Fall is the time for the record industry to unleash a torrent of reissues, box sets, live albums, and all kinds of other sorts of vault releases. Yes, it’s admittedly a bit of a chase for easy cash, but as a collector I love it. Give me that compilation of pre-Velvet Underground songs Lou Reed wrote as a songwriter for Pickwick Records. Give me those box sets versons of my favorite records featuring demos and live tracks. Give me straight ahead compilatons and live albums. Give me all of this stuff! If you are anything like me, you’ll love this overview of those sorts of releases. And yes, there is one track here that doesn’t really fit the format…yet it sort of does. I recently picked up Never Understood: The Jesus and Mary Chain, the memoirs of J&MC brothers Jim and William Reid, and I was intrigued to find out that a few years after the band broke up they both helped out their sister, Linda, in a musical project called Sister Vanilla. Yes, you can certainly tell that she learned a lot from her big brothers. This needs to also be reissued!  For more info, including setlists, head to […]

There is a reason why we fall in love with the tones of songs from decades ago. The player, the phrasing, the technique, the gear. All of this ignites and inspires a guitar player. Of course that gear has become harder and harder to obtain as time goes on. Plexi's to JCM's. Tweed to Silverface. Burst Les Paul to Korina Explorer. Pre-CBS Tele to Grunge Jagstang. If you want the real deal you will have to pay for it… if you don't mind a newer reissue. then there might still be hope. But… Are reissues the same as the original? Do they cost more? Why would people want the old model? Should you pay more to have it intentionally beat up? What is a clone? Is it better than a reissue? Who does them right? Who does them wrong? Does weight play a factor? What about the finish? Is time on its side? Who are reissues marketed for? And the automobile industry… when are you going to jump on board? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Lloyd, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

Start with Ken and Rob's idea to use their formula of record reissues to move away from their previous unilateral focus of Disco, Soul, and Gospel of the 60s and 70s as they found trust among artist scenes that left them inspired in their youth. Stay through stories about the decades-long chase of working with records they believed a new generation of fans was ready to discover. The episode explores the label owner's experiences unraveling the sonic singularities of groups such as Duster, Unwound, Everyone Asked About You, Karate, Rex, Tsunami, Bedhead, Codeine, 90 Day Men, The Hated and Chisel. Look for a similar countdown of my 40 favorite new albums of the year in two weeks. But that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” series. Once again, we’re opening and closing the show with covers of the classic. The opening version is by Superchunk leader Mac McCaughan, recorded live on May 16, 2015. The closing remake is by a Canadian band called 63 Monroe who released a couple of EP’s and singles back in the early 80’s. Like I do every week, however, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. Author and cartoonist Art Spiegelman is familiar with the hysteria surrounding certain library books. In today's episode, he tells NPR's Scott Simon about how comic book burnings during his childhood in the 1950s weren't all that different from book bans taking place across the country today. Spiegelman says that though they tackled difficult subjects, he found then – and continues to find today – great emotional power in comics, such as his reissued collection Breakdowns. And he says he's felt deeply unsettled by the ongoing challenges against these kinds of books.
