In tonight's episode, we're heading into the dark corners of the British countryside, where more than a few people have come face to face with something they can't explain. These aren't tall tales from deep in the American wilderness. These are stories from people in Scotland, Derbyshire, Oldham… places where folklore runs deep and the forests seem to hold their breath after dark.We start with an eerie pair of encounters near Cairnpapple Hill in the Bathgate Hills of Scotland. A young driver and his friends stumble upon a dark figure racing towards their car. Years later, he returns—only to find that something still waits for him in the snow, following his every move.Next, we travel to the winding Carrick Hills of Ayrshire, where a family drive turns into something much darker. A father, not known for fear, sees something out on the hills he refuses to talk about for the rest of his life. He never takes his family that way again. From there, we move to British Aerospace at Monkton in 1999. A young woman walking alone at dawn sees something that should not exist. Standing seven feet tall, it watches her from just a few meters away, standing on two legs, growling low. After that day, she's never quite the same—and she never walks alone again. Then we hear the story of a welder in Oldham who decides to work late and sleep overnight at the factory. What follows is a terrifying series of events as he's stalked through the streets by something that looks more beast than man. He makes it to the train station—but only just. And finally, we share an anonymous email submission from “Paul,” a forestry worker who stayed behind one night near Glen Clova. He thought he was alone—until he realized something was following him through the silent woods. What stepped out of the darkness that night changed him forever.Five stories. Five encounters. And one unsettling possibility: that there's something ancient and unknown still out there. And it might be closer than you think. Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AMVisit HIMS.COM

How to get work with an agency with Sunjay Singh

Sunjay Singh is this weeks guest. He is in the sales and marketing world. He has a video agency which he runs with his co-founder, live media UK and a small marketing company which provdes marketing managers for small businesses called Lambardar marketing.   Marcus asks how it started. Sunjay says Will (co-founder) and him had never had “proper jobs”. Sunjay said when he was 14 or 15 his Dad walked in told him he had to photograph a wedding and then left. Sunjay had never taken a picture before in his life. His Dad had always enjoyed photography, But he ended up working at British Aerospace. But his Dad  always had a side hustle and was doing two jobs. So for a while he did wedding video and photography and Sanjay was the photographer. The weddings were British Asian weddings which were a minimum of 3 day events. He said there were so many people, often 50 to 60 people in a 2 bedroom house in Cardiff. Each wedding day could be 14 hours. He could leave one day at 1am and be back the next day at 5am. He says he got better very quickly as he was talking so many pictures in such a short space of time. They stopped doing British Indian weddings as the hours were so long and pay so low and moved onto British weddings.  But eventually he got fed up doing weddings, he had done too many. He was then getting more corporate work and they dropped weddings. But what that time gave him was a work ethic. Sunjay says if you want to get good at your craft, you have to do the reps. Do it again and again. It's not just about working on one shot it's about doing it again and again. If you are creative and not constantly developing your craft that is a dangerous place to be. Now Sunjay is running a video agency using videographers who work for him. He also uses photographers in his agency. Sam asks how Sunjay decided which photographers to work with. Sanjay says that anyway running a business needs to wear many hats and possibly masks. When you are speaking to Sanjay and talking about logistics, don't be a creative, at that point you need to be a business person. He says if it helps, where a tie when you do your emails. Get into the mindset of being a business person. When you are on the shoot, be creative. But be the reliable business person at other times, especially when discussing logistics. The other thing Sanjay looks for is composure. He needs them to be confident and composed. If the photographer doesn't turn up composed and confident then that is hopeless. The photographers needs to stay calm no matter what the shoot throws at you. Speed is another thing. Both getting the shot and getting the photographs back. Clients expect the photos back very quickly. They know it is digital and so expect the photographs very quickly. Yous presentation is also important. Sanjay has seen too many scruffy photographers. By being scruffy you are showing don't care about aesthetics. You are signalling that you don't care about aesthetics which gives the wrong message.   