Topics this segment include how March of the Wooden Soldiers was originally intended as an Eastertime release in 1934, as well as the many delays that plagued the production of the movie. Then we move on to Chaplin (1992). Finally we review Judy (2019).Stan & Ollie is a 2018 biographical comedy-drama film directed by Jon S. Baird. The script, written by Jeff Pope, was inspired by Laurel and Hardy: The British Tours by A.J. Marriot which chronicled the later years of the comedy double act Laurel and Hardy; the film stars Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The film focuses on details of the comedy duo's personal relationship while relating how they embarked on a gruelling music hall tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland during 1953 and struggled to get another film made. The film premiered on 21 October 2018 at the closing night gala of the BFI London Film Festival. It was released in the United States on 28 December 2018 and in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2019. At the 76th Golden Globe Awards, Reilly was nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards the film earned three nominations, including Best British Film and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Coogan.Chaplin is a 1992 biographical comedy-drama film about the life of English comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough and stars Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller and Kevin Kline. It also features Charlie Chaplin's own daughter, Geraldine Chaplin, in the role of his mother, Hannah Chaplin. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing $12 million against a $31 million budget, and received mixed reviews from critics; Downey's titular performance, however, garnered critical acclaim and won him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor along with nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama.Judy is a 2019 biographical drama film based on the life of American entertainer Judy Garland. Directed by Rupert Goold, it is an adaptation of the Olivier- and Tony-nominated West End and Broadway play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter. The film stars Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, and Michael Gambon. The film follows Garland's career during the last year of her life, when she relocated her stage career to England, coupled with flashbacks of her childhood, most prominently the shooting of her part as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939), her most famous film role. After some initial success in a run of sell-out concerts at the Talk of the Town in London, her efforts eventually stop making progress and even start to worsen as her health deteriorates.Judy premiered at the 46th Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2019, and was released in the United States on 27 September 2019, and in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2019. The film received generally positive reviews, with Zellweger's performance garnering widespread acclaim. What will you be like when you're older? As Jason and Peter bemoan their current state of crankiness - aches, and pains, increased lack of patience and errant hair growth, they also express their trepidation of becoming even more miserable as they age. But it doesn't have to be that way… there can potentially be a state of real joy. Really, no really! Joining us in-studio is an American Treasure, the personification of joy throughout life and into advanced age. Dick Van Dyke and his wife Arlene Silver joins us to talk about Dick's life, his contributions and living with joy at 97!   The conversation is filled with many surprises: How Dick went from mime and radio host to unlikely stage and screen icon. His secret to beating alcoholism. How Dick almost became James Bond. Working with the “strange one” Andy Kaufman. How Dick's life was saved by a pod of dolphins. Why he has two birthdays. Dick's involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Working with Walter Cronkite. Meeting his heroes… Stan Laurel and Buster Keaton. The huge regret that Dick and Mary Tyler Moore shared. Episode 31 completes our deep dive into Stan and Babe's 1929 masterpiece, Big Business. On the previous show, Episode 30, Randy Skretvedt and I discussed the film and also covered the mythology surrounding a couple of famous (or infamous) legends connected to the production - primarily Hal Roach's much-related tale that the wrong house was destroyed in error. Randy sided with Stan Laurel and thought that Hal's story was "a load of baloney". So, in this episode, I'm delighted to welcome back film historian and expert on the Hal Roach Studios, Richard W. Bann. Richard covers some little-known facts about Big Business, as well as laying out all the facts surrounding the 'wrong house' story. With both sides at our disposal, can we finally put this argument to bed once and for all? Peter's Bear themed week begins with a first for us as we review a silent movie. American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter Larry Semon collaborated three times with Stan Laurel, who went on to partner with some other guy that even I know the name of despite being pretty unknowledgeable about this era of cinema, and the second of their efforts was 1918's BEARS AND BAD MEN, a Hatfield-McCoy inspired farce about a feud between two neighbouring families which is complicated by the arrival of two bears. Featuring some convincing and imaginative special effects, creative editing and a memorable cast, the whole thing has been generously preserved for free on YouTube and is worth checking out even if it does manage to overstay its short run time a little by the end. Also featured: we mispronounce Larry Semon's name in an obvious way and Cris reveals this movie gave him narcolepsy. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Composer and musician Neil Brand brings a live show to the Electric Cinema as part of Flatpack Festival - Neil Brand Presents Laurel and Hardy is touring around the country, giving audiences a taste of Stan and Ollie's work before they were paired together, and showing us what their double act was like before the development of sound cinema. The show culminates in screenings of two of their silent shorts, Big Business and Liberty, accompanied on the piano, of course, by Neil. It's a great introduction to both Laurel and Hardy and silent comedy in general, which thrives when accompanied live. Neil's own passion for the duo, whose films he grew up with, is evident, describing their appeal to him and showing a clip of Stan, a drama he wrote about Stan visiting Ollie on his deathbed. He introduces us to the term "reciprocal destruction", a term that brilliantly distills something you immediately realise you associate with both Laurel and Hardy and the cartoons their comedy inspired: when someone attacks an opponent, the assailant must then wait for the victim to attack them in return, only then returning fire, each volley increasing in aggression and destructive power, until chaos reigns. And although we take issue with one of the chosen clips, of an early Stan Laurel film that includes a gay stereotype that is used uncritically here to earn laughs, it's a blip in an accomplished, well-constructed and entertaining show that we recommend you see. Recorded on 21st May 2022.

