MURDER AND SKULLDUGGERY ABOUND BEHIND THE SCENES IN EARLY TV In one of the first crime novels ever set behind the scenes of big-time television, Clarence Budington Kelland has plotted a thrilling adventure of danger and death which climaxes in a series of fast-moving surprises. Peter Mortain, one of the youngest directors in this very young medium, was beleaguered enough, directing the first episode of the most expensive variety show ever produced. He had a cast whose first appearance on television made them skittish, a thousand technical details to handle, and a star…who was also his boss! The blonde soprano was smooth, sultry. She was also mysteriously hired at the last minute and was taking the best songs and skits away from the other cast members and claiming them as her own—and the producer refused to stop her. From the first moment she joined the Tod Arundel Show, at least one member of the cast suspected her presence meant big-time trouble. That suspicion became a certainty when a corpse called on the young director. Peter directed the next rehearsal of his coast-to-coast television revue, knowing that somehow the glamorous soprano had picked up some nasty acquaintances. He worried that his back was the target for the next knife. Peter found out too fast why the sensational blonde was hired, and why their boss was paying her particular attention...and why she took a certain non-professional interest in Peter—for a price that added up to his own life. Unwittingly, he had become the key man in a in a nightmare intrigue. Murder and the Key Man shows one of the master storytellers of all time at his exciting best, populated with Kelland's vivid, memorable characters, with the signature brilliant, strong-minded heroine, eccentric romance, and showstopper of a grandmother, who solves most of the case herself.
A CLASSIC ROMANTIC MYSTERY BY CLARENCE BUDINGTON KELLAND What happens when a Korean War vet recovering from serious injuries wins a ghost town in a contest, meets a hard-riding, gun-toting cowgirl, and is threatened by three dangerous people all within a few days? Answer: Cock-eyed characters, pixilated dialogue, zany romance and heart-stopping suspense. In short, everything Kelland fans love about his novels. Based in part on real events – and set in a real ghost town that was actually given away (by The Saturday Evening Post) in a real contest, a place you can still visit today. Waldo Emerson Whitelaw was pleasantly surprised when he won a supposedly worthless Arizona ghost town named Sidewinder Gulch in a "write a jingle" contest. He was less pleasantly surprised when the glowering Hugo Pung offered him six thousand dollars for the deed – and threatened his life if he refused. Was Sidewinder Gulch somehow more valuable than Whitelaw believed? So, he took laconic, plain-spoken New Englanders Habakkuk Ware and his wife Melinna, who had raised him after his parent's death, and set off for Arizona. When they arrived, he met the rear end of a cow backing toward him in a clear state of hysteria, with ranch woman Gwendolin Carver attached to a rope at its head. "You underfed, skinny-legged dude," she said to Whitelaw, "Grab hold of this rope and help!" Everything he said and did after that only seemed to irritate her more. That night, self-styled land-speculator Miles Winter, and his seductive gal-friend, Mona Avery, showed up and made him an even bigger offer for the deed to Sidewinder Gulch. A few hours later a shot rang out. Thus begins one of Clarence Budington Kelland's finest, and rarest novels, previously only published as a seven-part serial in the legendary and bestselling magazine of its era, The Saturday Evening Post.
