I was thrilled to have Lucy Wallace, the founder of Dance to be Free, as a guest. I strongly support her mission of bringing dance to incarcerated women to help heal trauma. I share a little about my own experience growing up with a father who was in prison and my own volunteer work teaching kids in an orphanage in Nepal so they could teach their peers. This coincides with Lucy's program, as she identifies the importance of the teacher training program for the prisoners rather so they can continue to help people instead of going in to “save” them.  In addition, we talk about how this mission found her and unfolded with dedication despite all of the bureaucracy inside the prison system and how this transformative program has grown into over 15 prisons nationally. We also explore a variety of other topics that align with Lucy's work and her program including how trust is earned, holding space versus preaching, and how freedom is a perception and state of mind.   We end the episode with a practice Lucy uses with her students that you can also use.

We are featuring this as part of our February, 'Causes We Love' series, which spotlights people and charitable giving that Lee Harris Energy supports throughout the year. Dance to Be Free is a non-profit organization whose mission is to radically improve the lives of incarcerated women through the healing power of dance. Originally released in July 2020, this is an encore show. Lucy Wallace is a Boulder-based dance instructor who founded this incredible program. With a Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology, she designs her high energy classes to help women move and feel safe in their bodies again. To empower women and promote further healing, she also leads teacher trainings to keep prison programs sustainable. In this episode, Lee and Lucy share an honest, heartfelt conversation about her journey, how to be a disruptive force for good and white privilege. She speaks to why she feels an even deeper calling to bring her work to the South and despite the steep learning curve of heading up a non-profit organization, her answer is always, "Why wouldn't I do it?" Her wit, big heart, and advocacy for this traumatized population will leave you inspired and reminded that when we become activated by our passion and purpose, there is no reason NOT to do it! We are starting off our Philanthropy month with Lucy Wallace, The Founder of Dance to Be Free.  As a life-long dancer and student of psychology, Lucy got the idea to start teaching dance to the women’s prison population in Denver in  the Spring of 2015 and was teaching inside by July 2015.  We talked about the genesis of her idea and how, when she began, we was the only non-faith based volunteer group in the women’s prison system and how her experiences led her to expand her program after only 6 months to not only teach, but to teach inmates to become teachers themselves under the guise of offender-led programming.  We talked about remembering the humanity in the women behind bars and her mission to help women heal from trauma through body-based healing.  We also got into some personal and poignant examples of some of the women she has helped heal from both personal and ancestral trauma, finding their worthiness and innate leadership skills and empowering them to pay it forward in the prison community and beyond. As Lucy puts so well, “ It’s about catharsis and regaining control, not calories.” We also talk about the challenges of starting and running a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, the collective encouragement she has received both inside and outside the prison system, and how her self care is “coming back to the magic” of working with the women inside. Lastly we touch upon how she is attempting to expand her focus into jails such as the infamous Rikers Island facility in New York City.   Additional Resources:“Dance, when you're broken open. Dance, if you've torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you're perfectly free.”- RUMI Sia - Never Give Up (from the Lion Soundtrack) [Lyric Video] Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter A. Lord of The Dance by The Dubliners https://youtu.be/OjPGSFDy8wo Time: The Kalief Browder Story on Netflix https://g.co/kgs/jCTtdB “6 in 10 women are in federal prison for nonviolent drug crimes. For every woman who has committed murder, there are 99 drug offenders.” – Amos Irwin Chief of Staff at the Criminal Justice Policy Foundation   Guest Bio:Since Lucy was 8 years old, she has been dancing. In 2010 she bought a Boulder based dance studio after receiving her master’s degree in Psychology. Her psychology background led to the birth of Dance To Be Free due to the therapeutic and cathartic quality of her teaching style. As one student shared: “Wallace is a gifted and compassionate teacher whose style is vocal and impassioned, raunchy and raw, while simultaneously elegant and fluid. To be in one of her classes (I have attended classes at the studio) is to be both vulnerable and strong, to have fun and push oneself physically, to feel what one feels, and to move about it. Imagine how powerful that could be for incarcerated women.” Jane Perle Lucy has been invited to speak at several speaking engagements including Emerging Women and the first ever live streamed Tedx Talk at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women. Her work is spreading and catching on throughout the prison industrial complex. Charity Highlight:  Dance to Be Free Dance To Be Free: Home Our mission is to radically improve the lives of incarcerated women through the healing power of dance. We use “Cathartic Choreography” to train our students to teach each other – allowing them to sustain the program themselves. We have seen this technique help our students deal with physical and mental illness, including PTSD and complex trauma.  Our “Offender led ” programming gives our students confidence. That sense of accomplishment flourishes as our students learn to not only express themselves through dance, but to free others to do the same. Throughout this transformative experience, we teach the nuts and bolts of choreography, timing and flow, and just as importantly we facilitate journaling and sharing exercises that nurture introspection and self-awareness that inmates often need.

