Welcome to Play, Pause, Rewind! The world's greatest media podcast, maybe. This week, we take a look at Christopher Nolan's latest film, an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. The Odyssey is one of the oldest surviving works of literature dating back to oral storytelling traditions from almost 2,900 years ago. Attributed to Homer, The Odyssey follows Greek warrior Odysseus on his long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Nolan's adaptation updates the myth and incorporates some thematic work that resonates with modern audiences while working to maintain the spirit of the original epic poem. The film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson, and many more.Social Information:Podcast Info: https://linktr.ee/PlayPauseRewind Dylan's Info: https://linktr.ee/DDayMovies Niles' Info: https://www.instagram.com/nilesgotnostylez/Topics and Timecodes:Intro: 0:14The Odyssey: 3:10The Odyssey (spoilers): 15:29Other Stuff: 1:32:03Outros: 1:38:10

Send us Fan MailThe first commercial film ever shot entirely on IMAX, and it earns every frame of that scale. Matt Damon carries this movie on his back, leading a stacked ensemble through Nolan's near-perfect vision of Homer's epic — Robert Pattinson quietly gives the best performance in the film as the suitor Antinous, John Leguizamo is devastating as the loyal, half-blind Eumaeus, and Elliot Page's Sinon, Himesh Patel's Eurylochus, Samantha Morton's Circe, and Charlize Theron's Calypso all land. Nolan tells the Sack of Troy three separate times across the film, each retelling peeling back more of the cost of how they actually won.Robbie caught the 7:45am 70mm screening at Harkins Arizona Mills with his wife Amy.

The Odyssey (2026) Directed by: Christopher Nolan Written by: Christopher Nolan Starring: Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Bill Irwin, Travis Scott IMDB: [IMDB LINK] Episode Summary In this episode of Mindframes, Michael and Dave discuss The Odyssey (2026), Christopher Nolan's three-hour adaptation of Homer — a $250 million epic and the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX 70mm. The discussion covers Nolan as an auteur and whether the "never made a bad movie" claim holds up, the practical-effects approach to the Cyclops and Circe, the deliberately cold Northern palette imposed on the Mediterranean, Ludwig Göransson's score, and an ensemble so large the hosts concede they can't get to everyone. After the ratings, the spoiler section turns to the film's central choice: the Olympian gods have been removed while the monsters remain, and what that does to Odysseus' moral agency. Comparisons range across Nolan's own filmography, Troy, The Northman, and the sword-and-sandal epics of the 1950s and '60s. Reviews Michael: 4.5 / 5 — came out thinking four, and it has only grown in his esteem since. Praises the baseline of visual and musical quality, Damon working better as a lead than expected, and a supporting cast that carries every stop on the journey. Docks it for a cast so crowded it distracts, and for an ending too in love with its own moralism. Dave: 4.5 / 5 — would watch it again in a heartbeat. Calls it a film that grabs hold of empire, heroism, reverence, and humility all at once, and rates the separation of gods from monsters as pitch perfect. His one dent in the fender: the film plays a little episodic, a series of very large encounters rather than a single build. Thematic Discussion The Odyssey removes the Olympians but keeps the monsters. Circe, the Sirens, and the Cyclops are all simply part of the natural world here; it's Athena and Zeus who stay shadowy and inferred. Michael's reading is that this absence exists to hand moral agency back to Odysseus — if the gods were visibly steering, his guilt over the Trojan Horse wouldn't be his to carry. That guilt is framed through xenia, the Greek code of hospitality. Odysseus offered a gift that turned out to be murder, and comes to believe that breaking that norm is what set his civilization's collapse in motion. The hosts draw the parallel to the erosion of political and social norms in contemporary America, and to the film's closing turn — the Bronze Age is ending because of the Sea Peoples, and the Greeks realize they are the Sea Peoples. The episode's central disagreement is over Athena. Dave reads her as constructed: she wears the face of a priestess Odysseus watched his own men murder in her temple, and the film is showing how humans build gods out of guilt and the sense that something is sacred. Michael pushes back that the film sustains a genuine ambiguity — the idea that gods appear in human form is planted repeatedly, and the priestess is decapitated at the exact moment Athena's statue is, which leaves open that Odysseus may believe they killed a god. He points to the same ambiguity in the Cyclops' cry to Poseidon, which some of the crew claim to hear and neither Odysseus nor the audience does. Neither host resolves it, and both prefer it that way. Michael's position is that the ambiguity is the answer rather than the absence of one — something underpins their world that they don't fully see and are damaging anyway, whether that's Zeus and Poseidon or simply decency and the value of human life. Dave, arriving from a position of religious faith, says he likes that Odysseus has to live in the same uncertain world the rest of us do. The structural evidence they land on: Homer ends with a deus ex machina, Athena descending to stop the cycle of revenge. Nolan cuts it. Nobody intervenes, so Odysseus abdicates, gives the throne to Telemachus, and sails west with Penelope — a change that hands the ending's moral weight entirely to the man. Warrior – Prime Video Joe reaches back into the early Moviewallas archives for this powerful sports drama starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte. It may look like a conventional fighting movie, but its performances and emotional weight lift it far above the genre clichés. The Odyssey Christopher Nolan takes on one of the oldest and most influential stories ever told, with Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and a huge ensemble that includes Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, and more. Shot entirely in IMAX, this is Nolan operating at his most ambitious: vast locations, practical filmmaking, mythological creatures, booming sound design, and a story that spans war, guilt, temptation, survival, and the long journey home. The team discusses the film's extraordinary technical achievement, its unconventional structure, Nolan's reinterpretation of the story's women, Matt Damon's take on Odysseus, and whether all that cinematic majesty comes with enough emotional warmth. They also debate whether Nolan's devotion to IMAX and fractured timelines strengthens the story or sometimes gets in its way. Despite a few reservations, everyone agrees that The Odyssey demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has finally landed in cinemas around the world, and to mark the occasion, we've turned the latest episode of The Interviews into an Odyssey special, as Chris Hewitt talks to two of the key pairings from Nolan's epic adaptation of the Homer poem. First up, you'll hear from Himesh Patel and John Leguizamo, who play Eurylochus and Eumaeus, two characters who are close to Odysseus, the warrior whose journey home after The Trojan War is beset by the kind of bad luck that would have you begging for a bus replacement service. And then you'll hear from Odysseus himself, aka Matt Damon, and Tom Holland, who plays Odysseus' son, Telemachus, as they talk about their toughest days on set, the worst smells, and forging a father-son bond between two characters who are apart for much of the film. These aren't spoiler interviews, but references are made to certain scenes, so perhaps wait until you've seen The Odyssey before listening, just in case. But both pairings were on cracking form, and we hope you'll enjoy.

