Brian MacDonald is the former executive director of Aman Lara, an organization of volunteers and veterans that perform 'extractions' from Afghanistan. That began in 2021, following the collapse of the Afghan government and the return to power of the Taliban. So at first, the organization's main focus was helping Afghans escape their country. This work expanded in 2022, to helping people get out of Ukraine. Two years ago, Brian stepped away from his role at Aman Lara, to start an organization called Utimus. It has a large focus on getting newcomers to Canada the qualifications they might need to join the workforce here. Utimus is based mostly in Ontario, but the CEO and founder, Brian, is located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Here's his conversation with host, Jeff Douglas.

This week we get former PC Cabinet Minister Dominic Cardy on the show to have a conversation about New Brunswick Politics. It's been a long time coming to be sure. We speak on a range of topics from the plight of democracy, the Canadian Future Party, and the New Brunswick political landscape. Wikipedia Bio Dominic William Cardy[1] MLA (born 25 July 1970) is a Canadian politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. From the 2018 New Brunswick general election until his expulsion from the caucus in October 2022,[2] Cardy represented the electoral district of Fredericton West-Hanwell for the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick. He now sits as an independent.[3] During his time in government he was the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development under Blaine Higgs. Since September 2023, Cardy has been the interim leader of the Canadian Future Party, a moderate centrist federal political party which broke away from the Conservative Party of Canada.[4] Prior to being elected to the New Brunswick legislature, Cardy served as chief of staff of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick caucus and had previously been leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party from 2011 to 2017. Early life [edit] Born in the United Kingdom, Cardy moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick with his family when he was a child.[5] He attended Dalhousie University and graduated with a political science degree.[5] Cardy worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2000 on projects to increase public support for the banning of land mines[5] and for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) between 2001 and 2008. He served as a senior staff member and then country director for NDI in Nepal, Bangladesh and Cambodia.[6] Political career [edit] While a student at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Cardy was elected President of the Nova Scotia NDP's youth wing. He then worked as a party campaigner, political assistant to an NDP MP in Cape Breton, and managed several campaigns at the municipal and federal level.[5] In 2000, Cardy co-founded NDProgress, a pressure group within the NDP that advocated the modernisation of the party's governance structures and was sympathetic to the Third Way.[3] In writing about the debate within the NDP prior to its 2001 convention between the New Politics Initiative and those such as NDProgress, Cardy wrote "Some want to see the NDP recreated as a mass party based on the ideas of the traditional left, but infused with the energy of the new social movements and the anti-globalization activists. And there are those pushing from another direction, taking inspiration from the European socialists. If I had my choice I would fall firmly into this camp, those who want the party to follow the path laid by social democrats like Gary Doer, Tony Blair and Gerhard Schröder."[7] He is also an admirer of US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.[8][self-published source] Cardy was campaign director for the NDP in the 2010 provincial election.[9] Provincial politics [edit] NDP leader [edit] Cardy was acclaimed party leader on 2 March 2011 after the only other candidate for the position, Pierre Cyr, was disqualified from the party's 2011 leadership election.[9] At the 2012 New Brunswick New Democratic Party convention, Cardy received an 82 per cent vote of confidence in his leadership from the assembled delegates.[10] During the 2012 federal NDP leadership race, Cardy backed Thomas Mulcair, and was one of the introductory speakers at his campaign launch. Cardy was the NDP's candidate in a 25 June 2012 provincial by-election in Rothesay, coming in third with 27 per cent of the vote. As leader, Cardy recruited a slate of candidates that included several prominent former Conservative and Liberal politicians including former Liberal cabinet minister Kelly Lamrock in Fredericton South; Bev Harrison, a former Conservative and Speaker of the legislature, in Hampton; former Liberal MLA Abel LeBlanc in Saint John-Lancaster and former Liberal candidate John Wilcox in Rothesay.