Also, the Santa Rosa Beer Passport promotion is going on. “The American Craft Beer Hall of Fame has been established to honor, celebrate, and commit to history those people who are responsible for initiating, sustaining, and promoting the American craft beer industry. This Hall is to ensure that the memories of their contributions and achievements will not fade with time." – from the American Craft Beer HOF website Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Who would you nominate for the Craft Beer Hall of Fame?A lot of great people made craft beer what it is today and a group of passionate fans is working to recognize them. Craft beer writer, judge, and educator Marty Nachel kicked things off and selected and amazing group to help put things together. The website is live now with intentions to announce the first inductees this Fall. You can check it out here - American Craft Beer Hall of Fame.It not-so-great news, World of Beer announced their entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Their locations in Atlanta didn't do well but the chain had a huge, and successful, presence in Florida and other areas. They were one of the last places we remember seeing a beer randall. J Wakefield announced their closing their taproom in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood but they're not going away. Expect more info on that soon.More news in beer taxes, amazing grains, and we had to talk about tinned fish and our daily cologne. You don't want to miss it! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Author Marty Nachel, author of Beer for Dummies, joins Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha, on the phone from Chicago. Marty has also written How to Judge Beer Like a Pro. In order begin to judge beer like a pro, the first prerequisite is practice. However that's not all. You have to know beer styles and be familiar with different off aromas and flavors as well. Herlinda agrees and adds that the scientific names of things are important to know, to understand beer at this level. For example, Brett, or Brettanomyces. (The term Brettanomyces comes from the Greek for “British fungus.”) Marty has been in the craft brewing industry in many roles for more than thirty years. He first got interested in beer on a long weekend vacation to Toronto where he took a tour of the Molson brewing company. He had never tasted beer so fresh, and in so many styles in one sitting. The most interesting place he has judged beer is in South Africa. He was lucky to be working with a literary agent who knew the publishers of the for Dummies series. They had just done one on wine so they wanted one on beer too and Marty got the gig. There doesn't seem to be one for Cider yet. Actually he self-published How to Judge Beer Like a Pro, on Amazon. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Marty is in Chicago which is home to some great lager style breweries. Goose Island is the local brewery with a brew pub on Clark St. Lagunitas has also opened a location in Chicago, which just reopened a few weeks ago. They made a big impression there when they opened, but since being acquired by Heineken, the novelty seems to have worn thin there. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info.
Guest: Marty Nachel - Beer Educator, International Beer Judge, Author of Beer for Dummies and Homebrewing for Dummies, Head Honcho of Nachel Beer Education A great man once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” That quote has been incorrectly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, and while I'm not sure who really said it, my guest today is a craft beer brewer who, in his own words, has been working in craft beer before it was called “craft.” Marty Nachel is a long-time Beer Educator, the author of "Homebrewing for Dummies,” the co-author of “Beer for Dummies,” and an International Beer Judge. He's also the “Head Honcho” at Nachel Beer Education, an online course where you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about beer – how to understand it, appreciate it, brew it, and promote it. You can find a link to his course in the show notes. With over three decades of beer knowledge and a wide range of industry experience, Marty Nachel can help you become an expert in the world's oldest beverage. So sit back, relax, and crack open a cold one or fill up your pint and get ready to learn a little more about your favorite drink. Before we start, a quick word from our sponsor! Marty Nachel is an experienced BeerJudge, writer and brewing consultant. In the early 1980s, he visited Toronto, Canada, with his wife and took the first brewery tour of his life, tasting an unexpectedly aromatic beer. Since then, the barley juice never let him go, he became a home brewer and today beer is his life. In the podcast he tells his exciting story and reveals the stories behind it...

We begin a new series of podcasts where we try to delve a little deeper into the business of craft beer. We want to go Behind the Pint. To kick us off, we're asking if Craft Beer is really just beer, or if it's a marketing ploy that has exploded into an industry. We have three local Chicago industry experts, 2 brewers and one craft beer guru, on hand to pass opinions and talk about the topic in general. First up is my co-host for this episode. brewmaster at Hopvine Brewing in Aurora IL, Ken McMullen. Supporting the brewing side is owner/brewer Chris Valleau from Forest Park's Exit Strategy Brewing. And finally, beer consultant, educator and writer, and international beer judge, Marty Nachel who helps provide the bridge between the brewers and the consumer. Phil Clark asks the questions, and of course we all have something good to drink while we chat...Cheers!
