On the second last episode I talk about the very polite movie Stan & Ollie about the wonderful comedic duo Laurel and Hardy. It really is a must see. I got my new iPhone12 Pro and watched a great special on Netflix called Jerry Before Seinfeld which shows attitude is everything. Started a new course on Ableton to improve my music making skills and bought lots more courses for my creativity. I got my DNA pack from MyAncestry to find out about my heritage. I got a free one subscription to Apple TV because I got the new iPhone. I saw a songwriting special with Seal which I wasn’t too impressed with. I watched the new Taylor Sift special where she performs all the songs off her new album Folklore. See what I thought about her album. I watched a documentary about MTV which was very interesting and finished the week watching Mariah’s Christmas special which I loved and hated. See why. Beat of the week is a lovely lofi beat called Garden State. It will chill you out for the week. I love the vinyl crackle it’s my favourite. Thanks for listening. I love hearing from you so if you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me on the social media platforms listed below. My guest this week is Georgina Higgins, a Script Supervisor, whose recent credits include the Film4 and BFI-backed production Limbo from director Ben Sharrock, which was selected for Cannes this year and very well reviewed at the London Film Festival; a moving drama called Monsoon starring Henry Golding which is on BBC Two tomorrow night and will then be on BBC iPlayer. She also worked on Michaela Coel’s astonishing TV series I May Destroy You, Sky Atlantic & Showtime’s Patrick Melrose and the BAFTA-nominated film Stan & Ollie. We unpack what it means to be a script supervisor, what the hardest part of the job is, how Georgina prepares and whether she can bear to watch what she works on considering its a job all about continuity and perfection.

Hello podpals and welcome to Season 3 of Best Girl Grip, I’m very excited to be back with another round of guests who will help guide us through the many different roles in the film industry. It feels very special to be launching a new series with this week’s guest, because it has been a long-time coming and it was an interview that was delayed due to Covid, and that guest is Anu Henriques. Anu is a development and production assistant at Fable Pictures, whose films include Stan & Ollie and Wild Rose. Their latest production is Rocks, a vibrant and vital film about a teenage girl living in London who is trying to protect her younger brother from the authorities after her Mum disappears. Anu has a credit as an Associate Director on that film, having worked closely with director Sarah Gavron through development, production and post production.  Alongside her work at Fable, she is also the founder and co-editor-in-chief of Skin Deep, a creative platform that is redefining culture and amplifying voices of colour through discussions of race, politics and activism through print, film and live events. Anu and I talk who gets to be storytellers, how she formed Skin Deep to probe that question, the organic and collaborative process out of which Rocks was born and the tools she’ll be taking to all her projects having had that experience. It was a joyous chat, and having seen Rocks and also having followed the press campaign for it quite closely, everyone involved just radiates such pride and enthusiasm for that film. It’s really infectious and the same can be said of the film itself. I would urge you to get out to a cinema and see it while you can. In the meantime, here’s episode 64 of Best Girl Grip.

This week's episode is pretty exciting because as you know this podcast is called Best Girl Grip which is play on words for the role on a film set called Best Boy Grip, meant to highlight the historical and in fact present tense lack of women within the film industry. And this week I am actually speaking to a grip, to hear about that role and what it is. So I’m hoping that 58 episodes into the life of this podcast, it will all finally make sense. The grip in question is the delightful Rebecca Horsburgh, who has worked on lots of brilliant British films including Free Fire, Films Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, Journeyman, Stan & Ollie, Rocks and also has credit on Chloe Zhao’s upcoming Marvel film The Eternals. We chat about how she learnt about this rather lesser known role in the camera department, what it is she’s responsible for, how she built her confidence in the role and what’s it like being one of very few women in the profession. I’m so grateful that Rebecca spared the time in lockdown to talk to me, because even though the podcast bears the name grip, it’s something I don’t have a lot of knowledge about, so I was just excited to learn from her and I hope you do as well.