Sam asks how a photographer can go about getting agency work. Sanjay says there is no clear answer, but the key thing is relationship building and being in the right place in the right time. For example Sanjay meets lots of photographers, but he doesn't have a shoot that week and the photographers never get in touch again. They need to stay in touch. Sanjay then says make a list of ten people you want to work with. Get in touch every month and then every other month arrange an in person meeting. Don't chat work, or ask for work, just build a relationship and some of them will give you work.   Sanjay mentions a book The Creative Act, Rick Rubin. He says this is an amazing book. You can connect with Sunjay on LinekdIn To get the Shoot to the Top Podcast in your inbox every week to ensure you don't miss an episode, click here Join the Shoot to the Top Facebook group to meet fellow photographers, guests and Sam and Marcus

You may recognise her from recent episode such as: ·      Top 10 Reasons to use ISO 42001 AI Management ·      Top ISO Standard Trends in the Data Centre Industry Steph will be sharing findings from our own research, standards updates and conducting interviews with our isologists. [03:35] An Introduction to Ian Battersby – Ian has been working for Blackmores since August 2023. Although he is meant to be part-time, he's had a very busy first few months here! Ian began working in British Aerospace, specifically manufacturing, in 1984. He later decided to return to university to study electrical and electronic engineering, which was promptly dropped. His return to BAE lasted a few years before he moved onto the civil service for the Department of Health, working with them to conduct safety investigations and helped to create a broader risk profile. When he moved to work with the NHS, firstly, with the litigation authority setting up governance and risk standards and then as a risk manager. Surprisingly, after moving up a few levels, he decided to move onto run a restaurant! A Curry House to be specific, but after a year of rather stressful work that ended up costing a lot more than expected, he returned to work within the construction industry which is where he became more involved with ISO Standards. From there he went onto work in manufacturing of high pressure pumps for a while before moving onto an organisation who rant he estate for the Department of Work and Pensions. In the end, Ian left them due to being unable to live the life he wanted to live. [05:15] What Standards has Ian worked with? – He started with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 (now ISO 45001). [06:00] Digital Nomad – Ian currently splits his time between Leeds in the UK and Malaga in Spain. Having a lot of experience working remotely in previous industries, this leap didn't impede on his work in any way. [07:15] What other Standards has Ian worked with? – He has assisted with ISO 44001 (Collaborative Business Management), but admittedly it was not his favorite ISO Standard to work with. It's one of the rare instances in ISO where the Standard doesn't quite align with others. [08:00] What Sectors has Ian worked in – Ian's extensive work history has afforded him the opportunity to work in a number of sectors, including: ·      Construction and Fit out ·      Manufacturing ·      Estate Management ·      Private enterprise ·      Healthcare / NHS ·      Facilities With this list growing at a rapid pace since his introduction at Blackmores! [09:45] What's a big challenge that Ian's had to overcome in the past? – In terms of ISO, it has to be Leadership. Ian's found that to always be an issue within businesses attempting to implement ISO Standards. A good looking Management System will only go so far without leadership commitment. While working in facilitating Standards for an organisation, you won't be implementing the whole system yourself. It's more a case of delivering through others, the organisation controls and delivers their own processes and improvements, and so it's imperative that Leadership are also embedding and encouraging these actions. Ian will be going more in-depth on this topic in a future episode. If you'd like to book a demo for the isologyhub, simply contact us and we'd be happy to give you a tour. In this episode, we are delighted to be joined in conversation by Jenny Body CBE. