The small mountain town of Spruce Pine provides nearly all of the ultra-pure quartz used to make the world's semiconductors. When Hurricane Helene nearly wiped out the mines, it provided a stark wake-up call. Journalist Ed Conway joins Dylan to discuss what we can learn from this near-miss. It's Tuesday, October 8th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Adam McManus Gutsy Australian pastor won't bow knee to Aborigine pagan religion An Australian pastor is facing charges in Queensland State for opposing Australia's “Welcome to Country” ceremonies, based in Aborigine pagan religion. On the basis of biblical law, Dave Pellowe, pastor and founder of Church and State Ministries cited Psalm 24, and claimed that “the Earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof” in opposition to the claims of the Aboriginal traditional religions and rituals. Pastor Pellowe said, “[Welcome to Country rituals] are religious rituals which Christians in particular should have no part of. And under a democratic, allegedly secular and pluralistic society, it should also be something that the taxpayer doesn't fund and the government doesn't impose. It's the duty of Christians to preach the truth and the Gospel and to not mix Christianity with false religion, such as the Aboriginal traditional religion, which is bearing all the hallmarks of paganism's inherently false beliefs.” Dave is now facing ongoing inquisitions from the Queensland Human Rights Commission. New Russian law bans adoptions to pro-trans countries By a vote of 397 to 1, Russia's parliament voted last week to ban all adoptions to persons living in countries allowing homosexual faux-marriage and or gender reassignment. South China News reports that Russia has 358,000 children in orphanages, or what they call care homes, and only 6 were adopted to foreign citizens last year. China also announced last week they are halting all adoptions to foreign nations. U.S. families have adopted 82,674 children from China over the last few decades. Iranian & North Korean underground nuclear tests causing earthquakes Seismic activity which may have been an underground nuclear test was detected late Saturday night near the city of Aradan, Iran. The U.S. Geological Survey detected an earthquake at 4.6 on the Richter scale, but noted the absence of seismic compression waves, which typically accompany natural earthquakes. A nuclear test is distinguished by a sharp peak in intensity at the very beginning as well as the absence of “aftershocks” and preliminary tremors. North Korean underground tests have produced earthquakes anywhere from 4.2 to 6.3 on the Richter scale. Fools run amuck in England Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” There are more adherents to the religion of Atheism in England than those who would acknowledge Theism. The study conducted by a research team at Queen's University, Belfast, found that atheists increased from 35.2% to 42.9% of the population between 2008 and 2018. The study found that the influence of parents appears to be the largest factor that contributes to a child adhering to a theist faith. One year anniversary of Hamas attack on Israel Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary since the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel. Palestine's economy has dropped off from $4 billion to $2.57 billion since the war started, reports Reuters. The loss of life has been extensive, although the numbers of war dead are usually debatable. Israel reports 1,200 people killed in the war, including about 800 civilians, 346 Israel Defense Forces soldiers and 66 police officers. 97 Israeli hostages are still held in Gaza, And, the Palestinians claim over 40,000 of their own killed in the war. Amos 3:6 asks the question: “Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city, unless the LORD has done it?” Hurricane Milton more powerful than Hurricane Helene Hurricane Milton is barreling towards Tampa, Florida and Florida's Gulf Coast — possibly packing a punch of a Level 5 hurricane with wind strength upwards of 180 mph. The storm is expected to make landfall by tomorrow afternoon, reports NBC News. In fact, the forecast for ocean surge in Tampa Bay is up to 15 feet if the peak surge coincides with high tide. Milton arrives just as America is emerging from the devastation of Hurricane Helene which could be the costliest hurricane in recent history. AccuWeather has increased its estimate of the total damage and economic loss of Hurricane Helene to be between $225 billion and $250 billion. It was the deadliest hurricane on American soil since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Conditions in western North Carolina are still dire. For example, the City of Asheville's water supply system was totally destroyed as water mains and pipes were swept away in the floods. How one Baptist church in North Carolina is helping hurricane victims And finally, the devastation of Hurricane