Today I'm speaking with Simon Critchley, philosopher and author of Tragedy, the Greeks, and Us (2019) – a book that argues tragedy offers a truer philosophy than Philosophy itself, a way of thinking that begins where certainty ends. We talk about what happens when justice stands on both sides, when virtue and flaw are inseparable, and when insight comes too late for action. For Critchley, tragedy embodies a philosophy opposed to Plato's: instead of banishing contradiction to protect reason, it lets conflict and emotion become forms of knowledge. I think this is a foundational insight: life is full of trade-offs, and we're better off when we face them head-on. Virtues can so easily turn into vices when circumstances change. And our freedom is always circumscribed by fate, even though we often give fate different names nowadays.Anyway, while we're at it, I should mention the title of his latest, and fantastic, book: I Want to Die, I Hate My Life (2025). It do be like that sometimes (the book is excellent, by the way.) En SR-medarbetare i Gaza samtidigt drivit Hamas-anknutna bojkottkampanjer, och hur islamistiska nätverk fått fäste i svenska moskéer. Och så konflikten på Ship to Gaza, där en queeraktivist på båten blev startskottet för en kulturkrock som blottade sprickorna i alliansen mellan västliga aktivister och islamister.Gemensamt för dessa händelser är att vi inte hade fått veta om dem om det inte hade varit för Sofie Löwenmark. Hon driver Doku som granskar jihadism och islamism i Sverige, vilket ytterst få andra journalister gjort och gör.I sociala medier fick hon nyligen sitt namn placerat över en blodstänkt Davidsstjärna med ordet ”lögnpressen”. Goebbels favorituttryck. Samma aktivister anmälde henne till Journalistförbundets nämnd – inte för felciteringar, utan för hennes granskningar. Det är en sorts lawfare som dessa grupper satt i system – de använder rättsstaten när det kan gagna dem, men struntar i samma regler när den hindrar dem själva.Samtidigt häromdagen, utanför Bokmässan, höll namnkunniga författare och andra upp plakat med bilder och namn på enskilda svenska journalister som pekades ut som folkmördare. Enligt Adam och Arvid var det redaktören som satte rubriken – men det hindrar ju inte oss andra från att spinna vidare på kärleksmetaforen.Rapporten innehåller 132 förslag: att avveckla moralministerier som Jämställdhetsmyndigheten och MR-institutet, till att halvera public service, ersätta flerbarnstillägg med barnavdrag, lämna kvotflyktingsystemet, utvisning av grovt kriminella som misstänks för allvarlig brottslighet, införandet av en opinionsbildningslag för myndigheter, med mera. Var det en markering om blod och ursprung – eller, som hon senare skrev på Expressen Debatt, en samtidsspaning om att frågor om svensk kultur ofta bärs av företrädare med invandrarbakgrund?I dagens avsnitt pratar jag med folklivsskildraren och författaren Dan Korn. Han har i decennier dokumenterat svensk allmogekultur och skrivit om identitet, religion och nationalism.