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at Aerospace Bristol on the morning of our annual awards ceremony on the 13th of October this year. The recording was made almost within touching distance of Concorde, an aircraft that Jenny had the privilege of working on some years ago.Jenny Body is a British Aerospace engineer and former President (the first ever woman to hold this post) of the  Royal Aeronautical Society. Jenny grew up in rural Gloucestershire; her father was an aerospace engineer, and her mum worked hard to qualify as a dispensing chemist. Growing up, Jenny was naturally good at maths/physics but also developed a passion for English, which still stays with her to this day. Told by her headteacher that engineering was "not a suitable career for a young woman", she thankfully ignored this advice and, throughout her career, has worked to demonstrate that gender should be no barrier to progression in her chosen profession. Working in the avionics group at British Aerospace, Jenny was part of the team that generated some of the first 'fly by wire' software. She established and led the Next Generation Composite Wing Programme, one of the most extensive and expensive research programmes in the history of British Aerospace. In 2002 Jenny was made engineering lead on the Nimrod wing design team. In 2013, Jenny became the first female President of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Whilst she very humbly places this in our conversation, this was hugely significant as not only her gender was in play here, but also her route to this role and the fact that she came from a civilian background and not through the RAF, where many of the previous holders of this post had graduated from.  Already an OBE. Jenny was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours list this in recognition of her services to aerospace engineering.  This is a fascinating conversation with a groundbreaking engineer as we trace her journey from school to working with government to secure funding and lead a huge engineering team to advance British Aerospace. So sit back, grab an hour to yourself and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Jenny Body CBE.

Frontline IB: Conversations With International Business Scholars

Cristina B. Gibson is Dean's Distinguished Professor of Management in the Applied Behavioral Science group at Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business, Pepperdine University. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, American Psychological Association, and Academy of Social Science Australia. Cristina is an expert on inclusion, technology-enabled collaboration and innovation, and corporate-community partnerships. She works at the nexus of organizational science, international management, and cross-cultural psychology. Her work gives voice to those with differing approaches, perspectives and knowledge, and provides evidence regarding practical techniques for acknowledging, celebrating and bridging differences that coincide with ethnicity, national culture, functional disciplines, and value systems. Cristina also addresses the manner in which culture, organizational structures, and technology serve as key influences on shared use of information and knowledge, and she has demonstrated that such processes are critical for subsequent behavioral and organizational outcomes, including innovation and collaboration.  Dispelling conventional assumptions that collaborative phenomena operate the same way across contexts, her work identifies intercultural variations, impacts of geographical dispersion, and technology factors that are important in gaining a full understanding of how to increase the effectiveness of collaborations. Cristina strives for real world impact.  For three consecutive years she has been awarded the Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Distinction, indicating that she is among the top 1% in the world in terms of impact in the fields of Economic and Business based on citation counts.  This award is an honor reserved for only 95 academics in this discipline across the world. Cristina's other work has informed organizational policy, structure, training and development agendas improving operational efficiency, innovation, resource allocation, and well-being, in non-profits, entrepreneurial firms, and large multinationals such as IBM, HP, Oracle, General Motors, Johnson & Johnson, British Aerospace, Alcoa, Qantas and Westpac, across 30 countries. Carolyn: His podcast is Break Fix. Thanks for being here, Eric, and we're super excited to talk to you today. Eric: That's right, folks. It's not uncommon to see IT branding plastered across the side of race cars in many motor sports disciplines. Names like AWS, CrowdStrike, and SailPoint immediately come to mind. But for application performance monitoring and artificial intelligence, the relationship between technology and racing goes far beyond stickers and sponsorship dollars. As Carolyn pointed out, this is a crossover episode between Break Fix and Tech Transforms. I'd like to personally thank Mark and Carolyn for having us on their show to explore this idea. Carolyn: It's a little bit geeked out for me, so let's just get really basic. Talk about cars and racing first. Tell me how you got into cars and racing in general. Eric: I'll keep it brief because I think that could be a whole