Nashville-based pop purveyor Jessie Baylin has shared the stage with artists like Stevie Nicks, The Shins, and Iron & Wine (to name just a few). “Wild Life” was co-written with Daniel Tashian, a two-time Grammy-winning songwriter and producer who has worked with Kasey Musgraves and Burt Bacharach. This track has all the glitter of classic orchestral pop, and evokes a timeless Laurel Canyon sound.
No new artist chat this week, but we've dipped back into the archives to find one of our favourite interviews to revisit. In 2022, we caught up with producer and DJ Dillon Francis ahead of his Splendour in the Grass set. We cover the perils of high-altitude paint balling, travel conundrums at local NZ airports, and who listeners should have seen at that year's festival (immediately before Max got the worst bout of 'VID).Discover more new music and hear your favourite artists with 78 Amped on Instagram and TikTok.
Classic female country artists like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Faith Hill, along with modern-day musicians like Kasey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, and Shania Twain are pioneers of the genre. Despite their influence and hand in elevating country music to the heights it's reached in the modern era, only 10% of country music airplay and awards are granted to women. This is one of the astonishing facts in Tami Neilson's latest show ‘The F Word', which combines music with the research of musicology professor Dr Jada Watson. The two first met on Twitter, both very vocal about challenging inequality in the country music industry. “I followed her because she wrote, you know, these incredible articles," Neilson told Francesca Rudkin. “What I loved about her work was that for an artist, she was kind of giving us the tools to feel validated I guess, you know, vindicated.” Neilson says she wanted to tell the story of women in country music through song, backing it with the black and white statistics of Watson's research. Despite country being one of the largest genres of music in the United States, women are disproportionally represented, an issue Watson says has historic roots. “We have to remember where country came from and the time in which it was developed, and this was 1920's United States, racially segregated country.” “Most cultural institutions were racially segregated and then sort of built into that framework was also different forms of discrimination or oppression,” she said. One of the stories they tell in ‘The F Word' is that of the Carter Family – one of the founding families of the country music genre. Watson says that in the recording sessions including people like Jimmie Rodgers, the Carters said that a woman in the lead would never sell. “We think of them as the founding family of country music,” Watson told Rudkin. “And so that idea of women not selling, or not being possible to sell has really been baked into the fabric of the institution that is country music.” The ‘F Word' will be performed on Saturday, March 8th at Auckland Town Hall. Trading traditional, flat countryside pastures for impeccable mountainscapes, dry desert richness, and gleaming strip lights, Siena is a neon cowgirl from none other than Las Vegas. Siena's rodeo stage is set, having already shared it with Rascal Flatts, Big & Rich, and Rodney Atkins, to name a few. These artists also are her influences along with modern country music icons like Carrie Underwood and Kasey Musgraves. Unlike most artists her age, she moves away from modern country-pop and dives more into her roots of 2000s country, in both her music and fashion. With a bolo tie resting confidently around her neck and a wide-brim hat shading her eyes, Siena is an artist the twenty-first century has yet to see. To her, being an artist means spreading positivity and encouragement like the west coast sunshine. In this conversation, we discuss her work with Don Miggs, her journey to becoming a country artist, and why it's important to remain authentic.Stay Connected with SienaInstagram.com/sienamusic •tiktok.com/@sienapaglia •facebook.com/sienapaglia •www.sienapaglia.com/———
This week's guest is NNAMDÏ. The Chicago-based singer, rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist has put out a ton of great music since 2020 (including his acclaimed new Sooper Records / Secretly Canadian album, Please Have a Seat). He's performed with Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, Black Midi, Jeff Rosenstock and Speedy Ortiz. He has garnered acclaim from Kasey Musgraves and he was named "Chicagoan of the Year" by the Chicago Tribune. Before he was an accomplished artist on the cusp of even bigger and better things, NNAMDÏ was living in the Chicago suburb of Lansing, drumming in rock bands and teaching himself to record by writing songs about butts for his friends. Recently, just prior to the release of Please Have a Seat and the upcoming U.S. tour (including an Oct. 20 show at Cactus Club), NNAMDÏ spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about making the new album, getting back on the road again, as well as some of the hopes and plans he has for the near future. Along the way, he also talked about playing drums in his middle school's jazz band, starting a group called The Para-Medics, playing basement shows and comic book shops in high school, dabbling in self-recording and rapping, and how lighthearted material about booties and inside jokes inadvertently paved the way to a successful solo career. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering, Lakefront Brewery and Music Go Round Greenfield. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and NNAMDÏ ("Grounded").