This week Evan and Dave sat side by side in the movie house (notably not an IMAX movie house) to watch THE ODYSSEY (2:44), Christopher Nolan's film of Homer's epic poem. Because after OPPENHEIMER, what do you do? Swords and sandals, obviously. Look, folks. This film is long. But it's engaging, has an incredible score, and Matt Damon gives the performance of this career, along with excellent work from Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson, Himesh Patel, and Samantha Morton. Evan is on board with the movie, and Dave is, too, though they're both ambivalent about Nolan, and they go down that rabbit hole, too. And Spoilerpiece is 12 years old! Wow! We'd make a joke about time flying, but nah. We just go through some of the ups and downs and then get the hell off the mic. Over on Patreon, we talk about NOBODY 2.

Enola Holmes 3 Review: Millie Bobby Brown Deserved a Better Script

Fully-Booked: Literary Podcast

Enola Holmes 3 dropped on Netflix on July 1, 2026, and it is the first film in the franchise that neither of us actually enjoyed. Director Philip Barantini reportedly pitched it as the Prisoner of Azkaban of the series, the entry where the tone grows up alongside the characters. Enola is getting married. Sherlock has been kidnapped. There is stolen Afghan gold buried inside a story about British rule in Malta. On paper, this should be the best Enola Holmes movie. On screen, she winks at the camera while she is being drowned. Enola Holmes 3 Review: The Netflix Threequel Nobody Was Ready to Dislike Enola Holmes 3 arrived on Netflix on July 1, 2026, four years after Enola Holmes 2, and it is the first film in the series we both came away cold on. Director Philip Barantini took over from Harry Bradbeer and pitched a darker entry, the Prisoner of Azkaban of the franchise. The wink Enola delivers mid-drowning suggests otherwise. Everyone except Sharon Duncan-Brewster seems to be floating through the film. Her Moriarty reads as over the top only because nobody else is playing at her level. The set, the costumes, and Malta itself are lovely. The film uses its locations far better than it uses its plot. Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes Books vs. Netflix's Original Scripts The Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer runs ten books, starting with The Case of the Missing Marquess. Only the first film adapts a book. Films two and three are original scripts built on Springer's characters, with the author uninvolved. Springer's Enola is fourteen, a "perditorian" (finder of lost things), and a genuinely clever spin on Arthur Conan Doyle's canon. Colonialism, Stolen Gold, and Commentary That Never Lands The mystery turns on British officers stealing Afghan gold and hiding it in Malta, tied to Tewkesbury's late father and the Empire's occupation of the island. Moriarty raises real, sharp points about who Britain took from and why. The film states them, then moves on to the next scene. Compare Enola Holmes 2, where the match girls' strike of 1888 was woven straight into the mystery. Here the wedding plot and the mystery plot barely touch. Female Empowerment With No Actual Power Enola is asked to choose between being a lady and being a detective, which is the most interesting question in the film and gets the least room. Eudoria Holmes has nothing to do and remains a fugitive. Her companion Edith is right there, and the film will not go anywhere near it. Sherlock and Watson get the same treatment. The tea, the closeness, the careful framing, and then nothing. Commit or don't. The Verdict, the Scores, and Enola Holmes 4 Strengths: costumes, sets, Malta, and the comfort of recurring characters. Weaknesses: tone, plot holes, and a mystery you forget while watching it. Audiences and critics both landed lower than either previous film, the franchise's first entry to miss Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix has not confirmed a fourth film. The latest episode of The Interviews is another belter, folks. And is, accidentally, double act-themed. First, Chris Hewitt sits down on Zoom for a fun chat with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of one of the year's biggest and best films, Project Hail Mary, as the Ryan Gosling-Rocky The Alien movie lands on Prime Video. It's not a spoiler chat, but they talk about some of the film's key sequences (so be mindful if you somehow haven't seen it), its immense success, and what they're doing next. [1:23 - 20:13 approx] Then, Harry Stainer sits down with another notable filmmaking duo, Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, the director (Johnson), writers and stars (both) of bonkers new comedy Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, to talk about their lo-fi five-star triumph and their favourite Spielberg movie. [21:18 - 41:57 approx] And finally, Chris Zooms it up a storm with Himesh Patel, who stars in Enola Holmes 3 as Dr. Watson, one-half of one of the greatest partnerships of them all. [42:52 - 57:07 approx] It's an episode so good that you might say, to quote another great double-act, 'uvavu'. Enjoy!

