Guests and HostGuest: Larry Jaffee, Author, Journalist, Professor, and Co-Founder of Making Vinyl | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/larry-jaffee-1379bb2/Host: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast & Music Evolves Podcast | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/sean-martinShow NotesVinyl records have experienced one of the most unexpected resurgences in music history. Once considered obsolete, the format has reestablished its presence in the music sales market, attracting collectors, audiophiles, and younger generations discovering the medium for the first time. On this episode of Music Evolves, host Sean Martin is joined by Larry Jaffee, journalist, author, and co-founder of Making Vinyl, to explore the past, present, and future of vinyl records. The History and Evolution of VinylLarry Jaffee's passion for music began early, shaped by childhood experiences with radio, tape recorders, and eventually, his first turntable. His journey mirrors that of recorded music itself—from early reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes to the dominance of LPs. Jaffee explains how vinyl records initially took hold in the 1940s, replacing fragile shellac 78s, and how the industry saw its first format war between Thomas Edison's cylinders and Emil Berliner's flat disc records.By the 1980s, however, vinyl was rapidly losing ground to compact discs, and later, digital streaming. The shift was largely driven by convenience, corporate pressure, and the record industry's aggressive push for higher-priced CDs. As labels stopped accepting returns on LPs, retailers began phasing them out. Yet, as Jaffee points out, the format never truly disappeared. Audiophile labels, collectors, and independent artists kept vinyl alive, setting the stage for its resurgence decades later. The Vinyl RevivalVinyl's comeback has been driven by multiple factors, including nostalgia, superior sound quality, and a renewed appreciation for physical media. Jaffee highlights Record Store Day, the annual event launched in 2008 that played a key role in reigniting public interest in records. Starting with just a dozen exclusive releases and a high-profile in-store appearance by Metallica, Record Store Day quickly gained traction, attracting major labels and leading to hundreds of special vinyl releases each year.Independent artists and labels have also embraced vinyl as a way to connect with fans and generate revenue. Unlike streaming, where payouts are minimal, selling a physical album—especially directly to fans—can be a major source of income for musicians. Jaffee notes that younger generations are playing a key role in sustaining the trend, with millennial and Gen Z listeners making up a growing portion of vinyl buyers.Sound Quality and the Vinyl ExperienceOne of the biggest debates in music is whether vinyl actually sounds better than digital formats. While some argue that CDs and high-resolution digital files offer cleaner sound, vinyl enthusiasts appreciate the warmth, depth, and dynamic range that analog recordings provide. The experience of playing a record—removing it from the sleeve, placing it on the turntable, and carefully dropping the needle—also adds a tactile, immersive element that digital music lacks.Jaffee discusses how vinyl manufacturing has improved in recent years, with pressing plants refining quality control and experimenting with new formulations, including colored and marbled vinyl. However, the resurgence has also exposed industry bottlenecks, with pressing plants struggling to keep up with demand. The Future of Vinyl: Sustainability and InnovationAs vinyl production increases, concerns about its environmental impact have also grown. Traditional records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a material that Greenpeace considers among the most harmful plastics. Jaffee is now involved in efforts to create plant-based, sustainable alternatives, and his team recently produced their first eco-friendly record using a new biodegradable material. With new pressing plants opening, younger audiences embracing the format, and innovations in sustainability, vinyl's future looks promising. While digital music remains dominant, the continued demand for physical media proves that records are more than just a nostalgic novelty—they offer an experience that streaming cannot replicate.Listen to the Full EpisodeLarry Jaffee's deep knowledge of music history, industry shifts, and the cultural significance of vinyl makes this an essential episode for music fans. Tune in to Music Evolves to hear more about the making of records, the role of packaging and design, and what's next for the format that refuses to fade.SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring this show or running ad placement in the podcast?Sponsorship

In this episode we dive into the complicated world of collecting, and of course, record collecting to be specific. Purchasing physical media from artists we love is very important to us, but how do you manage all of it financially and logistically? Where do you draw the line and when has it gone too far? We discuss, contemplate, and pontificate on the mechanics of being a die-hard music fan and record collector. Right after that, we tackle a few segments, read some listener email, and finish with a semi-exhaustive piece on Napalm Death's classic and divisive track, "You Suffer." We gathered clips and comments from friends and luminaries in the scene, each one offering their thoughts on the song, interspersed with live versions and covers of the infamous two second song. Buddies - to celebrate a milestone here at the pod, we are extremely lucky to be joined by guest numero uno here on VCP: Matt Sands, co-owner of Gold Pan Records in Hillsboro, IL. But Matt brought two of his best pals to this episode to discuss one of the best things about this Vinyl Community of ours: fellowship. Joined us on this voyage are Sam "The Psych Professor", regular companion on Matt's YouTube channel, and their friend and shop owner of