Nashville-based platinum-selling indie artist Judah Akers of Judah & the Lion goes deep on the five stages of grief and finding beauty in the midst of pain.PART ONEPaul and Scott dive deep on how Nashville has transformed into a very different kind of "Music City USA."PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Judah AkersABOUT JUDAH AKERSJudah Akers is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter of Judah & The Lion. Their debut EP, Sweet Tennessee, was released in 2013, climbing to #2 on Billboard's Bluegrass Albums chart and the Top 15 on the Folk Albums chart. And the first full-length album, Kids These Days, debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard's Folk Albums chart. Expanding their sound, the band released Folk Hop n' Roll in 2015, landing in the Top 10 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and the Americana/Folk Albums chart. Later that year, the song “Take it All Back” hit the top of the Alternative Songs chart for three weeks and was later certified Platinum. The follow-up single, “Suit and Jacket,” was certified Gold. Judah & the Lion's third album, Pep Talks, hit the Top 20 on Billboard's Top 200, and the Top 5 on the Alternative Albums chart, while the singles “Over My Head” and “Why Did You Run” performed well on the Alternative Songs chart, earning them iHeart's Best New Alternative Artist award for 2018. Their most recent album is The Process, released in May of 2024. Built around the concept of the five stages of grief, the songs are Akers' exploration of his own mental health and life circumstances that find beauty, purpose, and even joy in the midst of the pain.
Everyone knows that Nashville has been called Music City USA for eons. Everywhere you turn, there's music, and not just of the country variety. If you had the time, you could watch concerts nightly. It hasn't always been that way. Things started changing when they revitalized the Lower Broadway area. But enjoying shows every night may be the dream of someone visiting. But for those living in residential areas, we want our quiet time, that is, unless you live next door to a starving musician... This week we welcome Tim Atwood! Tim Atwood hails from East Peoria, Illinois, where he began his music career playing gospel music at the age of thirteen for The Harris Family. It wasn't long before Tim decided music was his calling and headed to Music City USA. Tim immediately began touring with country legends Mel Street, Lynn Anderson and Jim Ed Brown, before settling in at the Grand Ole Opry, where he racked up over 8,500 Grand Ole Opry performances to his credit. Tim successfully transitioned from the spotlight's fringe where he played piano for Grammy award winners and CMA “Entertainers of the Year” to the center stage where he performs his high energy stage show for eager audiences all over the world. Tim Atwood is known as an Entertainer's Entertainer — one of the highest compliments you can receive in the music industry. And why not? This multi-award-winning piano virtuoso learned from the best. With recent television appearances on the Hallmark channel's Home & Family show, Fox News, RFD-TV's Larry's Country Diner and the television series Country Family Reunion: Another Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting, new converts to Tim's music have discovered what long time Atwood fans have known all along: Tim Atwood has a voice! Tim is a stylist who feels every song he sings, and in turn, the audience feels it too. Perhaps Grammy award winner and Grand Ole Opry matriarch Jeannie Seely summed up Tim's talents best when she said, “Tim Atwood will have his audience laughing at one of his many road stories delivering his lines with a quick wit and country boy charm. Then he'll fire that audience up like only he can – bopping his head and raking his foot across those keys – the audience clapping their hands and singing along, and just like that, he belts out a poignant ballad that puts a lump in their throats and a tear in their eyes. Tim Atwood is an entertainer!” With recent nods for Entertainer of the Year by the Reunion of Professional Entertainers and Male Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists, Tim received the 2017 R.O.P.E. award for “Musician of the Year” and was named by the Genuine Country Music Association as their 2017 “Fan Favorite.” In June 2018, Tim was inducted into the ALM Musician's Hall of Fame. While he enjoys performing his own show and recording his own projects, Tim continues to be a sought-after studio musician in Nashville. For more information and tour dates, visit TimAtwood.com.