[11] Former party leader Allison Brewer endorsed the Greens due to the policy positions of Cardy's NDP.[12] In the 2014 provincial election, Cardy ran as the party's candidate in Fredericton West-Hanwell.[12] Though it received 12.98 per cent of the vote in the 2014 provincial election, an all-time high for the NB NDP and its predecessor, the CCF, the party won no seats in the provincial legislature. Cardy himself lost to Brian Macdonald in Fredericton-Hanwell, and announced in his concession speech that he would resign as party leader effective at the party's next convention,[12] which has been postponed to January 2015. Cardy faced pressure to rescind his resignation and run in the Saint John East by-election which was called following the surprise resignation of newly elected Liberal MLA Gary Keating on 14 October 2014.[13] Cardy announced on 21 October that he would be standing in the by-election, scheduled for 17 November,[14] and delayed his resignation.[15] Cardy placed third in the by-election with 21.88 per cent of the vote.[16] Cardy agreed to remain as leader after the party's executive rejected his resignation on 10 December 2014 and a letter was signed at the party's provincial council by supporters and former candidates urging him to stay on. The party also offered Cardy a "livable" salary beginning in 2015 due to its improved financial position. Cardy had been working as leader on a volunteer basis since assuming the position in 2011 and had no legislative salary as he was not a member of the provincial legislature.[17] In early 2015, federal NDP MP Yvon Godin (Acadie—Bathurst) criticised Cardy's leadership and its conduct in the election campaign saying that Cardy had moved the provincial party too far to the centre. "The problem, I think, with the provincial party, with Dominic, was that I think he was too much to the right to even be in the centre, and I think people read into that," said Godin who added: "I think it did hurt the party. People were looking for the NDP, they were doing really well, and [voters] wanted change from the existing parties that we have now, who are serving the big corporations and forgetting about the people. I think that's what happened."[18] In the summer of 2016, Cardy expressed his support for the proposed Energy East pipeline and supported Alberta NDP Premier Rachel Notley's position against the Leap Manifesto.[19] He had earlier refused to endorse federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair's leadership, saying he was troubled by positions taking by the federal party during the 2015 federal election, and skipped the April 2016 federal party convention along with the leadership review that occurred during the meeting.[20] Resignation from the NDP [edit] Cardy resigned as party leader, as well as resigning his membership of both the federal and New Brunswick NDP,[21] on 1 January 2017, complaining of party infighting which he attributed to "destructive forces" colluding with CUPE New Brunswick, the province's largest public-sector union against his leadership.[22] Cardy said that he "cannot lead a party where a tiny minority of well-connected members refuse to accept the democratic will of the membership." He added that "[l]imited time and energy is being wasted on infighting before the election," and that "'Some New Democrats unfortunately believe change and openness have had their time. They want to return to an old NDP of true believers, ideological litmus tests and moral victories."[23] Cardy claimed that what he described as his "progressive" platform had been thwarted by both federal and provincial party members and denounced the federal party's non-interventionist stance on the Syrian Civil War as antithetical to his beliefs.[22] Conservative politics [edit] Cardy's appointment as strategic issues director for the opposition Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick was announced by party leader Blaine Higgs on 27 January 2017.[24] Cardy said it is "not my intention" to run for a legislative seat as a Progressive Conservative candidate but that a "great many" of his former colleagues in the NDP would be joining the Progressive Conservatives.[24] In April 2017, Cardy was promoted to the position of chief of staff to the official opposition New Brunswick Progressive Conservative caucus. Later that month he endorsed Maxime Bernier for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada.[25] Cardy was elected in the 2018 provincial election as the PC candidate in Fredericton West-Hanwell. He had run unsuccessfully in 2014 in the same riding as a New Democrat.