8-13-24 Tonight we're talking with Kyle Ducharme in Vermont. Kyle has been doing a lot of mead making classes and education and helping more people with the love of mead. Kyle Ducharme is from Northern Vermont and is a home mead maker that has experience with quality assurance positions in the food and beverage industries. He has been making mead since the fall of 2019, really diving deep during the pandemic. He originally learned from podcasts/youtubers such as Gotmead, The Mead House, Doin the Most, and Man Made Mead. He later joined his homebrew club where he discovered some other mead makers, but mainly beer brewers and judges. He was motivated by the online community to enter competitions and after winning some medals, he entered more competitions to get feedback and improve his skills. That was a valuable step, but becoming a beer and mead judge was really what made him grow exponentially in his mead making. By traveling to learn from others and to judge meads, he could bring that knowledge to others in his homebrew club and online communities. Outside of competing and judging comps, he has started a mead class and small Iron Bee style mead competition to share knowledge/feedback with others. His major goal is to create another major mead competition in New England and to bring up the homebrew mead scene in the area. He is passionate about using foraged ingredients and fruit from local farmers and utilizing honey from all over the world. His parents own a small hop yard and that is what got him initially interested in fermentation. Join us to chat with Kyle! This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. If you are calling in, please turn off the player sound, so we don't get feedback.[break] Sponsor: Look no further than Honnibrook Craft Meadery in Castle Rock, Colorado, for your go-to destination for wonderful, light, and refreshing mead! Who would you nominate for the Craft Beer Hall of Fame?A lot of great people made craft beer what it is today and a group of passionate fans is working to recognize them. Craft beer writer, judge, and educator Marty Nachel kicked things off and selected and amazing group to help put things together. The website is live now with intentions to announce the first inductees this Fall. You can check it out here - American Craft Beer Hall of Fame.It not-so-great news, World of Beer announced their entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Their locations in Atlanta didn't do well but the chain had a huge, and successful, presence in Florida and other areas. They were one of the last places we remember seeing a beer randall. J Wakefield announced their closing their taproom in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood but they're not going away. Send us a Text Message. In November 1939, Georg Elser, acting alone, planted an immense bomb in the Beer Hall cellar in Munich. Using two high-precision clocks, he timed it to explode at the midpoint of Hitler's annual speech commemorating the Beer Hall Putsch. Hitler attended as planned, and spoke from the podium just in front of the bomb – but then left early to oversee his planned attack on France. In April 1940, Hitler rapidly seized Denmark and Norway. Then, on 10 May 1940, like a thunderbolt, the German Wehrmacht struck in the west, simultaneously attacking the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. That same day, Churchill became Prime Minister of Britain. The Allies did not suspect that the main route of attack would be through the Ardennes, leaving their forces trapped north of the German armoured columns. At Dunkirk, far more troops were extricated than had been expected, but it was still a disaster and France capitulated soon after. In this campaign Claus von Stauffenberg served as quartermaster for the Sixth German armoured division. The subsequent Battle of Britain was a failure for the German Luftwaffe, and plans to invade were quietly shelved in favour of a far more ambitious project – the invasion of the Soviet Union, launched on 22 June 1941. By October that year, with German troops at the gates of Moscow, Goebbels announced to assembled foreign correspondents in Berlin that the German advance had ‘brought the war to a close'.During the campaign in Russia, Claus von Stauffenberg came to know two of the key conspirators against Hitler – Henning von Tresckow and Fabian von Schlabrendorff. They would work towards the elimination of Hitler and the Nazis. Confronted by Nazi atrocities, Stauffenberg began to compile a dossier of war crimes committed by the SS. Then he approached senior generals, one after another, urging them to act against Hitler.Having made life very uncomfortable for himself by stirring up opposition to the Nazis, Claus von Stauffenberg sought a posting to Africa, where once again he was engaged in active combat.Written and narrated by Brian WaltersOriginal music, editing and sound design by the amazing Sam LoyEpisode TranscriptA full transcript of the episode is available hereRead the book TREASONYou can read more about Claus von Stauffenberg and the German resistance to Hitler, in the book Treason by Brian Walters. For those with iPads, Treason is available as an interactive Apple Book here. The hard copy can be bought here.If you live out of Australia, the hard copy is best purchased from Blurb. There is also a Kindle version.ResourcesFor a list of the creative commons music and sound effects used in this episode, head here. Finally …If you liked the episode, please share it: the episode link is here. And you can help us by writing a brief review and giving us a (five star!) rating.By all means contact TREASON: Claus von Stauffenberg and the plot to kill Hitler