The “Enola Holmes” films have never been short on charm and wits, but “Enola Holmes 3” gives the franchise a little more room to breathe and, dare I say, mature. The mystery is still there. The cheeky banter is still there. Enola is still starting fires and solving crimes. But this time, the story heads to Malta and lets Enola and Tewkesbury deal with a mystery that makes them grow up and face their respective legacies. On this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo speaks with director Philip Barantini and stars Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge about the film, which hits Netflix July 1. Brown returns as Enola Holmes, with Partridge back as Tewkesbury. It follows Enola as she heads to Malta to marry, while her aspirations merge with her most complex and dangerous case yet. The film also features Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Himesh Patel, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and more.READ MORE: ‘The Bear': Jeremy Allen White, Liza Colón-Zayas, Lionel Boyce & Matty Matheson On Saying Goodbye, Spinoff Ideas, ‘The Social Reckoning' & More [Interview]

Growing up a Beatles fan, he not only enjoys hearing the music reintroduced in a new context, but also seeing the impact those songs would have even if the world had somehow forgotten the band. Himesh Patel delivers a strong lead performance, bringing both sincerity and vocal talent to the role, while Lily James shines as his longtime friend and love interest. Their chemistry carries the emotional heart of the film, even if both Butler and Mike Field agree it is a bit frustrating that Patel's character cannot see what is so clearly in front of him.Kate McKinnon also stands out as his sharp-edged manager once fame starts to take hold, adding a fun industry satire layer to the story. One thing both Butler and Field appreciate is that the unexplained “magic” behind The Beatles never existing is never overexplained or undone. The film simply accepts it as reality and focuses instead on themes of art, authenticity, love, and what it means to be an artist in a world obsessed with fame. With timeless music, a sweet love story, and relatable creative themes, "Yesterday" is a charming and heartfelt watch that will likely have you queuing up The Beatles long after the credits roll. What's your favorite film about music? Han Solo & Chewbacca's First Appearance - A New Hopehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G79bEF0GD90What is Han Solo's Relationship with Chewbacca?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46kZ3yQ-uEkBest Friends in History: Han Solo & Chewbaccahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex1vRTz34f0Han & Chewbacca - Mad Lovehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGsTCzRgOX0Harrison Ford settles his Feud with Chewbacca - Jimmy Kimmel Livehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDM4XVrAAgABeastie Boys - Intergalactichttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qORYO0atB6gBehind the Curtain with Ian Leslie - Author of "John & Paul: A Love Story In Songs"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVAbBJkuBFkPaul McCartney's FULL reaction to John Lennon's deathhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6_62zKxOr0In Spite of All The Danger - The Quarrymenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuuOAA9ekbgThe Quarrymen - That'll Be The Dayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4_LMMKq8HwThe Beatles - Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JhKYwHyoYUThe Beatles - Yesterday (Live With Spoken Word Intro, New York)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXTJBr9tt8QThe Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knowshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4BuziKGMy4The X-Files - Scully meets Mulder for the first Timehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KomquOrtcCcTop 11 Smulder Moments in the X-Fileshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3LnWJB90u4Mulder & Scully Chronological - Playlisthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwxNtic25lQ&list=PLQ0KNAzYfxthSwTn63clfbcU2RbeX--HzX-Files - Millenium Kisshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jPgFdHrV2oDavid Duchovny & Gillian Anderson explain their 90's Tension - Jimmy Kimmel Livehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgEN1t4jPREMassive Attack - Protection (feat. On the latest episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo steps into a high-concept, near-future world of moral quandaries and psychological pressure with the sci-fi drama "The Assessment." Directed by Fleur Fortuné and starring Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, and Himesh Patel, the film follows a couple evaluated by the government over seven increasingly intense days to determine whether they're worthy of having a child. Think of a creepy, contained "Children of Men" by way of Ingmar Bergman and Charlie Kaufman. The film recently premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and hits VOD on April 8th, delivering a minimalist but emotionally potent take on societal control, intimacy, and parenthood. To talk through it all, we sat down with both stars to dig into the emotional challenges of the project, their collaborations with Fortuné, and what kind of psychological strength it takes to survive the film's titular assessment.