[26] Cardy was re-elected in the 2020 provincial election. Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development [edit] This section needs expansion with: information about the 2021 CUPE strike. You can help by adding to it. (October 2021) Cardy was appointed as Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development on 9 November 2018.[27] During his time as department minister, Cardy signed the original version of Policy 713, which took into effect on August 17, 2020.[28] Removal of Chinese cultural programs from New Brunswick schools [edit] Minister Cardy spearheaded a plan to remove the Confucius Institute from all New Brunswick schools.[29] While the educational programs for elementary and middle schools were removed for the 2019–2020 school year, high school programs will not be removed until 2022.[29] Resignation [edit] Cardy resigned from his position as Minister of Education and Early Childhood Education on October 13, 2022.[30] Announcing his resignation on Twitter, Cardy explained that "At some point, working style and values have to matter." His resignation letter offered a more detailed explanation,[31] citing Premier Higgs' behaviour in a series of incidents. Cardy initially commitment to staying on as a Progressive Conservative but was expelled from caucus a day after resigning as minister.[32][2][3] He was replaced as minister by Bill Hogan.[33] Independent MLA [edit] Cardy remained in the legislature as an independent MLA for the rest of his term, while announcing he would not be running as a candidate in the 2024 New Brunswick general election.[4] Cardy said he would be voting for Susan Holt and the New Brunswick Liberal Party in the upcoming election in June 2024.[34] Federal politics and further activities (2023–present) [edit] On September 20, 2023, Cardy announced that he was in the process of founding a new federal political party, tentatively named the "Canadian Future Party" to occupy the middle ground between the Justin Trudeau-led Liberal Party of Canada and the Pierre Poilievre-led Conservative Party of Canada. Prior to its launch as a party, the group had been known first as "Centre Ice Conservatives" and then as "Centre Ice Canadians."[35][4] On July 22, 2024, Elections Canada recognized the Canadian Future Party as eligible for registration, pending it standing a candidate for election.[36][37] In July 2024, Cardy was arrested in Toronto for disturbing the peace after engaging in a confrontation at a pro-Palestine protest. According to Cardy, he chanted "Free Palestine from Hamas". Authorities stated that Cardy "behaved in a confrontational manner towards other protesters and did not follow police directions" to leave the area. He was released without charges.[38][39]

The soul-baring new single is from their forthcoming album, The Process, which will be released on May 10 via Cletus the Van / Downtown Artist & Label Services.Judah says, “Anger was something I wasn't allowed to feel growing up. The notion that everything had to be “okay” and not be justifiably angry only hurt me and my chronic back pain. When people who hurt you don't take your pain seriously. That fucking sucks. I won't let that happen again.” The Process, their fifth studio album, was inspired by singer Judah's personal life and struggles. Both he and Brian are sons of therapists, so groundbreaking psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' five stages of grief came to mind – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance – as they began work on the album. Interludes set the tone for song suites dedicated to each of the five stages. Leading up to release of “Floating in the Night,” Judah & the Lion teased the single and shared about the role anger plays in the healing process in a series of short videos. Influencer jordanbyrness amplified the message with her “YALL. AREN'T. HEARING. HIM.” post.Judah & the Lion will be performing some of the new songs on tour this spring. The extensive North American run will kick off on April 25 at PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, NC and include shows at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre (May 19) and The Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC (May 31).The Process is buoyant, impassioned and emotionally connective. The band has a reinvigorated sense of purpose with its aim to create music that resonates deeply, believing in music's power to connect people and make them feel less alone in life's journey. The band began releasing songs from The Process last year. The new material has racked up nearly 10 million combined global streams to date and earned spots on numerous playlists across all DSPs, including Spotify's