We know that the mind and body are connected, but how do we use that knowledge to create our best life? This week, host Paula Felps is talking with Dr Greg Hammer, a Stanford University School of Medicine professor, physician, and a mindfulness expert who developed the four-step GAIN method of mindfulness. As he explains in his book, GAIN without Pain, this is an acronym for Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention and Nonjudgement. He teaches this method to reduce stress and increase well-being, and in this episode he talks about how we can learn to live with intention. In this episode, you'll learn: What it means to live an intentional life. How intentional living can change your brain—and your life. The connection between your physical and mental health.
Please welcome to our show Dr. Greg Hammer, physician, Stanford professor, and author, “Gain Without Pain,” a “happiness” handbook for health care professionals and the rest of us to learn valuable tools to guide us to our happy in life. Happiness has a different meaning for all of us, and Dr. Hammer first talks about GAIN - Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention, Non-Judgement, and how to begin each day with this in mind. It might sound cliche, but it's not. Being grateful, meditating, sleeping, exercise, and setting aside time each day to do it, matters. It's about setting a routine and sticking with it, and we talk about how to get motivated to do that. And there's more. Please join us on all video and audio platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, please invite your friends, too. I hope you enjoy our program.
It's in our nature to judge others and ourselves. And while judging is often useful while making our way through the world, it can also become toxic and isolating. When we judge others too much, we separate ourselves and build obstacles towards deep connection. Today's meditation focuses on cultivating acceptance and practicing non-judgment.
Ep- # 225 - An Interview with Dr. Greg Hammer, Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, Mindfulness Expert and Author of GAIN without Pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to interview this guest for my podcast. I am enchanted and thrilled to welcome Dr. Greg Hammer to this Empowering Chat. Greg is a Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and wears many hats. He is not only a medical professional in the field of pediatrics, he is also a mindfulness expert and the author of GAIN without Pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals. Greg began his journey into medicine by following his grander interest in the relationship between the very small and the very large. His philosophy of seeing life through the lens of connection carried him into studying or “seeing” the human body in the same way. The larger vessel being our body with the smallest particle being the sub-cellular organs that make up these cells, tissues and organs that create the whole of the human body. This is what led him to medical school. Greg likes being forced to think on his feet and marrying his mindfulness practice with western medicine. He has brought together the truth of his being with his knowledge of medicine. He approaches all his patients with compassion and presence. He wants to get to know his patients on a “human” level because this is who he is and how he feels compelled to be when helping his patients with their health issues. And he doesn't shy away from introducing the mindfulness and spiritual practice to his colleague and to his patients. The 4 Pillars of the GAIN Method are: Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention and Non-Judgement. The GAIN Method was developed by Greg to help people combat negative thoughts and re-wire the brain with daily practice. They are simple tools and just 3-minutes a day of practice can make a real difference. The GAIN Method is not just for healthcare professionals, it can help anyone who is seeking to overcome anxiety or stress in their daily life. Greg offers easy tools in his book and ways to live. In this lecture, we do a lot of philosophical work to show, at least for the sake of theoretical understanding, that everything you see in this world is nothing but Consciousness. From this, we come away with three insights:1. To judge, criticize or resent anyone is to judge, criticize and resent God.2. To serve and help anyone is really an act of worship to God. 3. You yourself are God so you have infinite strength and potential to do anything, including overcoming #1 and doing #2 above! Of course, this is the central teaching of the Ramakrishna movement: "shiva jnane, jiva seva": knowing that everyone is Shiva, serve them as an act of worship. In this lecture, we explore the metaphysical foundation for such a teaching in light of the insights of Paramadvaya Vada, or