Episode 16 of The Carbon Curve is with Mike Kelland, CEO and Co-Founder of Planetary. This episode is sponsored by Carbonfuture.Carbonfuture is an end-to-end platform for companies that want to participate in removing carbon from the atmosphere. Unlike conventional marketplaces, Carbonfuture's monitoring, reporting, and verification platform solves carbon credit uncertainty for buyers like Microsoft and SwissRe while Carbonfuture's support helps scale the world's most promising carbon removal ventures for real climate impact.According to ocean climate NGO, Ocean Visions, the ocean is under threat from overfishing, plastic pollution, and of course climate change. But the organization thinks - if managed responsibly - the opportunity to harness the power of the ocean to sequester and store CO2 is massive compared to terrestrial methods. That's why researchers are exploring the carbon removal (or CDR) potential of this vast resource that covers 70% of our planet's surface. But ocean-based CDR methods are unique and pretty complex ranging from ocean alkalinity enhancement to sinking seaweed. In addition, the ocean is a dynamic environment: it's tricky to measure the quantity of CO2 removed, it's unclear what impact different ocean-based CDR methods will have on ecosystems, and figuring out the policies and regulations to responsibly pilot, test, and eventually scale up the best solutions is really difficult. This is a field within carbon removal that's gaining a lot of traction precisely because there's so much to learn about what responsible and effective ocean-based CDR looks like. So today, I'm speaking to Mike Kelland, Co-Founder and CEO of Planetary, committed to enhancing the ocean's potential as a carbon sink while addressing ocean health in the process. In this episode, Na'im and Mike discuss:* Planetary's origin story and their ocean-based CDR method* Why the ocean is an important medium for CDR* Some of the risks associated with ocean-based CDR and how to mitigate them* How to get measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) right with ocean-based CDR methods* Planetary's Code of Conduct* What effective engagement of coastal communities and supportive policies and regulations look like* A 10-year vision of success in scaling up ocean-based CDR methodsRelevant links:* Planetary's website* Planetary's Science and Technology Code of Conduct* Recent coverage of Planetary's work on the TODAY Show (Twitter)* Learn about ocean-based CDR at Ocean VisionsIf you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe to this podcast on your favorite podcast app or subscribe via The Carbon Curve newsletter here. Her Brother Went To War To Fight For His Country - She Stayed Home To Fight For His Business - She Was Her Brother's Keeper When Maggie McTigg's brother Michael McTigg went off to fight in World War II, he left his taxicab company in her hands, as the only member of the family with a lick of business sense, he asked her to keep it running while he was gone. Maggie took it as a sacred trust, her own contribution to the war efforts, and resolved that it would still be operating when the conflict was over, he was finally demobbed and returned home – no matter what it took and what she had to do. Since most men were off fighting, she hired women drivers to fill their slots, and when she found out how the drunken men they picked up after hours acted, Maggie hired the toughest women she could find to drive – and that settled the late-night male passengers down more than a bit. When the rival cab company, run by mobsters, started sabotaging her brother's taxies, Maggie fought fire with fire, and the rival's cabs were out of commission for days. But when a man was gunned down just outside her office over "more than five and less than ten millions," Maggie wonders if at last she might be getting in over her head – just how far will a woman go to keep her soldier brother's heritage alive for him until a war is over? Meet Maggie McTigg, an outspoken, zany, endearing and fearless woman, and a classic Kelland heroine. And a typical cast of offbeat Kelland characters: Dougall Maibe, who kept turning up at Maggie's with sandwiches and coffee, after every disturbing event; but was he there because he caused the events, was trying to stop them – or was just fascinated by Maggie? Toots, Maggie's best friend and self-elected bodyguard of pugilistic ambitions, who could lift a filled steamer trunk with one arm and yearned to change the fact that through throughout history "menfolks had hogged all the slugging." Sime McCarthy, hoodlum on the rise, had an interest in every illicit activity in town and an eye on taking over the mob, and wasn't beneath solving his problems with guns – not even when the problem was a woman. The mysterious passenger, identity unknown who left behind a brief case containing a Gideon Bible, a clipping from a New York newspaper, a photograph of a scantily dressed woman, a 32-caliber automatic – and a clue to the location of loot worth "more than five and less than ten million" dollars. Anton Marsayrik, a leader of men, the many refugee Carpathian glass blowers who had come to work a local factory – he knew a kindness when he saw it. Paddy the Mop, leader of the town's large Irish population, who believed "a little honest graft from pavin' streets or erectin' the county buildin' does small harm" – but considered Sime McCarthy and killing beyond the pale. Eugene, he thought of himself as his boss' trained snake, and his gun as the fangs, he dreamed of putting a bullet into Maggie – he'd never seen Toots wield a steamer trunk. Powell Lee Coffin, high-class criminal, who fell genuinely in love with Maggie, she knew he was sincere when he asked her to sail around the world with him as "a kind of high-class hussy." Another suspenseful, pixilated, classic romantic Kelland thriller from the pages of the legendary Saturday Evening Post, never before reprinted – first time in book form!