CBP Stories showcase individual members who have an inspiring story to tell. Marty Nachel was born and raised in the Chicago area. His love for quality beer can be traced back to a long weekender to Toronto and an unplanned tour of the Molson brewery in 1982. He became a member of the BJCP in 1986, one of the first 70 people in North America and the 1st in the state of Illinois. He has since written for countless beer publications, published multiple books on beer and brewing, and is passionate about beer education. www.CraftBeerProfessionals.org
For our fifth straight year at the Great American Beer Festival, we drank all of the beers in Denver so you didn’t have to. This episode is our full recap of this year’s fest, including discussions on the medal winners, our favorite beers at the fest, the hazy IPA takeover, and our inability to navigate the new layout. We also have a bunch of interviews from the festival floor featuring brewers we admire and beer people we respect. And if that isn’t enough, we drink and review three Denver-area beers from our hotel room against the will of our exhausted bodies and brains. We share some good unsolicited advice we received, introduce Craig’s new workout buds, and get interrupted by the drunkest 22 year-old at the fest. Don DiBrita Offline Internet Marketing Craft Beer Geek Don DiBrita and I met on Blab. It was fun getting to know Don DiBrita - Offline Internet Marketing Craft Beer Geek. Don is the founder of Offline Internet Marketing where he helps local small business owners that are struggling to engage their audience by offering community building strategies to grow their busienss. He also founded BeerDogging.com which is one of the largest beer clubs in the United States. He works with breweries and industry folks on all kinds of different projects to help market the craft beer industry. Currently, he is working with "Beer for Dummies" author Marty Nachel on the casting process for his reality web series the "#1 Beer Fan". The conversation quickly dove into Don's experience for his marketing success. He has a corporate background in training and an MBA in human resource training and he has a lot of experience in sales and marketing. When he started the beer club, he found the marketing element to help other businesses, it was a logical progression that worked out well. He started helping breweries, bars and retail shops with the various aspects of local marketing. He really dove into his consultancy by helping create unique messages for each of his clients without sounding like a vaccuum cleaner salesman. Don realized a big shift happening in this industry. He found that most of the small business owners had a "Tell Don't Sell" attitude. He found most owners went on to their social media accounts and weren't engaging properly. It's like a little mouse standing on the street corner, very quietly, saying "hey, buy my stuff". Many people teaching online marketing strategies are using one workflow that incorporates seo, keyword searches, sales funnels and tripwires. The small business owners didn't really understand this process. He found that many of the business owners really enjoyed the face to face approach, knew they had to generate an online presence to stay competitive, but they just didn't enjoy that aspect of the business. This is why many of these businesses are wary of online marketers. Offline Internet Marketing During the interview, I asked Don if he could explain what "Offline Internet Marketing" actually meant. Don is pretty witty and came back with a quick joke about wishing his wife was on the line because she is has a masters degree in literature and always correcting Don when he mentions his company. Don goes on to explain the reason he chose this name was that to him, it sounded like a play on words. He goes on to say that there is a lot of online marketing happening right now, but the offline aspect to business outlines the principals that many of the small businesses he works with have done well for years. Share on Twitter Many of these small businesses were transitioning over to the internet trying to figure out how to market their products and services. They were getting in touch with the big marketing gurus. While many of the people are good, and even those that are, may not be teaching the best strategies for that particular small business. The offline program is a great solution for local business markets, but Don can help these offline relationship and marketing tactics with any small business across the globe. He helps these local small business owners by sharing what he did by going into his local market and interacting. Don likes to use his personal experience when talking with new prospects. When Don first started, he didn't know anyone and no one really knew him. He started out by attending live events. He talked to others about how passionate he was about the topic. He started leveraging these relationships to build his business. He started writing a few blogs and grew from there. The Craft Beer Geek Beer Dogging is one of the largest beer clubs in the United States. They currently have over 10,000 members. They do a variety of things from education to offering deals at differ...
Greg Hall, brewmaster-cum-ciderist, teaches us a ton about cider making - something we knew nothing about. Of course, we touch on his time at Goose Island, the possibility of cider courses through the Siebel Institute in the future, barrel trading with Shaun Hill, and we scratch the surface of cider pairings. Our guest hosts are Marty Nachel and Drew Fox. Music: Juice - Keep It Moving
Drew Fox, brewer and founder of 18th Street Brewery, tells us about his plan to open Gary, Indiana's first brewery and taproom, contract brewing, and camaraderie among brewers in Chicago. Former guest, Jeremy Danner, and reoccurring guest host, Marty Nachel, return to guest host. Music: Juice - Keep It Moving
Funkwerk's co-founder, Brad Lincoln, joins us on the heels of Funkwerks receiving the top honor of "Best Small Brewery" at GABF 2012. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy Carbone has a great group of NYC beer guys including Jim Barnes from Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, Jay Steinhauer of American Beer Distributing and Chris O’Leary from Brew York, New York. The crew is also joined by the authors of “Beer for Dummies”, Steve Ettlinger & Marty Nachel. Tune in as they chat about everything from “extreme” beer to historic beer and reflect on some of their favorite brews at the moment. Learn more about beer tastings, kosher beer, home brewing and more on the best beer radio show in the world! This program was sponsored by GreatBrewers.com. “When you do a reference book in the ‘dummies’ format, your job is largely to ask questions and wonder. I’m a completly befuddled consumer, so I’m a good guy for that job. We also have an obligation to teach the history of beer in this format. It opened up a whole new world for me, I wasn’t too familiar with the world on beer when I started this book.” –Steve Ettlinger, co-author of Beer for Dummies on Beer Sessions Radio “Just because you have a few tables and a concrete patio, that doesn’t make you a beer garden.” –Chris O’Leary of Brew York, New York on Beer Sessions Radio
