Wallker Independence's Katie Findlay talks industry, filming, and possible cancellation

We spoke with Katie Findlay, who currently stars on The CW's Walker Independence. Fans were disappointed when the network decided not to renew the show for a second season. So, while the show remains in limbo with hopes of finding a home somewhere else, we spoke with Katie about her history in the industry, why she loved working on the show so much, and what her hopes are moving forward. Katie was one of the nicest people I have ever spoken to and I felt so comfortable speaking with her that we could have a deep and honest conversation that was extremely refreshing. So I hope the show finds a home, but if not I am sure we will be seeing Katie on another great project soon. = Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Shamindri De Sayrah Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Set in the late 1800s, an origin story of "Walker," "Walker Independence" follows Abby Walker, an affluent and tough-minded Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. Abby arrives in Independence, Texas, where she encounters diverse and eclectic residents running from their pasts, chasing their dreams, and keeping their secrets. Abby runs into Hoyt Rawlins, a slippery rogue, thief, and con artist with a dented heart of gold who quickly eyes Abby as a mark until she turns the tables on him. In seeking justice for her husband, Abby and Hoyt soon find themselves precariously aligned, both seeking to uncover the truth about the identity of Abby's husband's killer, and vow to save Independence -- a frontier boomtown where nothing is what it seems. *All episodes of Walker Independence are available to stream for free on The CW app. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @SilenceonSet and Instagram @SilenceonSetPod

Not only is it a colossal challenge trying to spark a career in film and television, but once you get there, the pressure rarely lets up. How does one manage such non-stop stressors, especially the ones that are entirely out of an artist's control? There's no be-all, end-all answer to that question, but over the years, Katherine McNamara's built up an especially effective and inspiring set of tools and ideas to ensure she'll continue forging forward, and likely inspire others to do the same in the process.McNamara joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to put the spotlight on two recent projects, Charlie Day's feature directorial debut, Fool's Paradise, and her new CW series, Walker: Independence, which sadly was canceled the day after we recorded. Fool's Paradise stars Day as a mute man who's plucked off the street by Ray Liotta's character, a producer desperate to replace an actor who won't come out of his trailer and, it turns out, Day's character looks exactly like this actor. As for Walker: Independence, that one was a prequel series to The CW's Walker starring Jared Padalecki. Set in the 1800s, McNamara headlined as Abby Walker, Padalecki's character's ancestor. Even though The CW did cut the show after just one season, there are reports circulating that it is on the hunt for a new home.Whether Walker: Independence continues on elsewhere or not, there's no doubt McNamara will thrive in front of and eventually behind the lens. During our Collider Ladies Night conversation, we revisited her journey in theater, film, and television including a number of key influences she met along the way who proved pivotal in shaping her outlook on industry operations and what it means to be a strong leader and collaborator on set.Hear all about it on this edition of Collider Ladies Night! We spoke to Katherine McNamara shortly after announcements were made, leaving 'Walker: Independence' in limbo. Not sure if the show will be picked up or not, we went on to discuss the importance of having a show like it on the network, how much change it was doing, and the importance of being able to show a vast range of people coming together despite their differences to work towards a common goal. McNamara and I spoke about a possible Outlander and Walker: Independence crossover (I would love for it to happen, and McNamara is friends with the cast of Outlander, including its male lead, Sam Heughan). We also went over Abby's journey, how Abby could sleep with Tom, my hope that she has at least a one-night stand with Hoyt next season, and of course, where we stand regarding the show moving forward. McNamara is one of the nicest people to talk to; she has become a great friend and spent extra time with me to make sure she answered all of my questions and a rapid-fire of fan questions pulled from Twitter. She is generous, she is gorgeous inside and out, and she is a fantastic person. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a renewal or a pickup somewhere. We spoke to Justin Johnson Cortez exclusively about all things 'Walker: Independence' and how important having a show that is real and authentic (especially when it comes to diversity, native languages, and wardrobe). Cortez went on to discuss his character, Calian, and how much he evolves over the season from being Abby's friend to ultimately becoming part of the gang trying to take down the "bad guys." Of course we also had to discuss some fun things like his costume, if he took anything from set, and his hair regime (because we are all jealous of the beautiful hair), and the shenaniganson set. Cortez also gave us some insights into some fun happening when the camera was not rolling and what he is looking forward to if the show gets renewed. Philemon Chambers plays Deputy Augustus on The CW's Walker: Independence. Chambers (who said I can call him Philly) spoke about the importance of diversity on the show and how it's not being used to further the storyline but exists because it should. We discussed the evolution of Augustus from when we first met him to the epic finale, with Augustus being the one to get that final shot in. Philly is one of the most accessible people to speak to; we found ourselves laughing and connecting personally before hitting the record button. We spoke about life, what we have in common, and our overall experiences. He is so loving and supportive of his cast and is humbled by the position he has been graced with. In addition, we both shared our mutual appreciation of trying to destigmatize mental health. We hope to be able to create a more serious forum in the future where we can discuss it in depth because, as he mentions, 'no one is alone in this.' Regardless, Chambers was one of the brightest lights we have had on the podcast, and his insights into the storyline, his character, his castmates, and ultimately his life are ones that I aspire to bottle up. Hope you enjoy getting to know "Philly" as much as I did. Katherine McNamara, plays Abby Walker, on The CW's new hit prequel, Walker: Independence. The prequel was announced after Walker (starring Jared Padalecki) became an instant success. McNamara who is no stranger to playing a bad ass, plays Abby Walker, a survivor who is determined to keep moving forward after her husband gets murdered in front of her eyes. Walker ends up in Independence, Texas in search of justice and comes across all sorts of fun characters. McNamara said she had so much fun playing Abby Walker and working on developing her story and getting into the details of her character. She had fun in the period clothing (which she said is a mix of vintage and hand made items), as well as, working with Matt Barr (Hoyt Rawlins). McNamera said its quite a ride that Abby is going to go through this season but is proud of what she has accomplished so far. So lots of chaos ahead! Also for all those Outlander fans, McNamera does discuss not only the tartan in her promo photo but a little side anedote about Sam Heughan. It is a pleasure to welcome actor, producer, and writer Justin Johnson Cortez to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born and raised in Santa Paula, California – just outside of rustic Ojai – Justin still lives in the rural house he grew up in. As a youth, he loved and excelled in everything athletic from skateboarding to football. However, he was not until his mid-20s that Justin began showing an interest in acting. He took classes, which ultimately lead him to be signed by an agent and a manager. At this same time, Justin began writing as he did not see roles that featured characters like him. Half Native Yaqui and Latino on his mother's side, Justin Johnson-Cortez stated that he was disappointed in the lack of representation in film and television. Starting this fall, Justin will star in the CW's Walker: Independence as Calian. Set in the late 1800s, Walker: Independence follows Abby Walker (played by Kate McNamara) on her revenge after being left for dead while her husband was murdered. Calian, serves as her Native guide as they head to Independence. Along the way, the duo crosses paths with Hoyt Rawlins (played by Matt Barr), which leads to an entangled relationship for the three characters. Justin takes on this role with the weight of his ancestors on his shoulders. A Native Yaqui, he learned to speak Apache through an Apache translator on set. He also performed his own stunts including horseback. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Justin Johnson Cortez previewed The CW's Walker: Independence and his short film: The Fall.

