Today, it is my pleasure to speak with Betsy Erickson & Joseph Brooks, Co-Heads of Family and Individual Services at Arabella Advisors, a leading philanthropy services firm supporting individual, family, institutional, and corporate donors worldwide. Prior to joining Arabella, Betsy worked for eight years in the nonprofit sector with groups focused on cancer research. She provided independent consulting services to national and regional nonprofit organizations such as CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Prior to joining Arabella, Joseph led the philanthropic advising team at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and was a fundraising strategist for Marquette University and the country's largest HIV/AIDS service organization. Betsy and Joseph, and their firm Arabella, are valued Advisor members of FOX, and we are privileged to have their knowledge and expertise in our membership community. The role of philanthropy within enterprise families is evolving – in some cases, philanthropy becoming the primary activity of the family enterprise. Betsy and Joseph talk about what is happening today in the world of family philanthropy and highlight the latest trends that have been shaping the space over the recent years. These trends are inevitably affecting the role and design of the family office. Betsy and Joseph explain how family offices are transforming to respond to the importance of philanthropy and how they should be redesigned to support the family's evolving needs and activities. Arabella Advisors has put forth a body of thought leadership on the barriers to philanthropy that constrain enterprise families. Betsy and Joseph provide an overview of the most common barriers families face and how they can practically overcome them. Philanthropy is often one of the most common activities families undertake together after they have evolved beyond being fully focused on their business – and as a result, it often is the training ground for other joint activities by the family. Betsy and Joseph share their views on the role of philanthropy in helping families work together and its broader practical implications on fostering lasting collaboration and unity among family members. Don't miss this highly informative conversation with two of the leading experts and advisors in the realm of family giving and philanthropy.
Segment 3, July 15th, 2023 Reel Recovery is a program that uses fly fishing to help men cope with the diagnosis & treatment of cancer. In 2003, Stu Brown was battling brain cancer but found that fly fishing trips helped him cope. Brown met cyclist Lance Armstrong who's Lance Armstrong Foundation committed to help fund the program. Doug Turner of Reel Recovery joins the program to talk about his experience with cancer & how it led him to the Reel Recovery program. In fact, during that same time he was signed up to lead the program in North and South Carolina. He has found that Reel Recovery position as a cancer support group has been powerful because it provides men with an outlet of escape, fellowship, & a time for courageous conversations, that has been powerful. Of course, there are many programs that utilize the outdoors and fly fishing but Reel Recovery has found a way to provide their retreats free to participants. Turner's first retreat was in 2019 & there is one planned for October 6-8th, 2023 at Springmaid Mountain in Spruce Pine, NC. One challenge are getting volunteers that are willing to spend time with the participants on the creek, river, or lake. Plus, donations are always welcome. If you're interested in joining in with the Reel Recovery team you can note it ONLINE or email or call Doug Turner (573-480-1950) The next Carolina meeting will be a fundraiser at WB Brewery in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Remember Stu Brown's quote, "Be Well! Fish On!"
Lance Armstrong was regarded as an elite cycling superstar. Between the years of 1999 to 2005, Lance had obtained seven consecutive Tour de France wins - something no one has ever achieved before, or since. He was considered by many to be the best athlete in his sport at the time. And even more stunning? Just 2 years prior to first of these consecutive wins, Lance had been diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain; and not only did Lance survive, but seemingly thrived post treatment. He went on to create the Lance Armstrong Foundation - raising hundreds of millions of dollars from the sale of yellow Livestrong bracelets. Those little yellow bracelets became a ubiquitous feature on the wrists of many in America and around the world for cancer awareness and in support of the Texan hometown hero, Lance Armstrong. So, how would Lance, only a few years later, become stripped of all of his achievements from August 1998 onward, including his seven Tour de France titles….and be labeled as a disgrace in the sports world? Imagine being told by your boss on your very first day at work that you are literally going to be doing cold calls to clients in an isolated office all day despite having no experience. What do you do? Go into the corner and start to cry? Or, roll with the punches telling yourself that with each call you will get better? Adam Ryan chose to do the latter when it came to his very first day at work. Adam Ryan is a former 9th-grade government teacher originally from Columbia, Missouri, who had the opportunity via the Lance Armstrong Foundation to come to Austin, Texas which was supporting a non-profit charity he was working with. He was working for free before taking a leap into the world of media marketing and began working for Spiceworks, a B2B media platform mainly focusing on IT where he sold advertising. When working at Spiceworks began to lose its luster, Adam soon left to work with Under Armour where he worked to assist in making major acquisitions that involved familiar names such as MapMyFitness and Endomondo. In taking the plunge, Adam would soon contribute to the major successes of The Hustle in addition to soon becoming the President of the company.
