David Grisman - Celebrating 35 Years of Acoustic Disc

My guest this week is a legend of American string band music. When David Grisman raised his middle finger to MCA Records, after being  dropped for failing to meet arbitrary sales targets, he couldn't have known it would spark a 35-year musical revolution. As one of America's foremost, and best loved, mandolin virtuosos turns 80 this year, he offers a fascinating glimpse into the birth, evolution, and future of Acoustic Disc, the independent label he founded in 1990 that became a vital archive of American string band traditions, as well as home to over three decades of his own music.Grisman's journey from frustrated artist to label founder came at a pivotal moment in music history, as CDs were eclipsing vinyl and the digital revolution loomed on the horizon. He built his own studio, using gear he bought from the iconic 1750 Arch Studios, and Acoustic Disc was born. The label's early success—including Grammy nominations for its first two releases—established a blueprint combining Grisman's new compositions, collaborations with luminaries like Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, and carefully chosen historical recordings. The switch from physical media to digital distribution liberated both Grisman's creative vision and business model."It's just too beautiful a concept to make one product and sell an infinite number without manufacturing anything," he explains. This shift allows him to release an album every month, including expanded versions of classic recordings with Tony Rice, Jerry Garcia, and others. These "deluxe editions" offer fascinating insights into the creative process behind influential albums like Tone Poems, capturing not just the music but the conversations between master musicians at work.Whether you're a huge Grisman fan, dedicated bluegrass lover or just a fan of acoustic music at its best, Acoustic Disc's extraordinary catalog offers a gateway into America's rich string band traditions. Find out more at acousticdisc.com and, while you're there, sign up for their weekly newsletter to receive a free "Treat of the Week".For updates, follow David on Instagram and FacebookHappy picking.MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Percussionist extraordinaire Chris English reflects on his rich musical background rooted in a family of pastors, delves into the background of the formation of SGP and describes the emotions of band leader Sam Grisman as he prepared to step in for the ailing Phil Lesh with the day's headliners moments after the interview.  Both guests describe the magic moment from the night before when Billy Strings joined the band during their show at the UC Theater in Berkeley along with long-time friend and cross-genre violinist, Alex Hargreaves -  adding an exciting twist to the backstage tales told by these fine musicians. It's a perfect warm up for anyone planning to catch SGP shows as they tour the country,  and a chance for listeners who have already heard this must-see band to learn more about two of its extraordinary members. Episode 309: Sam Grisman, the 35-year-old son of mandolin icon David “Dawg” Grisman, grew up in a unique and supercharged musical environment, to put it mildly. Jerry Garcia was coming over all the time to the family home to pick and record old-time folk music with the elder Grisman. Bluegrass legends came and went, rehearsing and recording, and giving Sam something to aspire to when he picked up the bass as a little kid. After a decade working and touring as sideman, he's now based in Nashville leading his own collective, the Sam Grisman Project, which is nurturing the repertoire of the Grisman/Garcia partnership, with selected tunes from the Grateful Dead repertoire as well. With a remarkable concert at the Ryman Auditorium in January 2025, Sam stepped into a new phase of his musical life.

I never had big aspirations to be a musician or play guitar at all. But I started playing during the pandemic. - Bella Rayne Honestly,  I was thrilled to play with all of these musicians, but I have a special place in my heart for the guys from Los Lobos. Yeah. I mean, holy cow. What a thrill. - Jill Simmons From the beginning, I'm grateful. That we've been able to do what we've wanted to do all these years. The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

While Jerry Garcia collaborated with dozens of artists beyond fronting the Grateful Dead and The Jerry Garcia Band, few are as recognizable in name as David “Dawg” Grisman. As you'll soon hear, their relationship was initially happenstance but as time wore on, it was inevitable that these two geniuses would meet and collaborate in both live and studio settings. David Grisman, roots music guru, multi-instrumentalist who is probably most famous for his masterful mandolin playing has released a series of “bare bone” acoustic Garcia and Grisman recordings dubbed Bare Bones. Two of these volumes have already released, the first on Jerry Garcia's 82nd birthday just a few weeks back. A third will be released August 30th by Acoustic Disc. We are super honored to have Sam Grisman as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Sam - son of legendary David 'Dawg' Grisman - is taking the music that has surrounded him since birth and is creating something new and special through his own lens. Sam says this about the project... "The music that my father David Grisman and his close friend, Jerry Garcia, made in the early 90s (in the house that I grew up in) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded, it also triggers my oldest and fondest musical memories. What I find most inspiring about this material is the way their camaraderie and their love and joy for the music, simply oozes out of each recording. It is also impressive how deeply they get beneath their favorite songs—whether they are originals, covers or traditional/old time tunes—and how expertly that material was curated. My goal in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a platform for my friends and me to showcase our genuine passion and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry's music. By playing some of their beloved repertoire and sharing the original music that our own collective has to offer, we will also show the impact that this music has had on our own individual musical voices. Ultimately, there is nothing that makes me happier than playing great songs with my best friends and my hope is to share that happiness with audiences all over!" We talk with Sam about: The legacy of the music and carrying it forward into the future. How forming the band was his way of honoring the privilege of being a part of this