It's incredible how a global crisis can change our perspective on so many different levels. The good news is this change of mindset that many business owners are going through right now is generating new opportunities. In this week's episode, let's talk about how serial entrepreneurs are succeeding during this pandemic with my special guest Abby Walker. Part One of ‘How Serial Entrepreneurs Are Succeeding During This Pandemic with Abby Walker’ Abby Walker is a CEO, author, wife, and mom on a mission to help alleviate people's (mostly women's) pain so they can become the greatest versions of themselves. She is the Founder and CEO of Vivian Lou, a line of insoles that empower women to wear heels 4x longer without pain so they can focus more on their dreams and less on their feet.  She is also the CEO of TAOG, a line of all-natural, topical products that powerfully soothe our aching bodies, so we get back to doing the things we love without the pain. She's the host of Undercover Woo Podcast, where she curates the information that helps both women find ways to quiet self-doubt. Live unapologetically. Feel less overwhelmed. Clean the homes and bodies in which we live. Strengthen our intuition. And become unstoppable in our pursuit of peace and freedom.  She's also the author of the book Strap on a Pair written to inspire fellow middle-aged, middle-management, middle-class moms to take the first step—or the next step—toward finding their something more.  Abby currently resides in Denver, Colorado, with her amazing husband, two incredible kiddos, a rescue cat, and the sweetest street dog. “Focus on what brings more profit to your company.” — Ursula Mentjes (12:38-12:39) How does a social entrepreneur like Abby Walker deal with this pandemic while managing her multi-million-dollar companies?  In 2018, she partnered up with an affiliate group, and she had an urge to try something different. So, she stumbled upon this company that takes products, bundles it, and advertises on your behalf, and you pay them a commission for each sale. It was a great setup and a great organization. The volume that they were pumping through Vivian Lou was incredible. Their partnership helped Abby hit her million-dollars sales goal in November 2018, which is UNBELIEVABLE in a good way! In March 2019, their profits had started to go down slowly. The funny thing is, she had this mantra back in 2019, where she used to say, "I don't know what I'm doing!" and that came to fruition. It was like a self-fulling prophecy because it made her think, "Maybe it's time for a change!"  She went through her entire credit card statement. It turned out that Abby wasn't using half of the services that she was paying for. And that was like the defining moment where she had the chance to pivot and reset. Part Two of ‘How Serial Entrepreneurs Are Succeeding During This Pandemic with Abby Walker’ Before the pandemic, I think all of us were like, "It's 2020, let's make our goals happen!" But what were the changes Abby had to make for her business to work out? Specifically, for Vivian Lou and TAOG, she fell in love with direct to consumer marketing again, which is where the sweet spot is in terms of creativity and profitability. She stopped chasing after the numbers and started focusing on what really matters. It's interesting how she's vulnerable about saying, "It's so freeing to be operating in this space again!"   We can learn that this pandemic allowed her to pause and get back down to the core needs of the business instead of just focusing on things that weren't necessarily driving sales or increasing profitability. This is an excellent reminder for all the entrepreneurs out there!   “Noticing the tone, the intention, and the energy behind your approach is powerful!” —  Ursula Mentjes (19:11-19:14)   Let's get to the most exciting part! If you're curious about her top two sales or marketing strategies, and how it's different from what she used to do before, keep reading. Before COVID-19, Abby was just focused on making a sale. It was almost like pushing people through the system. Admittedly, there was no pure intention with her marketing efforts. She started diving back into Facebook because ad costs have gotten lower, and email has played such a critical role in maintaining sales throughout this period.  She is now revisiting how to gain more leads as opposed to chasing sales. Thus, the energy behind her emails shifted, and the intention behind them is far purer than they were last year.    So, here's a sweet little reminder for all of you who are making a big difference in the marketplace. Pause for a moment, clear your mind, and let the sparks of clarity come into play. I understand it's so easy to get distracted and get bombarded by multiple things. But it's best to focus on one thing at a time instead of overwhelming yourself with a long to-do list. If you have a sales team or a group that could use a boost right now, let us know. In this episode of the podcast, I am going to talk “sole” queen, Abby Walker. She is the CEO and founder of Vivian Lou brand for insoles that empower women to wear high heels 4x longer without pain. I met Abby at another podcast and have become friends since then. We talked about how her love for high heels presented an opportunity to be an entreprenuer. She also believes that people get pings and whispers and it’s up to the person to become curious or interested and see where this leads them. This conversation is full of inspiration and courage to follow where your heart is.   So, get ready to listen through your heart! REMEMBER - You can fail on a small scale, but you just can't fail on your dreams.