episode into itself. Gran Touring Motorsports was founded in late 2013, officially 2014. Our mantra is to continue to spread motorsports enthusiasm. The idea is that people understand that there's multiple disciplines to racing. Racing is a big part of our world, whether you believe it or not. The chemistry, the science, the technology, the engineering that trickles down into your daily car is incredible. It all stems from manufacturers using the racetrack as their test center. Think about it from that perspective. Here at GTM, we want to continue to spread that enthusiasm because if we don't, racing will dry up.Tied Into the Racing CommunityEric: That advancement in technology ceases to exist. We've been around now for almost eight years. We have our own podcast, Break Fix, we talk about all sorts of different things. Ranging from these super technical episodes, all the way up to advice episodes. Like, what should I buy, and things of that nature. Personally, I got into cars by way of genetics. From my grandfather to my dad, and to me. Hopefully I get to pass it onto my daughters along the way. We've been tied into the racing community for a very long time. I've been a high-performance driving instructor for almost a decade. Before autocrossing, I was a cart racer nationally. It's unfortunately in the blood. What I find most interesting about it is that there's a huge intersection between the automotive and the IT world. I also followed in my father's footsteps, who was a mainframe programmer. I've had the IT side, and also the racing side. As a younger racer, I was involved in things like timing and scoring. I went to work for British Aerospace, where I tried desperately to get in on their helicopter division. Because I was actually working on engine management systems at another company. So, data, technology, IT, racing, it's all very intertwined. As I grew more into ProAm racing, time trials, and other disciplines, I started to realize how valuable the data that we collect. Not just from the cars, from the track, and from the motors and all this stuff related to what I was doing in the SIM and threat intelligence world and also in the APM and artificial intelligence space. There's this huge crossover there. I want to be...

In episode 156 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering the importance of rigorous debate, focusing once again on post-production manipulation controversy and reflecting on the importance of honesty in photography. Plus this week photographer Benedict Redgrove takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Born in 1969 near Reading, England and attended the Berkshire College of Art and Design. Redgrove is a graphic designer by trade, and has spent his career “obsessing” over technology and innovation. As a photographer, he has cut his teeth photographing campaigns and editorials for clients such as BMW, Audi, Aston Martin, British Airways, IBM, Sky, Sony and T-Mobile. However, his love of sci-fi and space exploration has intuitively led him to creating personal projects based on his client base of the most advanced companies in the world, granting him access to secret and often hidden divisions at organisations such as Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence, the Royal Air Force, European Space Agency, British Aerospace and NASA. The story of the rapid expansions and retrenchments in our industry are explored by Ron Smith’s investigation into the six phases of the British industry after the Wright Brothers first flew in 1903. Starting with the period of exciting experimentation before 1914, Dr Smith gives us a snapshot of the major firms that were part of the industry in 1910. He then moves onto the second stage, the rapid developments brought World War I and gives a flavour of the larger and more diverse companies that made aeroplanes during the period. Smith goes onto discusses the deep retrenchment after 1918, a period where manufacturers had to diversify and compete for each requirement issued by Government, and which led to the first phase of rationalisation in 1928 and 1934-35. The fourth phase looks at the increase in production brought about the preparations and then fighting the Second Wold War. Smith concludes by briefly looking at the industry up to the second period of rationalisation of the industry, with the formation of the British Aircraft Corporation & Hawker Siddeley, and then modern times with the establishment of British Aerospace and beyond. These last two sections of the lecture were bolstered by the question and answer sessions, which prompts questions and comments from those who worked and shaped post-war projects. Dr Ron Smith gave the lecture to the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group on 2 February 2004. The podcast was edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS and it was digitised thanks to a grant from the Royal Aeronautical Society Foundation.