"The Assessment" had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it received positive reviews for its sci-fi drama concept and performances from Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander & Himesh Patel. The film, set in a futuristic society destroyed by climate change, tells the story of a successful young couple who must face heavy scrutiny from a female assessor over the course of seven days to observe, evaluate, and determine if they are worthy of having a child. Olsen and Vikander were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Marvel finally gave us our first official look at The Fantastic Four: First Steps with the release of the teaser trailer during a special launch event Tuesday morning, for which The First Family's cast itself was on hand to present  AND WHAT A TRAILER IT WAS…Marvel led the drop with a space race-esque countdown in theme with the film's 1960s aesthetic. We met all of the four main characters and even saw a glimpse of the biggest bad of all…Galactus.  Last week we reported on Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch's statements about officially not being a part of Avengers: Doomsday. The very next day the actor recanted his claims in an interview with Business Insider, saying, "I got that wrong, I am in the next one,” adding, "Don't ever believe anything I say." Elsewhere, Chris Evans had a record of his own to set straight, denying the many reports that he has been cast to return in Doomsday while speaking with Esquire, claiming, “That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!” Finally, in an interview on Andy Cohen Live, the legendary Patti LuPone may have shed some light on the future of Disney Plus series WandaVision and Agatha All Along, saying showrunner Jac Schaeffer told her she doesn't do second seasons.  Sunday's Super Bowl LIX, where the Kansas City Chiefs will defend their title against the Philadelphia Eagles, is bound to bring a bevy of trailers for movies and series in tow, but let's talk about what exactly is confirmed, expected, predicted, and everything in between: only three motion picture studios have been willing to invest the substantial sum of $7.5 to $8 million for a single 30-second commercial spot: Disney, Paramount, and Universal. Disney plans to showcase trailers for several anticipated films, including the live-action remake of Snow White, the animated feature Lilo & Stitch, the original animated film Elio, and upcoming Marvel entries such as Thunderbolts*. Paramount is expected to promote its diverse lineup, which includes the Jack Quaid-led action film Novocaine, a musical Smurfs movie featuring Rihanna, and the latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise, Final Reckoning. Universal may reveal trailers for How To Train Your Dragon, the horror sequel M3GAN 2.0, and Jurassic World Rebirth. Notably absent is Warner Bros and DC Studios. Actor-director Benny Safdie will join Christopher Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey, following his role as Edward Teller in Oppenheimer. Recent cast additions include Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton. Netflix is developing a new Little House on the Prairie series, 40 years after NBC's original adaptation, this time with Rebecca Sonnenshine of The Vampire Diaries and The Boys as showrunner. Jake Gyllenhaal will star in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming supernatural romantic thriller, which Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks are collaboratively developing as both a film screenplay and a novel. Sony Pictures has set a release date of August 29th for Darren Aronofsky‘s Austin Butler-led feature Caught Stealing. The film that previously held that date, the sixth film in the Insidious franchise, has moved back a year to Aug. 21, 2026. Robert Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures. Plot details are under wraps, but sources tell Deadine that the film is a sequel to, rather than a remake of, Jim Henson's 1986 classic.