musical family. If he has ever felt pressure to carry on the musical trip. What made him fall in love with the music on his own, apart from his Dad and Jerry's influence. Childhood memories of mandolin camp with some of today's heavy hitters hen they were all kids. Infusing your own unique energy into recreating something that so many people know. Memories of Jerry and his Dad playing tunes in the living room. What cartoons were hip for him as a kid and why Dawg didn't like him to watch modern ones. ...and a whole lot more! Today's episode is about "Grateful Dawg" (Gillian Grisman, 2000), which chronicles the friendship and artistic collaboration between Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Our Very Special Guest is Brian Weinsten of the podcast Attendance Bias. Brian was nice enough to have us on his show and we're returning the favor. Grateful Dawg is very much a family affair - the director's father is David Grisman, other family members appear in the show, and it features cinematography by Justin Kreutzmann, son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann. Garcia and Grisman connected in the 60's around the time the Dead was starting to take off. They had a bluegrass band together, Old and In the Way. After that band fell apart, they lost touch for years. The film goes through that history but focuses primarily on the period of time between their reconnection in the late 80s and Garcia's death in 1995. During that time, playing music with Grisman and spending time with Grisman's family and fellow musicians was a respite from the strain of being "Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead". The film captures revealing moments of Jerry away from the spotlight and (as we explain) contains several musical performances presented in full, along with the absolutely hilarious 1991 music video for Garcia/Grisman's cover of the blues classic "The Thrill Is Gone". It's a great hang. Rock Docs is a Treble Media Podcast hosted by David Lizerbram & Andrew Keatts   Twitter: @RockDocsPod   Instagram: @RockDocsPod   Cover Art by N.C. I've recently been reflecting on how much life happens "in the hallway". You know, that space between one door closing and the next one opening ;) I used to find that space intensely uncomfortable, and was often "frozen" while waiting for the next thing to happen... THANK GOODNESS I've come to realize that THE HALLWAY is the place to be!! As mentioned, its the place that life is actually really happening! It is THE NOW, rather than the past or the future. And yes it can still be very uncomfortable, but that's because it's often a space of uncertainty, or limbo as its also called. That being said, my experience has shown me, and continues to show me, that uncertainty doesn't have to be scary or always uncomfortable. It can be exciting and exhilirating, when appropriate, and yet the difficult times will always lead to spiritual growth, should I opt to take on that perspective.  Here's to finding comfort in the hallway! Here's to no longer waiting for the "next thing" but rather embracing the "now thing".  Join me and perhaps be inspired to be where your feet are :) **DISCLAIMER: Please take note that any references to ketamine infusions or any other form of medicinal treatments, mainstream or non mainstream, are strictly meant to provide an insight into my own experiences. Two of their adult children are so disabled that the Rodriguezes have guardianship over them, meaning they have no rights. One child has undergone multiple surgeries, including spinal cord surgery, brain surgery, and stomach stoma surgery. The Rodriguez family has faced accusations from their daughter's neurologist, Dr. Grisman, accusing Claudia of having Munchausen by proxy, a disorder in which a caregiver intentionally causes or exaggerates the medical symptoms of someone in their care. Claudia vehemently denies these claims, stating that she is a mother who would do anything for her children and that others shouldn't judge her unless they have been in her shoes. Despite their claims of innocence, the authorities suspect that Rodriguez's oldest daughter, Logan, is the one sending the Stalking messages. However, Claudia and David say this is impossible as Logan was in a mental health facility without access to any devices when the Stalking started up again. Just click on the “Audio” arrow above and enjoy!  Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday – here on our website, or wherever you get your podcasts. Erwan and I are busy cooking up special shows with your musical requests, so get them in! Send your musical requests to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr  Tell us why you like the piece of music, too – it makes it more interesting for us all! Be sure you check out our wonderful podcasts! In addition to the breaking news articles on our site, with in-depth analysis of current affairs in France and across the globe, we have several podcasts which will leave you hungry for more. There's Paris Perspective, Africa Calling, Spotlight on France, and of course, The Sound Kitchen. We have an award-winning bilingual series - an old-time radio show, with actors (!) to help you learn French, called Les voisins du 12 bis. And there is the excellent International Report, too. As you see, sound is still quite present in the RFI English service. Keep checking our website for updates on the latest from our excellent staff of journalists. You never know what we'll surprise you with! To listen to our podcasts from your PC, go to our website and click on the three horizontal bars on the top right, choose “Listen to RFI / Podcasts”, and you've got ‘em ! You can either listen directly or subscribe and receive them directly on your mobile phone. To listen to our podcasts from your mobile phone, slide through the tabs just under the lead article (the first tab is “Headline News”) until you see “Podcasts”, and choose your show.  Teachers, take note! I save postcards and stamps from all over the world to send to you for your students. If you would like stamps and postcards for your students, just write and let me know. The address is english.service@rfi.fr  If you would like to donate stamps and postcards, feel free! Our address is listed below.  Another idea for your students: My beloved music teacher from St Edward's University in Austin, Texas, Dr Gerald Muller, has been writing books for young adults in his retirement – and they are free! There is a volume of biographies of painters and musicians called Gentle Giants, and an excellent biography of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, too. They are also a good way to help you improve your English - that's how I worked on my French, reading books which were meant for young readers – and I guarantee you, it's a good method for improving your language skills. To get Br. Gerald's free books, click here.  