"The man who embraces his mediocre nothingness shines greater than any." - Keanu Reeves 2019's "Always Be My Maybe" is a cute romantic comedy, but it's also a look at an alternate version of Randall Park as a chill San Francisco rapper. We'll talk about the real influences on Hello Peril, the group at the center of this movie, as well as some other Bay Area artists that we believe fed into the vibe. Plus, a bit on the heavy-hitters like Dan the Automator and Lyrics Born who lent real-life credibility to the music in this film.

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. On this month's episode of Studio Soundtracks, host Chandler Poling is joined by guests Trygge Toven and Adam Blackstone. TRYGGE TOVEN Trygge Toven is a highly sought-after Emmy nominated music supervisor who has shaped the musical identity of some of Hollywood's biggest films, including Netflix's Dolemite Is My Name! and Always Be My Maybe, Michael Bay's 6 Underground, the Paramount box office hit Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and oversaw the music for the acclaimed Knives Out. Most recently, Trygge collaborated with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy on Amazon's critically acclaimed series Fallout. His exceptional work on the show has earned him an Emmy nomination for music supervision. Toven also lends his services to a number of high-profile television series, including HBO's critically acclaimed series, Westworld, Dwayne Johnson's hit series, Young Rock, and Marvel series Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston. In addition to supervision, Toven served as music producer for The Marvels and on David O. Russell's Amsterdam. Trygge's diverse background as both a music producer and recording engineer play an integral role in his approach; his time crafting music behind the scenes has put him in a unique position of understanding talent from a creator's point of view. Toven excels in providing his insight and expertise on-set and in the studio to best align creative visions with inventive, enlightened solutions. ADAM BLACKSTONE On TV, radio or at a live concert at your favorite stadium, the Adam Blackstone sound has certainly permeated your eardrums. Blackstone is not only a multi-faceted bass player, musician, 6x Emmy nominated and winning Music Director and Grammy award winning writer, he is the musical mastermind behind the live shows of many of today's biggest artists. This year Adam is nominated for the Outstanding Music Direction Category for 2023 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony. He has served as the Musical Director for acts such as Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, recently cultivated the explosive, Emmy-nominated Super Bowl 56 Halftime Show featuring Dr Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dog & Mary J Blige. With each new endeavor, the artists he works with become family and fall in love with Blackstone's easy demeanor and standard for excellence. Blackstone's TV legacy continues to expand as Music Director and On-screen personality. His expertise has shaped today's biggest shows including NBC's “The Voice,” the Grammy Awards, numerous BET, VH1 and MTV specials and as the Music Director for the hit Fox show “The Masked Singer,” NBC's “That's My Jam” and the 94th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars). Blackstone was born in Trenton, New Jersey and it was there that he began to hone his craft under the guise of his father, a jazz musician, who remains one of his greatest musical influences. It was in a church playing drums at the age of 6 that his father discovered he had rhythm and perfect pitch. Once his family moved to Willingboro, NJ which has never been short on talent, he picked up bass in high school and the rest is history. After earning a scholarship to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, it didn't take long for Blackstone to become engulfed in the soul music pulse that was flowing through the city at that time. Beginning as a session musician, shortly after his start, he was touring the world.