Thank you for tuning in to the 76th episode of the Wedding Songs Podcast. I am Matt Campbell, and today I'm gonna be giving you my hot 50 wedding song picks that you could play for your wedding ceremony or your reception. These songs are selected from the popular downloads and songs that are streamed on the internet. If you prefer to read the list, or listen to the list you can do so on our website, MyWeddingSongs.com. Just go to charts on the main menu, and then Hot 50 Wedding Songs. And while you're there, make sure you sign up for our monthly newsletter that goes out on the last day of the month. The newsletter features all of the new songs released the prior month, and it's great song ideas for your wedding day and also for date night. So let's go ahead and get started. I'm gonna give you these lists in alphabetical order by the song title, starting off with song number one, "A Little Bit of Love" by Weezer, released in March of 2022. This is a great song for alternative rock fans, that really is a mid-tempo song that you could have as a background song during your reception. Next up is "abcdefu" by GAYLE, released in August of 2021. Now, of course, this is not gonna be a song that you're gonna play at every single wedding. If you have a group that loves this type of music, that loves a great sing-along song, then towards the end of the night this is a great song that you could play for all of your family and friends to sing along to. Number three is "About Damn Time" by Lizzo, released in April of 2022. This is a great R&B hip-hop song that you could play just to get all of the ladies out on the dance floor singing along. Number four is "All 4 Nothing (I'm So in Love)" by Lauv, released in April of 2022. A great song that you could play as a background song during dinner or during cocktail hour. It's a mid-tempo song that I think would really fit into pop music lovers' playlist. Number five is another pop song, "As It Was" by Harry styles, released in March of 2022. Another great background song to play. At number six is "Bad Habits" by Ed Sheeran, released in June of 2021. This is a song that you could play as a background song, or even if you have a great remix to it, it could also go as a great dance tune as well. Speaking of Ed Sheeran, he's also at number seven with Camina Cabella, "Bam Bam", released in March of 2022. I think this is a great background song. It goes really well with the pop fans and also for the Latin fans as well. At number eight is a great party song that you could play during the dancing part of your reception. That is "Big Energy (remix)" by lotto, Mariah Carey, and DJ Khaled released in March of 2022. Number nine is "Break My Soul" by Beyonce. This song is for the people that are really keeping up with the new music and love Beyonce. So this is a song that you could add to your rotation for the dancing part. At number 10 is a great country song that you could have as a parent-child dance song. So, as father-daughter, or mother-son. It's "Buy Dirt", but it's the acoustic version by Jordan Davis and Luke Bryan, released in October of 2021. You could even have this as a money dance song as well. At number 11 is a new song released from the Elvis movie "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Kasey Musgraves. A lot of people have done a cover of this song.

We follow up our year end Holiday recommendations on Amazon Prime with a Round Table discussion on three mediocre Christmas movies. Can a Hallmark/Freeform movie be elevated? No. Can Keenan host a better Christmas variety special? Maybe. Are most movies with Joel Mchale better if they star Jason Sudekis? Yes. After answering these questions, as only we can, we leave the meth hive known as Amazon for everyone's favorite former premium cable provider, HBOMAX. The bad news is everything in this stream may be gold. The good news is you've never heard our opinions on these classics and blockbuster icons. He's born-and-raised Southern. He's proudly queer. He's unabashedly pop. But Fancy Hagood is about to show the world that he's much, much more. Finding chart-topping success at an early age through collaborations with Ariana Grande and Dr. Luke, Fancy decided to walk away from an industry dictated by fearful executives that wanted to pigeonhole him and his music. Six years later he has emerged with his debut album, "Southern Curiosity", an amazing collection of songs that uses his unique musical voice to tell his story as a queer man. Join Nick as he shares Fancy's inspiring journey, a journey that took him from the suburbs of Arkansas to the beginnings of what promises to be an incredible musical career. HIGHLIGHTS: [02:14] At 17, Fancy left the conservative environs of Arkansas for the musical mecca of Nashville [04:32] While in LA Fancy worked with big-time producer Dr. Luke and manager Scooter Braun [05:11] Fancy was stunned to discover that being gay didn't fit into the "Hollywood star" model, so in order to stay true to himself and his music, he left the industry [06:53] Luckily, Fancy's record label and management let him out of his record deals so he could pursue his own path [08:01] Fancy took some time to figure out who he was and what he wanted before beginning to write his debut album "Southern Curiosity" [09:20] Fancy has fought and sacrificed to tell his story the way he wanted to tell it through his music [09:47] Fancy collaborated with musicians and producers in Nashville and London, people who understood his desire to tell his queer story bravely and truthfully [12:05] A couple of songs on "Southern Curiosity" are credited to Fancy's old stage name Who Is Fancy, but all the new songs are credited to him [13:12] The song "Mr. Atlanta" was co-written in London, where the conversation about being queer was much more open and accepted [14:16] Fancy did a little bit of touring back in 2015 with Ariana Grande, but he's dying to get on stage solo and perform his new music [15:46] Fancy's music didn't fit into any of the Hollywood marketing niches, so he left the industry to make his own "queer Southern pop" [19:20] Fancy no longer lets marketing groups decide his career, he's proudly out and eager to share his queer story with the world [21:28] The external pressures put on Fancy in LA created in him a self-defeating attitude, until he removed himself from the environment and learned to appreciate himself as he is [23:37] Surprisingly, some of the harshest criticism Fancy has received both personally and professionally was from other gay men [24:07] To Fancy, being gay doesn't mean that he's competing with other gay performers and artists, there's room for everyone at the table [26:17] Coming out at a young age taught Fancy that nothing in life is black and white [27:21] Self-taught on piano and guitar, Fancy wrote most of "Southern Curiosity" on piano [28:55] Fancy looks up to icons like Elton John and Adele, and genre-bending artists like Kasey Musgraves [30:52] In an attempt to reinvigorate his career, Fancy's publishing company Downtown Music Publishing sent him to London to help him find his artistic voice Thanks for listening! It's been a massive year for the Take 5. Since 2006 I've been having conversations that go well beyond music, but in the last couple of years I feel as though these co-hosts have gone deeper than ever. In 2019 alone, I had so many pinch myself moments, so I wanted to share them with you here in a frankensteined best of: a Take 10 to cap off a big year. Over the next little while you'll hear why this segment is so special. And if this is your first time listening, it's a great smorgasboard to feast on.
