Chloe Akers is the Founder and CEO of the Best of Tennessee, "is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a more representative government because Tennesseans deserve leaders who reflect the priorities and values of the communities they serve." Chloe joins host Steve Boland to talk about the work of nonprofits to encourage participation in primary elections as a means to impacting government support of nonprofit missions. Chloe shared the history of the Best of Tennessee making the decision to build participation at the primary level because in a post-gerrymander world where districts are now intentionally structured to exclude competitive general elections. Chloe shows how increased participation in primary elections is a more impactful option for charities seeking to engage government partners in their issues. The Best of Tennessee ran several advertising campaigns (display ads, streaming video, social media) to help potential voters understand the importance of primary campaigns especially compared to the non-competitive gerrymandered general election. The range of messages is part of the strategy. While the Best of Tennessee is a 501 (c) 4 nonprofit, 501 (c) 3 nonprofits are absolutely allowed to encourage people to vote in primary elections, just be aware of prohibitions of advocating for specific candidates or parties. Veteran astronaut Tom Akers was born in St. Louis, grew up in Eminance, Missouri, and attended Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. Her conversation with Revs. Rhoda Makled & Anne Blanchard was both inspiring and insightful, offering profound reflections that resonated deeply with our community.About Regina Dawn AkersFor those who may not be familiar with Regina's story, here is some background:Awakening Together‘s founder, Regina Dawn Akers, grew up in middle-America as a Christian. Her religious training came from more than one Christian faith, and she was aware of differences in Biblical interpretation within the Christian community. She was also aware of the similarities that crossed all denominational boundaries, the most important of which was the statement, “God is love.” Regina knew in her heart that this must be true, and she yearned to know God's love perfectly.Although Regina was fascinated by all religions, she never felt to settle with any particular religion. She was driven by an inner desire she was not yet fully aware of, and Regina needed time to discover the calling within her heart.In April of 2004, Regina spontaneously awakened to her own desire while praying. She describes that prayer this way:“As I was praying, I felt overcome by a desire to be useful. I wanted nothing more than to be completely useful to God for the rest of my life. I told Him that I would learn anything He wanted me to learn and do anything He wanted me to do. I just asked Him to please make me useful.”Regina left her career and home in Massachusetts and moved with her young daughter to North Carolina. After the move was complete, she began the work of listening to the inner dictation that resulted in The Holy Spirit's Interpretation of the New Testament (NTI).In March of 2006, Regina received guidance to start The Foundation for the Holy Spirit with two friends, David Fishman and Phil Frisk. The purpose of the foundation was to provide resources, teaching and counseling to help individuals become Self-Reliant with their own inner guide, the Holy Spirit. Regina later received guidance to convert Foundation for the Holy Spirit into a church (an assembly of people with a common spiritual purpose) called Awakening Together. Sometimes I think about what it would have been like if I would have realized earlier in my career that I don't have to run, that if I just do the job the right way, it can be low stress. It took me fourteen years to come to those realizations. Ryan Akers figured it out MUCH faster. Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with West Virginia Author R. L. Akers! Prometheus Rebound and Prometheus Revealed were R. L.'s first published novels. He has also released Prometheus Rising, a collection of short story prequels set within the same universe. More recently, Akers tackled the legend of Atlantis and (on the far end of the genre spectrum) a series of mystery novellas featuring Gray Gaynes, an NYPD detective with an unusual problem. In Fall 2024, he launched a project dearer to his heart than any that came before: OVERTWIXT, the all-new young adult universe inspired by his own four children. Today, Akers continues to expand his Gray Gaynes and Overtwixt universes while actively developing several more brand-new properties. While dashing through the airport, four siblings (aged 5 through 15) pass through the wrong gate and find themselves transported to a different place entirely: OVERTWIXT the in-between world that links all the many realms of the cosmos. Even if they wanted to go back to their parents in the real world, that decision is taken out of their hands when the bridge home is destroyed behind them.