What do "Orange Is the New Black," Depeche Mode, Buddha and dance have in common? Our newest guest, Lucy Wallace! This remarkable woman is the founder of Dance to be Free, an organization that aims to radically impact the lives of incarcerated women through the healing power of dance. In this fascinating discussion, Lucy talks to Courtney about her seemingly serendipitous journey from dancer, to dance teacher, to discovering unique ways of healing through dance. With a focus on working with incarcerated women, some committed to a lifetime of imprisonment, Wallace's organization takes the art form directly to prisons across the country and creates engaging experiences through a trauma-informed lens. It's through that framework, and taking inspiration from Tennessee-based clinician and researcher Dr. Bruce Perry's "six r's of healing trauma," that Dance to be Free leans into the therapeutic nature of rhythm. The goal, Wallace notes, is to create opportunities for program participants to process moments in their lives through creative writing, community discussion and dance, and develop a healing space through the arts. What is the process like? You'll have to listen to the episode to find out!

When Monica Zwirner and Lucy Wallace Eustice joined forces to start their own company in 2000, they were on a mission to create beautiful, functional, luxury bags. After carefully sourcing their materials and manufacturers, the pair chose to launch their brand, MZ Wallace, by opening and operating a store, which in turn gave them direct access to the customers and their feedback. Just a few short years later, in 2004, the brand launched its e-commerce operation, continuing to operate as a direct-to-consumer brand years before the concept became buzzy. Now, almost 20 years later, MZ Wallace is continuing to build on its direct roots. It now gets customer feedback largely from Facebook, versus face-to-face; it still believes in brand transparency; and it's kept physical retail a central component of the business. On this week's episode of The Glossy Podcast, Hilary Milnes sits down with Wallace Eustice to discuss how MZ Wallace has evolved since 2000, why the brand won't be sold anytime soon and how technology has impacted the larger fashion industry.

I wanted them to be bright.” At 7:15, Ali says: “The only place on my body that hasn’t chafed is the little wrinkles in my forehead… The most emotional part of running is the post-run shower.” At 11:10, Ali says: “I woke up one morning in ninth grade and after all those years of wishing on the first star I see at night for boobs, I got them. Literally overnight.” At 15:10, Lucy says: “Shout-out to my dad for paying for my cell phone.” At 16:00, Ali says: “This seems like a good pre-race dinner because it only cost $1.99!” At 17:55, Lucy says: “I’m doing a service to this race course by listening to Justin Bieber’s entire Purpose album right now.” Things We Mention on the Show: Lucy on Episode 12 of the Ali on the Run Show: 10 Thoughts From Our First Half Marathons: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/12-thoughts-we-had-during-our-first-half-marathons/id1204523870?i=1000382902143&mt=2 November Project: http://november-project.com/ Body Glide: https://www.bodyglide.com/ SPIbelt: https://spibelt.com/ Follow Lucy: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lucemagoose16 Follow Ali: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aliontherun1 Twitter: https://twitter.com/aliontherun1 Blog: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/ Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/13333410 Thank you for listening to and supporting the Ali on the Run Show! I did not do that.” At 11:25, Lucy says: “It is impossible to be lying on the ground at mile 10 of your first half marathon and then jump back into the race and expect to just be flying as you were all the way to the finish. It was painful. It was a struggle. I’m surprised actually and kind of offended the medics didn’t come over to look at me while I was in the grass on the side of the road. Don’t do yoga in the middle of a half marathon.” At 12:30, Ali says: “I’m broken, I’m walking, it’s hot, I’m dying, everything hurts, this was terrible.” At 13:50, Lucy says: “I’m broken.
