiple major redesigns. Dr. Pepper, launched in 1885, kept its unique positioning, benefiting from a distinct brand and flavor profile. The brand leveraged its unique classification as a "Pepper Soda" to expand its distribution network. The Cola Wars: Pepsi focused on taste tests and high-profile campaigns, including controversial ads, while the overall market saw a shift towards bottled water and diverse flavors. Pepsi emphasized zero sugar and snacks. Dr. Pepper's Strategy: Unlike its competitors, Dr. Pepper avoided the "Cola Wars" and focused on its distinctiveness, committing to an eSOV (excess share of voice) strategy and consistently improving ad quality. As Gen Z becomes the key demographic, Dr. Pepper continues to focus on its 139-year-old positioning as a unique blend of 23 flavors while adapting its creative approach to resonate with younger consumers. We Play Different - The North Face Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7qHeUak1RU&list=TLGGQEylHYKkXDwxMDA5MjAyNA&t=18s Agency: B-Reel The North Face aimed to reconnect with its core audience across fashion and outdoor sports while appealing to a younger demographic unfamiliar with its heritage. Campaign narrative and execution The campaign, "We Always Have Your Back," utilizes storytelling and visual spectacle to bridge The North Face's legacy in extreme outdoor exploration with its contemporary status as a streetwear icon. If you drink soda or pop if you prefer, you're probably familiar with the cola wars. This battle has been going on for decades between Coke and Pepsi. Most people fall into either one of the two camps. You're either a Coke person or a Pepsi person. But the cola wars are on hold, at least for a while. There's a new player in this war that's not actually a cola; it's Dr. Pepper. For the first time, Dr. Pepper has climbed into the number 2 position in soft drink popularity. It only beat Pepsi by a fraction of a point, but this ranking is something no one ever thought possible... In the sugar-fueled '90s, Pepsi had one goal: win the Cola Wars. But when it launched “Pepsi Stuff", an ambitious promotion that encouraged people to buy Pepsi and redeem points for prizes, they overlooked their own fine print. When they promised a military-grade plane for less than it was worth "as a joke," Pepsi never imagined somebody might try to actually snag it. After an enterprising dude from Seattle gamed the points system, Pepsi was on the hook for…a jet.Kel Mitchell (Kenan & Kel, Good Burger 2) and Tehran Von Ghasri (The Persian Bachelorette) join Misha to pop the lid on Pepsi Stuff.Follow The Big Flop on the Wondery app or wherever you get your podcasts. In 1993, the Coke vs Pepsi "Cola Wars" were raging. Which soda pop would dominate taste buds and consumer loyalty across the globe? We're not sure how attuned to history you might be, but just FYI, there were other things going in the world too - in The Philippines for instance. They had just had a hugely controversial election and devastating nature disasters when Pepsi fumbled the ball at the one yard line and set off a deadly series of marketing blunders. And Pepsi Clear was the least of them. Enjoy the show. Support the show by signing up at www.patreon.com/murielsmurders or on Spotify. Ryan and Matt start off by taking on an r/AskReddit question about the soundtrack in Hell, before taking on a hellishly tumultuous family feud pitting two golden children against their jealous siblings in the Case of the Stolen In-laws which comes to us courteous of r/AmItheAsshole. Then they take a dip into a purported image of Presidential loser Donald Trump rescuing cats from dangerous flood waters found on Facebook. Then they wrap up the episode with a pair of insane topics that prove that capitalism can make even the softest drinks go hard with death squads and naval armadas.

The time has finally come... we've made it to the end of the song. This episode description is being written on a tearstained laptop as we speak. But we PROMISE we're going out with a very fizzy bang. The cola wars was a tense battle between soda giants Coca Cola and Pepsi, as they tried to be crowned the hippest, Americanest, tastiest cola. But it's also the epitoment of American capitalism and the power of brands. So who won the war? What the hell was New Coke? And who wins in the battle of Madonna v George Michael? Plus there's a cola taste test and a whole lotta reminiscing. Thanks for joining us listeners, we hope you enjoy ❤️‍
