One day prior to leading multiple tours of the original location of Industrial Light & Magic, in Van Nuys, CA, for over a hundred people, renowned visual effects innovator and nine-time Academy Award winner Dennis Muren met up with us at the location. It was the first time Dennis had stepped foot inside the building in nearly fifty years, making it once-in-a-lifetime 'On Location" episode. We talked about the maddening pressure of creating the groundbreaking visual effects for "Star Wars" (1977) at this nondescript industrial property outside the Van Nuys airport, why he wanted to work for George Lucas and the filmmaker's clear cinematic vision, meeting Steven Spielberg for the first time at ILM, Van Nuys, his genuine love of movies and filming locations, and his feelings on the reemergence of VistaVision. Today, the location is home to Neiman & Company, an established architectural signage firm that's been in business since 1965 and purchased the building in the early 2000's. www.neimanandco.com

From playing with stop motion to working on the original STAR WARS, Dennis was interested in visual effects at an early age, and throughout the episode he reflects on the evolution of the field following the advent of computer generated imagery. We learn how Dennis prioritizes emotionality when building VFX into a shot and how he consults with a director and the crew  to come up with the best shots for the film. We also learn about the shift away from using models towards computer generated imagery and about the loss of certain aspects of reality that came with transition. We discuss the focusing power of deadlines, and Dennis later shares some advice for young filmmakers looking to breaking the field of VFX. Also included: how Dennis set up a prehistoric video call to coordinate the VFX of JURASSIC PARK across the globe with director Steven Spielberg in 1993. - This episode is sponsored by Godox

[School of Movies 2024] He's responsible for some of the most adored and industry-changing films of all time, and for some of the biggest cases of fan backlash ever recorded. It's maybe a little harder to remember now, after year upon year of Disney's Star Wars being declared the worst thing that has ever been put to screen, but a few years earlier, similar guys were saying similar things about the man that many fans wish had never sold to America's Mousy Spirit of Capitalism. What we have for you here is a focused collection of monologues drawn from commentaries across all six of the movies he was directly in charge of, bringing you from Star Wars in 1977 all the way to Revenge of the Sith in 2005. The cumulative effect of listening to George say one thing and then seem to contradict himself down the line, regarding what was planned and when gives way to the portrait of a frustrated storyteller hoping to be understood. These moments are interspersed with monologues from his production teams, including Empire Strikes Back director, his mentor Irvin Kirshner, Empire and Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan, FX master craftsman Dennis Muren, animation director Rob Coleman, producer Rick McCallum, concept artist Ralph McQuarrie and the irreplaceable Carrie Fisher.

Steven Spielberg's “Jurassic Park” is more than just a film; it's a cinematic journey that forever altered the trajectory of filmmaking, visual effects, and our collective imaginations. Adapted from Michael Crichton's novel of the same name, the film is a potent concoction of thrilling storytelling, groundbreaking technology, and masterful direction. Even three decades on, it remains a touchstone of popular culture, with its iconic scenes and soundbites reverberating through the annals of cinematic history. At its heart, "Jurassic Park" is a tale of hubris, and humanity's perennial inclination to push the boundaries of nature without wholly understanding or respecting them. John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has realised the dream of millions by resurrecting dinosaurs and housing them in a theme park. While the marvel of the dinosaurs initially elicits wonder and astonishment, things quickly spiral out of control, leading to a thrilling battle for survival.Spielberg has an unrivalled knack for building tension and suspense. He meticulously crafts a crescendo of thrills, from the initial serene interactions with the Brachiosaurus to the terrifying encounter with the T-Rex – a sequence that has, quite rightly, earned its place as one of the most tense and brilliantly executed in film history. The pacing is near perfect, allowing audiences to alternate between awe-struck moments and pulse-pounding escapades. The visual effects, supervised by Dennis Muren and his team at Industrial Light & Magic, together with the animatronic dinosaurs crafted by Stan Winston, were groundbreaking in 1993. What makes it even more incredible is how well these effects have aged. The dinosaurs, synthesising CGI and practical effects, felt (and still feel) astonishingly real. The very first reveal of the Brachiosaurus, with its graceful neck reaching into the treetops, set against John Williams' emotive score, is nothing short of cinematic magic. While the dinosaurs are unquestionably the stars, the human characters are integral to the narrative's potency. Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) is the quintessential palaeontologist, initially disliking children but evolving through his ordeal on the island. Dr Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) is a formidable voice of reason, and Jeff Goldblum's Dr Ian Malcolm, with his dark, sardonic humour and chaos theory explanations, often steals the scene. Attenborough's portrayal of Hammond is also noteworthy, navigating the fine line between a starry-eyed dreamer and an entrepreneur blinded by ambition.Yet, for all its strengths, one could argue that "Jurassic Park" also carries a few inherent flaws. Some of the secondary characters lack depth and occasionally veer into caricature. The film also takes liberties with scientific accuracy. For instance, the Velociraptors are much larger than their real-life counterparts, and the T-Rex's vision being based on movement is more fiction than fact. However, such creative licenses can be forgiven in light of the broader cinematic experience. The film's philosophical underpinnings are just as compelling as its action sequences. It grapples with questions about the consequences of playing god, the ethical implications of cloning, and the uncontrollable nature of life. Dr. Malcolm's famous line, "Life finds a way," succinctly captures the film's essence, emphasizing the unpredictability and resilience of nature, no matter how much humans might try to dominate or commodify it.John Williams' score is, as always, impeccable. From the majestic theme that welcomes viewers to the park to the more ominous tones as chaos ensues, his music is as much a character in the film as the dinosaurs or humans. It elevates the movie from a mere visual spectacle to an emotional odyssey. In conclusion, "Jurassic Park" is a timeless masterpiece that marries thrilling action with profound philosophical musings. Spielberg's ability to evoke awe, terror, and wonder, often within the same scene, cements this film as a monumental achievement. While subsequent sequels have tried to recapture the magic, the original remains unparalleled, reminding viewers of a time when dinosaurs once again roamed the earth and our imaginations.

Director Scott Leberecht began his filmmaking career as a visual effects art director at Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic. His latest documentary film, Jurassic Punk, is about his fellow ILM effects artist Steve “Spaz” Williams. A talented artist, Steve pioneered computer animation VFX in movies, creating the alien effects for The Abyss and the morphing transitions for the “T-100” in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Steve's most ambitious and revolutionary work for the movie and VFX industry was his work on the completely computer animated dinosaurs for 1993's Jurassic Park. Scott met Steve during his internship at ILM. Jurassic Punk was originally meant to be about the whole ILM ensemble at that pivotal time between The Abyss and Jurassic Park. But as Scott gathered the stories, he realized that he needed a main character who had an interesting arc, and Steve definitely fit the profile. Steve's work on Jurassic Park had never been properly acknowledged, with credit for the visual effects going mainly to Phil Tippett and Dennis Muren. Steve himself was always a notoriously difficult, hard-drinking asshole who had trouble fitting into the corporate structure of ILM. Scott found it hard to shoot Steve's interviews for Jurassic Punk, since his friend was at such a low point in his life. But Steve understood that Scott was trying to tell the story of what life can be like for a creative worker who gives their all, only to be left with little credit or money. Scott sees Jurassic Punk as telling two cautionary tales: be careful about innovating within corporate structures, and ensure that the people who create the art are properly acknowledged. Life After Pi, a documentary short Scott made with Christina Lee Storm in 2014, is also a personal story about working in the VFX industry. Shortly before winning the Oscar for their special effects in Life of