When Derek Ventura who enjoyed major success early in his career as lead singer of the iconic group, The Drifters decided 5 years ago to hone his talents in the Live music capital of the world, Branson, Missouri, little did he know the opportunities that would await him. Having his own show in tribute to his days with the legendary group The Drifters, called “Doo Wop and The Drifters, not only garnered rave reviews from tourists and locals alike, but also won the group “Male Singing Group of the year” at the Branson Show Awards in 2018 racking up various nominations at the Branson Terry Awards recently. If that's not enough, Derek met the challenge to produce a new show, critics are presently raving about called, “Dancing in the Streets – A Motown Revue”, which tells the true story of how a man who borrowed $800 from his family kitty, turned it into the empire we know today called Motown Records. A high-energy, fun show covering the music of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and many others. In 2020, realizing Branson needed it's own showplace for Rhythm and Blues shows, he and his wife and business partner, Kay Ventura decided to open the “Ruby Room Theater and Lounge” in the Majestic Steakhouse building where both shows appear nightly. My show has been dedicated to entrepreneurs. Creators of percussive instruments that increase the sonic nature of music. The "Mark Tree" and the water phone, the Gravity Adjusters Expansion Band and New Music of the West. My show has also been dedicated to the congero. The hand drum that was introduced to this country by Dizzy Gillespie when he brought Chano Pozo to the states. The same can be said for Armando Peraza who started with George Shearing then Cal Tjader and eventually his own career. My show has also been dedicated to the original masters like Buddy Rich and Earl Palmer, Max Roach and Cozy Cole, Elvin Jones and Ron Tutt. Guys who played light but fierce. Using smaller sticks and playing less notes but finding a way t contribute to the session and elevate the music to a higher level. My guest today fits into all three of these dedicated themes. He is a creator of rhythm using one hand to create the beat which frees up his other hand to add splashes of colors and polyrhythms to create space within the music. He has made many of his own drums out of barrels and clay. My guest is a congero in his own right. He developed his chops seeing the world in the US Navy Band touring South America and other middle world continents where the intoxicating sounds of Mongo Santamaria pulsated my guests brain. He has used the cungas in non traditional country settings or bluegrass settings since settling down in Music City USA in 1970. And like the original masters he can swing the band in an authentic fashion because of feel. He has enhanced countless sessions from Doc and Merle Watson to Ray Charles and Vassar Clements, from Tony Joe White to Billy Joe Shaver and Hargus Pig Robbins. Here remains as active as ever in today's music business. Helping mentor younger musicians on the less technical aspects of swing- those being love, life, leadership and lineage. In this episode, Barney & Jasper welcome the legendary Alan McGee into RBP's virtual cupboard. The Creation Records founder talks us through his storied career, from his school days in Glasgow to the Creation 23 label of the 21st century. Reminiscing about the early '80s Living Room gigs he put on in London, Alan describes the signings of Oasis, the Jesus and Mary Chain another great Creation acts. He also explains how Primal Scream got from Sonic Flower Groove to Screamadelica; how he almost signed Teenage Fanclub's idol Alex Chilton; how My Bloody Valentine's Loveless did (or didn't) almost bankrupt his & Dick Green's baby; and how appalled Sony were by Kevin Rowland's My Beauty album after the company acquired 49% of Creation's shares in 1992.Slightly cheekily, RBP's co-hosts then force Alan to listen to clips from a 2007 audio interview with Alex James of Oasis's Britpop nemesis Blur — except it turns out he never really hated those soft southern Sassenachs in the first place: it was all the Gallaghers' fault. Quel surprise…After paying their respects to fallen pop heroes Wayne Fontana, Trini Lopez and Seeds guitarist Jan Savage, Barney & Jasper talk through their highlights of the week's new "library load ". These include Lillian Roxon's 1966 report on "Music City USA" (i.e. Nashville); Michael Goldberg's 1983 report on MTV's exclusion of Black music videos; Joni Mitchell bellyaching in 1981 about being "written out of rock history"; a breathless 2002 review of Scandi garage rockers the Hives live at London's Astoria, and a riveting Aphex Twin interview from 2003…Pieces discussed: Creation, Creationer, Creationest, Jesus & Mary Chain, Vile Evil from East Kilbride, Primal Scream, Blur's Alex James audio, Wayne Fontana, Trini Lopez, The Seeds' Jan Savage, Death Discs, Nashville, Wizzard, Patti Smith, MTV, Joni Mitchell, Cleveland punk, Jerry Ragovoy, The Hives, Aphex Twin and Beyoncé.This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