Abby Walker is the Founder and CEO of Vivian Lou, the exclusive worldwide distributor for Insolia, weight-shifting insoles that allow you to wear high heels four times longer without pain. Abby designed her business processes to distribute work, so that she’s not overly dependent on a single individual or agency. She works closely with contractors on design, fulfillment, advertising, marketing and other services and has no full-time employees. This allowed her to approach $4M in 2019 revenue. The name Vivian Lou represents the attributes of women that Abby wanted to serve. For example, she can run with the boys but is feminine. Vivian is Abby’s daughter’s name and she embodies the target customer. In 2012, Abby was working full-time in a public relations and communications role and felt that she needed a new mission and inspiration. Her first step was to create a shoe blog that she worked on for one hour every Saturday morning. While researching her blog, Abby learned about foot sprays and creams that contain lidocaine to reduce foot inflammation and pain. Abby found it disturbing that women were spraying lidocaine on their body, a numbing agent used by dentists. So she set out to create her own organic foot spray and hired a clinical herbalist and naturopathic doctor to help create an all-natural, anti-inflammatory product. What followed was an invaluable lesson. Abby invested $2,500 to manufacture the foot spray. She learned that creating a large batch of the formula caused a chemistry change and the resulting product was different than her original formula. The product was unusable and she wasn’t able to recoup her investment. Abby believes that everything happens for a reason and listens to what she calls “little whispers” to take action. She says that there’s opportunity waiting behind failures and believes in moving forward a little bit every day. Her failed foot spray led Abby to the inventors of Insolia and the opportunity to be the sole distributor.  Abby didn’t use her name on emails or the Vivian Lou website for many months after launching. At first, she considered this a hobby business and had a full-time corporate sales job. But she was also giving into impostor syndrome feelings such as “you’re not good enough,” “you’re not smart enough,” and “you’re not worthy.” To address impostor syndrome, Abby worked with an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) therapist once or twice per week and it immediately strengthened her resolve. After that she added her name to emails and started talking openly about her business. Sarah Shaw, a previous guest on the Founders and Startups podcast, has helped Abby with celebrity and magazine outreach as well as retail store placements. Key takeaways:  Getting over the fear of taking a risk is a work in progress. While launching the company Abby took the focus off herself and thought about customers instead. Abby worked with Ursula Mentjes, sales coach and speaker, who encouraged her to double prices. However, after about a year working full-time at Vivian Lou, Abby still wasn’t making enough money to cover her budget and returned to the corporate world. Before starting her new full-time job, Abby’s brother-in-law introduced her to Story, a boutique shopping experience created by Rachel Shechtman, that features products related to one theme at a time. Abby was invited to pitch Vivian Lou insoles to their judges, Tory Johnson from Good Morning America Deals and Steals, and Mindy Grossman, who at the time was CEO of the Home Shopping Network (HSN). Her three-minute pitch was successful, and she was fast-tracked to present her products on HSN. Abby pitched Story in Sept. 2015, started her new corporate job in Oct. 2015 and went on HSN to sell Vivian Lou products in Jan., Feb. and April 2016. The products sold out each time she appeared. HSN and QVC merged and Vivian Lou products are still sold on QVC. Facebook ads helped Abby to create consistent growth. Due to Covid, sales have tailed off because people are not wearing high heels at home. Abby is taking this time to slow down and examine processes to increase profitability of each sale.  +++++ Learn more at vivianlou.com | Instagram | Facebook | Pinterest +++++ How would it feel to elevate your business while creating a more fulfilling life? Abby Walker is the CEO of Vivian Lou Inc., a single-product company with multi-million dollar annual sales dedicated to helping women look and feel better in high heels. She started her company as a “hobby” business (while being a full-time working mom) after picking up the phone and asking one simple question. Abby has also written her book Strap On a Pair to inspire fellow middle-aged, middle-management, middle-class moms to take the first step—or the next step—toward finding their something more.   Today, I’m sitting down with Abby Walker, who is the founder of Vivian Lou. Vivian Lou is a shoe company that focuses on creating insoles for high heels so that high heels are more comfortable to wear. During our conversation, Abby shares some of the fortuitous events that took place in order for her to get her business idea off the ground. The crazy part about Abby’s story is that she started off as a blogger and she didn’t create the actual insoles herself. She found them through a recommendation on a forum, but then connected with the creator of the insoles to strike a deal. Leading her to being an exclusive seller for the product worldwide and growing her business to over four million dollars in roughly four years without any employees.   