Health & Wellness In Focus Episode #19 – Coping With Grief & Loss: “Light in Your Valley” Host: Dr. Bryan Hudson | Guest: Dr. Stephen E. Gardner Program Summary Dr. Gardner’s links: LinkedIN, www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-e-gardner-edd-ma-ct-6823b4b Everyday Consulting, www.everydayconsulting.org Crown of Hope International. www.crownofhope.org In this insightful episode of Health & Wellness In Focus, Dr. Bryan Hudson interviews Dr. Stephen E. Gardner—a pastor, theologist, veteran advocate, transformational coach, and independent scholar—on the theme “Coping With Grief & Loss: Light in Your Valley.” Key Highlights: 1. The Multifaceted Nature of Dr. Gardner’s Work: Dr. Gardner views his roles beyond the pulpit, engaging with the community on issues like death, loss, and personal transformation. His work with veterans especially involves shifting from post-traumatic stress to post-traumatic growth. 2. Understanding Grief Beyond Death: Loss includes not only death but also life transitions like job loss, shifting beliefs, or health setbacks. Grief is both emotional and neurological—highlighted by Dr. Gardner’s recommended book The Grieving Brain by Mary-Frances O’Connor. 3. The Four Tasks of Mourning (based on Dr. William Worden): Accept the Reality of the Loss – Acknowledge what has happened, even if heart and mind aren’t in sync. Process the Pain of Grief – Embrace emotions like guilt and sadness without rushing to “move on.” Adjust to a World Without the Deceased – Including identity changes, especially for spouses or long-term caregivers. Find a Way to Maintain Connection While Moving Forward – Through legacy, memory, or service. 4. Harmful Coping Practices: Telling people to “snap out of it” is unhelpful and often stems from discomfort or fear. Over-spiritualizing grief or using shallow platitudes can invalidate real feelings. 5. Integrating Faith with Mental Health: Faith is essential but must be paired with informed mental health practices. Spiritual responses should not replace therapy or professional help. Ministry of presence—being there without words—is often more healing than scripture alone. 6. Cultural Competence in Counseling: One-size-fits-all approaches fail across cultural lines. Dr. Gardner advocates for respectful, “user-centered” care that adapts to clients’ cultural and spiritual contexts. Professionals should ask: “How can I help you in a way that respects your culture?” 7. Encouraging Mental Health Careers: There's a great need for more culturally competent professionals, particularly from underrepresented communities. Churches and pastors should present these fields as mission and kingdom work. 8. Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health: Many avoid counseling due to fear of judgment or appearing “broken.” Seeking help should be normalized like seeing a doctor for a broken arm. 9. The Power of Meaning-Making: Healing accelerates when people can find purpose or meaning in their loss. Dr. Gardner shared his personal story of losing his mother at 18 and how he found strength through understanding her legacy and completing his life mission. Final Thoughts: Dr. Gardner stresses the importance of community, competent care, and courageous vulnerability when facing grief. Pastor Hudson reinforces that churches should be wellness hubs that connect people to the full range of care they need. Viewers and listeners are encouraged to share the episode to help others who may be experiencing grief or loss.
There was a heartbreaking fire in Milwaukee on Mother's Day which claimed five lives due to the absence of sprinkler systems in older apartment buildings. The conversation shifts to policy, questioning the state's priorities under Speaker Robin Voss, who opposes mandatory retrofits citing cost concerns, while ignoring the human cost. The episode also highlights funding threats to Head Start programs, exacerbated by cuts to child care support, revealing a stark landscape where political agendas prioritize landlords over tenants, and budget surpluses overshadow essential public safety and child welfare needs. Togo's International Fashion Festival has chosen a topical theme for its twelfth edition: the fight against cancer. The issue may not appear glamorous, but the alarming rise in cancer rates makes it extremely relevant. Jacques Logoh, the festival's founder, believes that fashion must help raise awareness of the disease, with prevention as its watchword. As such, some 40 designers from 25 countries are showing off their artisanal and fashion expertise at the event. FRANCE 24 went to check it out.
Kingdom Living - Matthew 21:33-46: Imagine a world without grace - where every mistake demands perfect justice and every failure is final. This Sunday, through Matthew 21:33-46, we'll encounter a God whose patience and grace confronts our pride and self-reliance. In this striking parable, Jesus reveals how easily we reject grace in pursuit of control, yet He persistently invites us back to Himself. Join us at 9 or 11am as we discover a God who relentlessly offers grace, even when it costs Him everything. Don't miss this invitation to experience true freedom in Christ. Bring a friend!
