Gertrude Baniszewski fell into depression and financial struggles after many failed marriages. She was a also a single mother of 7, which added more stress to her life. She had a tough upbringing and many could say a tough life. She would find herself lucky when a man named Lester Likens offered her a weekly income. In exchange Gertrude would allow his daughters to temporarily move in while he traveled for work for a few months. This is when Gertrude would take all her anger and hatred out on Sylvia and Jenny Likens. The mistreatment was mostly directed towards 16 year old Sylvia. It's possible that Gertrude was jealous of Sylvia's beauty, youth, and charisma. Gertrude would encourage her kids and neighborhood kids to join in on the torment of the young girl. Not only will you find yourself angered with the things he young girl went through, but the sentencings are just as infuriating.

Hey, everybody...This week's episode was an absolutely horrific story. Canadians do their cults crazy. The first one that comes to mind is the Anthill Kids. This cult isn't that bad, but it is in the Gertrude Baniszewski and Mother Anna's House of Prayer level of depravity. Its called His Rest Christian Fellowship, and there is literally nothing online about it that I could find other than a 2 minute news story from when they were arrested. I found the book when I was looking for a Canadian cult to cover. This story of course has a crazy woman who thinks she's God's prophet, and there is lots of abuse at her hands, plus insane interpretations of the bible. There are also vulgar displays of judicial malpractice, although the police did a great job getting these people to the courtroom. It also has 2 incredibly brave kids. So, give it a listen, and tell someone about it. And this is a case of be careful what you wish for, because it was absolutely horrible. Paul and I were pissed off pretty much the entire episode. But this case needs to be better known. We are the first podcast to cover it, and I want other podcasts to cover it too. This week we're talking about the murder of 16 year old Sylvia Likens and the family behind it. Join us as we go over the details of this case.

In the 1960s, Sylvia Likens lived in southern Boone County, Indiana with her family which consisted of her father, Lester Likens, mother Betty Likens, fraternal twins, Danny and Diana, and another set of fraternal twins, Bennie and Jenny. Sylvia was the middle child between the two sets of twins. The Likens family were very poor and Sylvia's father worked many odd jobs, even traveling with the carnival to sell food from a concession stand, but it is said that the children were happy and taken care of. In June of 1965, Sylvia's mother, Betty was arrested for shoplifting, leaving Lester to come up with a way to support his children while she was away. Lester found his two daughters, Sylvia and Jenny at a home near theirs known as the Baniszewski home. Lester decided he would "board" his daughters at Gertrude Baniszewski's home, paying her $20 a week to take care of them while he went with the carnival to bring in some money. Gertrude had 7+ children of her own, and the Baniszewskis were also very poor with the home being filthy, in disarray, and lacking adequate food and sleeping arrangements but Lester had not known this when he left his daughters. Bennie and Danny were sent to live with their grandparents, and Dianna had been 19, married, and living on her own. What would happen during the months of June 1965 to October 1965 consist of unspeakable horrors which Sylvia and Jenny endured. Sylvia being punished far worse, enduring unimaginable torture by not only the Baniszewskis but other neighborhood children. Some say it is due to Gertrude and her oldest daughter, Paula's jealousy of Sylvia coupled with Gertrude not receiving on time payment from the Likens but nothing that Sylvia ever could have done would make her deserving of this torture, and ultimately, horrific death. Since then, the Likens family has been plagued by a series of tragedies, and this case is one that will never be forgotten in Indiana. What can we say? This is the most brutal and disturbing case we've covered. There's only one victim, but she was put through immense amounts of hell and torture. CORRECTION: In the episode, we say that this took place in the 70's. We didn't math very well. It took place in 1965. Gertrude, AKA Satan had a traumatic childhood that effected her for the rest of her life. She took in 2 sisters, a teenager and a kid, whose parents were traveling for work. What she did to the older of the two girls is horrific, but she also got multiple neighborhood kids in on this sick train of abuse. Not to mention, her own kids who were also active participants. This is the type of horror movie script where in the movies, the victim comes back and kills everyone. Sadly, that's not what happened here. Its brutal, disturbing and heartbreaking. In 1965, 16-year-old Sylvia Likens and her sister were sent to the home of a family friend, Gertrude Baniszewski, while her parents were traveling. The father offered Gertrude $20/week to care for his daughters, but when one payment was late that's when all hell broke loose. Sylvia Likens never made it out alive.

The story of Sylvia Liken is one that has been classified as the worst murder in Indiana. In 1965 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sylvia Likens was killed by her caregiver, Gertrude Baniszewski with co- conspirators including her own children. Their tortured and abused the 16 year old for three months before Sylvia finally gave in to her injuries which included the likes of being beaten & starved amongst other forms of torture. She would wind up with 150 wounds across her body as reported by her autopsy report. All of which were inflicted by Baniszewski or at her behest. Support the show

I kept getting recommended this over and over again so finally I caved and decided to share the story about Sylvia Likens. I definitely think in the future I just need to stay away from stories like these, they mess with me way too much.
