I'm joined by Nikunja, a musician and yoga teacher who bridges the creative arts with ancient philosophy. Following a path of devotion — known as Bhakti yoga — Nikunja teaches the embodiment of the Bhagavad Gita as a way of life. Nikunja has reimagined chapters from the Gita as part of a project to illuminate yoga's sacred nature, which extends far beyond physical postures. In exploring the Gita's ancient wisdom, we discuss the divine intellect, reading sacred scripture as a spiritual practice, the art of listening, the nuances of yoga philosophy across traditions, single-pointed devotion as a pathway to union with God, the nature of the soul and the supreme self, the overlooked value of the teacher / student dynamic, and much more. In September, Nikunja will be performing at the Bhakti Fest in California. She will be sharing music on the main stage and conducting a workshop. Are you ready to journey through a healing sanctuary? In this first of three interviews by Reverend Tom Ziegert, Reverend Dr. Beth Cooper, a Christian elder and holistic health practitioner, takes us along her personal path of physical and mental healing. With an array of techniques from massage to tuina, acupressure to somatic experience, she has woven a remarkable tapestry of healing at the Bhakti Fest. At one point, our host, Tom grappled with depression, and through the guidance of his chiropractor, discovered the transformative powers of amino acid therapy and dietary changes. Tom's candid sharing of personal experiences in juxtaposition with Beth's healing modalities is truly inspiring. The episode takes an intriguing turn as we delve into the fascinating history of massage, linking it back to French missionaries and the ancient Chinese art of tuina. The discussion emphasizes the necessity of touch and connection in healing and the importance of equipping ourselves with a diverse set of healing tools. We also reflect on the critical role healers play in our society, especially in managing trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, and stress. Whether you're on a healing journey yourself or seeking to understand more about holistic health practices, this episode with Dr. Beth Cooper offers revealing insights into the power of holistic healing.

Her research engages the global exportation, appropriation, and circulation of Hinduism, with designated attention to global guru movements. On her previous visit to Spirit Matters we discussed her book about Mata Amritanandamayi, Reflections of Amma: Devotees in a Global Embrace. On this program we focused on her new book, White Utopias: The Religious Exoticism of Transformational Festivals, which analyzes yoga practice and the intersections of whiteness and religious exoticism among the “spiritual, but not religious” (SBNR) at global transformational festivals such as such as Bhakti Fest, Wanderlust, Lightning in a Bottle, and Burning Man. New Orleans' Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band create a universal style of cross-cultural spiritual music filtered through the depth, sincerity, and soul of their own American and ancestral roots. Their music merges conscious lyrics, sacred chants from the spiritual traditions of yoga and beyond, and roots, rock, gospel, and global grooves. They are known for creating interactive, soul-stirring songs to dance and sing along with as well as to grieve and heal. In 2005, Seán founded the band as a post-hurricane Katrina philanthropic music project, raising funds across the country for relief from the devastation of the storm. The theme of searching for grace and inspiration amidst challenge and destruction has permeated their music ever since. In 2007, they released their first album, ‘Calling The Spirits' which caught the ears of pioneering Canadian record producer Terry McBride, founder of Nettwerk Records and Lilith Fair. McBride signed the band to Nettwerk for the release of their follow-up album, ‘Devaloka.' When Putumayo World Music founder, Dan Storper heard ‘Devaloka,' he chose music off the record to be featured on Putumayo's first compilation of music designed for yoga. Inclusion on three Putumayo albums has helped propel the band's music to listeners across the globe. Their last album ‘Unity' debuted #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart and #3 on Billboard. Their upcoming album ‘Mystery' will be released on October 29th on Be Still Records. They are a favorite headliner at conscious music festivals across the U.S. and have played The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on multiple occasions. In addition to being a musician, Seán is also a respected yoga teacher and teacher trainer who teaches at conferences and retreat centers internationally including Yoga Journal, Kripalu, Bhakti Fest, and The German Yoga Conference. He is the founder of Wild Lotus Yoga in his beloved hometown dubbed "New Orleans' Home for Heart-Centered Yoga," and Soul School, an interdisciplinary yoga teacher training program that focuses on teaching yoga with skill, heart, and imagination that he guides with Mitchel Bleier. He has a Master's degree from The Naropa Institute-Oakland with focus on teaching chant as spiritual practice, apprenticing there with south Indian musician and teacher Russill Paul, author of 'The Yoga Of Sound.' He is the co-curator and coordinator of Putumayo World Music's yoga music series. Seán is passionate about his Irish roots and ancestry, a pillar of his spirituality. He co-leads online Celtic Spirituality gatherings and retreats in Ireland each year with his friend, Ireland native Mary Meighan, founder of Celtic Journeys. In all these roles, Seán relishes creating a playful, tender, brave space for people to open their hearts and voices, and embrace their innate creativity.   