This week I am joined by musician, author, and songwriter Ezra Furman, who picked the Kathleen Hanna documentary THE PUNK SINGER to discuss. We talk about Ezra's process of writing her lyrics, the headspace of making a record, the directness of Kathleen Hanna's lyrics, and how her lyrical approach changed from Bikini Kill to Le Tigre, the notion of audiences and bands protecting each other, Kathleen urging 'girls to the front' and how Ezra still is working on that at her own shows, being misunderstood as an artist, how the film shows self-documentation coming into full bloom during this era, how even the greatest bands have to break up, myths in rock, how the film reveals Kathleen's illness that led to the break up of Le Tigre, gender bias in the medical system and the exhaustion of psychological burnout in music, Ezra's experience having to stand up for and stand up to her fans and more!EZRA FURMAN: https://ezrafurman.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss.

A special joint-parsha episode for the week of Matot-Masei: Agnes & Ezra in conversation about this week's double parsha (strangely, the first double parsha of the year this year). Really I think this was just a very difficult and upsetting Torah portion and we were both afraid to do it alone. This is a throwback to the first era of this podcast, when we had rambling conversations about the holidays and asked four questions. And our questions this time around are not even questions. They are just four topics that we were too busy/lazy/excited to turn into questions. They are four rooms in a little bungalow. Join us on an intimate walkthrough: Q1. Cities of asylum? Q2. Horrific war? Q3. Vows? Q4. The end of the book of Bamidbar? Also: this episode has noticeable technical flaws! Editing: weird. Timing: off, due to some delay issue. Sound: pretty low quality, Agnes's audio gets better after a rocky start but it's all pretty low-fi. What are we, professionals? Chazak Chazak, see you in the book of Deuteronomy babes. [Music by Ezra Furman & Sam Durkes in a little practice room in Los Angeles, February 7th, 2017.]

The book of B'midbar is a book full of conflict. And so that was the book that Ezra Furman suggested we talk about. It's appropriate - she's a punk musician and B'midbar is kind of the punk book of the Torah. I think you'll find it interesting to hear a a side of Ezra that you won't always see on stage, a soft, reflective side. She will scream at you from the stage, but one on one, when she's working through ideas, she's very quiet and deliberate. You can tell that she believes everything she says and and believes that how you say it and when you say it are extremely important, too. Buy Rabbi David Kasher's book, ParshaNut.