CLICK LINK FOR YOUR OWN COPY AN OUTSTANDING GOLDEN AGE MYSTERY CLASSIC AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS ABOUT THE WOMEN OF WORLD WAR II! Heart on Her Sleeve is the story of a patriotic American college girl who steps up to run her father's war plant when he is hospitalized by saboteurs. Not long after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and US entry into the Second World War, the government realized the draft would seriously deplete the country's entire workforce, including entry-level labor, skilled trades, office staff, and management. The only possible replacement was to be found in the ranks of the nation's women. But for women to join the workforce, major changes would have to occur. Traditionally characterized as an emotional and care-giving labor force—homemakers, mothers, nurses, teachers and the like—women would have to adopt a whole new view of themselves and their capacities (as would men), and quickly. In a world without TV or internet, a radical re-envisioning of women's capabilities would have to be promulgated via radio, newspapers, and magazines. So the US government called together leading writers and journalists, asking them to help by printing and broadcasting stories, novels, and factual reports supporting the heretical notion that women could make great factory and office workers—and even run those factories and offices—without losing their “natural” urge to be homemakers, mothers, and wives. This campaign began in the May 29, 1943 Saturday Evening Post with a two-part kick-off: Exploding from the cover, Norman Rockwell's overpowering, goddess-proportioned painting of Rosie the Riveter in overalls, with a touch of lipstick and blush, a rivet gun balanced across her thighs, a look of unflappable nonchalance, the Stars and Stripes unfurled behind her, and a copy of Mein Kampf crushed beneath her feet. And, to her left, boxed text beckoned readers to discover the initial installment of a new Kelland serial—Heart on Her Sleeve.
CLICK LINK FOR YOUR OWN COPY A ZANY INNOCENTS AT LARGE MYSTERY Columbine Pepper Drugget's background wasn't one that equipped a young woman to manage a motel worth a million dollars, or cope with rude guests, jewel thieves, an unscrupulous competitor – or even the attentions of a brassy but oddly attractive lawyer. She had spent her life so far as an assistant to her aunt, Miss Egeria Cordwainer, at Miss Cordwainer's School for Girls from Five to Ten. What she knew about the world was limited to the novels of Jane Austen and such bits of knowledge as the pupils possessed. None of this prepared her to assume the proprietorship of a multimillion-dollar luxury motor court in Phoenix, Arizona, left to her by her estranged father—or, indeed, for what ensued when she set off alone to claim it. Her adventures began on the train, where she met a strange trio of passengers who, unbeknownst to Miss Drugget, would soon become more intimately involved in her life. They included a suspicious-looking clergyman known only as Martinus, Professor Artemus Thumb (who was a fanatic about his thesis, “The Place of Primitive Magic in the Development of Pastoral Peoples”), and Mrs. Roxy Thistlebun, a rich Texas oil widow. As it happens, that was also the night one of her suitcases became switched with one containing thousands of dollars in stolen jewels. Miss Drugget's life became even more complicated when she arrived in Phoenix to assume her new duties as the owner-operator of The Grove of Daphne Motor Court. In addition to discovering the jewels—and a very businesslike gun—in her suitcase, she needed to discover which of her employees was stealing the motel blind. She also needed to head off an attempt by a local real estate magnate, Lucius Quentin, to acquire ownership of her motel. Then there was the junior partner in her late father's law firm, Sam Green, whom she found herself relying upon for assistance far more often than she liked—due to his disturbing effect on her. What perturbed Miss Drugget most, however, was that somehow she seemed to have become a magnet for murder… Here is a true-to-form, zany Kelland tale featuring a strong and brilliant (if thoroughly unprepared) heroine, fast-paced adventure, humor and homicide—and even a touch of romance.

On this episode of the Welcome to the Metaverse podcast, I chat to Nick Kelland, who is the Marketing and Community Manager of Guild of Guardians. Guild of Guardians is an upcoming mobile RPG blockchain game, which is ready to disrupt the whole gaming industry. Whether you are a gamer or not, this episode is an awesome insight into what is happening in this exploding space from the industry side, what is being built right now and what opportunities are coming in gaming and the wider metaverse. Nick is really really smart when it comes to a) telling us all about what they are building with Guild of Guardians specifically, which sounds epic in it's own right (and is also a great time to be learning about a game that I think is set to be massive). and b) going deeper as we talk about the disruption that blockchain play-to-earn gaming is bringing to the whole gaming space and how understanding this movement now, is a great position to be in. I know you're gonna enjoy this episode and get loads of value from it. I genuinely left this episode buzzing for what is to come. ======================= If you are enjoying the podcast so far and would be happy to leave a rating or review on your platform, that would be amazing and really really helps, thank you everyone who has.
