In this episode, Kyle interviews Peter A. Levine, Ph.D.: developer of Somatic Experiencing®, educator, and author of several best-selling books on trauma. His most recent book, An Autobiography of Trauma: A Healing Journey, is exactly that: a change from more scholarly writing into an extremely vulnerable telling of his early childhood trauma and how he has healed over the years. He talks about how his unconscious convinced him to write the book, how trauma can move into the body, and how he needed a student to identify how his trauma was affecting him. He believes that we all have wounding, but it's how we carry these wounds and tell our truth that matters.  He discusses:  The need to allow space for both Indigenous traditions and evidence-based Western frameworks The power of having even just one distinct moment of feeling cared for and loved How Colin Turnbull saw healing differently after living with an African tribe for three years Why he suggests 15-20 sober experiences with non-ordinary states for each drug experience Why not having a community or empathetic other makes us more vulnerable to trauma and more! In An Autobiography of Trauma: A Healing Journey (Park Street Press, 2024), renowned developer of Somatic Experiencing Peter A. Levine shares his personal journey to heal his own severe childhood trauma offering profound insights into the evolution of his innovative trauma healing method. Casting himself as a modern-day Chiron, the wounded healer of Greek mythology, Dr. Levine describes, in graphic detail, the violence of his childhood juxtaposed with specific happy and exuberant memories, which helped him prepare for coming to terms with his horrifying experiences. He shares his inner experience of being guided through Somatic Experiencing (SE) to illuminate and untangle his traumatic wounds and describes the mysterious and unexpected dreams and visions that have guided him through his life's work. Exploring his dream visitations from Albert Einstein in depth, he explains how he came to view Einstein as his personal spirit guide and mentor and how he later discovered his own personal and profound real-life connection to him through his mother. Describing his breakthroughs in developing Somatic Experiencing, the author details how he helped thousands of others before resolving his own trauma years later with the support of his method. He explains how the SE method is derived from his studies of wild animals in their natural environments, neurobiology, and more than 50 years of clinical observations. He describes his education and career as well as his encounters with noteworthy figures such as somaticists Charlotte Selver and Ida Rolf, ethological zoologist Nikolaas Tinbergen, and autism pioneer Mira Rothenberg. Unveiling the inner story of the man who changed the way psychologists, doctors, and healers understand and treat the wounds of trauma and abuse, this autobiography reveals how anyone suffering from trauma has a valuable story to tell. And by telling our stories, we can catalyze the return of hope, dignity, and wholeness. There's another level of strength above being able to be the guy that does that that makes you the guy who has the ability to do it but doesn't." - Moha Bensofia Prefrontal Cortex Blood Flow "There's a study that's been done in Sweden on violent defenders. The one thing they all have in common is that they have a lack of oxygenated blood flow to the prefrontal cortex. Being able to control that, being able to tap into these things at will is a powerful skill to have. It's life-changing. The person that can turn that off and walk away from a problem and the person that can't, have very different outcomes and very different lives. That's the difference between being awarded and celebrated for achievements vs ending up in prison." - Moha Bensofia How To Be A Good CEO "To be a good CEO you need three things: You need to listen and you need to learn. Don't make this about you and your ego. Surround yourself with smart people and learn from them. You need to care. Part of your job is to care about your team, the users, and the investors. Just care. You need to communicate. You know how to talk. It's so simple to be a CEO." - Moha Bensofia Nothing Is A Coincidence "In life, there are no coincidences. In this conversation, I interview my former teacher, Betsy Polatin who taught me Alexander Technique at Boston University as part of my theater studies. Those teachings had a profound impact on my life, helping me to recognize where I was making unuseful efforts both with my body and in my life. I began to understand personal responsibility in a new way and my relationships shifted. Twenty years later those lessons are still with me and resonate strongly as I prepare to release my first book. Here we talk about the mind-body connection and Betsy's expanded model for releasing trauma with her clients. Internationally recognized breathing/movement specialist and best-selling author, Betsy Polatin, MFA, SEP, has been teaching for more than forty-five years. She was a