Pi, the visual effects studio Rhythm & Hues filed for bankruptcy. Scott had been working for the company for about six months when everyone was fired. The doc explores what's been happening to the visual effects industry, as work is outsourced and it becomes a race to the bottom for the cheapest price. There was a very short window of time after Rhythm & Hues' collapse where effects workers could speak their mind, even staging a demonstration outside the Academy Awards that year. Today, effects workers continue to voice their need to form a union, as the quality of effects work declines while studios demand cheaper VFX done at an even faster pace. You can watch Jurassic Punk streaming on Amazon and Kanopy. Life After Pi is on YouTube. Vuonna 1975 toukokuun 26. päivä perustettiin Industrial Light&Magic elokuvatuotantoyritys Van Nuysissa Kaliforniassa. George Lucas tarvitsi ennennäkemättömiä erikoisefektejä uuteen skifielokuvaansa ja alkuperäiseen tiimi: Ken Ralston, Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren, Robert Balalack, Joe Johnston, Phil Tippett, Steve Gawley, Lorne Peterson ja Paul Huston jättivät jälkensä elokuvahistoriaan, kun ILM:n työn tuloksesta koko elokuvateollisuus mullistui. PWE käy läpi tätä muutosta lyhyesti ja antaa oman arvionsa uudesta Disney+ dokumenttisarjasta. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcornwithesko/message

Hello, kaiju lovers! MIFV's season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, wouldn't be complete without some Ray Harryhausen, so Nate invited both of his “co-hosts in kamen” (ba-dum-tsh!) to discuss 20 Million Miles to Earth. (Yes, Jimmy reminds Nate that he got his chronology wrong, because this film was released in 1957 and The Blob was 1958. Oops!). Harryhausen super-fans Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton, co-hosts of the Kaiju Weekly podcast, join Nate in a chat that veers perilously close to derailing at multiple points. Jet lag will do that to you, especially when flying to the Island in the Rad Bug. Regardless, 20 Million Miles was Harryhausen's first truly iconic film, paving the way for his fantasy epics that followed. The intrepid Jimmy From NASA keeps trying to tell his story about seeing a herd of Ymir on their native Venus, but nobody cares. The Toku Topic is the Soviet side of the Space Race since this film begins with a rocket ship crash and was released several months before the launch of Sputnik I. Be prepared for many (bad) Russian accents! To compete with this broadcast, Cameron Winter did a livestream where he sent one of his Cyber-Flies to track down the Ymir so he could be put on display for the film's anniversary and Harryhausen's birthday in June. Winter rambles about seemingly random things while doing so. Special thanks to J.P. Gant for helping to edit this episode! Follow him on Twitter: @Homebrewed_SD (https://tinyurl.com/2jpc36r5). A complete May the Fourth wrap upThe emperor hints at a returnAnd Celebration brings some light and magicThe Kenobi TrailerHasbro FiguresGive us 5 minutes and we'll give you the galaxy.www.ATGcast.comPatreon.com/ATGcast@ATGcastAnother week, another flood of news rumors, clickbait and conversation. This is Pete Fletzer and welcome to disturbances in the Force. All the links to the original sources can be found in the notes and I urge you to check them out. 1.This week was Star Wars Day – May the Fourth – and one of the biggest events from Lucasfilm was the release of the second trailer for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The trailer was 90 seconds and featured a tense moment between Obi-Wan and Uncle Owen Lars, more action scenes between the titular character and various badguys while the voiceover hinted at bounty hunters being employed along with the inquisitors to find the outlaw Jedi. The teaser gave us our first look at Kumail Nanjiani looking worried and wearing what could be Jedi robes. As the promo came to an end, fans witness a robotic arm being attached to what is presumed to be Darth Vader followed by his chest box being attached, lighting up and then culminating in hearing the Dark Lord of the Sith's signature breathing sound. The six-part limited series drops on Disney plus with two episodes on Friday, May 27th.2.In addition to the Kenobi trailer, a 60 minute behind the scenes documentary lauched on Disney-Plus called Disney Gallery – The Book of Boba Fett. The show gives in-depth background and behind the scenes footage of the series including interviews with all the actors, directors and producers. Included in the documentary is more insight into how they were able to create a digital double of Luke Skywalker using a stand-in and the