This week, Krista brings back her 2020 interview with comedian, actress, writer, and producer Michelle Buteau. At the time of this conversation, Buteau had just released her comedy special, Welcome to Buteaupia, and was on a non-stop run of projects -- hosting The Circle, appearing in films like Always Be My Maybe, and in TV shows like First Wives Club and Tales of the City. She was also just a few months away from publishing her autobiographical book of essays, Survival of the Thickest.  Cut to 2024, and Buteau has turned that book into a hit Netflix series by the same name. She's also expanded her hosting resume, adding two seasons of Barbecue Showdown to her list. In this interview, Buteau takes us back to the very beginning of her comedy career and talks about the challenges she faced along the way. She reveals when she feels most vulnerable on stage, how her parents felt about her pursuing her passion, and some of the unsolicited advice she's received from her audiences. She also shares her advice for young comedians starting out, and what she's learned by observing the extraordinary group of women she's worked with in her career to date. It is a pleasure to welcome rapper Lyrics Born to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. He relocated to the United States from his birthplace of Tokyo, Japan, right around the time hip-hop music was exploding on the East Coast. From the moment he heard Sugar Hill Gang's 1980 classic “Rapper's Delight,” the Bay Area hip-hop luminary knew he found his calling. 25 years later, Lyrics Born obliterated stereotypes of what an MC is “supposed to” look like and captured the hearts of countless fans who gravitate to his distinctive voice. He is the only Asian-American MC to release 10 studio albums and the first to play major music festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza. He is the first Asian-American rapper to release a greatest hits compilation; he's pumped out multiple smash singles throughout his career. From “Callin' Out” and “I Like It, I Love It” to “I Changed My Mind” and “Coulda Woulda Shoulda,” his material has always retained a musically eclectic feel. The self-proclaimed “funkiest rapper alive” carries on his tradition of weaving funk and soul into classic, boom-bap Hip Hop on Quite A Life. Without the influence of icons such as the late James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Zapp & Roger, Lyrics Born admits he would not be who he is today—coupled with his love of rap pioneers such as KRS-One, Rakim, and Snoop Dogg. The music is the perfect hip-hop and funk-flavored gumbo. He expanded his empire into film since establishing himself among the upper echelon of indie Hip Hop artists.Lyrics Born appeared in films such as Boots Riley's critically acclaimed Sorry To Bother You and the Netflix film Always Be My Maybe, which starred Ali Wong, Randall Park, and Keanu Reeves. He is also the host of the popular web-based cooking show Dinner in Place. Originally launched during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dinner in Place has gained popularity over the years with three successful seasons. Now entering its fourth season, Lyrics Born stepped up the production value for the series with an entire film crew and introducing celebrity guests. The series promises an even more exciting culinary experience celebrating diversity and multiculturalism. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lyrics Born previewed the new season of Dinner in Place and spoke about some of the dishes that he made this season, including an Everything Bagel Sushi Roll and the Japanese Convenience Store 3x Egg Salad Sandwich that he made with Top Chef icon Chris Cosentino.

It seems like actor and director Randall Park has been in everything. “Veep.” “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “WandaVision.” “Aquaman.” He played an amiable version of the North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un in the movie “The Interview.” He starred and co-wrote the Netflix hit movie “Always Be My Maybe” with Ali Wong. And his single scene in “The Office” playing the Asian version of lead character Jim is a viral favorite. But Park's breakthrough role didn't come until he was 40 when he booked the hit ABC series “Fresh Off the Boat.” And that success came after many years living at home with his parents and hustling for guest roles and small parts anywhere he could find them. In this highly introspective episode, our cohosts welcome poet Amanda Kathryn to the studio to discuss Always Be My Maybe (2019). Madison says she'd swipe right on Keanu Reeves, and Chelsea raises a glass to all her fellow "bitter bitches" out there. Together they analyze the hazy intersection between passion and career, determine where to find the best french fries (or tater tots), and give a standing ovation to Randall Park and Ali Wong's childhood friends-to-lovers comedy. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? It seems like actor and director Randall Park has been in everything. “Veep.” “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “WandaVision.” “Aquaman.” He played an amiable version of the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in the movie “The Interview.” He starred in and co-wrote the Netflix hit movie “Always Be My Maybe” with Ali Wong. We'll talk to Park about his career, his directorial debut, “Shortcomings,” and what it means to find success in a fickle industry like show biz. Guests: Randall Park, actor and director. Park's debut directorial feature "Shortcomings" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Park has starred in the Netflix movie "Always Be My Maybe" and the ABC series "Fresh Off the Boat" and will next be in "Strays" with Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx

This was a conversation that made us lose track of time.  Because even if the core conversation about transracial adoption doesn't capture your attention - which it should because nearly 30% of kids who are adopted are adopted across borders or across cultures or race - the trajectory this conversation takes into why adoption should NOT be positioned as a solution to abortion absolutely is a perspective you don't want to miss - along with all the other nuggets of wisdom around identity and belonging as well. Thrilled to be bringing you insights from Patrick Armstrong, someone we don't just know from the virtual airwaves but now, thanks to some great opportunities to speak together, in real life too. And if you want to hear more about his journey as not only an adoptee, but as an outspoken advocate for adoptees and, due to his lived experience, transracial adoptees in particular, you're going to want to listen all the way to the end, and then follow him on every platform out there. What to listen for:  The moment that Patrick - a transracial adoptee from Korea, raised in a White family - realized that he wanted to explore his Asian identity.  Hat tip, Always Be My Maybe. How transracial adoption shaped Patrick's identity and influenced his sense of belonging That adoption currently centers the child - and the importance of considering the adults, and how broken the systems are that lead to families being torn apart  Thoughts on positioning adoption as the alternative to abortion.  Hint: It's not. About Patrick:   Patrick Armstrong (he/him) is a transracial Korean American adoptee, podcaster, speaker, and advocate. He is one of the co-hosts of the Janchi Show, a podcast that explores and celebrates the experiences and stories of Korean adoptees everywhere. He helped start the Asian Adoptees of Indiana, a group dedicated to creating a safe, engaging community for all Asian adoptees who need it. He is currently based in Indianapolis.
