Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt stuck with your own body—in a similar way you’ve felt stuck with alcohol? That exhausting push-pull. The promises. The shame. The “why do I keep doing this?” on repeat. If that sounds familiar, this conversation is for you. For the woman who’s tried willpower, plans, promises, and prayers—yet still feels stuck in the cycle of body image battles, emotional eating, and quiet self-criticism. Friend, you are not alone. And you are not broken. Leanne joins us to share her powerful story of moving from food addiction and shame to true healing—rooted in both neuroscience and the unshakable love of God. What once felt like a personal failure of discipline became a holy revelation: real change happens when we understand our nervous system, renew our minds, and invite God into the process with us. In this episode, we talk honestly about how self-image shapes our choices, why “knowing better” isn’t the same as healing, and how faith and neuroscience beautifully work together to bring lasting freedom. Just like with alcohol, you’ll hear how the breakthrough didn’t come from trying harder—but from partnering with God differently. You’ll also hear how Leanne learned to separate who she is from what she struggled with—and how that shift opened the door to peace, empowerment, and a new identity grounded in Christ. If you’ve ever wondered why you keep doing the very thing you swore you wouldn’t—whether with food, alcohol, or anything else—this episode will remind you: you’re not failing—you’re in formation. And God isn’t standing at a distance. He’s right in the middle of your becoming.
Winning When You’re Tired, Anxious, and Under Attack Most Christians aren’t losing the battle because their faith is weak, they’re losing because their thought life is unprotected. In this episode, Jon exposes the real frontline of spiritual warfare: the mind. Anxiety, intrusive thoughts, burnout, comparison, and identity lies are not just emotional struggles, they’re spiritual attacks with mental symptoms. Jon walks you through how the enemy weaponizes your thoughts, how to tear down strongholds, and how to renew your mind with the Word of God so you can finally walk in clarity, confidence, and peace. If you’ve felt overwhelmed mentally, spiritually exhausted, or trapped in your own head, this episode gives you the tools, Scriptures, and Spirit-led truths you need to win the war for your mind and live the life of The Uncommon Christian. Your mind is a battlefield, and the enemy knows it. In this episode, Jon shows you how to defeat anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and spiritual exhaustion by taking back control of your thought life through the power of God’s Word and the renewing of your mind. This is the roadmap to winning the war in your head and walking in uncommon clarity and freedom.
This week, we’re leaning into the season of Thanksgiving, and talking about how gratitude really does change everything.
Best-selling author and pastor Max Lucado joins Levi and Jennie to talk taming your thoughts, grandparent joy, and the kind of hope that actually holds. Max shares the wild family headline—three daughters pregnant at once—and how becoming “Papa Max” has reshaped his rhythms and perspective. They dive into Max's new book, Tame Your Thoughts: Three Tools to Renew Your Mind and Transform Your Life, walking through “picky thinking,” spotting the “UFOs” (untruth → false narrative → overreaction), and the practice of uprooting lies and replanting truth. The conversation gets practical on media intake, the real brain/relationship fallout of porn, and Max's storyteller toolkit—from dog tales to Amelia Earhart—and why the message must always lead the illustration. They wrap with a glimpse of Max's “The Only One” series on the uniqueness of Christ and a quick nod to tattoos (yes, really). This week’s episode is a little different. We’re pulling back the curtain on one of our BJDW Community Masterclasses, the kind of deep, beautiful, heart-level conversations we host each month with special guests to encourage our community gals on the journey to freedom. We’re joined by Sharon Hodde Miller, author of Free of Me and Gazing at God, to unpack the root of insecurity, and why we often feel insecure when we’re standing on something shaky. Sharon shares how our culture has taught us to treat insecurity by focusing more on ourselves… when the real freedom comes from shifting our gaze to God. She talks about why self-focus is exhausting, what true biblical self-denial looks like (hint: it’s not self-rejection), and how to spot when we’ve made something about us that was never meant to be. If you’ve ever found yourself striving for validation, wrestling with comparison, or feeling “not enough” in your faith, parenting, or purpose, this conversation is going to offer you so much encouragement!.
Have you ever wondered why traditional recovery works for some people—but didn’t quite fit for you? This week, we’re pulling back the curtain with our friend and BJDW team member Heather whose journey to freedom started inside a rehab program that followed a 12-step model…and ended in a deeper, Jesus-led transformation. Heather opens up about what she learned, what didn’t resonate, and how she found freedom—not just sobriety—through faith, community, and truth. If you’ve ever felt out of place in traditional recovery, or wrestled with words like powerless and alcoholic, this conversation is going to set something free inside you.