Kashmir Shaivism. Here is an abstract of what was discussed:What is Consciousness? None other than your very own Being, your own essence. Consciousness is You! And also, because of its Transcendent nature and its innate Freedom, Consciousness is God. Wait a minute! Doesn't that mean...you are God? Yes! Absolutely, yes! But of course here in Advaita Vedanta, or Classical Non-Duality the God that you are is the Impersonal God, Brahman without Attributes. What about the Personal God who creates, maintains and destroys? Non-Dual Shaivism, in its radically reconciliatory attitude shows that the Impersonal God is also the Personal God and such, Consciousness/You is/are also, like the Personal God, performing all the divine acts of God: creation, maintenance, destruction, self-revelation/grace, self-concealment/judgement. You can never be parted from God because you ARE God, in both the passive and dynamic aspects! But then why don't I have any control over what happens to me? Ah, because God is Consciousness and Consciousness is distinct. from and prior to the mind which is where our preferences live! Naturally, then, the preferences of our mind and our inability to exercise personal will to meet them is not a rebuttal against our essential nature as Consciousness, God, who wills sometimes independently of the mind in a spirit of play! In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour, we welcome Stanford School of Medicine professor, physician, best-selling author, mindfulness expert, and innovator of the GAIN method, Greg Hammer, MD. Join us as Dr. Hammer shares wisdom to GAIN Keys to Nonjudgment and discover the life-enhancing rewards that begin to arise in your life. Most of us admirably strive to be “nonjudgmental” towards others. Coming from a place of nonjudgment allows us to see the best in others without letting our own biases get in the way. However, in order to become less judgmental, we need to change how we think about ourselves and the world around us. Dr. Hammer illustrates how we often make quick judgments every day about everything we see and put these things into categories, such as healthy/ unhealthy, affordable/ expensive, and good/ bad. And how much more often do we make judgments about ourselves?Discover the many benefits of nonjudgement, tips for implementing it into your life and learn how mindfulness, or living in the present moment, gives us the space to practice nonjudgment. First, we acknowledge how often we judge and that it is not necessary to judge. Then we can practice living in the present and accepting the world, ourselves, and others as they are. It's an enlightening hour from beginning to end as we learn about the benefits of nonjudgement, the problems that arise from judgement and realize how simple tactics of mindfulness can lead the way to a healthier and happier life.Greg Hammer, MD is a Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, pediatric intensive care physician, pediatric anesthesiologist, mindfulness expert, and the author of GAIN without Pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals. A member of the Stanford WellMD initiative, Dr. Hammer is currently the Chair of the Physician Wellness Task Force for the California Society of Anesthesiologists. He has been a visiting professor and lecturer on wellness at institutions worldwide and teaches GAIN to medical students, residents, and fellows at Stanford. Dr. Hammer's clinical focus is in pediatric cardiac anesthesia and pediatric critical care medicine. His research is in developmental pharmacology and immunology, and he has an active laboratory with multiple ongoing studies in these areas. He has published widely on topics related to pharmacology and perioperative care of children undergoing cardiac and thoracic procedures as well as organ transplantation. I was thrilled to have Lucy Wallace, the founder of Dance to be Free, as a guest. I strongly support her mission of bringing dance to incarcerated women to help heal trauma. I share a little about my own experience growing up with a father who was in prison and my own volunteer work teaching kids in an orphanage in Nepal so they could teach their peers. This coincides with Lucy's program, as she identifies the importance of the teacher training program for the prisoners rather so they can continue to help people instead of going in to “save” them. In addition, we talk about how this mission found her and unfolded with dedication despite all of the bureaucracy inside the prison system and how this transformative program has grown into over 15 prisons nationally. We also explore a variety of other topics that align with Lucy's work and her program including how trust is earned, holding space versus preaching, and how freedom is a perception and state of mind. We end the episode with a practice Lucy uses with her students that you can also use.