Helene has been matched by the kindness of neighbors. I talked with Scott Brown, President of Church and Family Life and the pastor at Hope Baptist Church in Wake Forest, North Carolina, outside Raleigh. He began getting flooded with calls and texts from pastors at like-minded Evangelical reformed churches affected by Hurricane Helene. BROWN: “There's a church that's near us in Wake Forest that got stranded in a place called Burnsville. They couldn't get out, and they needed some people to come and pick up the women and children. So, the men, you know, would stay with their cars until they could get the cars out. So, we sent several vans up to go pick up these people that were stranded.” He explained what drew them to Spruce Pine, a four-and-a-half-hour drive away from Wake Forest, with a population of 2,175, in Western North Carolina. BROWN: “My fellow pastor, Trent Moody, grew up in Spruce Pine, so he knew people here. We wanted to go try to help people that we knew really had needs. And Trent came up to the place he grew up and started knocking on doors and we're up here.” He described the conditions. BROWN: “You can't imagine how much mud, how many trees, how much destruction is everywhere. I've never seen so many power lines just laying on the roads.” Their crew of eight young men from Hope Baptist Church got busy with four chain saws to clear away the downed trees. They helped one lady yesterday by the name of Mrs. Mace. BROWN: “Today we were at this woman's house that he found whose roof was damaged. There are trees all over the place. Tree hit her house. This old woman living all by herself. Husband died two years ago. “She's kind of like an Appalachian Memaw, you know. Just this very funny, strong woman. But she needed a lot of help. I mean, massive trees all around her house that we spent the day with chainsaws today. We'll be repairing her house tomorrow.” Scott Brown described what the real need is right now. BROWN: “The big need right now is cleanup -- chainsaws, bobcats, cleaning supplies, mold remediation. The mud factor in the lowlands is just unbelievable.” When I asked him if he had seen any personnel from the Federal Emergency Management Agency known as FEMA which appears to be missing in action, he revealed this. BROWN: “We haven't seen FEMA around in these mountain areas at all. It's pretty much people from all over the country bringing supplies, and also people within the community just helping each other. That's really all we've seen. I can't testify to what FEMA is doing anywhere else. We're in the rural areas. We're dealing with mountain people.” He underscored the generosity of the body of Christ. BROWN: “Isaiah 32:8 says, ‘The generous man devises generosity,' and that's what we've really seen with the American people. The overflowing outpouring of resources toward this area is just fantastic. The fire departments, the churches, they don't even know how to store what's been brought up here because of the generosity of the American people.” In the midst of the loss, the mountain people of North Carolina have expressed their gratitude. BROWN: “Extremely thankful people, even in the midst of many of them, have lost everything. It's astounding.” Hope Baptist Church plans to continue to send teams of volunteers into the Noth Carolinian mountains. October 8, 2024 ~ Lloyd, Jamie, and Dave LewAllen talk with Lisa McLain Jensen, a native of Bloomfield Hills, MI and longtime resident of Spruce Pine, NC, about the incredible damage from Hurricane Helene, and how the community and nation are helping the people of North Carolina recover from the devastation.
The storm flooded mines in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, which supply the tech industry with some of the purest quartz in the world. Also, researchers developed a 3D-printable material, inspired by worms, that can act as a Band-Aid for damaged heart and cartilage tissue.Hurricane Helene's Damage Could Affect The Global Tech IndustryAfter making landfall on September 26, Hurricane Helene devastated regions in the southeastern US. Over 200 people are confirmed dead so far. About a million people are still without power, and many lack clean water. As climate change intensifies, hurricanes like Helene are expected to occur more often and be more intense. What's become very clear in the last few years is that due to the interconnectedness of the modern world, extreme weather in one place can have global implications. For example, Spruce Pine, North Carolina, home to around 2,200 people, flooded during Hurricane Helene. The town is also home to several mines that produce some of the world's purest quartz, an ingredient necessary to make solar panels, smartphones, semiconductors, and more.Ira talks with Umair Irfan, senior correspondent at Vox, about this and other science news of the week, including a completed map of a fruit fly's brain, how scientists in the United Kingdom are screening newborns for rare