Like many serial killers, Maury Travis became over-confident. In the summer of 2002, after reading a story in the newspaper about one of his victims, he mailed a letter to the local newspaper offering them information on the location of another. He was careful not to leave any fingerprints or DNA evidence before mailing it, so how did they track him down? This episode originally aired on Serial Killers in July 2018. There was no evidence in Maury Travis' childhood of arson or animal abuse, often seen as early warning signs for serial killers. And he didn't appear to have been a victim of abuse from either of his parents. So what made this seemingly normal kid turn into a man who would rape, torture and murder as many as twenty women? Hey listeners! On this episode, we learn about a person who didn't have the worst upbringing but would certainly seem to have come from it. Maury Travis would have his victims in his basement where he tortured and strangled them. He would be in and out of jail many times, to obviously not learn his lesson. He would go on to murder 20+ woman, some of which I discuss in this episode. Missouri killer Maury Travis is better known as the Videotape Killer. His disturbing VHS collection was uncovered in a search of his home, along with plans to build a basement torture chamber. The killer's MO was to target primarily black sex workers, whose disappearances are less likely to be investigated. Travis died before he could be convicted, but is believed to have murdered around 17 women. His first victim, 33-year-old Alysa Greenwade, was found 21 years ago today. S2:Episode 3 - Carla puts the gruesome activity of Maury Travis under the microscope- a man who inflicted torture on his targets and a blunt danger to women across St. Louis, Missouri. Remorseless in his motives, but choosing ultimately his own death over the accountability a jail sentence would bring… The only remaining mystery is the true scale of his victims, in numbers. Phil recounts the savage killing of Scottish teenager Kriss Donald. A ratcheting of racial and gang tension in his corner of Glasgow came to its violent end, with Donald attacked and abducted by a group of five men of Pakistani descent. Attempts to flee prosecution abroad by 3 of the suspects only sought to bring forth their unprecedented extraditions back to the UK, and further widen the discussion of how racially-motivated murder can be presented to the public in different ways. #theunspeakableisspoken
The second half of this week's episodes is now posted, and BOY, it is not for the faint of heart - we're covering torturers! Featuring a Hello Kitty-decorated house of horrors, a foster mom from hell, and thankfully, an incredible story of survival. We promise, our episodes won't always be this gruesome, but these notorious cases are compelling, fascinating, and horrifying all at the same time. Join us and listen in as we yell, cry, and definitely, feel nauseous. We can get through this together, twisted listeners, and afterwards, we'll all slam some (maybe spiked) eggnog and watch some cat videos on YouTube to recover. Maury Troy Travis took the hatred that he had for himself out on the innocent, plain and simple. Maury will go down with a big question mark after his name, When did the killings really start? How many people did he kill? Did he have any accomplices? Who were the women on the tapes? The only person that can answer most of these questions is now dead and took these many secrets to the grave. We dive deep into the world of a sadomasochistic serial killer and try and find some answers.
Maury Travis was a very, very disturbed man. Since he was 14-years-old he fantasized about murder. As an adult, he turned his basement into a torture chamber where he killed at least 17 women, all the while videotaping their suffering and eventual death. Well, it the very final episode of 2020 and day 12 of our Nightmare Before Christmas series. So far we have traveled back in time and to other countries, like the UK, Australia, and Japan. In this last episode, we are going into our own backyard. A St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter opens an anonymous letter sent to him from someone praising him for a recent story he wrote about a murdered sex worker. However, this was not the normal fan mail as it included a map with an ‘X’ pointing to where the next dead sex worker would be found dead. Authorities go to the site in West Alton unsure of what they would find. Sadly, ‘X’ did mark the spot but this was just the beginning of a sadistic serial killer who wouldn’t stop until he made a mistake on his home computer.Jen and Cam would like to thank our very own wise men: Edward October from @octoberpodVHS who does our listener discretion and Nico @wetalkofdreams who does our music and produces us. Author and former Police Officer Ken Dye is our guest. He talks about his police career and how it lead to writing multiple books. Ken also discusses a serial killer who terrorized the St. Louis area with multiple killings. The killer preyed on women who were often drug addicted and were sex workers in the area. The Bi-State Strangler said he murdered 17 people, some claim the number could be as high as 20, while other investigators think it is less. The strangler also videotaped the torture and killing of some of the victims. He talks about serial killers and more importantly the astonishing commitment of those officers that investigated and arrested him, ending his reign of terror.
