In today's episode I'm speaking with sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild, Professor Emerita at UC Berkeley. Her 2016 book Strangers in Their Own Land (The New Press) became influential in the wake of Donald Trump's election, largely because she crossed what she calls the empathy wall to understand people on the other side of America's political divide. Her new book – Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right (The New Press 2024) – draws on fresh field-work in Appalachian coal country. Hochschild asks what happens when communities lose jobs, pride, and dignity—and who steps in to offer it back. She uses turns to the infamous Hatfield–McCoy feud as a symbolic lens, asking whether the famous “stolen pig” which set it all off, was really about deeper shifts in status and honor that still echo today.Hochschild argues that Donald Trump is perceived as a good bad guy—someone who breaks rules and fights aggressively, yet whose supporters believe he is doing so on their behalf, reclaiming stolen pride. We unpack the deep story she hears: people waiting in line for the American Dream, growing resentful as they watch others cut ahead. You can buy the new book here. How can the war in Gaza end? Interview with Israel's ambassador

Rak höger med Ivar Arpi

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2025 57:37

A few weeks ago, the United States, aided by intelligence from Israel, carried out a significant strike against Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. This marked a critical step in Israel's ongoing efforts to neutralize Iran as an existential threat—a threat that continues to shape the security landscape across the Middle East. Meanwhile, the war in Gaza has entered its second year, and the debate in the West focuses on the civilian consequences of the war, which is perhaps understandable. But it also obscures the event that triggered it all: the horrific Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023. So if one tries to hold both of those things in mind at the same time, what would an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza look like? What is the end goal of the war?Against this backdrop, today's episode features my conversation with Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Ziv Nevo Kulman. We discuss how, paradoxically, October 7 led to a noticeable rise in antisemitism across Sweden, Europe, and—sadly—throughout the entire Western world. In parallel, Greta Thunberg has shifted her global activism from climate to pro-Palestinian issues, most recently attempting to symbolically break the maritime blockade against Gaza. I ask the ambassador about her actions and her accusations of being kidnapped by Israel. We delve deeply into Iran's role as an ever-present existential threat to Israel, and how the attack on Iran's nuclear facilities has altered the security situation in the region. Was this justified? I ask him directly about statements made by figures like Carl Bildt, who claimed that the U.S. airstrikes violated international law. We also address Sweden's recent push for the EU to impose sanctions on Israeli ministers—an initiative that the ambassador believes risks empowering extremist forces rather than promoting peace and stability. And if you're wondering why he mentions dogs at the beginning, it's because I had shared that my German shepherd accidentally bit off my fingernail. Ambassador Kulman, having grown up around German shepherds himself, ended up chatting with me about dogs before we started recording.

Why do domesticated animals develop white fur? Why do they get floppy ears? My German shepherd excluded. Surprisingly, these seemingly random traits are common indicators of domestication and friendliness. But how does this relate to us humans?Today I'm speaking with Richard Wrangham, a distinguished primatologist and professor at Harvard University, whose influential research has deeply reshaped our understanding of human evolution. Wrangham has popularized the intriguing concept of “self-domestication” through extensive academic work and especially his acclaimed book, The Goodness Paradox: The Strange Relationship Between Virtue and Violence in Human Evolution (Profile books 2019).According to Wrangham, self-domestication is an evolutionary process where humans gradually evolved by selecting against impulsive aggression, making us more cooperative, social, and even influencing our moral decisions. Yet, paradoxically, he explains that this increased peacefulness coexists with an undiminished capacity for carefully planned violence, like warfare. We are, he argues, remarkably peaceful in daily interactions, yet simultaneously capable of organizing lethal aggression on a massive scale. In our conversation, we delve into what self-domestication truly involves, what bonobos and chimpanzees reveal about our behavior, and why understanding both reactive and proactive aggression is crucial today. Wrangham challenges many common assumptions about human nature, offering insightful explanations for both the peaceful cooperation and conflict seen in our societies. This discussion matters because it encourages us to reconsider our assumptions about what it means to be human, providing deeper insights into our past, our current social dynamics, and potentially, our future.
