GHIT 307: Race Weekend Recap: The Entire Team From Lucky Dog Racing at CMP You have only heard a few of the stories from our Lucky Dog race at Carolina Motorsports Park a few weeks ago. Now we unveil the entire team that went to the race. Car owner David as well as the rest of the team including Alex, Ryan, and Matt. We think we have determined the root cause of the problem we had at the race and a path forward. As always, we all had a great time at the Lucky Dog event and cannot wait to return. There was a bit of feedback initially that sounds like a duck quacking but it ends fairly quickly and we are blaming Alex, lol. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode include: 1) We start with the important stuff: who wins the snoring award for the weekend? 2) What we did, what we brought, what happened, and how we ended up. 3) What it is like to assemble a new team from several other teams and how the weekend went, what we learned and what we can learn from this weekend. 4) Our individual thoughts on how the "new to us" car behaved on its maiden voyage to endurance racing and what we each thought of the E36 BMW. Ryan and Alex are long time endurance racers, primarily in the Miata platform. Bill has driven the E36 platform many times but had not been to the CMP track until this weekend. David had also not been on CMP as well. 5) We spend way more time discussing the teams qualifying session than the session actually took. This is called foreshadowing. 6) We then have a recovery/repair plan and get started the race Saturday. Then we go into detail of the entire 8 hour race Saturday. 7) Now the fun begins, as well as the work project for the weekend. Ryan got a ton of really solid shoulder work welding above his head. The post incident CSI that we conduct and summarize also takes more time than our racing laps did in total. Perhaps the first reference of a brake caliper making sweet, sweet love to the rear suspension. 8) We did allow him to rest a bit by welding a friends team shifter that had failed (again). It should be problem solved from here. 9) The details of our parts search and repair program to get the car back on track ASAP or at least for Sunday. 10) We also have a short example of Podcast In Training that couldn't be edited out for your personal enjoyment. 11) Even with a combination of team members with decades of racing experience, there is often growing pains in coming together as a team and operating smoothly and efficiently. 12) With everything going on at a race weekend, we each learned several details of how the race weekend went and how several 13) After a brief trip off the rails, we eventually get to "Oh God, it sings" and we eventually get back to our story. Herding kittens. 14) We have the beginnings of a recovery plan and then (a bit late) cover our roles and skills for and within the team. The importance of roles and areas of responsibilities is so key to the performance of a racing team, it cannot be overstated. 15) Apparently there will be a Cubano vs Meatball cook off. Book your spots early if you want to be a judge. Spots are limited. 16) Ryan shares his parts transport system and Vicki is dumbfounded. Bill has a new project. 17) An accounting of what we did vs what we should have done and what we will do at the next race. Special thanks again to Kyle Lockrow and Giggles for their help in making the results of this debacle a bit better.
GHIT 302: Race Weekend Recap: Lucky Dog Racing at CMP After a series of failed intros, Bill is interrogated tonight about how the race weekend went with Skunk Oil Racing. It was quite a weekend and some hardware was taken home from the track. As always, Cathy and the Lucky Dog family had a superb event and we were honored to work on our car in their garage all weekend, lol. This is our fourth race with Lucky Dog and we wish we had raced more. If you haven't tried a Lucky Dog race, you really should. This was a big weekend and we will have several other episodes where we review the race with other cars and other teams from the event. Cathy Fuss - Lucky Dog Racing - Racing is and always will remain, cool as hell. Cathy Fuss must be hella cool, cuz she puts people on tracks racing wheel to wheel on some of the US's most desirable tracks. Her racing league is called and it allows teams to build and race their own cars; really, anyone can get into this and it doesn't cost a fortune. Pete A Turner and Cathy go back a number of years. They've raced at the same tracks and worked the same events. What's great about this episode is friends are talking about how much they love racing, getting their friends on the track and the challenges that come with endurance wheel to wheel racing. Erik Torgeson and Chris Wilhelm joined us to talk about their racing history and the Lucky Dog racing series. Erik is the Director of Operations and runs the Dog Pound penalty area during the races. Chris is the head of vehicle safety and technical inspection as well as usually covering radio control and timing and scoring during the Lucky Dog races. Erik is also known as Bulldog while Chris is the Junk Yard Dog (JYD). In addition, we go into the upcoming race (hopefully) at the Charlotte Roval where Lucky Dog comes to the east coast for the first time. We cannot wait to go to another Lucky Dog race and we found a few items we will need to add to our list to pass tech for Lucky Dog, as well as several of the differences between Lucky Dog and the 24 Hours of Lemons series we traditionally race in on the east coast. You can find Erik and Chris and the entire racing series at www.racelucky.com and say hello for us please if you see them a the races. Apex of Failure on Facebook for the RX-8 project Erik referred to. On Dominating with Dawson, Ben covers several of the racing lines and approaches to circumventing a racetrack in the most expeditious manner. We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) Bill apologizes for his pit lane violation at Laguna Seca by not stopping for his egg timer. 2) Vicki points out that we did not review the rules prior to the last race. This is not best practice. Perhaps her interpretation of the goal of the pit lane timer was a bit off, as well as her not attending tech inspection led to a good discussion of the safety practices for the Lucky Dog Series. 3) Why Lucky Dog has elected to use pit lane timers and why they chose to use window nets, as well as many of the key inspection points prior to a race, along with several of the key differences between the safety requirements of Lucky Dog and several of the other racing series. 4) Alan steals our Lucky Dog branded Hankook RS4 tires for his daily to "test" them, lol. 5) We also go into the importance of the attitude of the Lucky Dog series and how it magnifies the fun of the racing weekend. 