Satan seeks to undermine our faith in Christ and in His unchanging word.
Another guiding/foundational principle for Jesus was his mission. Jesus came so people would believe in him and have eternal life. He also came to seek and save the lost. He came to set the captives free. Arguing with someone may or may not fit within that mission. Proving himself right may or may not fit within that mission.
The well-known analogy for training experts to detect counterfeit bills is that they study the genuine article so thoroughly—its look, feel, and details—that anything false becomes immediately obvious. In the same way, Jesus was so rooted in truth that he didn't feel compelled to defend it. His deep, unwavering relationship with the Father made it impossible for others to sow doubt. This confidence allowed him to focus less on defending a position and more on delivering a message.
Jesus knew the hearts of men. He knew when people were trying to trap him and when there was genuine interest and curiosity in what he was teaching. How can we slow down our responses to people in order to uncover their motives first?

When it comes to defending faith or facing opposition there is a fleshly impulse to want to win the argument. What if that was replaced with the question, "How can I love this person?" Jesus didn't just say the greatest things to do were to love God and love your neighbor, He lived that out. Jesus used the golden rule in His life and ministry. He declares His love for humanity by living and dying for us. He charges His disciples with the task of loving one another (it's how the world will know they are His disciples) and to lay down their lives for one another. Before those lessons though, Jesus teaches His followers to love their enemies and to pray for those who persecute them.
Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Daniel Guertin from Stillwater, MN. Thank you for your partnership with us through Project23. You're helping get God's Word to people in every season of life. This one's for you. Our text today is Mark 10:32-34: And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise." — Mark 10:32-34 Jesus is leading the way up to Jerusalem—and he knows exactly what's waiting there. Condemnation. Betrayal. Mocking. Beatings. Crucifixion. And yet, he keeps walking ahead of the others. Burn that image into your minds. Most people run from pain. We try to escape it and remove it. Jesus walks steadily toward it, knowing it all, and endures to the end. He doesn't avoid the cross. He embraces it because love leads him forward. His pace isn't reluctant. It's resolved. This is the third time in Mark's Gospel that Jesus predicts his suffering and death. But this time, the details are even more vivid. He doesn't sugarcoat it. He doesn't leave it vague. He tells his followers plainly what's about to happen. And still, we see they don't fully get it. But Jesus does! He's not caught off guard. He's not a victim of circumstance. He's the Son of God on a mission. He is determined to redeem. Jesus knew—and still went. He knew the cost. He knew the pain. But he went… for you. Following Jesus means walking toward discomfort, not away from it. But that's the way of Christ. It's what we are called to do. To follow him anywhere and everywhere. Even though we don't know the suffering that lies ahead, we still follow. But we don't walk alone. We follow the One who went first—and who walked through death to bring us life. So, when you feel afraid of what lies ahead, remember this: Jesus has already walked that road—and He walks it with you now. God, the road we travel today is tough. It's filled with confusion, pain, and suffering. Some of it results from our sin, and some from the sins of others in this world. It's difficult to walk through it and keep following you. But we trust you and your guidance through the pain. In your name, we pray. Amen. #JesusLedTheWay, #CourageToFollow, #Project23 ASK THIS: What emotions does the image of Jesus “walking ahead” stir in you? Why do we sometimes hesitate to follow Jesus when the road looks difficult? How does knowing Jesus faced the cross change how you face your fears? What's one step of obedience you've been avoiding? DO THIS: Write down one area where you feel afraid to follow Jesus. Then ask Him to lead you forward with courage. PRAY THIS: Jesus, you knew the cross was coming—and you still chose to walk toward it. Help me trust you when obedience feels hard or costly. Amen. PLAY THIS: “Lead Me to the Cross."

What happened in the Garden of Gethsemane? We see the two natures of Jesus compared: His full humanity, and His full deity! On the one hand Jesus KNEW what would befall Him over the next few hours and He could face it, but on the other hand we see Him in His humanity, looking for the support of three of His closest disciples. We all may have to face “the oil press” (the meaning of Gethsemane), from time to time, but are we willing to accept whatever the WILL of God is for our lives, no matter what. We see Jesus in His humanity facing the persecution, and the impending death He would face, but we also see Jesus in His divinity, horrified and in agony of soul, at the prospect of becoming SIN for us (See 2 Cor.5:21). Fr. Eric Nicolai preached this meditation at Lyncroft Centre in Toronto on August 25th, 2024, the twenty-first Sunday of Ordinary time (year B). The focus is John 6, the denouement of the passages on the bread of life. John 6, 60-62: After hearing his doctrine many of the followers of Jesus said, ‘This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?' Jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said, ‘Does this upset you? What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before? ‘It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. "Jesus knew joy because Jesus knew God.We can lean on the strength of this joy. His joy. We don't have to live at a frenetic pace; we can let God's peace draw us in. We can suggest joy take a front seat for once, and we can be amazed at the glimmers of hope we feel. We can lean into the joyfulness of the season, even if everything around us is hard. Doing so just might be a gift He's waiting for us to open. Jesus, God with us, offers a spirit of joy that can carry us through long after the holidays. There's hope. There's joy. Christmas is coming, friends. May your heart be light. And may you have a very merry Christmas. As the end of Jesus' ministry on earth was drawing nearer, large crowds of people followed Him from each town and village. So the question someone raised in Luke 13:23 may seem unusual: “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” Jesus had spent time with the crowds. He had fed them, taught...
