Liz and Ben are joined by Pratchett academic and cosplayer Freyja Stokes as they head out to the Discworld countryside for a bit of peace, quiet and definitely no murders, in Terry Pratchett's final City Watch book, 2011's Snuff. Sam Vimes is facing his ultimate ordeal: a holiday. But no sooner has he made a mess of meeting the staff at Crundles, the Ramkin country estate, than he smells something rotten in the Shires. When the local blacksmith offers to meet him at midnight, he and his trusty valet Willikins instead find a puddle of blood and the ire of the local magistrates. A lot more's afoot than a simple murder - and it seems to have something to do with goblins, tobacco, and Fred Colon taking a funny turn... One of the last of the Discworld novels, and the final one starring Sam Vimes and (in their by now customary secondary roles) the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, Snuff also introduces a new species of fantasy creature to the Disc: goblins. Not so much hated as barely considered by other peoples, they eke out a wretched existence in the corners of the world that can hide them, a remnant of the Old Days of Dark Lords and magical war. But for Pratchett, of course, goblins aren't just tiny evil filthy things - and their story is much more about the evils of humans than any other monster. Have you read as far as Snuff, and do you think it feels different to the books that come before it? Were you expecting more of a mix of Pride & Prejudice and Midsomer Murders, and how do you feel about it being more of “howcatchem”? Was it a weird choice to take Vimes so far out of his element in his final book, or does it do us all a favour by showing us what his retirement might possibly look like? What's the weirdest rule in crocket? How great are goblins???* And what's your goblin name? Don't get distracted by the new Clacks tower - join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat86. Guest Freyja Stokes (he/she) was one of the first recipients of UniSA's Pratchett Scholarship, and finished her Masters thesis in 2023. It's titled ‘The turtle moves : how Terry Pratchett's Discworld does vernacular theory', and it's available via the UniSA library. Freyja is also a keen cosplayer and crafty person, and you find her and her creations on Facebook and other social media. You can find episode notes and errata on our web site. Next month we take a break from the few remaining Pratchett novels to play a game that we promise is simpler than crocket: Discworld: Ankh-Morpork, the fan favourite of the board games! Get your questions in via email (chat@pratchatpodcast.com), or social media using the hashtag #Pratchat87. * This one is rhetorical. They're really great.

With all the talk about Crimson Jack in Skeleton Crew we felt this was a perfect time to share another Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics episode! Issue #108 “Forever Crimson!” (2019), is a special continuation of Issue #50 “The Crimson Forever” (1981). This was part of Marvel's 80th Anniversary celebration in 2019 where they added this issue 33 years after the classic Star Wars series ended in 1986.    Richard and Sarah break down “Forever Crimson!” - it's story, artwork, and the HUGE amount of Star Wars EU Easter eggs! Jaxxon and Amaiza are back! Valance the Hunter and Domina Tagge make an appearance. This comic even references vornskr and the witches of Dathomir. Could there be more references to pop culture in this comic than SKELETON CREW?? Terry Pratchett famously said that “dark lords should be rationed” - but there is so much more to say about evil in fantasy than the cliche of the dark lord in a sinister tower at the bottom right of your map! On today’s episode of Mythmakers, Julia Golding and Jacob Rennaker look at the philosophical underpinnings of evil, starting with the Inklings. Moving from a discussion of the importance of the Fall in C.S. Lewis, to the purgatorial world of choices in Charles Williams, we complete this part of the journey by examining evil as a theme in Middle-earth. Julia and Jacob contest that there isn't actually a simple dark lord embodying evil in Tolkien - the location for evil is far more interesting than that! Join us in Part 1 of this discussion as we delve into all these topics and more…   For more information on the Oxford Centre for Fantasy, our writing courses, and to check out our awesome social media content visit: Website: https://centre4fantasy.com/website Instagram: https://centre4fantasy.com/Instagram Facebook: https://centre4fantasy.com/Facebook TikTok: https://centre4fantasy.com/tiktok