6) A lot of the details related to the upcoming race in Charlotte. 7) Our to do list is adding in dash bars into two cars and window nets into one. We are planning on bringing three cars and have an undetermined number of drivers since it is difficult to firmly plan with everything going on currently. 8) Erik and Chris should get Lucky Dog style trophies to represent their Lucky Dog names. 9) Both Erik and Chris have a history of racing that includes autocross as well as their start with working with a series in ChampCar. 10) Chris goes into the excellence of a Ford Fairlane in autocross. 11) Erik sends out a non-controversial message to auto crossers. Please send you comments to GarageHeroesInTraining@gmail.com and we will forward them to Erik for you. 12) We discuss the upcoming season and the uncertainty still within the system, especially with the different states and tracks involved. 13) How racing is not only tremendously fun but also generates great friendships that can last many lifetimes. 14) Car 196 may yet live on in the upcoming Charlotte Roval! (But in a new form) We also discuss our mutual history with them in Lucky Dogs. It turns out it may not all be our fault after all. But it likely was. 15) Erik sends out a non-controversial message related to Honda-based race cars. Please send you comments to GarageHeroesInTraining@gmail.com and we will forward them to Erik for you. 16) Vicki sets a new record for the number of edits when going into her Laguna Seca experience. This one will be tough to beat. 17) Bill reminisces about her services of the car at Laguna for Mental. It reminds one of the second autopilot scene from "Airplane". 18) Probably two of the worst, and potentially scariest, "Ugly" story we have heard in a while. Some people can be very scary when under the red midst. Bill couldn't help but make another "entrepreneur" joke from the recent YouTube and Facebook racing kerfuffle with a different, but perhaps related drivers. (THESE "DRIVERS" ARE FAR FAR FAR FROM TYPICAL) 19) Alan gets offended that Erik has the title of "Black Flag Guy" but it is for a totally different reason than he originally thought. Alan's version of the title is still intact. Unfortunately. 20) Some of the key differences and details that are needed for the Charlotte race. 21) Race Invaders gets a shout out. We are long overdue for having you on. 22) Both Erik and Chris agree that ORP (Oregon Raceway Park) is there favorite track. We are adding it to our list. Now, how do we get a car onto the west coast? New project!
Cathy McCause Fuss of the Lucky Dog racing series returns for the 8th or 9th time. Unfortunately, only one episode has ever been published due to connection errors and other computer issues. Why she puts up with us, we don't know, perhaps it's because she is one of the best people we have met since we started racing. During this episode, we go over a lot of the Cathy's history and her perspective of racing from the Series perspective. We also get into her thoughts of how racing and endurance racing are progressing and helping to grow our sport. On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, Ben goes over what is an "Arrive and Drive" and the details of racing in that situation. We go over a lot of the options, concerns, and advantages of being an arrive and drive driver, as well as being the team renting to the arrive and driver. We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) Bill felt like he was going down the hill into turn 12 at Road Atlanta when Cathy's connection went robot a few seconds in. 2) What the impact of the COVID 19 has been so far and speculative hopes and expectations for the rest of the season. 3) the Lucky Dog i-Racing league and it sponsored, you can even win race entries, and other racing supplies from the Lucky Dog sponsors 4) We develop the exchange rate between Clairol hair color and Hankook RS4's. 5) We go into the process of working with the tracks, rescheduling, and the potential impact of the current COVID 19 related impact and issues on the tracks and the series, and the drivers, as well as some of the amazing steps Cathy and Lucky Dog have done to help the overall racing population, including paying 2021 track rental fees. 6) Bill shamelessly plugs the upcoming Lucky Dog race at Charlotte in mid-August. 7) Cathy threatens us with bringing the 196 car out to the race for us. We much rather like her alternative bonfire idea. 8) How several members of the Lucky Dog racing community, and the overall low cost endurance racing community, have helped in dealing with the COVID 19 pandemic. 9) We brainstorm a bit, well really a mild drizzle, on what options we can come up with to help save the 2020 racing season 10) Bill apologizes for his black flag digression earlier this year at the Lucky Dog race at Laguna Seca in January 11) Cathy even was kind enough to go through our "Usual Suspects" but this time from a race series perspective and how her series has progressed through Miatas, into BMWs, and recently into Hondas and several Fords. 12) Self ejecting starters as a way to save weight 13) Speed creep and its concern as we progress to including more modern cars where horsepower increases seem easier and easier, especially with all the recent time people may have had with the stay at home orders. 14) Cathy's strategy for classing cars in Lucky Dog and addressing the variability in car and even individual driver capability. 15) As expected, we eventually reviewed or last race at Laguna Seca and our other Lucky Dog race in Portland. 16) Brakes and brake pads were a big discussion point. One way to get to a faster lap is to be able to slow down even faster. Hopefully, we have an upcoming guest from Hawk on the show. 17) Hilarity ensued when we started talking about the spares being brought to the track. 18) Rally Dogs? And yes, we had an East coast rally dog volunteer. 19) Also, a rookie time attack challenge option came into being. 20) How Lucky Dog is working to partner with the local Club racing, especially for the HPDE and learning aspects, hopefully raising the tide for all. 21) How our team has been invaded by two of the drivers we know from Lucky Dog 22) Opportunities for arrive and drives at the Charlotte race abound with teams and drivers looking to come east for the race. 23) How the Lucky Dog racing series came to be. 24) Cathy fears answering what car she would love to start with as a race car. 25) How Lucky Dog's i-Racing league is helping racers scratch their itch. 26) She is still looking for the known unknown E46 Greg has hidden. Somewhere. 27) There seems to be a potential for an east coast west coast race car exchange program. Greg, Call us!