My biggest takeaway from this conversation is that there are a lot of ways to think about a problem and solve a problem. Problem solving is not binary and we explore Abby’s decision making process so that she can grow and scale her business.   In this broadcast, Abby and I talk about:   What is the origin story of Vivian Lou How did Abby approach her business idea as just a hobby Why Abby had to separate herself from the product and company What were the first few months like when Abby became the exclusive seller of these insoles What steps did Abby take to make her first sale How did Abby start using Facebook Ads to generate revenue What advice does Abby have for people who want to start their business How has Abby structured using contractors rather than employees In what ways do contractors give you more flexibility What does Abby think about scale Why is Abby hesitant to work with retailers What goes into making the right decisions Why you need to learn how to trust your gut What are Abby’s words of wisdom for startups What is the importance of keeping notes during your journey   How to Connect with Abby:   abbylouwalker.com instagram.com/abbylouwalker facebook.com/abbylouwalker   Get the Latest Broadcasts of In The Trenches   Subscribe to In The Trenches on iTunes   How You Can Support In The Trenches   Did you enjoy today's broadcast of In The Trenches? Never feeling like she was really successful in either realm. So, Abby turned to a creative outlet for some release - blogging about shoes for just 1 hour per week. While blogging, she made a chance discovery about an untapped market and the rest is history. Today Abby Walker is the CEO of Vivian Lou, a 7-figure company that creates comfortable insoles for high heeled shoes. She is also the author of the new book Strap on a Pair: A Middle-Aged, Middle-Management, Middle-Class Mom's Quest for Something More. Abby shares how she overcame some of her personal limiting beliefs around earning money, why she equated being rich to being an absent parent and the financial benefits of a practice called EFT. Strap on a pair. No. Get your mind out of the gutter. This is a story about strapping on a pair of high heels and how doing so ended in a multi-million dollar empire that empowers women by making it more comfortable to wear the heels they love. You either love high heels or you hate them. There seems to be no middle ground here. Women's shoes are a multi-billion dollar industry with cult followings around brands. Many women will buy and wear shoes even though the pain is so great after just moments that they can barely stand. In earlier times men even wore them. What is it about high heels that makes women, and some men, feel stronger, more confidant and powerful? Is it just a height thing? That is a conversation for another episode! Today I talk with Abby Walker. Founder of Vivian Lou Insolia insoles and the author of Strap On a Pair.   She shares how she founded a multi-million dollar company with a blog, high heels and a determination to succeed that lead her to HSN, Oprah, The View and so much more. Abby shares questions she asked, questions you can ask yourself and discovers what her theme song is. Yup, this is a full service radio show! Her honesty and candor is not to be missed. Neither is her infectious joy over what she does and who she does it for. She knows her why in her business and she shares it with us and how you can find yours as well. Oh, and if her theme songs gets stuck in your head, feel free to blame me and tweet me about it! Abby Lou Walker is the CEO of Vivian Lou Inc., a single-product company with multi-million dollar annual sales dedicated to helping women look and feel better in high heels. She started her company as a “hobby” business (while being a full-time working mom) after picking up the phone and asking one simple question. This “hobby” made her feel alive again. She had finally found something that quieted her burning desire for something more; and a short two years later, she strapped on a pair of her favorite high heels and walked away from Corporate America. Her mission as the CEO of Vivian Lou is to empower women to wear heels 4x longer without pain so they can focus more on their dreams and less on their feet.  She’s written Strap On a Pair to inspire fellow middle-aged, middle-management, middle-class moms to take the first step—or the next step—toward finding their something more. Prior to starting her own company, Abby served as Chief Marketing Officer for a natural supplements company; Vice President of Account Management and Communications for a financial services company; and Senior Director, Internal Communications at a large financial planning company. She received her Master’s degree in Business Communication from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois, and her Bachelor’s degree in English-Journalism from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Abby currently resides in Denver, Colorado, with her amazing husband, and is Mom to two incredible elementary-school aged kiddos, a couple of cats and a lovable old dog.