Star Wars Theory

The Krath were led by the Dark Jedi Aleema Keto and her brother Satal Keto, who were descendants of the ancient Sith Lord Exar Kun. They were known for their use of dark side magic, particularly the power of illusion and deception, to control and manipulate their enemies. The Krath Warriors gained a significant following and established a stronghold on the planet of Empress Teta, which they renamed as the Krath Holy City. From there, they launched attacks on nearby planets, expanding their territory and power. Their reign of terror was eventually ended by a coalition of Jedi, Republic troops, and local rebels, who mounted a successful assault on the Krath Holy City. Aleema and Satal were captured and brought to justice, effectively putting an end to the Krath Warriors. Despite their defeat, the legacy of the Krath Warriors continued to influence later Sith factions and their use of dark side magic. The Krath Warriors first appeared in the "Tales of the Jedi" comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics in the mid-1990s. Specifically, they were introduced in the "Dark Lords of the Sith" storyline, which ran from 1994 to 1995 and chronicled the rise of the Sith Empire during the Old Republic era. The "Dark Lords of the Sith" storyline was written by Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson, with art by Christian Gossett and Mike Barreiro. The storyline introduced a number of new characters and factions to the Star Wars universe, including the Krath Warriors, and was well-received by fans and critics alike. The "Tales of the Jedi" comic book series is considered a significant part of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, which includes books, comics, and other media that expand upon the stories and characters of the Star Wars universe beyond the main films. While the Expanded Universe is no longer considered canon in the wake of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, the stories and characters introduced in "Tales of the Jedi" continue to be popular among Star Wars fans and have had a lasting impact on the franchise as a whole. In addition to their use of dark side magic, the Krath Warriors were skilled in hand-to-hand combat and weapons training. They often wielded vibroblades, energy shields, and blaster pistols in battle, making them a formidable force to be reckoned with. The Krath Warriors also had a strict hierarchy, with Aleema and Satal Keto at the top as the leaders of the faction. Beneath them were the Krath warlords and generals, who commanded their armies and executed their orders. While the Krath Warriors were ultimately defeated, their legacy lived on in the Star Wars universe. The tactics and techniques they used were studied by later Sith factions, including the Sith Empire that emerged during the Old Republic era and the Sith Lords that rose to power during the time of the Galactic Empire. In the end, the Krath Warriors were a reminder of the dangers of the dark side of the Force and the destructive power that it can unleash if left unchecked. Their defeat served as a cautionary tale for those who would seek to use the Force for personal gain or to control others, and their story continues to be studied by scholars and historians in the Star Wars universe. Another interesting aspect of the Krath Warriors is their connection to the ancient Sith Lord Exar Kun. Exar Kun was a Jedi Knight who turned to the dark side and became a Sith Lord, eventually leading a crusade against the Jedi Order. After his defeat, Exar Kun's spirit was trapped on the planet Yavin 4, where it was discovered by Aleema and Satal Keto. They were able to use the dark side of the Force to resurrect his spirit and gain his knowledge and power, which they used to strengthen the Krath Warriors. The Krath Warriors' connection to Exar Kun highlights the importance of the Sith's history and mythology in their ideology. The Sith draw upon the teachings and traditions of their predecessors, building upon them to create their own legacy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The story of this little known cult is WILD. Was the cult leader, Terri Hoffman, capable of some kind of actual mind control? It honestly feels possible. This New Age guru who spoke of reincarnation, astral planes, transcending the trappings of your Earthly bodies, and fighting "black lords" in other non-physical planes of existence seems to have broken down the minds of numerous followers and pushed them into committing suicide, right after they made her the sole beneficiary of their wills. Terri was the daughter of impoverished laborers who became the leader of a movement that appealed not to confused teens, disillusioned college students, and random spiritual seekers in the late 1960s when so many cults were forming in America, but also to educated people well into their careers and adult lives, like a Yale-educated college professor. Ten of her followers would die via either odd suicides, murders, or strange accidents. Another follower vanished. The Devil is in the details, and Terri Hoffman comes across like an actual devil in this story, and man are the details of this story insane...Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation:  The Bad Magic Charity for August Camp Easton, where we will be hosting our 2022 Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camp. Mailbag Question 1.) Armando Casanova - Hey Brian, I absolutely love your podcast and i'm very excited for the new app it looks amazing! Please keep up the great work! I had a question regarding Anakin's force ghost. From what I understand in the new canon to become a force ghost one has to go through a specific training (example Yoda in the clone wars) and then once they do before they die they disappear and become one with the force. As we saw at the end of Return of the Jedi Anakin appears as a force ghost despite meeting none of these criteria as I assume he did not do the training or disappear when he died. I find it hard to believe that Anakin did the training during the clone wars and I did not think it was possible for him to do it as a Sith. In addition why does he appear as he did in Revenge of the Sith? I always assumed it was because that is when "the good died in him" but that doesn't fully make sense to me because when he died, he died believing in the light side in a sense. I have scavenged the internet looking for an answer and the best I could find was that the new canon has not revealed the answer. My question is do I have any misunderstandings with my knowledge about force ghosts, and if not how did Anakin become a force ghost? If the answer is truly we do not know, I would love to hear your best guess at an answer. 2.) Anthony Kane - Hey Brian, I hope all is well with you and the family! First off, I love your show and passion. I just recently found the podcast and have been blitzing through the episodes. Great work all around. My question is rather random but I've been listening to a lot of Star Wars content lately and I hear some people say things like “this book is considered canon for now” or “this is canon until Disney says otherwise” etc. Is it common for Disney to take things “out” of canon? I just started really getting into SW (on my 16th canon book now) and am curious if I need to worry about the stories I am investing in now being removed our changed in the future. Some people seem to discuss this as if it is not an uncommon practice and it had me a little confused. Any clarification would be appreciated! 3.) Jamie Holbeche - Hey Brian, I've started the Ahsoka novel and there's been a few contradictions with the last season of Clone Wars (Not gonna drop spoilers for you). But her lightsabers, as seen in the trailers, are blue. But in the novel, they were green when she fought Maul. And I've not read all of Ahsoka yet but people are saying there are contradictions to how she survived Order 66 etc. So I was just wondering, is the novel Ahsoka still canon? Or are parts of it now non-canon? 4.) Usef Waly - Hey Brian and Richard, I'm sorry I couldn't provide you with feedback for the app beta, I'm really excited to see it live though. I had a question as I'm rewatching the mandalorian , whether or not anyone revealed how the tracking fobs worked, like how bounty hunters just got trackers which perfectly pinpointed the location of their bounty (just like a video game hmmm)Also, I'm watching clone wars series for the first time as per your recommendation And your review of Lords of the Sith was spot on .. it doesn't overuse the Dark Lords , even though it should be about them , it preserves a bit of the aura around them , or maybe that's cuz I love them so much I'm emphasising they points I like !! Hahaha why do I always love the bad guys !! U should definitely promote your book ranking more And I'd love it if you ranked your favourite Star Wars villains (and by the way, whether or not you even consider them villains could be the topic of an entire episode) You know I Love your podcast Original score composed by Brook Munro LIKE/FOLLOW the SWCP on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/starwarscanonpodcast FOLLOW me on Twitter at: @SWCanonPodcast E-MAIL me at: starwarscanonpodcast@gmail.com Help support me on Patreon! www.patreon.com/starwarscanonpodcast --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/starwarscanonpodcast/support
