In the final episode of The Clientele Podcast, host Robin Allender talks to singer and guitarist Alasdair MacLean again, this time focussing on songwriting. It's a chance for Alasdair to look back at the early days of the band and talk about learning to play the guitar and write music. It's a very Beatles-heavy episode, but Robin and Alasdair also talk about Madness, Boards of Canada, Burial and Subway Sect, and many other musicians who helped Alasdair to develop and expand his songwriting. There is also some chat about music theory, particularly relating to chord progressions, and the idea of songwriting being a combination of technical understanding and instinct. Also, what connects The Clientele and The Great British Bake Off? Max Tundra is Ben Jacobs A man that was a child that grew up in London. As pointed out on his bandcamp, he went to the same school as Jude Law and a Chemical Brother, but didn't know them. In this disposable content age, there's an undeniable urge to go for quantity over quality is there not? The music Ben makes as Max Tundra comes as rarely as a celestial event. We forget the rising and falling of the sun each day but we don't forget a total eclipse now do we? This is how it felt when Mocky and I came across the LP “Mastered by guy at the exchange”. We were without sun for a while. In an unknown land that felt Most welcoming and yet most peculiar. It was genuinely new music. Something so rare that still feels fresh all these years later. Here's what hyper pop bloke A. G. Cook said of Max Tundra's legacy: “‘Mastered by Guy at the Exchange' is a true cult album - a playful monolith that sounds both nothing and everything like the 2000s. Stumbling across it as a teenager, it reinforced a hunch I had: that music is a place where anything could happen, and total chaos could be held together by the lightest of pop hooks. There's an oddly British quality to Max Tundra's work, a soft and polite maximalism - pioneering, eccentric and infinitely remixable.” Ben Jacobs invented hyper pop As they say in the UK FACTS It's a good time to be a Max Tundra fan as domino has reissued his first three studio albums to be found HERE 2000s Some Best Friend You Turned Out to Be, 2002's Mastered by Guy at the Exchange, and the 2008 masterwork Parallax Error Beheads You. We get into a lot of his formative years and thankfully he kept so much of his sonic ramblings from that time and they can be found on his band camp page It's a real treasure trove. Here it is What a legend. If you've never heard of him before, I'm so glad I get to make the intro. He's a true original and a very nice man Please welcome on the show Max Tundra

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 73rd episode of "VideoFuzzy," reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 2,900 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Six Seasons and a Movie," commentary on the most of six seasons of "Community" as rebroadcast on IFC that I've archived and cataloged in my current collection. In my Cross Connections, I highlight Patricia Belcher as a Golden Thread, and Christopher Plummer in Fond Reflections. I add a Crossover segment that highlights actor Kevin Corrigan's appearance in both my classic and current collections, and a noteworthy career arc twist. Also, some followup comments on the second season finale of "Damages." In my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD), I have cataloged through disc 1,100. I talk about the PBS pledge drive presentation of "Celtic Thunder," a video for Max Tundra's "Will Get Fooled Again," comments on "The Unusuals," "Harper's Island," "Breaking Bad" and "South Park," along with the series finale of ABC's "Life on Mars." I found I recorded a public address from my cable provider in 2009 regarding their negotiations with a local network affiliate to rebroadcast their signal. Also, shoutout to the "All About Agatha" podcast and their recent comments on "The Adventure of the Clapham Cook." In my Current Collection (digital recordings), along with 103 of 110 episodes of "Community," I archived the presentation by the House managers in the second impeachment Senate trial of former President Trump. I felt it was a well organized presentation of the evidence and it was cool to have it in my collection. Also, comments on AMC's presentation of "The Salisbury Poisonings." In streaming, from Hulu, I've been enjoying "Mrs. America," "The Handmaid's Tale," and seasons 4 and 5 of "Damages." And under Off the Shelf, I got together with my friend Jesse Zimmerman of The Average Movie Nerd recently and we enjoyed "The Informant!" "Wag the Dog" and "Burn After Reading." Fun times. TOP TEN: Here's a "top ten" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort. Enjoy!

In 1999 Daphne and Celeste burned pop music to the ground. They arrived from New York and released their debut single “ooh Stick you” and almost instantly had a hit. But there was more to Daphne and Celeste then the kitch pop tracks. They couldn’t take their newfound pop career seriously. They were astonished by straight faced interviewers asking their favourite vegetable. They would turn cheery kid’s tv presenters to defensive grumps as they lied their way through interviews and giggled uncontrollably. Essentially they were inventing trolling. The media cooked up controversy around their second record “U.G.L.Y” charging Daphne and Celeste with advocating bullying. The situation today would surely require media analysts or PR experts but Daphne and Celeste effortlessly batted the controversy away with eye-rolls and bored answers. It was quite spectacular. The girls wanted to see how far they could push it which led to them booking their infamous appearance at the Reading. They ignored all advise and performed to a crowd of 50,000 furious rock fans at the Reading Festival during which they were continuously pelted with bottles food and as you will here a wheelchair. After the breakup of Daphne and Celeste, both girls had successful acting careers. Daphne (Real Name Karen Di Concetto) is also a successful television writer (She was exec Producer of “Recovery Road” on ABC) and Celeste continues to act (she previously appeared in an episode of 30 Rock). Recently producer Max Tundra contacted the girls about reforming and this collaboration spawned a successful album and reunion tour. The genius of Daphne and Celeste was they didn’t pretend to be anything other then what they were, which was a flash in the pan novelty act. But weirdly it is this very self awareness that has us still talking about them 18 years later.