Aerospace Engineering Podcast

Oliver Family is the Overall Aircraft Design Leader of the Airbus E-Fan X demonstrator. The E-Fan X is a hybrid-electric technology demonstrator being developed by Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens based on a British Aerospace 146 regional airliner. The driver behind the E-Fan X demonstrator is that current aircraft designs have converged to a near-optimum, and with existing technologies, it is difficult to meet the stringent sustainability goals in terms of CO2/NOX emissions and reductions in noise. New technologies, such as electrification, are therefore required to achieve these goals. As we have seen on other episodes of the podcast, electrification of aircraft is currently a hot topic with new start-up companies promising to disrupt and revolutionise the regional aircraft market. In this environment, one may assume that incumbents like Airbus are too slow to react to a changing technology landscape. As you will hear in this episode, nothing could be further from the truth. The E-Fan X project is structured as a separate entity within Airbus with the explicit mission of challenging Airbus’ legacy business. As you will hear, the consequences of integrating an electric propulsion system on a regional aircraft run much deeper than mere calculations about battery power density and battery longevity. In fact, it's the secondary effects that we rarely think, hear and read about, such as thermal management of batteries; the interaction between pilots and new control systems; and the challenges of new certification protocols, that are especially challenging. So in this episode, Oliver and I discuss: what exactly the E-Fan X demonstrator aims to achieve the main technical and economic challenges of electric aircraft and how electrification widens the design envelope for engineers If you enjoy the Aerospace Engineering Podcast you can support it by leaving a review on iTunes or by supporting it directly on Patreon, where patrons of the podcast receive exclusive behind-the-scenes content and special episodes. The Discussion: In this Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy contrived episode we look back over the movie The Martian, meeting Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, we gloss over the Bayesian statistics in Jen’s data analysis work and hear about a mathematics-based nightmare that’s been keeping Jen awake but should have mathematicians rolling in the aisles! The News: This month we revisit that alien megastructure around a distant star with an unusual light curve and reveal what alien signatures SETI have discovered. We take a look at the possible future of cheap access to space as British Aerospace buy a stake in the SABRE engine designed to power spaceplanes of the future, and we finish off with the truly incredible measurements of Mars atmosphere conducted by NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft to reveal how much atmosphere Mars is losing on an annual basis. The Interview: This month we wrap the whole show around our interview with Apollo 15 Command Module Pilot Al Worden recorded at this year’s Cosmiccon. We discuss: Anecdotes from test pilot school in England Tales of the Harrier and Concorde test pilots Practical jokes Riding a Saturn V rocket Finding organic matter in lunar orbit Views from 1.5 miles above the mountains of the moon The history of the moon and the Apollo 15 landing site, Hadley Rille The bliss of being alone in lunar orbit The views of space from the far and dark portions behind the moon The vastness of the universe Al Worden's view on UFOs, ancient aliens, numerology and the bible How to explore further out in space The stupidity of the design of NASA's next generation spacecraft The 5 Minute Concept: We continue our series of back to basics 5 Minute Concepts as Paul takes a look at perhaps the most important piece of hardware in amateur astronomy – no, not the telescope itself, but the mount. As we ask AZ or EQ? Q&A: Listeners’ questions via email, Facebook & Twitter take us on a journey into the astronomy issues that have always plagued our understanding or stretched our credulity. This month Jen honours the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s General Relativity with a beginner’s crash course, a bit of mythbusting and answers: What’s inside a black hole? The past five years have seen the use of graphical processing units for computation grow from being the interest of handful of early adopters to a mainstream technology used in the world’s largest supercomputers. The CUDA GPU programming ecosystem today provides all that a developer needs to accelerate scientific applications with GPUs. The architecture of a GPU has much to offer to the future of large-scale computing where energy-efficiency is paramount. NVIDIA is the lead contractor for the DARPA-funded Echelon project investigating efficient parallel computer architectures for the exascale era. Timothy Lanfear is a Solution Architect in NVIDIA’s Professional Solutions Group, promoting the use of the NVIDIA Tesla(TM) computing solution for high-performance computing. He has twenty years’ experience in HPC, starting as a computational scientist in British Aerospace’s corporate research centre, and then moving to technical pre-sales roles with Hitachi, ClearSpeed, and most recently NVIDIA. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and a PhD for research in the field of graph theory, both from Imperial College London.