Today's guest is a repeat visitor to Ignite Your Spark. Dr. Greg Hammer was on the podcast last year to talk about his book, The GAIN method, and he's back to share more wisdom with us.Dr. Hammer is a Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, pediatric intensive care physician, pediatric anesthesiologist and mindfulness expert. Dr. Hammer is also the Chair of the Physician Wellness Task Force for the California Society of Anesthesiologists.I really love how Dr. Hammer marries the mind and body for optimal healing. As a mindfulness expert and author on the subject, he knows how important the mind body connection is to assist us in living a more joyful and optimally healthy life.In this conversation we focus on the importance of being non-judgmental. We discuss how prevalent the negativity bias is in our society and how we need to let it go. Through his daily practice, outlined in his book - of Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention and Non-Judgement, we can work to change the neuroplasticity of our brain in order to let go and basically be happier. It is within our power to rewire and reshape the way we think.Dr. Hammer shares his techniques for letting go of judgement and gives us some great examples from his life on how to do just that.Shine on and let go of judgement - you will be glad you did!Dr. Hammer can be found here:www.GregHammerMD.comKim:www.kimduffselby.comInstagram: @kimduffselbykimduffselby@gmail.com
A culture is being set in your family, either consciously or unconsciously. This week we get into how to lead your family's culture with intention, how putting words to your values gives you confidence when other moms do things differently and how we can nurture non-judgmental communities. There's a lot of encouragement packed in - to offer compassion to yourself, cultivate empathy for other parents and hold respectful space for each other as each of us cares for our children the best we can...even when we disagree. We take a listener question about what is effective "discipline" for a one-year-old / young toddler that may (or may not) surprise you :) Join Very Good Mother's Club to be a part of our community and get your questions answered on a future episode! Thanks for listening you base reality junkies. Some final words for the podcast:Going to base reality isn't about ego or no ego, right or wrong, or meditation or knowledge. It's about challenging yourself, looking inward and seeing through the entanglements which distort the proper functioning of your mind.Judgement and Reaction = Losing touch with the way.Non Judgement and Centredness = The pathway to a new reality.Ancient wisdom says, to live an effective life, one needs to realise that it's all on you. That only 1% of guidance comes from the outside and the other 99% comes from within. My speciality: To offer any support I can give in relation to the challenges that newly created technologies bring to the body, mind and society. If that is your field, and you want to connect, I look forward to the honour of speaking with you.Happy Challenging. That's all folks!

We will learn: What judgments prevent us from seeing. How to move from judgment to acceptance in the moment. A daily practice to rewire our brains to judge less overall. Are you judgmental? Be honest. Because frankly, I'm pretty sure we all are. Some more than others. The problem is, our judgments don't just create suffering for other people. Our judgments create the most suffering within ourselves, whether we're judging ourselves or our own past harshly, or we're holding people and the world around us to standards they will never meet. It's our resistance to "what is" that creates our suffering. Always. There will still be pain, but suffering is a choice. And I know, easier said than done. So how do we get there, exactly? That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Greg Hammer, MD. He is a Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, a pediatric intensive care physician, a pediatric anesthesiologist, a mindfulness expert, and the author of GAIN without Pain. He is also a health enthusiast and meditator, utilizing a non-duality and mindfulness-based approach to care. In our work, we often lean on the metaphors of nature. We speak of landscapes, flows, seasons and cycles. And yet often enough, our treatments are geared to interfere with what we find. We look to ‘re-channel' the flow. To drain away that which we deem obstructive. To bust up qi, especially if we find the Liver to be involved. From an outsider's perspective, we seem to have a bad attitude towards the Liver. I often enough have asked myself the question when seeing patients, “Am I working from the perspective of Husbandry or from that of a Corps of Engineers manager?” Am I working with the environment or in some ways against it? In this conversation with Karen Elisa we investigate what it means to attend and follow. Do we listen to what our patient needs, or our own ideas of what they should have? And short, do we trust our patient's body and being, or not? Listen into this conversation on using our hands and senses to attentively follow the body's flow and get out of the way so our patients can allow themselves to bring forward a great state of wellbeing.

This week, our theme is by request from a fellow meditator, Emma from Minnesota. She shares.
