Matthew 27 Pt.2 – How Judas Ended His Life!

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2025 35:12

Matthew was the only Gospel writer to record the account of what happened to Judas and how he ended his life. But Matthew gives us some very interesting insights into how the Scriptures were fulfilled even through the actions of Judas. One of the things that stands out is that Matthew is the only one to use the term ‘went and hanged himself‘ (Matt.27:5), as there is no other occurrence of that phrase elsewhere in the New Testament. However, Matthew must have known that the phrase does occur once in the LXX of 2 Sam.17:23 (i.e., the Greek translation of the Old Testament), where David's betrayer did the same thing – Ahithophel went and hung himself. Is there any connection? Well, Matthew seemed to think so, and it shows how well he knew the Old Testament, or that the Holy Spirit guided him, and the Holy Spirit reminded him of these verses. However, then when it comes to Matt.27:9-10, we might think that Matthew got it all wrong when he wrote, ‘Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah…., since you see it was actually Zechariah who wrote those words in Zech.11:11-13. So we have to ask, “What was going on there?” Well it seems that Matthew's mind was triggered by what Judas did and he saw a combination of Jer.19:1-13 and Zech.11:11-13, and put 2 and 2 together, and saw that in some way Zechariah was also fulfilled in Jer.19, and ultimately this was fulfilled through the actions of Judas. Matthew 27 Pt.1 Betrayed by His own people, and Delivered to the Gentiles!

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2025 39:50

We see from the beginning of Matthew 27 what looks like a recapping of what Matthew has already told us in Matthew 26. But NT writers were not ones to waste paper or papyrus and ink. No, what we have in the opening verses of Matt.27 is the 3rd part of the trial of Jesus before the Jewish leaders. That is not to say that we pin all the blame of the rejection of Jesus and His death only on the few religious leaders, nor do we want to blame all the Jewish people. We are told in John 1:10-13 that He who created the world came into the world and yet was not recognised for who He was. But then we are told that He came to His own, and his own people did not receive Him, and John could have ended with that, yet he went on to say, ‘but as many as did receive Him‘ He gave the right or power or ability to become the sons of God‘ which, by the way it is worded, would mean that that is not limited to Jewish people alone, but can include Gentiles too! What we find in Matt.27:1-2 is how Jesus was betrayed or delivered by His own people, into the hands of their enemy, the Romans, and that the sole purpose for doing this was to insure that Jesus would not just be killed somehow, but to insure that He would be crucified or in other words, hanged on a tree, since this would mean that Jesus had been cursed by God according to the Mosaic Law. Of course crucifixion was horrific, but even worse is that it stood for being ‘cursed‘ in the eyes of the Jews, and this would have been the goal of the Jewish leaders – to stamp out “Christianity” – i.e., that nobody would want to follow or be associated with a so-called Messiah, who had been cursed by God. Now, the early church realised this, and... Read More The post Matthew 27 Pt.1 Betrayed by His own people, and Delivered to the Gentiles! appeared first on Living Rock Church.

The religious leaders realised that they couldn't depend on the false and conflicting testimonies of those who claimed that Jesus said that He would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. And besides, that was somewhat of the expectation of what The Messiah was to do in building a New temple. So, seeing that they were getting nowhere, the High Priest Caiaphas invoked the law to adjure the witness to answer the accusations. And this time Jesus confirmed that He was indeed not only The Messiah but also the Son of God, as spoken of in Psalm 2. Now they had a problem! To accept Jesus and His claims or reject them, because to accept them meant that they now had their long awaited Messiah. And that would spell trouble in the eyes of the Romans and that was have had a domino effect on their cushy lifestyles wherein they had ruled the roost. So there was no alternative for them but to reject Jesus' claims. In fact no matter who the Messiah would turn out to be, they would have had to do the same thing. However, they knew that they couldn't legally impose the death penalty, but they felt that they had found Jesus guilty of blasphemy and for that reason was to receive the death penalty under their law, if they could have carried it out. But as we shall see, they found a way to make Jesus' guilt in their eyes, also be a grounds for accusing Him before the Romans. Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2025 32:50