Dave Isaacs has been called “a musician's musician”, a master player with the command and knowledge of his instrument that can only come from a lifetime of experience. In his adopted hometown of Music City USA, he has become known in the music community as the “Nashville Guitar Guru” for his work as a teacher and coach to professional performers, hit songwriters, and the next generation of Nashville's rising stars. Nashville might seem to be an unusual place to land for a classically-trained graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, whereas a student he won the Rose Augustine Award for promising young classical guitarists twice. But Dave Isaacs is about as diverse as a musician can be. After a serious repetitive strain injury derailed a classical concert career, he started writing songs. Over 12 albums and nearly 25 years, he has explored a stylistic range from literate singer-songwriter folk to foot-stomping swamp blues, soaring harmony-driven country-rock, and jazz-inflected instrumental excursions. He has rocked a muddy crowd at Woodstock and played the blues with Les Paul, and has now recently added “author” to his resume. Dave's book “The Perpetual Beginner: a musician's path to lifelong learning” is a look back at the author's formative experiences as a student and young musician, and how those lessons paved the way for a remarkably diverse musical path. Most of all, the book explores how all players get “stuck”, and how a “beginner's mind” – a return to a sense of eager possibility - leads to an understanding of music in terms of its simplest, irreducible elements. This understanding has no relationship to talent or experience, only the recognition that even complicated problems can be broken down to a collection of simple elements that can be resolved one at a time. Jim Beck was an innovator and a wizard in the recording studio. In the early-mid 1950s, Beck gave raw honky tonk talent some of their first sides - names that later went on to become some of country's legends. Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price, Marty Robbins amongst many others were in Beck's studios long before they went to Nashville - and if not for Jim Beck's untimely passing in 1956, could Dallas, Texas have become centre for all things country music? In this special edition of the show, we explore what may have been and take a deep dive into some of the finest country, western and hillbilly talent that ever was. Dancing at the Hermitage Hotel. Being at teenager at the start of World War II. Confronting Jim Crow injustices. Host Allen Forkum (editor of The Nashville Retrospect newspaper) interviews 94-year-old Mary B. Williams, who also recalls her career as a presenter in the early days of Nashville television, when commercials were performed live and occasionally made for humorous bloopers. (Segment begins at 04:40) (Special thanks to Tom Vickstrom) Mary Binkley Williams and her husband, Thurman P. Williams, are pictured at the time of her marriage in 1942 when she was 18 years old. She grew up at 1509 Russell St. in East Nashville before going with her husband to Virginia the day after their marriage. (Image: Mary B. Williams) The Hermitage Hotel, Nashville’s first million-dollar hotel, opened in 1910 and is pictured here on a vintage postcard. Mrs. Williams has fond memories of the hotel, from fraternity dances, to sorority lunches, and even her honeymoon. (Image: Mike Slate) Mrs. Williams landed a job modeling clothes for a N.Y. designer at Tinsley’s, a women’s clothing store in downtown Nashville. These advertisements appeared in the Jan. 21, 1945, Nashville Tennessean. (Image: Newspapers.com) Original caption from the Aug. 13, 1950, Nashville Tennessean: “Behind the Camera’s Eye—Shelton Weaver, WSM-TV studio engineer, makes an adjustment on one of the station’s expensive television cameras. A single tube used in the camera costs $1,300.” In the podcast, Mrs. Williams recalls her career as at presenter in live commercials at WSM-TV. (Image: Newspapers.com, photo by Robert C. Holt Jr.) Mrs. Williams today lives in the Green Hills area of Nashville. Also hear Don Cusic, Curb professor of music industry history at Belmont University, tell the story of Nashville’s first big hit record, “Near You” in 1947, and the beginnings of Music City USA. Hear Donia Dickerson recount the origins of the song, written by her father, Francis Craig, a famed Big Band leader in Nashville. (Segment begins at 46:00) (Special thanks to Beth Odle) Francis Craig and His Orchestra are picture at a performance at the Hermitage Hotel. (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room) Original caption from the Aug. 28, 1947, Nashville Banner: “Francis Craig, Nashville orchestra leader, is shown with the first record of ‘Near You,’ the song written and recorded by him and which is now the most popular choice on the juke boxes of America. Craig has broken an all-time record by being the first Southern man to write, play, and record a song in the South and see it make the Hit Parade.” The record would go on to sell millions of copies and start Nashville on the road to being a recording center. (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room) This sheet music for Francis Craig’s “Near You” is part of his collection of papers at the Nashville Public Library, which was donated by his daughter, Donia Craig Dickerson. And finally, Allen Forkum reviews some of the contents of the March 2019 issue, including