New Music Friday, Apple Music's New Music Daily and Amazon Music's Alternative Hits, with additional support from SiriusXM Alt Nation's “Advanced Placement,” Pandora, YouTube, SoundCloud, Tidal, Audiomack and Deezer.Since their 2012 debut EP, Judah & the Lion have earned widespread acclaim for their genre-bending music, received Platinum/Gold certifications, amassed over one billion career streams and sold over 500 million tickets. Six of their hit singles have gone Top 15 on Alternative radio and the band won an iHeart Music Award for Best New Alt Rock Band of 2018. The Process is the follow-up to 2022's Revival, which Atwood Magazine praised as an “electric embrace of what it means to be alive: Soaring through limitless euphoric highs, dwelling in gut-wrenching lows, and soaking up all the feeling in between.”We want to hear from you! Libby Znaimer is joined by Guidy Mamann, a partner at Mamann, Sandaluk & kingwell LPP Immigration lawyers, Daniel Lee, an Immigration lawyer with Fasken Law and Demyan Hyworon who is trying to bring his family over from Ukraine and wants Ottawa to speed up the process. In response to the growing refugee crisis in Ukraine--the largest displacement of peoples in Europe since WW2--Canada has set up two special programs to help bring some Ukrainians here either on a temporary or permanent basis. And, on top of that, the government will provide eligibility for Ukrainians coming in to apply for open work permits so that Canadian companies can hire them faster. But, is it all easier said than done? And, what kind of challenges will Ukrainian nationals have to face as they navigate our immigration system? Meanwhile, Demyan, whose mother came to Canada as a refugee from Ukraine in 1949, is planning on bringing his own family members from there to Canada as well as other Ukrainian nationals. He says Ottawa needs to speed up the process. ---- THE EFFORT TO BRING UKRAINIAN KIDS TO CANADA FOR HOSPITAL TREATMENT Libby Znaimer is joined by Brian MacDonald, executive director of Aman Lara, a Canadian organization working to bring sick Ukrainian children to Canadian hospitals. Brian details how his organization is helping to bring Ukrainian cancer patients to Sick Kids hospital for treatment. ---- PFIZER SEEKS APPROVAL FROM FDA FOR SECOND BOOSTER FOR ADULTS 65 AND OLDER

There were three important happenings today relating to the Mass Casualty Commission. Two of the three took place within the Commission proceedings, while the third occurred across the harbour in the Dartmouth Provincial Court. In Dartmouth this morning, Crown Prosecutors advised the Court that they were referring Lisa Banfield's criminal charges to restorative justice. She had been scheduled to go to trial later this month on charges of supplying ammunition to her spouse, Gabriel Wortman. That trial will now not take place. In the Commission proceedings itself, the day started off with a presentation from Commission Counsel, Roger Burrill, addressing the Commission's findings on the perpetrator's movements overnight, when he left Portapique and drove to Debert. Video surveillance from businesses along the route show that Wortman drove north into Debert, took a right down Ventura Boulevard, then drove into the Debert Business Park. It was there where he parked behind Brian MacDonald's welding shop for nearly six hours. The next video evidence is of him driving west on Ventura Boulevard at 5:42 AM. The final matter of significance the proceedings today was a decision by the Commissioners with respect to witnesses who will be called to testify. To their credit, the Commissioners not only returned with a decision in a timely fashion, giving it now, rather than when the proceedings come back on at the end of March, and they also approved nearly every witness that was requested by the parties. That means that Lisa Banfield, the first responding officers, all of the involved Staff Sergeants and other supervisors, as well as the commanding officers for the Province and the head of the RCMP. This was the first clear indication from the Commissioners of what ‘trauma-informed' means in the context of this inquiry. There will be witnesses, and they will be subjected to cross examination. This is a key moment not only for the families, but also for the public confidence in the MCC. The first witnesses will be called on March 28th, and they will be the three officers who were the first ones in Portapique after the initial 911 calls. Cst. Stuart Beselt, Cst. Adam Merchant, and Cst. Aaron Patton will testify together as a panel, and there will be other witnesses that week. The supervisors are expected to testify in late May, when the MCC takes a closer look at the command decisions that were made during the mass casualty.