Matthew has condensed his account of Jesus' “Trial” before the Jewish leadership, leaving us the impression that all was carried out before Caiaphas, whereas in reality Jesus was first taken to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the actual High Priest that year. But of course the two of them were in cahoots to have Jesus condemned. The big question was, how they would pin the death penalty on Jesus, “legally”! Was there ever anything that Jesus had said that could be used against Him? It was difficult for the Jewish leaders to find any viable false witnesses, but at last two did come forward, and yet even then their testimonies didn't line up exactly. But the claim was made that Jesus had spoken about destroying The Temple and then rebuilding it. What is most interesting is that this was a veiled Messianic Claim, and anyone versed with Messianic Predictions would have known that The Messiah would of necessity Rebuild The Temple – but why Rebuild unless the one presently standing was somehow destroyed? So you see why this point was pivotal in the Jewish leader's claim against Jesus! To watch the video from church today, just click on this link! What can we learn about Abraham's faith? We know that he believed God against incredible odds – well, actually there was NO way in the natural for Abram and Sara to have children. That is because not only was Sara barren, but later in life they still had had no children together, and now they were getting too old, well beyond the natural age for having children. And yet Abram believed God! Abram's name was changed by God to reflect this. No longer was he to be known as ‘exalted father', but to be known as ‘father of a multitude of nations', and yet with no children. However, Abraham did not DENY his circumstances and make all sorts of “Faith Confessions”, but rather his faith DEFIED the circumstances. And Abraham, experiencing miracles and having their child of promise, Isaac, born, sets the example of what God can do in us. But it is God who gives life and recreates us as New Creations and begins to work wonders in our lives! To watch the video from the church service today, just click on this link! What happened in the Garden of Gethsemane? We see the two natures of Jesus compared: His full humanity, and His full deity! On the one hand Jesus KNEW what would befall Him over the next few hours and He could face it, but on the other hand we see Him in His humanity, looking for the support of three of His closest disciples. We all may have to face “the oil press” (the meaning of Gethsemane), from time to time, but are we willing to accept whatever the WILL of God is for our lives, no matter what. We see Jesus in His humanity facing the persecution, and the impending death He would face, but we also see Jesus in His divinity, horrified and in agony of soul, at the prospect of becoming SIN for us (See 2 Cor.5:21). It was whilst going through The Passover meal on Thursday, the night before Jesus would be crucified, with His disciples, that Jesus stopped at certain intervals to make a comment. These stops seem to coincide with the 4 cups that are part of a Passover Seder. After breaking bread and blessing the 3rd cup, Jesus spoke of it as The New Covenant in His blood. Jesus would not drink from the fruit of the vine again until He would drink it New with His disciples and all those at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (See Matt.8:11-13; Rev.19:9). This may mean that on the night of The Passover, that Jesus did not partake of the 4th cup, which is usually accompanied with a prayer for God's wrath to come on the nations that despise Him. By not participating in that 4th cup, it supports the idea that the final cup that Jesus actually did partake of was that of God's wrath, when He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, that ‘this cup might pass from Him', and yet nevertheless He did partake of that cup, which He alone could drink. This one was none other than Judas Iscariot, one of the 12 Apostles. But for what reasons did Judas do what he did? At the home of Simon the leper of Bethany, a meal was prepared for a large group, who included Mary and Martha and Lazarus, and Jesus and His 12 disciples. During the dinner, whilst Jesus was reclined at the table, Mary (according to John 12) came with an alabaster flask of very expensive perfume of pure nard, and poured it out on Jesus' head and also anointed His feet. We aren't told why Mary did this, but Jesus didn't see it as a waste, as some of His disciples did, but rather as a beautiful act done for Him. In fact He said that she had done this to prepare His body for burial. And also that what she had done would be told wherever the gospel was preached. It is interesting to note that there is no further mention of “anointing” of the body of Jesus for burial, or after He died, to be found in Matthew's Gospel. So often we have heard this parable and have made several assumptions, such as the fact that the ten virgins were bridesmaids, whereas the text doesn't actually say this. Also, some have used this parable to teach or imply that a Christian could lose his or her salvation. But it is worth pointing out that at the end of this parable Jesus is quite clear when He told the five foolish virgins, “I do not know you”, which sounds just like Jesus' words in Matt.7:21-23, where He told those who thought that they were believers because of “the works and miracles” that they had claimed to have done, “Depart from Me …I NEVER knew you.” We can therefore safely say that the FIVE (50%) of those who “professed” to be virgins (symbolic of being a sanctified and justified saint), were in fact unknown to the Lord! Not only did Jesus CARRY or BEAR AWAY our sins, He also IMPUTED to the Believer His very own RIGHTEOUSNESS! We are MADE or DECLARED to be RIGHTEOUS when we exercise FAITH in the Lord Jesus Christ, and what He has done for us! To watch today's video, just click on this link! What way should the “servants” or “Slaves” of Christ be living prior to His return? We know we were once “slaves to sin” but have not been set free. But does that mean that we are “no longer slaves at all”? This also raises the question as to whether or not man is ever completely free, and concerning “free will”! There were plenty of signs and warnings leading up to the destruction of the temple in AD70, but will there be any sign to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ? Is it possible that NO ONE KNOWS the DAY or the HOUR of that event, not even the angels of heaven, nor The Son, but ONLY the Father? Well, that is what Jesus, in the body of His humiliation said. And yet so many, over the years have tried, unsuccessfully, to calculate the time of the Lord's Return. Will it come upon the World unexpectedly? Check out this teaching on Matt.24:36-44. Matthew 24 Pt.7 – The Lesson From The Fig Tree!