Vanderbilt University first women’s basketball team in 1897, the death of Daniel Boone in 1809, and an obscenity case against homosexual movies in 1979. (Notice: The mentioned Clover Bottom Massacre should have been 1780, not 1870.) THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Today on The Troubadour I visit with Hays, KS native and K-State alum, turned Nashville transplant, Blake Chaffin. Soon after graduating college Blake made the journey to Music City USA and started piecing together what has today become not only a admirable career as a songwriter, but also a successful career as an entrepreneur with a business he built from the ground up. As a songwriter, Blake gutted it out in Nashville while honing his craft leading him to eventually secure a multi year publishing. He has went on to write with established and well known songwriters like Mark D. Sanders and Robert Earl Keen, as well as successful artists like Brantley Gilbert, Dustin Lynch and Logan Mize. Blake can easily be described as a prolific songwriter, penning over 120 new songs in 2017 alone. In this interview Blake exhibits just how important developing relationships with other people in the industry is and can be. Blake’s work ethic and approach to the craft of songwriting is something to be respected and should serve as an example for aspiring writers looking to succeed in a sea of competition. www.thetroubadourpodcast.com www.facebook.com/thetroubadourpodcast www.instagram.com/thetroubadourpodcast/ twitter: @thetroubadourP1

On today’s show I get to share with all of you my great experience at Nashville’s very first Distributed Health Blockchain conference that was held on Monday October 3rd in the heart of downtown Music City USA. In addition to some amazing panel discussions and presentations by some brilliant women and men, I was also able to slip away from time to time to get some face to face interviews with some of the attendees. In this episode I include some of those interviews. But for the real meat of this conference, check out BTC Media which includes Bitcoin Magazine, yBitcoin and The Distributed Ledger. My hope is that Blockchains might also address challenges in the area of provider data management to support a new level of interoperability between payers and to ensure that updates to provider information are widely distributed in real-time. With nearly 100 people moving to Nashville every day, it has become one of the hot hipster cities in America. Why is this? What does this mean? Does this mean that I should move there too? On a recent weekend trip to Music City USA, I raised this question repeatedly and I got a variety of answers. Uber drivers, bartenders, music managers and restaurant patrons answer the question: should I move to Nashville. www.third-story.com
Photo by Thom Bresh Were y'all starting to think we were dead and gone? Us too (No, not really). Yes, yet another inexcusably long delay in getting this episode out. Life happens, donchaknow? I'd like to make a grand pronouncement about more prompt and regular postings in the future... but I'd hate to paint myself a liar.So how's the new site looking? Pretty slick, eh? And how's about our new "official" correspondents? Yeah, you haven't had a chance to hear from them in their new "official" capacities yet; but rest assured you will soon.Onward to EP 46...This time around we're offering up a real treat and a truly inspirational one at that. We interviewed Nashville favorite ROBERT K WOLF; a veritable "songwriter's songwriter" universally known and respected amongst those "in the know" here in MUSIC CITY USA. His is one heck of a tale; a story of a "classically trained" musician-turned-songwriter(!) and spanning two coasts! I'd delve into further detail here... but wouldn't you rather hear the story directly from the man himself? As well as being a brilliant musician and songwriter, Robert is also an amazingly positive and upbeat individual; exactly the kind of interviewee we need to hear from in these trying and often frustrating days. I'm proud to call him my friend and to have written with him (and will no doubt do again in the near future). But enough of me yakking... on with THE SHOW! Ana Margarita Fernandez , born April 28th, 1971 and raised in Miami, Florida a "Cuga", that is, a Cuban Gringa. I am one of 4 girls, a minute older then my identical twin, Betty. We are considered the babies of the family. Our older sisters are Christina and Lisa. Our father, Dr. Joaquin Mario Fernandez, fled Cuba and came to the United States in the 1950's. He was a prominent thoracic and vascular surgeon well known for his zest for life and his compassion for the sick. During surgery he met and fell madly in love with my mother they married had 4 children and then he died at the young age of 42. My twin and I were 5 and the oldest sister was 8. Our Mother, Peggy Lucile was born in Abington, VA, a very small town hidden in the Appalachian mountains, located on the Tennessee/Virginia state lines. An Air Force Veteran, race car driver, operating / trauma unit head nurse, and my hero. Growing up, during the school year Miami was our home and Mountain City, TN, was our home for the summer months, for that was where my mother's kin lived and where we spent every summer until I turned 