diseases, and how octopuses and fish are hunting as a team.A Strong, Stretchy, And Sticky Band-Aid For The HeartThe heart is an impressive organ that has to beat constantly for years. But what happens when heart tissue is damaged? Or when cartilage in joints like our knees wears out? These constantly moving tissues don't regenerate easily, and there aren't a lot of great treatment options. To address these kinds of problems, a team at University of Colorado Boulder invented a new strong, stretchy, and sticky hydrogel material that could act as a Band-Aid to heart or tissue lesions. They were inspired by masses of worms that tangle and untangle themselves, behaving almost as both a solid and liquid. The team was able to replicate that in a molecular structure with the help of a new 3D-printing technique. And it could have applications far beyond medicine, including for manufacturing and improving the 3D-printing process itself. Their research was published in the journal Science, and their lab has filed for a provisional patent for the material.Dr. Jason Burdick, professor of chemical and biological engineering at CU Boulder's BioFrontiers Institute, joins Ira Flatow to talk about the new material and how it could improve future tissue and cartilage treatment.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Max talks about the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, which resulted in at least 200 deaths, mostly in North Carolina, and brought unprecedented rainfall to the Southeast. Towns like Hendersonville and Spruce Pine received over 20 inches of rain, causing widespread flooding and isolating mountain communities. Relief efforts have been extensive, involving the National Guard, Coast Guard, and various aviation groups. Helicopters have played a crucial role in reaching remote areas, while general aviation pilots have been delivering supplies. Listeners who participated talk about their experiences transporting essential goods, such as water and food, and detailed their experiences flying into affected areas. Organizations like Operation Airdrop and Aerobridge coordinated hundreds of flights, delivering supplies to impacted communities. The podcast highlighted the importance of working through relief organizations to ensure supplies reach those in need efficiently, and that the need for volunteer pilots continues. In part two of The Mighty Bucks, the town of Spruce Pine falls in love with the Pinebridge Bucks, even if the stands are full of novice hockey fans. The Bucks players become local celebrities around Spruce Pine, as the Bucks represent a first step and even a last hope for NHL prospects. The financial realities of fielding a professional sports team prove to be tricky, and are complicated even more by a mysterious religious cult that tries to lay claim to Robert Bailey's business.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In 1983, Spruce Pine, North Carolina set a record for the smallest town to ever have a professional sports team, a record that remains intact to this day. In an act of perseverance and blind ambition, a remote town of only 2,000 residents ended up with a 5,000-seat hockey stadium. In part one of The Mighty Bucks, reporters Sean and Louise Flynn introduce us to Robert Bailey, a starry-eyed stove maker who knew nothing about hockey, but battled the elements and mixed expectations to build the Pinebridge Bucks.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Segment 3, July 15th, 2023 Reel Recovery is a program that uses fly fishing to help men cope with the diagnosis & treatment of cancer. In 2003, Stu Brown was battling brain cancer but found that fly fishing trips helped him cope. Brown met cyclist Lance Armstrong who's Lance Armstrong Foundation committed to help fund the program. Doug Turner of Reel Recovery joins the program to talk about his experience with cancer & how it led him to the Reel Recovery program. In fact, during that same time he was signed up to lead the program in North and South Carolina. He has found that Reel Recovery position as a cancer support group has been powerful because it provides men with an outlet of escape, fellowship, & a time for courageous conversations, that has been powerful. Of course, there are many programs that utilize the outdoors and fly fishing but Reel Recovery has found a way to provide their retreats free to participants. Turner's first retreat was in 2019 & there is one planned for October 6-8th, 2023 at Springmaid Mountain in Spruce Pine, NC. One challenge are getting volunteers that are willing to spend time with the participants on the creek, river, or lake. Plus, donations are always welcome. If you're interested in joining in with the Reel Recovery team you can note it ONLINE or email or call Doug Turner (573-480-1950) The next Carolina meeting will be a fundraiser at WB Brewery in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Remember Stu Brown's quote, "Be Well! Fish On!"