This meticulously researched book explores the concept of fame in all its fleeting glory and confounding inconsistency. Why do so many entertainers do so much better financially than peers who have comparable resumes? Author Donald Jeffries also examines a subject he is quite familiar with; the myriad of unnatural deaths which have plagued the entertainment industry since the dawn of Hollywood. The deaths of John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, and many others are scrutinized in exacting detail. Jeffries communicated with many older entertainers during the course of researching the book, and their perspectives are included here. On Borrowed Fame will be of great interest to fans, celebrities, and anyone with even a cursory affinity for the world of show business. If you're anything like me, and have a hard time not looking at the car crash as you drive by: You will love this book. I'm dyslexic and have difficulty reading but found it even more difficult stopping. The book showed me how very lucky I've been, pursuing my passions; Acting, Class A Speedway Racing and Inventing. - Billy Gray, Father Knows Best, The Day the Earth Stood Still Donald Jeffries' On Borrowed Fame is indeed a revelatory and painful experience. It paints the big picture of the price of Fame in Hollywood. One that mercilessly illustrates through fact and story the real price paid by many of my colleagues and myself. Fame is not a blessing, it's a curse. This book is a witness to the carnage and horrible truth of the matter. Fame is not what it appears to be on the outside. Fame is a glamorous car wreck. Fame sucks. This is an important book that tells us all as fellow human beings that attention must be paid. I congratulate Mr. Jeffries for having had the courage to write it. - Nick Mancuso, Paris 2020 “It's possible to be a musician in the biggest band imaginable, and within a few years be forced to work a regular job.” That ominous statement is echoed throughout Donald Jeffries' whirlwind of woe in the world of entertainment, On Borrowed Time. Those household name actors in your favourite TV shows you assumed were well paid and would surely always have a firm foothold in show business? Not so much it turns out, as stated here: “A regular on a television series is at least as likely to have their acting career end when their show does.” The arbitrary payment structures that seem to have been made up on the spot, the blatant rip offs and the sheer number of early and often suspicious Hollywood deaths that were rarely investigated would make anyone think twice about being an actor. What an eye opener this book is! - Graham Parker, singer-songwriter If you've ever dreamed of being famous--and who hasn't--then Donald Jeffries offers a shocking literary vaccine--so you might avoid those pitfalls. Just maybe! “On Borrowed Fame,” his juicy and richly detailed fast moving dossier, catalogues the long and winding and perilous road trod by some of the most famous names in showbiz. Those talented celebs had one thing in common: They inevitably discovered that fame does not guarantee fortune-- but is often a prescription for bankruptcy and early death. I have reported on Hollywood for nearly half a century but can attest that Jeffries has entertainingly laid out the most detailed compendium of horror stories experienced by some of tinsel town's biggest names. No one is spared--from Stan Laurel to Marlon Brando to Michael Jackson. And so, so many more. His research is formidable. This is the most fascinating chronicle of show business malfeasance, mayhem and misery I have ever read.