18. It is there, amongst the Appalachian mountains, forests, gardens, barns, trailers, tobacco fields, pig shacks and the public pool where we were taught how to work hard, be disciplined, proud, gracious, humble, and thankful. It is in those pig shacks and fairy woods where we learned to party hearty - grassroots style witnessing moonshine makers and drinkers play their banjos and fiddles. We provided the twist with our Cuban heritage and readiness to party. It was there as well where I realized the soul of the south is incredibly similar to the soul of the Cuban culture. Being the free spirit that I am, I married and moved to Barranquilla, Colombia from the age of 18 to 23. There I was blessed with my son, Christian, born in 1992 and an extended family that to this day neither an ocean can divide nor a divorce sever. I left Colombia handicapped by the need to be with my sister Betty, a quality only a twin can understand, and moved to Nashville to be among my mother and sisters. I dabbled in music, radio, television and theater work, which led me to learn that I am very entrepreneurial, minded. Then, 2002 brought my biggest life changing moment - the birth of my daughter, Gabriella Antonia Fernandez Ginther aka Gigi In 2004, I launched my business in the glass and glazing construction industry, changing city scapes across the country. Today, IWS is certified locally and nationally as a Woman/Minority Business Enterprise and continues to be integral in the building of sustainable architectural projects of huge scale and importance all over the US including, Miami Intermodal, Las Vegas City Hall, Nemours's Children's Hospital and Hunter Bridge to name a few. I think my biggest accomplishment is the gift of life. My own life, in which I've chosen to live balls to the wall and seize the moment with no regrets! My mistakes have become my badges of honor for the lessons they've taught me making my life perpetually ready to soar. The lives of the children I've given this world. Two beautiful human beings, that are so much better than I am that sometimes I have to wonder how they came from me. (But like I always say, one must always make a good breeding decision.) Finally, the gift of saving a life. When faced with the tragic shooting of a loved one, I stepped forward, risking my own life, and was able to save his. That experience of saving the life of a relative, brother, son, husband, father and a friend was one of my greatest accomplishments.Words that best describe me:-The key to my personality is freedom.-I love to dance, hike, hula-hoop, ride my scooter, race and compete-I love travel, adventure, variety and meeting new people.-I'm curious and long to experience all of life.-I love to be involved in several things at the same time as long as I'm not tied down to any one thing.-I like change, new things and new horizons.-I make friends easily, my personality is upbeat, attracting people from all walks of life I do not know a stranger-I have a way of words and an uncanny ability to motivate others.-I lack a mouth filter, discipline, order and can also be impulsive, doing orexpressing things I regret later.-I am love to taste all of life.-Music, art, food and other sensory experiences are essential to the enjoyment of my life.-I find it difficult to commit to one relationship, but once committed I can be as faithful as an old dog.-I am multi-talented and possess a variety of diverse abilities.-I was perceived as a wild child by adults and a source of concern by my family. Always guilty until I proved myself innocent-I'm a late-bloomer and need to experience all of life before I can truly know and commit to my heart's desire.-Change is constant in my world requiring adaptability and courage I yearn for freedom, love and self-improvement.Why Nashville?? Nashville became my home when my family moved here in 1995. It was inevitable as the old saying goes, home is where the heart is and my heart is with my mom and sisters! What keeps me in Nashville has now become the reason why I would never leave. Nashville; the Athens of the South, Music City USA, home of the Moon Pie, Goo Goo Cluster, Soul Food, Sweet Tea. Nashville is an incubator for the student, dreamer, creative, athletic, innovator, storyteller, entrepreneur and a cradle to the modern day renaissance man and woman. There's nowhere in the world quite like Nashville, wars have been fought here and blood has been shed here. We are a city of inclusion that desegregated our downtown in 1962, two years before the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The mixture of classic and modern architecture in Nashville's landscape along with its southern backdrop and front porch culture is the perfect metaphor for the variety of people living here and is what gives our fine city its soul!http://thechristopprogram.com/

Nashville is obviously best know for country music, but part of what makes us Music City USA is the diversity of music you can find here. Karissa's music is not country, but more edgy or alternative. She came to Nashville from Wyoming, meeting a founding member of the 70's super group Bread Robb Royer here, who helped give her the extra boost she need to pursue a career in music. Take a listen and you will see that Karissa definetinely has an incredible voice.
