BEST BEAR is a Philadelphia based indie rock band formed in late 2019 and active since 2020. The band works within a slow burn post emo framework, with a sound often compared to The Beths, Sweet Pill, Hop Along, Snail Mail, and early Paramore, emphasizing dynamic pacing, emotional clarity, and carefully constructed songs.Best Bear operates as a rotating collective of Philadelphia based musicians, with songs written by Blue Barnett forming the foundation across recordings and live shows, allowing the lineup to shift without changing the band's core identity. The project has become a consistent presence in the local and regional music scene while maintaining a clear and recognizable sound. In 2022, Best Bear released When, which gained attention from WXPN, Radio 104.5, and a range of regional and college radio stations. The song “Gaslighter” has received consistent airplay and remains in regular rotation. Best Bear is currently writing their second anticipated full length album, continuing to build on their songwriting with a focus on emotional directness and intention. Thanks for listening!!! It's Matt's personal pick, and in honour of the upcoming Oscars he's decided to go back to where it all began... "it" being Amy Adams' long unfinished road toward Oscar glory. On the way to meet with an independent artist in the South, newlywed art dealer Madeleine is convinced by her husband, George, that they should stop to meet his family in North Carolina. Madeleine's affluent lifestyle clashes with the family, but she befriends George's wide-eyed and pregnant sister-in-law, Ashley, who is nearing her due date. Through the family, Madeleine gains greater insight into George's character. (Sourced from Letterboxd). Turns out a lot of people over on Letterboxd think this movie is really boring? Not so our three hosts, who are all in for a movie about complex family dynamics that doesn't make the same mistakes certain other films made (*cough* The Family Stone *cough*). Over in the Pop Corner we talk recent gigs (The Beths and Laneway festival), Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, the video game TR-49, The Bride (brain attack!), Sirāt, the Wellington Central Library reopening, No Other Choice, The Testament of Ann Lee, The Moment and a long discussion of the Khia Asylum. While to the casual observer it might seem as if New Zealand’s The Beths appeared seemingly out of nowhere in or around the summer of 2023, they’ve in fact been making their extremely catchy brand of indie pop for almost ten years now. The Auckland-based quartet’s most recent album, Straight Line is a Lie, was released last year by Anti-. We spoke to founding members Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pearce for this episode in which they talk about how songs by Rilo Kiley, Ben Folds Five, and The Shins--among others--were formative for them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ranking The Beatles
#178 - Octopus' Garden with The Beths

Ranking The Beatles

Originally released March 16, 2021Sometimes, all it takes to write a signature song is...quitting your band. During a sabbatical from the tense White Album sessions of 1968, a trip on Peter Sellers' boat gave Ringo the inspiration for "Octopus's Garden." With a little help from his friends, George in particular, he was able to put together something that's incredibly charming and fun, and the last example of the band all pulling together to support their beloved drummer; it's a stellar performance all around, and a sonic gem, along with the rest of Abbey Road. As childlike and saccharine as it may be though, is it possible this is a much deeper song, where Ringo's really seeking out some shelter from the storm around him? Could this be his "Help"?We're joined this week by Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pearce, 1/2 of the New Zealand-based rock band The Beths. Their latest album Jump Rope Gazers, out now on Carpark Records, was in our top 3 albums of 2020, a literal constant quarantine companion. It's linked in our Linktree above. Over the last few years, their blend of propulsive, sing-along choruses, four-part vocal arrangements, and wry, introspective lyrics has earned them fans around the world, as well as opening slots for indie rock titans like The Breeders, Pixies, Weezer, and Death Cab for Cutie. We chatted on Mardi Gras day about all sorts of things, from very different Beatle-fan perspectives, and, in a podcast first, Jonathan admits that he maybe got his ranking wrong on this one. What do you think about "Octopus' Garden" at #178? Too high? Too low? This week, Kate unpacks the art, science, and history of gossip with Kelsey McKinney (from the beloved podcast Normal Gossip and author of NYT bestselling book You Didn't Hear This From Me). They explore a variety of angles for this topic, such as how dismissing gossip as "women's talk" has historically been a tool of patriarchal control, religious institutions, or corporations, etc., and how gossip networks have actually served as feminist resistance channels throughout history. They also examine their complicated relationship with parasocial relationships and "entitlement gossip," forever navigating the fine line between being messy Bs who love tea and recognizing gossip's legitimate social power.