For more info, visit www.SeanJohnsonAndTheWildLotusBand.com   You can also connect with Seán on Instagram and Facebook. Transformational festivals, from Burning Man to Lightning in a Bottle, Bhakti Fest, and Wanderlust, are massive events that attract thousands of participants to sites around the world.  In White Utopias: The Religious Exoticism of Transformational Festivals (University of California Press, 2020), Amanda J. Lucia shows how these festivals operate as religious institutions for "spiritual, but not religious" (SBNR) communities. Whereas previous research into SBNR practices and New Age religion has not addressed the predominantly white makeup of these communities, White Utopias examines the complicated, often contradictory relationships with race at these events, presenting an engrossing ethnography of SBNR practices. Lucia contends that participants create temporary utopias through their shared commitments to spiritual growth and human connection. But they also participate in religious exoticism by adopting Indigenous and Indic spiritualities, a practice that ultimately renders them exclusive, white utopias. Focusing on yoga's role in disseminating SBNR values, Lucia offers new ways of comprehending transformational festivals as significant cultural phenomena. Learn more about your ad choices. Due in part to the popularity of festivals like Bhakti Fest and the modern Kirtan movement, people all over the United States are familiar with the word Bhakti. But what does it really mean? Is it a feeling, a practice, a religion? And what does it have to do with the modern postural yoga practice that has spread throughout the world? Join us with Naren Schreiner as we explore what Bhakti Yoga is and how it might influence a Hatha Yoga or meditation practice, and how it can affect your daily life. Our guest, Naren Schreiner, lived as a monk for fourteen years in the ashrams of Paramahansa Yogananda, before leaving monastic life to continue his spiritual practice out in the world. In 2012, he founded Sangita Yoga, to help spread the yoga of music through lectures, workshops and sacred music. "Now when my friends tell me they wish they had met Osho, I tell them that they have; he's in every note Deva and I sing - in every breath we take. That's what happens when you sit with the guruji - he/she dissolves into you until you become aware of the divine presence all the time, whatever you're doing, the presence is with you - tangible." - Miten Miten established a successful career in the 70's and 80's as a singer/songwriter, touring with such bands as Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed and Ry Cooder. Ultimately, he found the rock 'n' roll life-style unfulfilling and empty, and he began an inner search which led him into the world of meditation. It was at this time he came upon the most important and influential figure in his life, the mystic, Osho. Miten proceeded to live his explorations, spending most of his time in India at the ashram of Osho, where he eventually found a way to express his gratitude through music.  In 1990, Miten met Deva Premal in India and soon began a journey into love and creativity that has taken their inspiring blend of song, mantra and meditation to a worldwide audience. They have released a string of acclaimed CDs with international sales of nearly one million, and their concerts and ecstatic chant workshops are met with rave reviews throughout Europe, Australia, South America, Canada and the U.S. Deva Premal and Miten will perform at Bhakti Fest in Joshua Tree, CA on Friday, September 5th. Visit www.devapremalmiten.com Get the OFF TO WORK CD by Sister Jenna, like America Meditating on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Bhakti Fest is a Yoga/Dance/Music Festival celebrating the devotional path with roots in yoga, kirtan, and meditation. It embraces ancient and modern sacred wisdom, traditional and non-traditional spiritual practices, and is a vehicle for evolution of human consciousness. Fest producer Sridhar Steven Silberfein has been on a personal spiritual quest for over 40 years, while blending a life as a pioneering businessman. In 1969, Sridhar brought Swami Satchidananda to Woodstock, at which time he committed to someday producing the spiritual equivalent of Woodstock, now embodied in the three Bhakti Fests: Shakti Fest, Bhakti Fest Midwest, and the original Bhakti Fest held every September since 2009. In 1970 he established the first health food store in Southern California, and brought skin care products with jojoba and tea tree oil to America for the first time. He established the non-profit Center for Spiritual Studies (CSS) and co-founded the Triloka recording label, which has helped launch the careers of today's most popular kirtan artists.REAL FEAR 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND (MORE) MOVIES premieres Friday, 9/6 at 9pE on Chiller.  In this two-hour special, paranormal investigators Katrina Weidman, Richard Dolan, John McGarry, Chris Holt and Becky Weingrad explore the terrifying factual stories behind horror movies THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT; THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT; FIRE IN THE SKY, and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.
