#301: Lego Movie - Die Klemmbaustein Story

Welcome to Even Baddies Wear Helmets! The podcast all about kids' telly, and the wonderful grown-ups who make it happen. We're back with a few more episodes of ‘Stabilisers' - our little mini-series that nestles snugly between the Series 1 tricycle and the big-kid-bike of Series 2. So guess what? It turns out everything IS awesome. How do we know? Because in this episode, we chat to the brilliant Matthew Ashton, Vice President of Design at the LEGO Group. Matthew has worked for LEGO for 21 years, was Head Judge on the original version of LEGO Masters UK (Channel 4) and - importantly for Even Baddies purposes - was an Executive Producer on the LEGO Movies and the Unikitty series for Cartoon Network! We've had a few requests from listeners for an episode covering the merchandising side of children's content - and we couldn't think of anyone better to give us an insight into the relationship between kids, TV and film, franchises and their toys. In this episode, we learn what ‘toyetic' means, we discover how writers can feed into toy design, and - in what is potentially a world first, two gay people from the Wirral talk about being gay and from the Wirral. My guest today is the toy designer Matthew Ashton - Vice President of design at Lego; Executive Producer on the Lego Movies; head judge on Lego Masters UK; creator of Unikitty and the man behind Lego's first ever LGBTQ+ set – the rainbow inspired Everyone is Awesome. The set represents a huge milestone both for Lego and for Matthew personally, who has spoken out about the struggles he faced growing up as an LGBTQ+ kid in the 1980s and 90s. He says: ‘being told what I should play with, how I should walk, how I should talk, what I should wear – the message I always got was that somehow I was ‘wrong'. I wish, as a kid, I had looked at the world and thought: ‘This is going to be OK, there's a place for me'. I wish I'd seen an inclusive statement that said ‘everyone is awesome'” - and so, he made it himself. He's putting it out there into the world to mark the start of Pride Month.   Here, we talk about:   - Growing up under section 28 - ‘Throwing like a girl' - Learning to ‘breathe' for the first time - Lego (& other life changing moments) - Breaking down (even when you have the best job in the world) - …and building back up again - Why therapy takes patience - Finding purpose, now Follow Matthew on Instagram @matthew__ashton or on Twitter @matthew__ashton Follow Helen on social media @MsHelenRussell How To Be Sad, the book, is out now. The small stuff is the things that bring a smile to your significant other, and give them the feeling that you really care. Our guest this week, like all kittens, Uni_Kitty likes to watch - and she is a keen observer of human interactions — kinky, vanilla, etc — all in an attempt to develop a relationship philosophy that jives harmoniously with human nature. A boy looks up at his father in search of answers, and the father hears him but does not see him, for his eyes are locked on the turned back of the man who had just saved them. The man was trying his best to flee down the trash-alley and to the east, out of sight, but his progress was halted every few meters or so, in order to catch his breath and tame his eclectic collection of coughs and wheezes. “But Dad he’s a hero!” Says the little boy, “He saved us from Cinema Robert’s awful posts!” The father nods slowly still gazing at their savior, who stands doubled over with one hand against the alley wall, hacking up some phlegm. “I know son...” The father says. “But why is he running away Dad?”, Asks the boy, as their savior pulls out his inhaler. “Because we have to chase him..” The father says and as soon as the words leave his lips, buzzing on the western wind a smattering of angry voices pierce their ears. Under his breath, the savior swears and attempts to hasten his egress, the intense effort of such an undertaking apparent in his high frequency of breath, and frantic pumping of arms: traditional signifiers of immense athletic output, now at conflict with the reality of his pace. The little boy looks nervously in the direction of the voices, “But he didn’t do anything wrong!” He says. The father nods and takes a moment to close his eyes as their savior finally rounds the corner and disappears. The father then kneels eye-to-eye with his son as loose kernels of asphalt dance to the rumble of stampeding feet and says, “Because he’s the hero Twitter deserves but not the one it needs right now..” And then the father quickly pulls his son into a crouched embrace, shielding him from the swell of angry mob that rushes past them, pitchforks and torches holding up the sky. “He went through the alley!” A mob voice shouts, “Lets get that Grandma hater!” another shouts, “Racist!” adds one more, and when the mob finally clears the father releases his son, and concludes the hardest lesson the boy will ever learn, “And so we’ll hunt him..” The father says, “Because he can take it, because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful poster...A Jack Allison.” Topics discussed on today's show include: Vag-eye-na, Jack & M*v*e B*B, Who’s Running...A Great Campaign?, Epstein Theories, and phone calls from the Slurpfam! He gives some insight into his announcing gig on the hit NBC show, World Of Dance, and gives props for the comedy chops of friend and fellow voice actor, Fred Tatasciore as well as the late Robin Williams. Ep 251 - Navigating the #Jobocalypse with Jon Aguilar: What Kind of Smith Are You?

Mixed Mental Arts

After Bryan and I did our episode on the #Jobocalypse, someone rightly commented on the Mixed Mental Arts subreddit that this was all great but what practically do I do? Well, this episode is a practical response to that. Mixed Mental Arts is not just about identifying problems but empowering you to solve them for yourselves. Part of that is going to be teaching you how to learn, unlearn and relearn. That's something the Mixed Mental Arts community will be doing taking everything that's in The Straight-A Conspiracy and everything else we've learned in the last 200 interviews, breaking those ideas down into easy, bite-sized chunks and giving them away. The other thing we're going to be doing is introducing you to people who have made the transition into the new economy to give you a playbook on how you can do that too. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Jon Aguilar. Jon Aguilar works in what may be the oldest profession. No, he's not a prostitute. He works with dry stone. It literally doesn't get much older than that. Stone on top of stone with no mortar. And yet, Jon Aguilar is thriving in the new economy. That's because he's transformed this oldest of professions by bringing to it a spirit of exploration and Motivation 3.0. Jon reads voraciously. He's constantly rethinking his craft. And he's always learning, unlearning and relearning. In the end, surviving in the new economy doesn't mean you have to become a computer coder. Far from it. In fact, you may end up doing the job you were doing in the old economy BUT you approach it in a very different spirit. You think of yourself and approach your work as a craftsman. In this episode, Jon describes how in 2007 he really started to take his craft seriously as something to be mastered and refined and the books and ideas that were useful to him in evolving his own approach up to this point. Jon is also a fount of t-shirt ideas. I'm sure the Unicorn (@madonna_matt) and Unikitty (@nicoleleepage) will run with some of them. Personally, I'm going to put in a request for "Embrace The Suck" and "What Kind of Smith Are You?" Maybe an "Ideasmith" t-shirt. I defer to them. Pretty sure that something awesome will emerge from this great improv we're all in. You can find out more of the tools Jon is using to navigate the #Jobocalypse here including resources for people looking to become or looking to connect with apprentices. Jon's Stonesmith business = www.heritageearthandstone.com Jon's Facebook = "Heritage Earth & Stone" Jon's Instagram = "jonaguilar_designworks" The Consortium of Craftsmen, Innovators & Thinkers = www.throughstonegroup.com The Consortium's Instagram + Facebook + YouTube channel (will be online by May 1st) = "Throughstone Group" [mbm_book_grid id="1287"] And if you want to buy a sweet Jobocalypse t-shirt and support Mixed Mental Arts at the SAME TIME then go here.