Noble Records in Matthews, North Carolina, Dillon Smith (aka The Silver Button Sniper), fresh off joining the ranks of the 100k Sub Club. We discuss how these guys started their respective journeys, and how YouTube and the Vinyl Community at large helped them meet, become fast friends, and make them all better collectors (and store owners) for it. This was one of our favorite episodes, and a great way to kick off year Two of Vinyl Community Podcasts! On the serious tip, thank you for your support, encouragement, and patronage as this project has taken off and evolved. We are the product of those that came before us. Our physical attributes come from our parents. Our personality traits are largely inherited. Our behavioral characteristics are mostly environmental. So to what extent do our parents or the homes we grew up in shape us into the music fanatics and avid record collectors we are today? Fellow YouTuber Sam St. John joins our host Rob from Northern Revolutions to discuss how our upbringing likely contributed to this clinical condition we all have called record collecting. Both coming from childhoods enriched and surrounded by music, Rob and Sam reflect on the influences that their parents had on shaping their love of music and how that fed a compulsive addiction to vinyl. Welcome in, Buddies! This 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts is a fun conversation I shared recently with Matt Dunn from the YouTube Channel Prime Analog Records and his daughter Bennett to discuss record collecting + music consumption in a "new school vs. old school" kind of way. Like most dads, Matt instilled his love of music early in Bennett's formative years, and we talk about why he felt it was important to share a diverse offering of musical styles + artists with her. Whereas Matt and myself were conditioned (#olds) to consume our music through physical media, Bennett is part of newer generations of listeners who employ their device(s) of choice to stream music: for discovery, ease, and convenience alike. Without the dominant influence of traditional terrestrial radio, how do we discover new bands + new music without having to spend inordinate amounts of time doing so? From there, Bennett takes us on a walk of her own music journey, including touching on admiration of present day artists like Taylor Swift, country music, and how she finds new music through streaming services while still building a record collection uniquely her own. We close with some light, fun, and curiosity-driven questions in the lightning round. Thanks for tuning in and your continued support of Vinyl Community Podcasts! In this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, Rob from Northern Revolutions chats with fellow Canadian Glen Kellaway (Glen Kellaway From the Basement on YouTube) about the INSANE pricing on vinyl in Canada these days. The genesis of this discussion is the well publicized 30% price increase by the major Canadian record labels. Rob and Glen elaborate on the myriad of other factors that make record collecting in Canada much more expensive than in the US including the additional costs we incur from Ebay & Discogs as well as the much smaller selection and lack of deals on Amazon and more. Learn how the other half lives, in this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! Aloha Buddies! Thanks for joining us again here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! This episode features a conversation with Jason Roxas, Jose Moreno Rahn, and Arnaldo (Fidelios Frequency) where we discussed a number of trending topics in record collecting inside the vinyl community: the recent Bob Marley reissue campaign from Tuff Gong and their (alleged) Jamaican pressing plant, the deluxe 50th Anniversary box set of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" - complete with the 1974 Wembley Empire Pool performance in London (also sold separately) - and the long rumored announcement from Vinyl Me Please of the Miles Davis: The Electric Years box set. Did any of our guests pick up these releases? Pass on purpose? Or slowly placing themselves on vinyl diets prior to Record Store Day? Plus a special guest drops in to give their thoughts on all of the above....find out who and more on this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! Hey Vinyl Community! In this installment of Vinyl Community Podcasts, Rob from Northern Revolutions is joined by Concert Buddie to have a deeper discussion about some of their vinyl gambles experienced throughout their record collecting journeys. Vinyl gambles could be those purchases we almost made but didn't for one reason or another and now maybe those decisions don't sit so well. Or maybe the gambles were chances you took that paid off in a positive way. The gamble discussion then digresses talking about the "miss out tax", plus sharing horror stories of ordering records through the mail, such as poor (read: BAD) packaging or the plight of Olympic hopeful Jimmy the Postal Discus Thrower™ practicing his craft during his day job, using our precious black wax as training equipment. Listener discretion is advised! Here we go again, Buddies! My latest conversation on the Vinyl Community Podcasts feed is a great chat with Arnaldo over at the Fidelios_Frequency YouTube Channel. If you didn't know, Arnaldo works in the music industry, and we cover that and how that aligns with his record collecting journey. More so, we talk about working with passion - working in an industry, a specific job, or a specific cause you are passionate about - a topic we can both relate to. We wrap things up with the coveted #lightninground of rapid fire questions for the contemporary record collector. Let me know what you think of the conversation in the comments below! #vinylcommunity #podcast #vinylcollection For more on Arnaldo's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@fidelios_frequency Concert Buddie YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ConcertBuddie For more on Vinyl Community Podcasts: https://vinylcommunitypodcasts.com/