Independent RFI English Clubs: Be sure to always include Audrey Iattoni (audrey.iattoni@rfi.fr) from our Listener Relations department in all your RFI Club correspondence. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! And don't forget, there is a Facebook page just for you, the independent RFI English Clubs. Only members of RFI English Clubs can belong to this group page, so when you apply to join, be sure you include the name of your RFI Club and your membership number. Everyone can look at it, but only members of the group can post on it. If you haven't yet asked to join the group, and you are a member of an independent, officially recognized RFI English club, go to the Facebook link above, and fill out the questionnaire !!!!! (if you do not answer the questions, I click “decline”). There's a Facebook page for members of the general RFI Listeners Club, too. Just click on the link above and fill out the questionnaire, and you can connect with your fellow Club members around the world. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! This week's quiz: In early May, French President Emmanuel Macron was in Strasbourg to address the European Commission. He presented ideas for a new European political community, which we reported on in our article “Macron advocates for creation of a 'European political community beyond the bloc”. I asked you to send me the names of the three countries, all former USSR satellite states, that want to join the European Union.  The answer is: Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia. As RFI Club member and long-time RFI English listener Vladimir Gudzenko from Moscow noted in his winning quiz entry: “The common problem in these countries is that all they are partly occupied by Russia! For Moldova, there is the self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria, occupied by Russia. In Georgia, there are two self-proclaimed independent countries, also occupied by Russia:  Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Then in Ukraine, there is the Crimea and the Donbas and Lugansk regions, also self-proclaimed independent countries.”  EU membership takes a very long time, and for these three countries, with these very particular complications, it won't be easy … As Macron noted: "Even if we gave them candidate status tomorrow, we all know perfectly well that the process of allowing them to join would take several years, in truth doubtless several decades." So Macron proposed a "European political community", which would: “… allow democratic European nations ... to find a new space for political cooperation, security, cooperation in energy, transport, investment, infrastructure, the movement of people."  The winners are: Salehin An Nahiyann from the Shetu RFI Listeners Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh, and Sameen Riaz, from the RFI Listeners Club in Sheikhupura City, Pakistan. There's RFI English listener Pradip Basak from West Bengal, India, and RFI Listener Club members Sagor Mia – who is also the president of the “Let's go on the right path and tell the truth, radio listener club” in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh - and Vladimir Gudzenko who lives near Moscow, in Russia. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “Dance of the Blessed Spirits” from the opera Orpheus and Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan, with Karlheinz Zoeller, flutist; “Brazilian Breeze” by David Grisman, performed by Grisman and his quintet; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, and “Lugt, Schwestern” from Richard Wagner's opera  Das Rheingold, sung by Diana Newman, Annie Rosen, Lindsay Ammann, and Samuel Youn, with the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis. Do you have a musical request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... You have to listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, refer to our article “G7 aims to raise $600 billion to counter China's Belt and Road”  to help you find the answer. You have until 1 August to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 6 August podcast. When you enter, be sure you send your postal address with your answer, and if you have one, your RFI Listeners Club membership number. Send your answers to: english.service@rfi.fr or Susan Owensby RFI – The Sound Kitchen 80, rue Camille Desmoulins 92130 Issy-les-Moulineaux France or By text … You can also send your quiz answers to The Sound Kitchen mobile phone. Conceived of (successfully) as an "instant folk song" in the age of instant mashed potatoes and instant coffee, "Long Black Veil" is a tale of murder and infidelity, yes, but is it also a tale of (I hate to say it) "bros before hoes" taken to its senseless, meaningless extreme? The narrator of this song, singing from The Great Beyond, may have wanted to go down a hero by admitting to a crime he didn't commit (murder) so he wouldn't have to admit to a crime he did commit (sleeping with best friend's wife). But I can't help but see him as a selfish coward who's done nothing but add to the burden of those still living. Life goes on without him, and that means 1) there's still a murderer at large and the townsfolk have no idea 2) he died while his best friend was still in belief of his lies 3) neither his mistress' nor his best friend's life is going to get any easier now that he's gone. Not in the short term anyway. Great song though! I'm a bit rusty after some time off, so forgive me any production errors.

Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah   This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful,  'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine  Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love  'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set..   Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself..       Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/70 - Sunday   One - 1:02:46   Intro [0:03] ; Uncle John's Band [6:47] % Deep Elem Blues [5:51] % Friend Of The Devil [3:32] % Big Railroad Blues [3:14] % Dark Hollow [2:56] % Ripple [4:20] % To Lay Me Down [5:12] % Truckin' [5:35]%[0:12] ; Rosalie McFall [2:24] % Cumberland Blues [5:04] % New Speedway Boogie [9:31] % Brokedown Palace [5:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122316.mp3   My most sincere hope that all of my friends here have a very healthy and happy Holiday...   thanks for your support...........   the professor
