On February 19th, 2015, Clemente Padín, the elder statesman of Uruguayan art, replied to an email from his compatriot and young artist Francisco Tomsich with a fateful attachment: a list of email and postal addresses of six Yugoslav mail artists. These were some of the people with whom Padín had corresponded in the 1970s and 80s and 90s as part of a mail art network.Padín’s list launched Tomsich into a story of surprising discoveries, unintended consequences, and, indeed, Yugoslavia as a cultural space; a story of art and the postal service and the threads that connect us; a story of friendships spanning decades and dictatorships and continents and generations...Featuring the songs "Eskimo / Koka Kola," "Fabrika," and "Žene" by E.P.P.The Remembering Yugoslavia podcast explores the memory of a country that no longer exists. This interview with letter writing enthusiast, and all round creative person Naomi Bulger, is a realist’s take on becoming an artist. It’s very refreshing and inspiring. Give it a listen! Audio note: this interview was recorded via Skype, before we were able to improve our audio quality. Naomi Bulger is a writer, illustrator and teacher from Melbourne, Australia. Her love for illustration started with reading illustrated children’s books. However, that kind of art was discouraged during her school days. It took a long time for her to find her way back to illustration. Naomi has worked in journalism and copywriting, and continues with creative writing in different forms. Mail art is what finally got her back into illustrating. It was a creative outlet during a stressful time. In this interview she tells her story, and shares her thoughts on making your creative pursuits a career. She describes some “dos and don’ts” about creative work and how to get started as an illustrator. In this episode, Miriam Kienle, Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies, discusses her work on the artist Raymond Edward "Ray" Johnson. Among other things, she describes Johnson's studies at Black Mountain College and relationship with Andy Warhol, as well as his invention of "mail art" or "correspondence art" in the early 1950s. She explains how the mail facilitated both communication and censorship, especially of sexual minorities, and how Johnson used the mail to establish artistic networks in which he circulated his "polysemic" collages, which he referred to as "moticos." She also discusses Johnson's complicated relationship to the art market and his contestation of the concepts of "authorship" and "the work."Keywords: gender and sexuality, critical theory, new media, curatorial studies, digital humanities See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kent Hall is tough to categorize. On one hand he's a photographer who makes books. On the other, he's a collage artist who makes books. But he's also a poet—and yes, a poet who makes books. His fascination with the mundane and the detritus of modern life are the raw materials for much of what he creates and whether he's being inspired by film or literature or simply watching the city move around him, his growing body of work gets more and more interesting with every new expression.