Writer/Director Michael Winterbottom and Actor Steve Coogan discuss their latest film, GREED, with moderator Scott Mantz. Recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 2/28/20. Greed tells the story of self-made British billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie (Steve Coogan, The Trip, Stan & Ollie, Philomena), whose retail empire is in crisis. For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion—bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street—but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicized and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos. A satire on the grotesque inequality of wealth in the fashion industry, the film sees McCreadie's rise and fall through the eyes of his biographer, Nick (David Mitchell). Written and directed by Michael Winterbottom (The Trip, The Wedding Guest, A Mighty Heart, 24 Hour Party People).

Every Saturday morning, movie critic Francesca Rudkin joins Jack Tame to take a look at what is playing at the movies this weekend.Stan & Ollie is a 2018 biographical comedy-drama film directed by Jon S. Baird and written by Jeff Pope. Based on the later years of the lives of the comedy double act Laurel and Hardy, the film stars Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. It premiered in October 2018 at the BFI London Film Festival. The film was released in the United States on 28 December 2018 and in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2019.The film focuses on details of the comedy duo's personal relationship while relating how they embarked on a grueling music hall tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland during 1953 and struggled to get another film made. At the 76th Golden Globe Awards, Reilly was nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards the film earned three nominations, including Best British Film and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Coogan.Hollywood Reporter: James Caan, Rosanna Arquette, Tom Hollander and Jonathan Rhys Meyers headline French writer-director Amanda Sthers’ latest ensembler. If you’re interested in a movie where James Caan plays a grumpy old retired cardiologist raising pigs in Israel, and one who used to be married to a younger woman, played by Rosanna Arquette, who now is stricken with terminal cancer, and who is also estranged from his playwright son (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), whose latest opus, titled Origins, punctuates the drama with several symbolic interpretive dance pieces, then maybe — just maybe — the film Holy Lands could be for you.But for the rest of us, this treacly and overwrought piece of mishegoss from French novelist turned director Amanda Sthers is pretty much a chore from start to finish. In fact, a curmudgeonly Caan talking to his favorite little piglet may be one of the better things to see here, because at least there’s a tinge of sweetness to such a scene. The rest of the movie is mired by 12-ton clichés about family, love, death, God, religion, you name it — everything connected by portentous letters that the characters read aloud from separate continents. How this kind of film got made is a mystery; the fact that it has yet to secure U.S. distribution telling of its commercial prospects.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are widely regarded as the greatest comedy partnership in movie history: making over 107 films, and defining the notion of the double act with infectious chemistry and hilarious routines that seemed effortless but were honed down to the finest detail. It’s really quite puzzling why it took Hollywood so long to honor the legendary duo, but STAN & OLLIE was definitely worth the wait. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/script2screen/message

From there, Kris recaps STAN & OLLIE (11:55), a well-meaning film about Laurel and Hardy in the last year of their joint career. John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan discuss their childhood love of the Laurel & Hardy movies, stepping into the shoes of the legendary comedy duo for their new film Stan & Ollie, and the transformation that allowed John to step in the famously large pants of Oliver Hardy.  They share how Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's 35 year showbiz partnership was a lot like a marriage, what it was like for Steve and John to find that same chemistry (having never worked together before), and how their director's emergency apendactomy gave them an opportunity to bond during an impromptu pilgrimage to Stan Laurel's hometown in England.  Plus John C. Reilly talks about being part of another famous comedy duo with Will Ferrell, Steve and John reveal how they recreated some of Laurel and Hardy's most iconic routines, and we debate the pros and cons of the old Hollywood studio system and the controversy over Oliver Hardy’s most memorable line. Stan & Ollie which opens in theatres in New York and Los Angeles this Friday December 28.  Visit www.sonyclassics.com/stanandollie for showtimes and more information.  Today's podcast was sponsored by BetDSI.com.  Subscribe to Kickass News on Apple Podcasts, visit our website at www.kickassnews.com, and follow us on twitter at @KickassNewsPod.
