Nashville-based platinum-selling indie artist Judah Akers of Judah & the Lion goes deep on the five stages of grief and finding beauty in the midst of pain.PART ONEPaul and Scott dive deep on how Nashville has transformed into a very different kind of "Music City USA."PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Judah AkersABOUT JUDAH AKERSJudah Akers is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter of Judah & The Lion. Their debut EP, Sweet Tennessee, was released in 2013, climbing to #2 on Billboard's Bluegrass Albums chart and the Top 15 on the Folk Albums chart. And the first full-length album, Kids These Days, debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard's Folk Albums chart. Expanding their sound, the band released Folk Hop n' Roll in 2015, landing in the Top 10 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and the Americana/Folk Albums chart. Later that year, the song “Take it All Back” hit the top of the Alternative Songs chart for three weeks and was later certified Platinum. The follow-up single, “Suit and Jacket,” was certified Gold. Judah & the Lion's third album, Pep Talks, hit the Top 20 on Billboard's Top 200, and the Top 5 on the Alternative Albums chart, while the singles “Over My Head” and “Why Did You Run” performed well on the Alternative Songs chart, earning them iHeart's Best New Alternative Artist award for 2018. Their most recent album is The Process, released in May of 2024. Built around the concept of the five stages of grief, the songs are Akers' exploration of his own mental health and life circumstances that find beauty, purpose, and even joy in the midst of the pain.
Judah & the Lion's new album, The Process, is divided into five different stages, one for each stage of grief as described by Swiss psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross. So there are songs about denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Judah Akers was moved to create the album after a series of incidents in his life, including suicides in his family, the collapse of his marriage, and the development of an unwelcome alcohol habit. We talk with Judah about his recording but also about positive experiences with talk therapy, with neurofeedback therapy, and his relationship with God.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. We opened the service with a song called, Fullness of God by Judah. Judah Akers just released his debut album this year. He is a part of the band, Judah & the Lion, as well. Here is what he said about the album, “There came a point this year when a friend's suicide sent me into a depressed spiral I could not physically pull myself out of. That's where worship began again for me. A broken human in need of Jesus' unapologetic, unwavering, constant love, hope, peace, grace for me. And as I pondered all that He's done for me I came to a place where I had to share it with you. My hope is to scream out Christ's love to followers and doubters alike, and share the real grace and redemption that's been found by someone walking in their shoes.” The song Fullness of God pulls its lyrics directly from Ephesians 3:14-21, which is the passage that we will be looking at tonight. In this passage, Paul prays for spiritual strength for himself, and all believers. Background: In verse 1 of Ephesians 3, Paul begins by stating, “For this reason…” as he begins a prayer for power/spiritual strength. He interrupts himself and begins discussing the great mystery of both Jews and Gentiles being united in Christ (Ephesians 2:13-22). Here the word “mystery” means something that was not known before. In the first portion of Ephesians 3, Paul discusses the fact that believers are responsible to proclaim that we are all unified in Christ due to the sacrifice of Jesus and we should proclaim this wherever we go, and that we should not be discouraged due to suffering. Verse 14 picks up with the same phrase of, “For this reason…” as Paul is now continuing the prayer for spiritual strength that he started in verse 1. We are going to look at what spiritual strength entails. We are going to look at three ways to have spiritual strength.

A Nashville-based indie folk trio helmed by singer/songwriter Judah Akers, Judah & the Lion blend harmonies and acoustic instrumentation with soaring pop melodies and hooks with occasional electronic elements. After an early CCM phase, the band transitioned into a secular act and found chart success with their 2014 debut, Kids These Days. Their breakout came two years later with the single "Take It All Back," from their sophomore album, which featured a curious melding of hip-hop and indie folk that topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in 2016. This week’s guest is one of those people insecure guys like me can’t stand. Not only is Judah Akers building an incredible music career in his band, Judah & The Lion, but before that, he was a star collegiate ATHLETE, playing baseball for the Belmont Bruins. If that weren’t enough to make you hate the guy, he’s really handsome AND genuinely kind too. I sat down with Judah in front of a small audience in Nashville at the sneaker and streetwear shop, ROOTED to talk about his journey and how he’s coping with the growing pains of being in a burgeoning folk hop & roll band. I hope you enjoy this week’s conversation with Judah & The Lion’s Judah Akers.
Judah & The Lion frontman Judah Akers joins me on the show today. We talk about all things J&TL as well as his personal journey from college baseball to rock n roll. We talk about twerking at family parties & much much more.
