Music Story - The Beatles "Help !"

With the 2023 tour in our rearviewmirror, we're pushing forward back as this episode features a great show from Prague at the end of the Lightning Bolt tour run. Seeing as we are now officially finished with the Gigaton run, we thought it would be a good idea to take both of these tour years and see how they compared before embarking on a new era. It's interesting to look at side by side because at the show in Prague, the crowd was treated to many crowd favorite rarities such as Tremor Christ, Brain Of J., Love Boat Captain and Help Help. That's not far off from what we were just treated to! Of course the sets were a little longer in 2018, but we're going to get into why certain things have needed to be adjusted as the band gets older. While people may remember 2018 for the Home/Away shows, the massive show in Rome or even the London make-up show, this Prague show should be right up there when people discuss the best of this year. The crowd was lively on big time favorites such as Corduroy and Do The Evolution, which means they were treated to some well deserved surprises later in the set. Two big highlights of this show include a version of Love Boat Captain that features an incredible jam/improv intro, and a tandem of The Beatles Help! transitioning into Riot Act deep cut Help Help. So this is it, we've hit 100 album reviews (or whatever it is we do on our little show). We decided that the only way properly celebrate was to talk about an album by the most influential rock band in rock and roll history - the Beatles - and their fifth studio album: 1965's Help! .Released at the height of Beatlemania, Help! is the last album of what is typically considered “Early period” Beatles. Tied to the movie of the same name, Help! is too often dismissed as just a soundtrack album and as a result, often gets overlooked. But  it is worthy of further discussion.  Help! is a transitional album that moves the band away from their 60s pop oriented tunes towards a more mature sound influenced by Bob Dylan and utilizing the studio in in a way not done previously by a rock band. And it contains “Yesterday,” a song that holds the world record for the number of covers recorded at 2200 and counting. Help! is a true underrated Beatles' gem worthy of additional attention and listens.

Help! is a 1965 British musical comedy-adventure film directed by Richard Lester, starring the Beatles and featuring Leo McKern, Eleanor Bron, Victor Spinetti, John Bluthal, Roy Kinnear and Patrick Cargill. The second film starring the Beatles following Lester's A Hard Day's Night, Help! sees the group struggle to record their new album while trying to protect Starr from a sinister cult and a pair of mad scientists, all of whom are obsessed with obtaining one of his rings.[3] The soundtrack was released as an album, also called Help! The film had its Royal World Premiere at the London Pavilion Theatre in the West End of London on 29 July 1965 in the presence of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and the Earl of Snowdon. While not reviewed at the time with the same high level of admiration as their first film, the film is now credited with influencing the development of music videos.

What can you say about The Beatles that's not already been said?! Well, we have a crack at disecting their 5th studio LP released in the UK from August 1965 which we don't believe has had too much previous in-depth analysis. So, we provide a track by track guide and discuss the album in general, and give our thoughts on the movie that featured seven of the songs from the record. The iconic cover of the Beatles using their arms in flag semaphore to spell out the word 'Help!' in fact doesn't spell out 'Help' at all! Find out what it does spell and why they didn't run with the spelling of the album name by tuning in. Rick's Mum and Dad were visiting earlier on the day of recording (25.9.21) and so we took the opportunity to talk to Rick's Mum about her musical recollections, what she was up to in 1965 and what she thinks of The Beatles. Surprisingly, both she and Kate aren't big fans and have their reasons why, although rumours that Rick is drawing up the divorce papers as a result of this revelation are unfounded! 1965 gets the Memorabilia treatment for the month of relsease and Kate tells us what were the best selling albums and singles in the week that 'Help!' hit the shops, along with what was in the news headlines for the month, including three Beatles related stories. Rick's random single of the week is from 1963 and co-written by the late, great and ever so lively Freddie Garrity. It reached number 2 in the UK singles charts, but two years later, in the Spring of 1965, it reached the summit of the US Billboard hot 100 - we explain why there was such a gap in the chart success on both sides of the pond. Finally, we reveal what our next episode LP will be, selected from Kate's collection and released in May 1989.