Some find this section of Matthew 24 to be quite problematic because in v.34 Jesus said quite plainly, “Truly, I say to you, THIS GENERATION will not pass away UNTIL ALL THESE THINGS take place.” As a result of this, even C.S. Lewis said that this is the most embarrassing verse in the Bible! Now, why would that be? Only because people with traditions have been sold on the idea that everything in Matthew 24 is speaking about future events that will happen before the Lord Returns and the End of the World. Therefore they have had to change the meaning of “this generation” to “that generation” or “those people of that race”! And yet it we took the plain meaning of the text, the literal meaning would be that Jesus was speaking to that generation alive at the time He was speaking to them, who would see ALL THESE THINGS TAKE PLACE in AD70. Some would die in the siege of Jerusalem, whilst others like the Apostle John, would outlive it, as did some of the rulers of Jesus' day! So here's the deal, because Jesus accurately prophesied ALL THESE THINGS, we can trust Him when He says all the other things, especially those that begin with the Words, “Truly, I say to you…” But in fact the words of Jesus are going to last forever (See. Matt.24:35). Matthew 24 Pt.6 – The Sign of The Son of Man!

In Matthew 24:29-31 Jesus spoke of things that would happen IMMEDIATELY AFTER the tribulation of THOSE DAYS. And THOSE DAYS that Jesus spoke of were undoubtedly those that would come upon Israel in judgement (See Lk.19:41-44; 21:20-24). The signs that Jesus spoke of in Matt.24:29 probably should not be taken literally, even as they are not taken literally when used elsewhere in the Old Testament, such as in Isa.13:10; 34:4; Ezek.32:7; Joel 2:10 & Amos 8:9. Then in V.30 Jesus spoke of ‘The Sign of The Son of Man', but doesn't say what it is. But we know that there were certain SIGNS that accompanied His First Coming. However, in Mk.13:26 and Lk.21:27 there is no mention of ANY SIGN but only of The Coming of The Son of Man on the clouds with great power and glory – an image that corresponds with Daniel 7:13-14, and which Jesus no doubt was referring to in His trial, when He answered the High Priest (Matt.26:64). So there are so many views on these verses, and today we just looked at a possible alternative that perhaps some of us have never considered. To watch today's video, just click on this link! Matthew 24 Pt.5 – False Christs and False Prophets!

What would happen if there were false Christs and False Prophets running around prior to the events that took place in AD70? They could easily mislead people into thinking that there was another Messiah who would insure victory over the Romans, but which would actually lead to the total destruction of Jerusalem in AD70. When the Legionnaire Cestius Gallus, who was Governor of Syria, decided to quash the Jewish Revolt that began in AD66, he totally failed. This would have given rise to optimism and the belief that the Jewish Revolt was a success. But once Gallus had retreated, soon General Titus came back to finish off the job. During this short interval, no doubt the Christians took the opportunity to flee from Judea to Pella in the North. The noose was beginning to tighten around Jerusalem in AD70, and Jesus predicted everything that is recorded in Luke 21:20-24. But of course there was a plan unfolding that allow the Gospel to go out to the Nations, as Paul explains in Rom.11. To watch the video from today, just click on this link! Today we looked at Matthew 24:15-22 which concerns Jesus' quoting a prophesy made by the prophet Daniel (See Dan.924-27 and Dan.11:35), which refers to a thing standing n the holy place (or temple) that makes ‘desolate'. What could Daniel have been speaking about? What could Jesus have been speaking about? There are many possibilities, but here are the top 5: 1. What Antiochus IV Epiphanes did in 167BC 2. What Emperor Gaius planned to do in AD40-41 3. What the zealots did in AD67/68 4. What the Romans did in AD70 5. A future event to be carried out by the man of lawlessness, the son of destruction (See 2 Thess.2:1-4). To view the full video from today, just click on this link!