Stuart McMillan plays a spirited round of "Would You Rather?" with Debbie Monterrey, covering everything from telekinesis to emotional resilience. Debbie brings humor and insight as she debates taking a nap over working, exploring the ocean instead of meeting aliens, and whether she'd rather move objects with her mind or read minds. The two also dive into a thoughtful discussion on the value of art and music, with Debbie making a surprising choice about which she could live without.
Your daily calendar reveals the truth about your priorities more honestly than your words ever could. In this thought-provoking exploration of authentic living, Jesse Cope challenges us to confront the gap between what we say matters to us and how we actually spend our time and resources. Are we becoming more like Christ or drifting away from Him? There's no neutral ground.Drawing from Titus 2, we examine God's counter-cultural instructions for men and women of all ages—standards that differ radically from modern social messaging. These biblical principles reveal why Christian witness diminishes when believers' lives mirror those of non-believers. "If we look just the same inside the church as people outside the church," Cope observes, "then we're not really offering anything."The conversation shifts to America's cultural crossroads, borrowing wisdom from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" alongside historical American voices. Prescott, Bancroft, and even P.T. Barnum demonstrate how thoroughly Christian principles once permeated American education, politics, and culture. This historical perspective frames our current moment as potentially America's "last stand for liberty," with nowhere else to flee if freedom fails here. Most powerfully, we're reminded that each of us may be "the only piece of Jesus Christ that somebody gets to see." Your representation of faith matters tremendously to those who may never encounter Christianity elsewhere. How will your calendar reflect your true priorities today? Listen now to realign your actions with your deepest values and join the vital work of reclaiming America's soul.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

This episode of the Lawfare Podcast features Glen Weyl, economist and author at Microsoft Research; Jacob Mchangama, Executive Director of the Future of Free Speech Project at Vanderbilt; and Ravi Iyer, Managing Director of the USC Marshall School Neely Center.Together with Renee DiResta, Associate Research Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown and Contributing Editor at Lawfare, they talk about design vs moderation. Conversations about the challenges of social media often focus on moderation—what stays up and what comes down. Yet the way a social media platform is built influences everything from what we see, to what is amplified, to what content is created in the first place—as users respond to incentives, nudges, and affordances. Design processes are often invisible or opaque, and users have little power—though new decentralized platforms are changing that. So they talk about designing a prosocial media for the future, and the potential for an online world without Caesars.Articles Referenced:https://arxiv.org/abs/2502.10834https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4178647https://www.techdirt.com/2025/01/27/empowering-users-not-overlords-overcoming-digital-helplessness/https://kgi.georgetown.edu/research-and-commentary/better-feeds/https://knightcolumbia.org/content/the-algorithmic-management-of-polarization-and-violence-on-social-mediahttps://time.com/7258238/social-media-tang-siddarth-weyl/https://futurefreespeech.org/scope-creep/https://futurefreespeech.org/preventing-torrents-of-hate-or-stifling-free-expression-online/https://www.thefai.org/posts/shaping-the-future-of-social-media-with-middlewareTo receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. ‘Buzzkill' Examines the Crisis of Disappearing Honeybees and Other Pollinators The Central Valley's almond industry is hosting what some beekeepers call the Super Bowl. Commercial beekeepers from across the country take an estimated 90% of the nation's honeybees and load them into trucks in time to make a narrow pollination window for those Central Valley almond trees. But it's gotten harder and harder to keep those bees alive. All over the world, bees, butterflies, moths and flies are disappearing. Sasha Khokha sat down with Teresa Cotsirilos, host of Buzzkill, a new podcast that investigates the pollinator crisis. Why is it so hard to remember that we deserve to be heard? Staying silent in our professional lives can feel like the safe choice, but it can have unintended consequences on our overall career trajectory. In this episode, Elaine Lin Hering shares what her research, experience in mediation and conflict management, and new book "Unlearning Silence" have to say about why so many of us—especially women—are reticent to raise our voices. She highlights the intrinsic connection between wielding our voices—both audibly and through our actions—and recognizing our self-worth. Examine the ways that silence impacts your own life, including:Where does our tendency toward silence stem from?;Why we need to question and dismantle the “babble hypothesis”;Why just talking more isn't the goal of unlearning silence; How leaders can actively push back against silencing team members.Related Links:Elaine's book, Unlearning Silence: How to Speak Your Mind, Unleash Talent, and Live More Fully - https://elainelinhering.com/book/Episode 428, Finding Your Voice at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode428Episode 246, Lessons from Improv to Own Your Voice and Speak Up at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode246Episode 377, What all women can learn from women of color in leadership with Deepa Purushothaman - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode377Episode 445, 3 Tips For Managing Too Many Meetings - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode445SPEAK UP: A Live Assertive Communication Course For Women In The Workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/speakupMicro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World Without a Bullhorn by Omkari L.