True Beauty is not about the mirror—it's about the soul.In a world that screams that your outward appearance is your ultimate value, God is calling His daughters to a radically different standard. Pastor Dennis references the story of Queen Esther, a woman who rose above her peers not because of a flawless exterior, but because of a fierce and distinguished inward beauty—the beauty of character, courage, and a surrendered spirit. The world's definition of beauty is a cruel, ticking clock. It demands perfection, promises satisfaction, and then inevitably fades, leaving behind insecurity and disappointment. We all know that no amount of external glamour can stop the relentless march of time, but the world continues to chase a temporary illusion. This message challenges every woman to shift her focus from the fleeting to the forever. Esther's true crown wasn't the one placed on her head, but the one forged in her heart. She was prepared, not just with royal treatments, but with a deep, inner work that would equip her to save a nation.
Today we’re joined by one of the world’s leading experts on teen drinking and prevention—Professor Rob Turrisi, a Penn State researcher whose 35+ years of work have shaped national programs through MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and schools across the U.S. In this important and hope-filled conversation, Professor Turrisi unpacks why teens start drinking, what actually works when it comes to prevention, and how parents can foster healthy, connected relationships that reduce risk and build trust. If you’re a parent, mentor, teacher, or anyone who cares about the next generation, this episode offers both science and a compassionate look at what helps, what doesn’t, and how small, everyday actions can have lifelong impact.
Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our theme "Five Stunning Realities of the Gospel. Our scripture reference was Mark 6:14-29. We had a great discussion on the power of conviction, especially through the Gospel. We are all convicted of something or by someone every day, but what are our actions? What is the power behind those actions? Pastor, speaker, and award-winning author, Max Lucado, helped us learn ways to tame our thoughts. His new book is called "Tame Your Thoughts: 3 Tools to Renew Your Mind and Transform Your Life". We must guard our thoughts and weed out unhealthy thought patterns. It's vital to separate the present issue from the real issue. We also talked with Dr. Michael Rydelnik. He is Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies and Bible at MBI. Dr. Rydelnik is the host of the radio program Open Line. Dr. Rydelnik (as well as Karl) will be speaking at The Summit on Israel and the Last Days Conference on November 8th at the Moody Bible Institute. He also shared his family history and testimony as a Jewish believer. You can listen to the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Welcome back to the show, friend. Today's episode is one that will touch the deepest parts of your heart — especially if you've ever walked through a birth that didn't go the way you hoped. I'm sitting down with Mckenzie, who has experienced two very different homebirth stories. Her first was a grueling 30+ hour birth that left her feeling like both her body and God had betrayed her. She had done all the physical prep — every stretch, every supplement, every bit of control she could — and still found herself in the middle of the very story she thought she'd avoid. But God wasn't done writing her birth story. When Mckenzie became pregnant again, she knew something had to change. This time, it wasn't about controlling every outcome — it was about surrender. She told her husband the hospital wasn't an option, and instead of preparing harder, she asked, “Lord, how can I surrender more?” In this episode, Mckenzie shares the five specific prayers she brought before God, how He faithfully answered each one — and even how He showed up when one of them wasn't answered the way she expected. If you've ever wrestled with disappointment, fear, or doubt in your birth journey, this story will remind you that God's faithfulness never fails — and that when we surrender the outcome, He writes something far more beautiful than we ever could. ✨ And friend, if you're wanting to learn how to surrender your birth to Jesus like Mckenzie did — to take what you know in your head and anchor it in your heart — then you'll want to grab your ticket for the Renew Your Mind for Birth Masterclass on October 24th at 12:30pm CST. It's just $7 to come meet other homebirth moms and walk through practical exercises that will help you watch fear leave and faith rise. Pastor Steve Austin joins me to unpack his new book Power Prayers—a scripture-saturated guide with 140+ targeted prayers to cover healing, soul restoration, marriage, family, finances, and more. We dive into why praying God's Word is the most effective way to pray, how to “pray the promise, not the problem,” and why praying aloud strengthens faith as the Word gets into your hearing and renews your mind. You'll hear how the Holy Spirit led Steve to pen compassionate prayers for deep wounds and how bathing in scripture shifts heaviness into hope. If you've struggled to find the words, this will give you a strong foundation you can personalize and declare daily. On Healthy Waves, host Avik Chakraborty explores how inner change sticks when faith-driven mindset work meets neuroscience—and where ancient botanicals can (and can't) support calm focus. Dr. Laurette Willis (founder, Weight Loss Without Willpower) breaks down renewing the mind (Romans 12:2), CBT-based tools, and a quick bilateral stimulation reset for cravings. Entrepreneur Robert Lattig (Healing Herbals & Roots Kava Bar) shares the cultural roots and modern research interest around Sceletium (Kana) and Kava, plus ethical sourcing with Indigenous partners in South Africa. Together, they examine belief, habit loops, neuroplasticity, and practical daily rituals—without romanticizing shortcuts or ignoring safety. About the guests : Dr. Laurette Willis — Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, Christian Neuro-Coach; creator of Weight Loss Without Willpower and PraiseMoves. Focus: renewing the mind with Scripture and habit change tools. Robert Lattig — Founder, Healing Herbals & Roots Kava Bar; e-commerce herbal entrepreneur invested in farm-to-formula supply and cultural stewardship for Kana/Kava. Key takeaways: Renewing the mind is daily work: observe thoughts, interrupt the loop, replace with truth-based affirmations (e.g., 2 Corinthians 10:4–5; 1 Corinthians 6:12). Bilateral stimulation (simple left-right passing of an object) can help disrupt craving pathways when paired with a boundary statement. Neuroplasticity supports lasting change when beliefs, behaviors, and body cues align—awareness before action. Kana/Kava are discussed for calm focus and emotional regulation; any use should be informed, legal in your region, and medically supervised if you take prescriptions. Ethics matter: honoring plant origins means fair employment, local reinvestment, and transparent sourcing—not extraction. A sustainable ritual: combine a 2-minute thought audit, bilateral reset, and a values-aligned affirmation; if exploring botanicals, start with education and clinician guidance. How to connect with the guests: Dr. Laurette Willis: Free mini-course — http://christianweightlosskit.com/ , free gift for listeners, "The Faith-Fueled Weight Loss Blueprint." It comes with a Downloadable Guide and Mini-Course Training video for women of faith who feel stuck in the cycle of overeating and regain. Robert Lattig: Healing Herbals & Roots Kava Bar (first-time offer mentioned in episode) Educational only. Not medical advice. Do not start/stop medication or supplements without guidance from a qualified clinician. Individual responses vary; research is ongoing.” Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Today, John talks about how Paul understood that we cannot live a life of peace and joy without first tending to the garden of our thoughts. If our thinking is careless, our living will be reactive and restless. But when our minds are filled with truth and beauty, our lives begin to reflect the light of Christ. Stories like those of heroes in Saving Private Ryan or the humble villagers in Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed help reorient our thoughts toward honor, purity, and courage. They remind us that goodness is not abstract; it's alive and visible in acts of faithfulness.Become New is here to help you grow spiritually one day at a time.TEXT US at 855-888-0444EMAIL US at connect@becomenew.comGET OUR WEEKDAY EMAILS WITH EXTRA GOODIES at becomenew.com/subscribeGET A TEXT REMINDER FOR NEW VIDEOS: text BECOME to 855-888-0444SEND US PRAYER REQUESTS: via text or email; we'll send you a written prayer from our team

Today's episode is such a beautiful reminder that God truly is in the details. My guest, Michelle Wolf, is a mom of two who lives in Mexico. She chose homebirth for both of her babies, and while her first didn't go the way she had hoped — including a difficult recovery after tearing — God used her second birth story to show His faithfulness in such a powerful way. For baby number two, Michelle and her family traveled five hours to their midwife's home, and once again, God showed up — not just in the timing of everything, but in His presence as He met Michelle in her fear of tearing again. This episode is a testament that God knows the desires of your heart because He's the one who places them there. He designed birth with purpose and order, and when we follow His blueprint, blessings abound. But before we dive into Michelle's story, I have an exciting announcement to share. I've really been seeking the Lord lately about what He wants for this podcast and my role in the birth world — how I can best bring glory and honor to Him. And to be honest, I've been in such a season of transition. It's been stretching and uncomfortable… kind of like that moment in labor when you think you can't go any further, and that's exactly when transformation happens. Well, that transformation is here. I've gotten clear confirmation from the Lord to close down the coaching side of my business — something I've loved and invested so much into. And while it doesn't make sense on paper, I feel an incredible peace about it. Now don't worry — you can still work with me! It's just going to look a little different. ✨ This month, I'm hosting a brand-new masterclass called Renew Your Mind for Birth — a practical, faith-filled workshop designed to help you prepare for your God-designed homebirth. You'll learn what surrendering your birth to Jesus really looks like, uncover subconscious fears that might be sabotaging your pregnancy and homebirth dreams, and connect with other women who are preparing for a Jesus-centered birth experience. It's happening October 24th at 12:30pm CST on Zoom, and if you can't make it live, don't worry — I'll send you the replay so you won't miss a thing. We discuss what it means to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5), renew our minds (Romans 12:2), and dwell on what is true (Philippians 4:8). Max shares how Scripture can become a filter for truth, helping us identify and replace the lies of our thoughts and emotions with God’s promises. Trust me, this is a conversation you don’t want to miss. Resources & Links:

We've all heard it - “renew your mind.” It's one of those phrases that sounds powerful on Sunday, but feels impossible on Monday when negative thoughts won't quit. I know that cycle personally: waking up already discouraged, fighting fear before the day even starts, and wondering if I was broken because I couldn't just “think positive.” What I had to learn is that renewing your mind isn't about ignoring your thoughts or stuffing them down; it's about inviting God into the process of noticing, naming, and replacing what isn't true. That's what we're unpacking in this episode. But what if there's something else going on--something related to our brain's wiring? And what if our choices today have the power to rewire our brain off self-destructive and self-defeating thoughts and actions and onto those that are life-giving? In this episode, host Jennifer Slattery talks with Dr. Alan Weissenbacher on our brains' capacity to rewire itself, replacing maladaptive programming with that which helps us thrive?