This year, flameworking pioneer Paul Stankard will celebrate his 80th birthday. To commemorate more than six decades at the torch, the artist joined Talking Out Your Glass podcast for a return visit featuring a discussion about his contributions to glass and art, including his new book, Inspiration from the Art of Paul J. Stankard: A Window into My Studio and Soul. Jack Wax, artist and head of the glass department at The Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, wrote the following about Stankard's latest and fourth book: “Paul Joseph Stankard is the living master of the art of the botanical paperweight. There ought not to be any argument as to where he stands in the history of this endeavor, an undertaking that dates back to the mid-19th century and the famed Venetian glassmaker Pietro Bigaglia. He has, as a noted autodidact, aimed at elevating the production of these objects to stratospheric heights. His patient and long-term focus on capturing the subtle beauty of blossoms before they fade, and of bouquets that never wilt, has brought to the world marvels of observation, obsession, fixation, and, importantly, of invention. There is a tendency for people to gaze in wonder and become infatuated when encountering “impossible objects” for the first time. This has been his purview. That said, becoming a master in the world of 21st-century decorative art production might not ensure that your corollary endeavors—writing poetry and laying out the inexorably tied-up nature of beauty's role in the success of an artwork—needs to be shared with posterity. Stankard's voice is sincere and heartfelt. His choice of words is deeply weighed, his phrasing and pacing seriously considered. He is, after all, attempting to distill, out of the quickly dispersing mists of creativity, an essence, a tincture that will contain some drops of truth. That can, at times, become a dangerous area to interpret and translate for a broad swath of the population. Being great at one thing in no way guarantees that one is good at another… If you pick this book up, you will assuredly spend time considering the beauty of Paul Stankard's botanical images in glass. He is a genuinely passionate, sincerely earnest maker who cares deeply for the natural world and has devoted a lifetime to the true intricacies of what is visible—and what is not—for those who persevere and cultivate what may be revealed in the application of an extraordinarily sustained and amplified focus.” Considered a living master in the art of the paperweight, Stankard's work is represented in more than 75 museums around the world. Over his 40-year artistic journey, he has received two honorary doctorate degrees, an honorary associate's degree, and many awards within the glass community, most recently the Masters of the Medium Award from Smithsonian's The James Renwick Alliance and the Glass Art Society's Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the American Craft Council and a recipient of the UrbanGlass Award—Innovation in a Glassworking Technique. In 1961, Stankard enrolled in Salem County Vocational Technical Institute's Scientific Glassblowing program (now Salem Community College). During his subsequent 10-year scientific glassblowing career, fabricating complex instruments was his focus. As head of the glass department at Rohn & Haas in Philadelphia, the artist began experimenting with floral paperweights as a hobby. The work was eventually noticed by art dealer Reese Palley at a craft expo in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and in 1972, Stankard abandoned industry for art. Stankard's role as educator includes establishing the flameworking studio at Penland School of Craft, Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and serving as a founding board member and President of The Creative Glass Center of America, Millville, New Jersey. The artist taught students in the US at Penland; the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington; and abroad at Kanaz Forest of Creation Japan with Hiroshi Yamano as well as at North Lands Creative, in the Scottish Highlands. He remains an Artist-in-Residence and Honorary Professor at Salem Community College, where he founded the International Flameworking Conference. Now dividing his time between flameworking and writing, Stankard is the author of Inspiration from the Art of Paul J. Stankard: A Window into My Studio and Soul; an autobiography No Green Berries or Leaves: The Creative Journey of an Artist in Glass; an educational resource Spark the Creative Flame: Making the Journey from Craft to Art; and Studio Craft as Career: A Guide to Achieving Excellence in Art-making. In March 2023, Stankard will once again attend the International Flameworking Conference (IFC). He will also be instructing a workshop with Lucio Bubacco in May. IFC details are at www.salemcc.edu/ifc and workshop info is at https://salemcc.edu/glass/intensive-glass-workshop In celebration of his 80th birthday, WheatonArts will host a Celebration of the Life & Work of Paul J. Stankard, Saturday, May 20, 2023. Click link below for the latest information. Campus-wide activities will be highlighted by collaborative Glass Studio demonstrations with Stankard and friends, curator tours of the Museum of American Glass featuring Amber Cowan's solo exhibit Alchemy of Adornment, and special fare catered by Feast Your Eyes Catering. Proceeds benefit the WheatonArts Glass Studio programs. Dan Collins – documentary filmmaker with strong roots in the glass art community, producing work that focuses on both the American Studio Glass Movement and the often-misunderstood borosilicate pipe movement – filmed Stankard for a documentary that will be shown in May at the WheatonArts event. The film includes the artist creating a piece from his Celestial Bouquet series. Stankard's work will be exhibited at the Morris Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, in Morristown, New Jersey, in early 2023.