Is your hobby the only thing that makes you feel like you? How do you transform that hobby into a successful business? We hear all about that with Abby Walker who is the CEO and worldwide distributor of Vivian Lou! Vivian Lou sells insoles for heels that help women wear them longer without the pain that we all know too well. Always loving heels herself, she immediately latched on to the product when she came across the company in early 2014. Vivian Lou offers two versions of the insoles, classic or couture, and they slightly rotate the heel bone up and back. This shifts your weight off the front of your feet to your heel and stops your foot from slipping which reduces the pain and pressure usually put on women’s forefoot. Abby said that in a standard three-inch heel, 75% of the body’s weight is put on the forefoot, and by using Vivian Lou’s insoles, that weight is equally distributed across the foot and makes it feel as if you’re walking in a flat rather than a heel. Another plus is that they are invisible and can be put in anything from a strappy sandal to open-toed shoes! They also come in four different sizes that range from US size 4-12, so any woman can wear them.  Before Abby began working for Vivian Lou, she worked in corporate marketing and communications for 15 years. After having her second child, she felt like she had lost herself in her career, and decided to start a blog as a side hobby because it helped her feel like herself again. Her blog was called Mama’s Shoes and was her place to gush about how much she loved high heels to her whopping 36 followers. As she was gearing up to write a blog post about foot sprays that helped with pain and inflammation, she found out they contained lidocaine, which is a numbing agent that dentists used. She said she felt that she could come up with a less drastic solution to help with foot pain, and decided to create her own foot spray with all organic and natural ingredients. She hired a chemical herbalist and naturopathic doctor, and together they made a fantastic product that worked better than their competitors. The only problem was since it was natural ingredients, they could only produce it in small batches. Since it couldn’t be mass-produced, the product line fell apart, and her ticket out of the corporate world vanished. As luck would have it, she soon ran across an online forum with two women discussing a great product called Insolia. Surprised she had never heard of it before due to her in-depth knowledge of the shoe industry, she called the chairman of the company to see where they may have gone wrong with their marketing and promotion. The chairman admitted that the company was run by a bunch of male MIT engineers who were struggling to understand and attract the attention of female audiences, and didn’t know how to get it off the ground. Seeing the potential in the product and company, Abby offered to handle their marketing in exchange for an increment of their sales, but the chairman came back with a different offer. He and his team were no longer interested in manufacturing the product and asked Abby if she wanted to become their exclusive distributor. Since she has gotten the brand to appear on platforms such as HSN, Amazon, and O, The Oprah Magazine!  It was slow takeoff for Vivian Lou, though, and Abby said she blames it on her mindset. When she started working for Insolia and launched Vivian Lou in late 2014, she was still working a full-time corporate job, and referred to Vivian Lou as her “hobby business”. After doing some self-discovery, she said she realized she didn’t feel like she was worthy of running a successful company. She knew immediately after launching that something internally was holding her back, and after speaking with an old coworker, she referred her to an emotional freedom practitioner. Her life has since been changed, and her practice has helped her uncover self-doubts stemming from her childhood and her uneasiness with money. She then hired a sales coach who enrolled her in a sales camp that made her more comfortable looking at her numbers and helped her fill out projection worksheets. She began projecting out $100,000 and $500,000, and it motivated her to drive her business, and grow it into the success that it is today! Hear more of Abby’s story in today’s episode! And that was part one of me stepping outside of my comfort zone…[and] that just led to a series of other events…that landed me on HSN, that got me into Oprah magazine [and] opened several opportunities for the brand which has been phenomenal.” -Abby Walker “When you call your side hustles, or your dreams, or what you want to do-if you keep calling them a hobby, the universe will treat them as a hobby.” -Abby Walker “Once you clear your stagnant memories that are holding you back, it allows the universe to provide so much more for you.