The Paris Air Show kicked off earlier this week, and the most awkward guest at the party appears to be Boeing, the airplane maker that’s been scrambling since March to fix a software glitch that’s being blamed for two fatal plane crashes. And the fix truly can’t come quick enough. The FAA has grounded the plane at the heart of the disasters – the 737 Max 8 – and Boeing’s biggest airline customers are mired in delays due to the airplane shortage. In fact, several of those big customers, including Delta and American Airlines, made deals with Boeing rival Airbus on the first day of the show, while Boeing netted zero new orders. In speaking to reporters at Paris, Boeing’s CEO of commercial aircraft Kevin McAllister apologized not only “for the loss of lives” but also for the disruptions the airlines were facing and how it was impacting summer travel. And while it’s hustling to try to fix the problem in a way that satisfies regulators, customers and travelers alike, Boeing has no timetable for when the plane will fly again. So, what else can they do in the meantime?Bloomberg has reported that Boeing’s CFO Greg Smith told reporters the company remains “open-minded” to changes that will help restore the infamous plane, one of which might be a rebrand – meaning, the company could actually change the plane’s name. However you feel about this tactic, it wouldn’t be the first time a company tried to skirt bad publicity by slapping a new name on something – let us not forget that the cancer non-profit Livestrong was once called the Lance Armstrong Foundation.Boeing says its most immediate objective is not a re-brand, rather, it’s getting the plane back in the air safely, and re-earning the trust of the airlines and traveling public. And while it seems Boeing is acknowledging a pretty real threat – what if nobody wants to get on the planes even after they’ve been fixed? – is it considered “re-earning trust” when you just slap a new name on the plane?Heck, maybe they won’t need to. Day 2 of the Paris Show resulted in a win for Boeing, who netted a letter of intent from International Airlines Group for 200 737s, the company’s first order for the jetliner since the fatal March crash.

Lance: "We’re building a global movement, and we’re going to win.” Is Lance Armstrong on the Roadto Rocking a ‘Stache? He will be if Lance Armstrong Foundation CEO Doug Ulman has any say in the matter. On today’s debut of the LiveStrong Global Cancer Campaign Series, Doug chats with Adam Garone about cancer-awareness efforts in Adam’s home nation of Australia – where Lance is making his return to pro cycling. In 2003, Adam co-founded Movember, a charity event to help raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. As an emblem of his efforts, he grew a bushy mustache. By November 2008, the annual event had grown to include blokes around the globe. “I’ll make you a deal: Since I’m a cancer survivor and since my dad had prostate cancer, I’ll [grow a mustache],” Doug tells Adam. “I’ve never rocked a mustache, so I’ll do it in ’09.”“And we need to get Lance on as well,” says Adam.“Exactly. I figure if I can do it, I can convince him. It’s the off-season, so that’s a good time,” says Doug. Adam is the first is a series of cancer-awareness bloggers who will be interviewed on the show. Next month, Lance himself – to kick off the U.S. leg of his campaign – will chat with American bloggers here on BlogTalkRadio. After that, the world’s greatest bicycle racer is off to Belgium for the Tour of Flanders (April 5), then onto France for the Tour de France (July 4-26). All the while, Lance will be bringing his cancer-awareness-raising conversations with local bloggers to BlogTalkRadio.