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, March 23, 2024. Blennerhassett Island may be a beautiful park to visit, but it also boasts a fascinating history. A popular brewery in Morgantown expands. And learn about Chef Boyardee's West Virginia connection…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – In the middle of the Ohio River between Parkersburg, West Virginia and Belpre, Ohio, sits Blennerhassett Island, a place named for the Anglo-Irish gentry who built their estate there in the 18th century and named it for themselves. But this paradise would not last after the arrival of Aaron Burr … Learn more about Blennerhassett Island with The History Project, the Daily304's presentation of famous people, places and events that shaped West Virginia. Then plan a visit to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park when the park opens for the season in May. Read more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=9SxdBF2F82tG57HN&v=q6U2SQBxDr8&feature=youtu.be #2 – From DOMINION POST – Chestnut Brew Works, a staple of the Morgantown microbrewery scene for over a decade, completed a long-anticipated expansion last month with the launch of Chestnut Beer Hall at 132 Pleasant St. Owner Bill Rittenour and his team transformed the former Black Bear Burritos into a space woven with local talent, history and flavor. Local artist Brian Pickens contributed freehand wall art that evokes the crisp, green taste of hops. Pickens also painted the support posts running down the center of the space to look like vibrant tree trunks. Local craftsmen Scott Frederick and Michael Barr created high-top tables using now-rare Chestnut lumber reclaimed from an old church in McDowell County. Rittenour took some of the same lumber and made one-of-a-kind tap handles replete with Appalachian history. The Beer Hall will feature 10-16 Chestnut Brew Works beers on tap. Cheers! Not only that -- he has West Virginia connections. In the early 1900s, The Greenbrier was managed by the same company that managed The Plaza Hotel in New York City, according to historian Bob Conte. When they sent staff down to The Greenbrier, among that staff was 16-year-old Ettore Boiardi, anglicized as “Hector Boyardee.” A native of Italy, Boiardi worked as an apprentice chef in his hometown and in Paris and London before boarding ship for Ellis Island in 1914. He eventually worked his way up to Head Chef at The Plaza Hotel, where he served President Woodrow Wilson and troops returning from WWI. After serving a stint at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, Boiardi opened his first restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, where patrons frequently asked for samples and recipes of his spaghetti sauce. He met Maurice and Eva Weiner, owners of a local self-service grocery store chain who helped Boiardi and his brother Paolo develop a process for canning and distributing spaghetti sauce. In 1938, production was moved to rural Milton, Pa., where its products were sold under the “Chef Boy-Ar-Dee” brand. And the rest, they say, is history. Over the past several weeks we've talked about Music in the Park, Boulevardia, Make Music Day (which is TOMORROW!) and the new releases have been piling up! On the show tomorrow we'll plow through a dozen new releases from KC musicians and bands. • We'll kick things off with a contender for song of the summer from corey dies in the end. • We'll hear a new pop song from Caley Rose, who was featured last week on KCUR 89.3 with a great supporter of KC music, Steve Kraske. • Our old friends from Six Percent have a great new EP coming soon. • The Way Way Back, slowing things down a bit on a new song and still doing everything right. • Jo MacKenzie continues to impress us with more and more new music. • New to us, Jerame Gray pouring out the emotions for those suffering in Ukraine. • Fresh off the stage from Boulevardia and Juneteenth Fest, a new one from The Black Creatures. • Some hip hop from Current exploring mental health issues. • Another new single from one of my favorite (former) KC voices, Danny McGaw. • Also new to us, music from Quinton Paige and Straight White Teeth, who both went to our show page and submitted music. It should be a fun show. We'll throw a little Boulevardia recap in there too, at the top of the show. Next week, on Tuesday, June 28 we're back at the Beer Hall at Boulevard Brewing Company with two special guests, Kat King and PURE XTC. In addition to being on the radio show from 6-7PM, they'll each play a 30-minute set in the Beer Hall from 7-8PM.

It's the classic question, isn't it? If you had a time machine, would you go back and kill Hitler? In this show we explore why that hypothetical isn't as clear cut as it might sound, we learn just how crazy Hitler was and why whatever you thought was way shy of the mark, and we take a sidebar to introduce people to the bizarre lunatic that was bestselling author Karl May.