master lecturer at Boston University's College of Fine Arts for twenty-five years. Her background includes many years of movement education and performance, as well as training in the Alexander Technique, music, dance, yoga, meditation, trauma resolution, and the broader healing arts. Her work is greatly influenced by the teachings of Spiritual and Meditation Masters. Betsy leads international trainings where she presents her unique and revolutionary fusion of ideas: scientific knowledge combined with ancient wisdom and intuitive human creativity. A sample of her teaching experience includes Berklee College of Music, Touch and Movement in Trauma Therapy for PESI, Kripalu, The Embodiment Conference, Tanglewood Music Festival, Opera Institute of Boston, Psychotherapy Networker, Performing Arts Medicine Association, U.S. Association for Body Psychotherapy, Science and Nonduality Conference, and International Trauma and Yoga Conferences in the US and abroad. Since 2016, she has been co-teaching ongoing traveling workshops, themed “Trauma and the Performing Artist” and “Trauma in the Public Eye,” with Peter A. Levine, PhD. She also teaches “Returning to Ourselves, the Wisdom of Trauma,” with Dr. Gabor Maté. Betsy is the author of the best-seller, HUMANUAL, an Epic Journey to your Expanded Self, and The Actor's Secret. As a well-known educator, she has published numerous articles in the Huffington Post. She maintains a private practice online internationally. Dedeker Winston is a relationship coach, writer, podcast host, and advocate for polyamory. She is a somatic-practitioner-in-training, and joins us to introduce another therapeutic intervention method for you to consider on your recovery journey. Somatic experiencing is all about bodily sensations. It ties together both our physical and psychological experiences to guide our nervous system through its trauma response and into healing. Not all practitioners come from psychiatry, with some having backgrounds in physical therapy, dance, or being a chiropractor. One of the things that draws people — including myself — to this method of intervention is that you do not have to talk about your trauma. Instead, its main focus is understanding what it means to feel things in our bodies, and to stop the feedback loop of body sensations triggering trauma responses that then trigger body sensations. Topics/Triggers: What somatic experiencing is based on, as per its creator Peter A. Levine, PhD How Dedeker's experience with PTSD led her to somatic experiencing + why "talk therapy" wasn't the solution for her A breakdown of Dedeker's 1st session of somatic experiencing, including how she finally started to feel good in her body again Why embodiment leads us back into being a whole being connected to nature in a way that psychotherapy does not What capitalism's influence on therapy has done + the reason it keeps us from knowing ourselves Christianity/Catholicism's influence on our western cultural ideology that being in tune with our flesh is bad A step-by-step of what somatic experiencing is, why it could work for you, personal experiences from our own sessions, and what you can expect from a session of your own Dedeker's personal word of advice for survivors, especially those that are LGBTQ+ and/or in nontraditional relationships Multiamory Podcast Dedeker's book: The Smart Girl's Guide to Polyamory Peter A. Psychology, embodiment and toxic relationships... What a subtitle, eh? Let me begin with a little appreciation for your patience. It's been a minute between podcasts as they draw the short straw when I'm elbow deep in projects. I can assure you, this is worth it.  Laura Corcoran is a Holistic Psychologist. Her 10 years of experience in the field range from forensic, mental health, and addictions primarily. She's also an incredibly honest, raw, intelligent, kind woman and a Mum of "two light beams", as she puts it.   This episode is vast in its topic and while it began with the contradictions around some of the principles of psychology, we weave in and out of rabbit holes that most people can relate to including repressed trauma emerging in the *stressful* now of life and toxic bonds in passion relationships.  Including: Trauma that we might not realise is trauma (it's not always how it seems). All of us have in our life experienced a time where what we were feeling was too much. Toxic bonded relationships we think are filled with passion but are bound together by pain. An embodied approach to healing and the basis  The basics that psychology can forget that make all the difference to long term change Sensory experiences, breath and movement for regulation and healing A ton more... This little quote is from one of Laura's influences, Peter Levine, and somewhat encompasses the point Laura unpacks around the dire need for embodied practices within psychology treatments.  "If frightening sensations are not given the time and attention they need to move through the body and resolve or dissolve, the individual will continue to be gripped by fear." - Peter A.