original actor, Mark Hamill, himself. Disney Gallery – Book of Boba Fett is available now on Disney Plus.3.Technology giant, Apple, dropped a 15 minute behind the scenes documentary themselves on their youtube channel called Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound. The black and white stylized mini-movie gives fans a look at the creation and application of sound effects to Star Wars films (with peeks at other Disney properties) created at the groundbreaking sound studio. Of note is the particular focus on sounds from the Prequel series of films. This is not surprising however, as the new Kenobi series will most certainly have direct ties to this era. You can find this documentary short on YouTube now or in the links below.4.May the Fourth was also a day for more toy reveals from Star Wars licensee Hasbro. From the 3.75” line of action figures, look for Ahsoka Clone Troopers, Padawan Anakin, Mandalorian Super Commando, Heavy Assault Stormtrooper, Stormtrooper Commander, a Phase I clone trooper 4 pack and a Retro collection multipack featuring characters from A New Hope. From the Black Series 6-inch line, Hasbro announced an Endor Leia, Figrin D'An from the Cantina band, and New Republic Security Droid as seen in the Mandalorian. From lifesized movie props, they are making Obi-Wan Kenobi's light saber available for the first time as an FX Elite offering and an updated version of Darth Vader's helmet with electronic sounds and film correct red lenses. All these products are available now for pre-order at various outlets.5.At the Imperial Commissary Collectors Convention last week, Ian McDiarmid, the actor who played Emperor Palpatine SLASH Darth Sidious hinted that he may have some role in some of the upcoming Disney Plus Star Wars properties. On a panel he was on he said QUOTE “There's a certain show coming soon set right around the time I may have been considered to be very active. Whether or not you will see my physical body, I cannot comment on. But you will certainly feel my presence.” There was no indication which specific upcoming series he may be a part of, but the. Kenobi series will feature Darth Vader and the Andor series takes place in the early days of the fledgling Rebellion.6.As Star Wars Celebration looms less than three weeks away, information about events happening at the event in Anaheim continues to come out. On May the Fourth a opanel called Light & Magic was announced for the Friday of the four-day weekend event. 🗣️ Despedida y hander (04:22:33).

This is perhaps one of the toughest movie reviews we have ever done: Jurassic Park, a legendary film that has been dissected frame by frame for nearly 30 years, since it came out in 1993. No pressure in reviewing arguably Steven Spielberg's best creature feature, right? No one could ever fathom a scenario wherein they could yell at the hosts through their stereo for leaving out trivia, but also for including too much trivia, right? How do your hosts think this film compares to Jaws? Were there similar technical complications? The screenplay was adapted by David Koepp (Spider-Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Mummy) from Michael Crichton's novel. We address the similarities with Crichton's other theme park fiasco film, Westworld, and the rebooting of that franchise. We talk the performances of all the actors. Sam Neil (Event Horizon, In the Mouth of Madness, hunt for the Wilderpeople) stars as Dr. Alan Grant, a paleontologist and unwilling nanny. Jeff Goldblum (The Fly, Independence Day, Thor: Ragnarok) is the chaotic Ian Malcolm. Laura Dern (Wild, Marriage Story, Blue Velvet) is the amazingly rare female action star, counter to Neil's Grant. Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) stepped out of acting retirement to play Hammond. B.D. Wong (Mr. Robot, Mulan), who has finally gotten some attention in the sequels, still is memorable in his expository scene about how the dino-sausage is made. Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, and basically every Marvel film), embodies every sane person who has ever worked alongside a nitwit and for a capitalist. Finally, Wayne Knight (Seinfeld) is the most loathsome character on film, and we love him for it. We delve into all of the multifaceted special effects and their creators: Stan Winston, Phil Tippett, Dennis Muren, and Michael Lantieri. We also talk about the paleontological experts on set, Robert T. Bakker and Jack Horner, one of whom served as inspiration from Dr. Grant (Neil). Through them we talk about the accuracies, inaccuracies, and dinosaurs onscreen: velociraptor (deinonychus), dilophosaurus, brachiosaurus, gallimimus, parasaurolophus, triceratops, and