On this episode, you’ll find out how VM went from free/open source advocate and corporate strategist to pragmatic author, and you’ll discover what it takes to write a book. --- VM (Vicky) Brasseur spent most of her twenty-plus years in the tech industry leading software development departments and teams, providing technical management and leadership consulting for small and medium businesses, and helping companies understand, use, release, and contribute to free and open source software in a way that’s good for both their bottom line and for the community. After discovering Project Gutenberg—a free eBook platform for public domain content—VM was hooked on the free/open source model as a way to share documentation, software, and knowledge. Although VM had been writing articles and contributing to free/open source projects before becoming an author, making the leap from article writer to book author was intimidating—and not necessarily something she considered on her own. But thanks to her editor, Brian MacDonald, VM was convinced to write Forge Your Future with Open Source, the first and only book to detail how to contribute to free and open source software projects. We had the pleasure of interviewing PVRIS over Zoom video! Growing up in Lowell, MA, frontwoman Lynn Gunn taught herself drums, guitar, and bass by sneaking into her brother’s bedroom in grade school and playing for hours on end. During computer lab at school, she discovered production and recording software, tuning out the day’s lessons in order to tinker with her very first beats. This process carried over to PVRIS, which she officially formed in 2013 joined by band mates Alex Babinski [guitar, keys] and Brian MacDonald [bass, keyboards]. A year later, White Noise inspired a growing fan base and scored a silver certification in the UK. Meanwhile, 2017’s All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell bowed in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top Alternative Albums Chart and ushered their stream tally past 220 million by 2020. Over the next seven years, they performed everywhere from Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Reading & Leads to Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! in addition to supporting Muse, Fall Out Boy, and 30 Seconds To Mars in arenas and selling out headline dates worldwide. At the same time, Vice, The New York Times, Medium, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Playboy, and more extended praise. Advocating for the LGBTQ community, she supported organizations such as The Ally Coalition.Personal strength materializes at just the right time. Ultimately, life’s circumstances and challenges prompt perseverance. Internal power fully and outwardly awakens for PVRIS frontwoman, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Lynn Gunn on her third full-length album and 2020 debut for Warner Records, Use Me. She channels the ups and downs of an unbelievable two-year journey into pop conjurations of glitchy beat-craft, airy guitars, and spell-binding vocals. In doing so, she steps into a new chapter earmarked by focus, fire, and fearlessness manifested loud and clear.“I’ve tapped into parts of myself I had shrunk for so long,” she confesses. “They’re the parts I was afraid to show and things I was scared to admit. External circumstances weighed me down, and I didn’t allow myself to speak up in my relationships. I was fucking tired, but I didn’t want to be trapped anymore. I was always strong and in the power seat, but I had to own it externally. I made a decision not to shrink myself again and to truly be seen for the first time in my art. I was finally able to take ownership for the things I’ve done and continue to do as PVRIS. It was a new era for me.”A lifetime devoted to music set the stage for this realization. Growing up in Lowell, MA, Lynn taught herself drums, guitar, and bass by sneaking into her brother’s bedroom in grade school and playing for hours on end. Eventually, they started jamming covers together, but she had already developed quite a bit of proficiency on her own. At the same time, Vice, The New York Times, Medium, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and more extended praise. Advocating for the LGBTQ community, she supported organizations such as The Ally Coalition. As Lynn embarked on her next musical chapter, life presented a series of trials and tribulations.Experiencingvocal problems, stage fright, andsevere pain in her back, ribs, and joints, getting on stage required all of the strength she could muster throughout 2017-2018. She even almost had to cancel the biggest tour of PVRIS’s career, but soldiered on. After visits to urgent care facilities and ENTsin various states on the road and numerous doctors, a rheumatologist diagnosed her with Ankylosing Spondylitis—an autoimmune disease. Her health only deteriorated further though. A year later, she found out she also suffered from another autoimmune affliction: Crohn’s Disease. Facing health and vocal problems, battling through choppy industry waters, reconfiguring her professional support system, and the dissolution of a long-term relationship, she transferred the pain and power into the next chapter of PVRIS on Use Me.