Jesus calls us out of despair
Jesus calls forth the twelve apostles by name and sends them out with specific work to do. (Lectionary #315) January 23, 2026 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com
In this message from Mark 1:16–20, I reflect on the day Jesus called four fishermen to follow Him and how that same call still comes to us today. I share my own calling to ministry and invite us all to remember—or consider for the first time—what it means to leave our nets behind and follow Jesus with our whole lives. This sermon explores what it truly means to follow Christ, to be changed by Him, to love God and others, and to share the hope of the gospel with a world that desperately needs Jesus.

We live in a culture trained to judge--quick to assume motives, tear down others, and play God. Jesus warns that a judgmental spirit destroys relationships and reveals a heart disconnected from the Father. In this message, you'll learn why judgment takes root, how mercy flows from real spiritual maturity, and how walking with the Father frees you to see clearly and love well. #BibleTeaching #Judgment #MercyWhy We Judge Others--and How Jesus Calls Us Out Of It | Jeremy Robertson | 12-14-2025

The Kingdom of God, in all that it represents, is worth going All-In on. Jesus invites each of us, all of us, to go All-in with him.
In our hate-driven culture, the enemies of God seem to take delight in offending Christians. Unfortunately, followers of Jesus often take the bait. We react in anger. We hate the sin, but we often fail to love the sinner. Why is that? In today's podcast, Brad Bright exposes the lie many Christians believe regarding how to love our enemies and those who offend us. There is only one way to do it, and we often miss it. If we are to be “known by our love” God's people must apply this key truth to every difficult relationship, both inside and outside the church. Have you been struggling to love those who offend you? Do you agree with Brad's assessment of the problem? Comment below and let him know what has worked (and not worked) for you!
Change is never easy—but with Jesus, it's always worth it. In Luke 5:36–39, Jesus teaches the Parable of the New Wineskins, showing us that His Kingdom can't simply be added onto old ways of living. He didn't come to patch up our past—He came to make us NEW In this message, we explore: • Why Jesus spoke about new wine and old wineskins • The danger of clinging to old habits, traditions, or idols • How to embrace the new life Christ offers through the cross • What it means to step boldly into the future God has for you
Jesus Calls Us Before the Storm Stops: Daily Scripture Reflection for August 5, 2025 by Priests for Life
This morning's passage from Luke 6:12–16 shows us how Jesus called His apostles—but not before spending the whole night in prayer. That alone reminds us to lead with prayer when facing big decisions. From a larger group of disciples, He chose twelve very different people—like Simon the Zealot and Matthew the tax collector, who would've naturally been enemies. And yes, even Judas was called. Jesus didn't pick perfect people; He picked people willing to follow. Not everyone was in the inner circle, and that's okay—growth takes time, and faithfulness matters more than position. So wherever you are in your journey, stay prayerful, stay open, and trust that Jesus is leading you.Shameless plug: here's a link to Method(ist) to the Madness, our new, hopefully entertaining podcast about church history. - https://methodisttothemadness.buzzsprout.com/Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. The type of church that Jesus wants us to become.
In our collect for today we pray: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him… But how can we be sure? There are lots of different people and things calling for our attention. How can we know that we're hearing Jesus? How can we recognize his voice? God created us in and out of love and for love. And God's call to us is love. The frequency of God's call is goodness and mercy, compassion and forgiveness, welcome and healing. If we look for beauty, care, and community around us, we are attuning our ears to God's call. What is the Imperfection Jesus Calls Us To? Often we imagine what God is calling us to is a life of rigid perfection. But what if that was not true? What if God was calling us to the imperfect life, a life that could hold both the good and the bad together and continue to work humbly every day to add more kindness to the equation? Following Jesus – Jesus Calls Us to Follow Him Without Reservations MESSAGE SUMMARY: From the Gospel of Luke (9:51-60): Following Jesus Jesus asks us to follow Him, but it's not like He is physically here on earth with us to show us the way. We must discern His intended way for us by listening to His voice and reading His Word and by aligning ourselves with the Holy Spirit who is leading us. Part of what Jesus is teaching us in Luke 9:51-60 is to stop making excuses and reasons for not following Him. Jesus calls us to follow Him now and without reservations. Christians are not just believers in Jesus; Christians are followers of Jesus. In Matthew 10:37-39, Jesus significantly refines the context and implications of His call to us as His followers: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.". Our calls from Jesus to follow Him may, often, be moment by moment. As Jesus said to the First Century Christians: follow me today! Is Jesus the Lord, or is Jesus your Lord? You must consciously make the decision to follow Jesus because He will call you. Jesus said: “Follow me.”. Who and what are you following TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Luke 9:51-60; Matthew 10:34-42; Psalms 4:1-8.