finally Tyrannosaurus Rex. Luckily, we balance out the review with a discussion with our dear paleontology pals, Dinosaurs Will Always Be Awesome. It also brought us Frank Bonner, the man who played Herb on "WKRP in Cincinnati." What's there not to love????Mary and Scott foolishly allow Dave to create another cocktail - guess what? This one ALSO has a hint of anise flavor in it. Surprised? The Equinox cocktail3 ounces Calvados (French apple brandy)1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice, from about 2 lemons1 1/2 ounces spiced syrup - see below.2 dashes Angostura bittersGarnish: 2 lemon twistsFor the cocktail: fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Calvados, lemon juice, spiced syrup, and bitters into shaker and shake until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into two cocktail glasses, dividing evenly. Garnish each glass with a lemon twist. For the spiced syrup: Measure the water and sugar into a pot and stir together. Add cloves, star anise, and cinnamon sticks. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves completely. Reduce heat and let simmer 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a sealable container and refrigerate for 24 hours. Finely strain and use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.Note - Dave used ready made mulling spices instead of cloves, star anise and cinnamon sticks, as the ingredients were all there. This recipe was taken from the Serious Eats website - "Kevin Martin's Equinox has become a favorite at Boston's Eastern Standard—it offers an autumnal twist on the classic sour. With apple-based Calvados, a savory spiced syrup, and that lemony kick, it's sure to be a home standard, too."

So, I did something dumb. When The Academy announced a panel featuring Marcia Lucas (!!!!), Ben Burtt (!!!!), John Dykstra, Dennis Muren, John Knoll, Harrison Ellenshaw (TB94 Episode 18), Richard Edlund (TB94 Episode 19) and many more ... I bought a ticket. And then it sold out. The event was in Los Angeles on a Thursday and I, well, live in Dallas. So I booked a flight, flew out to California and ended up having the time of my life. Today we continue our celebration and exploration of the original trilogy of Star Wars movies with a look at Episode VI. Return of the Jedi. In this final movie from the original three, the good guys win in the end after overcoming incredible odds. Many fans and critics panned it for including the incredibly cute and furry Ewoks on the moon named Endor as a part of the storyline. Many thought one very tall Wookie was enough cuteness for the series. Yet the Ewoks did provide the setup to one of the movies best lines. The Ewoks thought one of Luke’s robots, C-3PO, was a god. Solo asked him to demonstrate some ‘god-like’ powers to which C- 3PO replied, “It is against my programming to impersonate a deity.” This movie’s big reveal was that Luke and Princess Leia were twins and that she was now free to unabashedly pursue bad boy Han Solo. While Episode VI was the lowest grossing film of the original three, coming in at only $572MM worldwide, it was still a great ride and visually stunning. George Lucas’ in-house organ, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), certainly earned their title for their special effects in the movie. The Sarlacc battle sequence was great, the speeder bike chase on the Endor moon was way cool and the space battle between Rebel and Imperial pilots was a great ride. At the Academy Awards ceremony for movies of that year, Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren, Ken Ralston, and Phil Tippett, all from ILM, received the Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects Oscar award. I thought about this entry in the Star Wars oeuvre in the context of compliance training. One of the key changes from the Department of Justice articled in the 2017 Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs was the change in training. The DOJ wants both targeted and effective training. This means you must be able to demonstrate how your training has been received and utilized by your employee base. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A l’occasion d’une projection au Club de l’Etoile, retour sur un grand classique des années 80, devenu culte vingt ans après sa sortie. The local chapter of SIGGRAPH (a group of computer graphics geniuses) brought Industrial Light and Magic special effects legend Dennis Muren to Vancouver, and Warren was able to interview him. Apologies for the dodgy audio during Warren's questions....the details are too boring to go into, but at any rate Muren's thoughts on visual effects, art and the motion picture industry are the good stuff.