“The title encapsulates the entire experience,” she elaborates. “I was exhausted, and I felt like shit all of the time. My whole life flipped upside down in so many areas. For so long, I’d opened myself up to being used and always had trouble setting boundaries in all areas of life. I knew I was strong; I just didn’t show it like I should. When my health problems worsened, I really had to. It’s always beena battle to figure out how much is too much for me, but I always push through. It made me actualize my strength, resiliency, and toughness. I turned the hardships into lessons. It was about taking action.”In tandem with this realization, she made a very personal and important decision. For years, she remained in the background too shy to take all of the credit for the vision of PVRIS and her role as its sole architect for the songwriting, presentation, much of the production, merch, and visual video concepts. After emerging from the darkness, she became ready to shine a light on who she is and what she does—like she should’ve a long time ago.“I allowed myself to support a narrative I thought I had to support of PVRIS being a band,” she confesses. “I didn’t really have a role model for this. Coming from a ‘band culture,’ it’s about how the group is always greater than the sum of its parts, and you’re not supposed to take credit, even if you do everything. There’s no template or role model for really owning it as a woman. I wanted to make everyone else happy and uphold an image I thought we had to. Growing up, I learned I don’t have to do that anymore. I’m finally allowing myself to take credit. I’ve got the full support and encouragement of my bandmates. PVRIS is a unit and very much a team, but the heart and soul of the vision and music always has sourced from me. I’m just saying it now. I fulfilled my own vision of what a role model should be.”Writing and recording all of2019, she found the perfect collaborator to bring this to life in JT Daly [K. Flay]. With Lynn writing, cooking up beats, playing guitar, drums, and bass, and singing, he amplified and augmented her vision and versatility in the studio.“He could bring the aggression out,” she smiles. “A lot of the resentment and pressure bottles up, but he helped me translate it into the music. We’ve always tried to make catchy pop songs and mask them with impactful production. We just found a new lens for PVRIS together.”The aperture for this lens opened on the five-track Hallucinations EP. The lead single and title track “Hallucinations” clocked 10 million total streams in a few months’ time and paved the path for the album. Flashes of synths cast shadows over a simmering beat as Lynn’s voice careens from breathy verses into a bold and bright refrain.“I had this book called Hallucinations,” she recalls. “The author details different types of hallucinations, why people hallucinate, and all of these theories. It explores whether it’s something external you can see, or if it’s internal. I was drawing on these ideas and trying to paint a picture with the song.”Meanwhile, an off-kilter rhythm and synth buzz reverberate under scratchy verses on “Dead Weight.” It slips into a neon bass bounce on the hook punctuated by warbled screams, handclaps, and robust guitar. Co-written with Nate Cyphert [Bebe Rexha, Florida Georgia Line] and Tommy English [Kacey Musgraves, K.FLAY], it crystallizes the revelation at the heart of Use Me . “The day before the session, I got a psychic reading,” she says. “My psychic has been spot-on every year in the past. This time, she was like, ‘Get in your power seat. Take credit for what you’re doing. Step up. It’s time.’ She recognized how much I try to give and take care of everyone around me. She was right. I had to shed my old skin and step into this new and empowered light.”Then, there’s “Good To Be Alive.” A distorted riffs ebbs and flows between electronic snaps as her intimate vocals give way to a bold and biting refrain, “Is this body even mine? Feels good to be alive, but I hate my life.” “It’s about auto-immune disease,” she sighs. “I’ve done a lot of inner work on myself emotional and physical, and I’m finally in a place where I feel like life is cool. It’s stressful, but it’s not do-or-die anymore. It feels good to be alive, yet I hate being sick. So, I crack jokes about it. It’s something I’ve never shown people in my songs.”In the end, Lynn shows herself like never before on Use Me and defines PVRIS.“When you hear this, I’d love for you to understand where I was and what I was going through,” she leaves off. “For as tough as it was, I’m stronger than ever—I’ve always been, but I’m finally embracing it. If you get anything from it, I hope it’s strength.”We want to hear from you! Mike, Max and Shane discuss nostalgia and the idea of chronicling their life story. Author Andrew Baulcomb joins the show to discuss his book “Evenings & Weekends: Five Years in Hamilton Music, 2006-2011.” Judah Akers, Brian Macdonald & Nate Zuercher of Judah and The Lion (“Take It All Back”) tell Mike about live shows, Florida Georgia Line, Belmont University, the Nashville “bubble,” J.J. Reddick, uniting people through music and band dynamics. For dessert, Shane describes the reason he's breaking his sober solidarity and the reason he broke his ankle.
