In 1997 Apple forever changed the world of marketing in a 30-second commercial, "Think Different". The commercial wasn't about their products. Instead, it was an inspirational and motivational message. The commercial was a massive success and Apple's sales skyrocketed. The world of marketing would never the be same.  Music school owner Mike Grande, of Rock Out Loud, fully embraces the lessons learned from Apple's "Think Different" campaign. He released a 30-second video promoting his music school that isn't about his school or music lessons. The video doesn't even mention his school's name until the very end.  Mike's video, like Apple's, is inspirational and motivational. It paints a picture and tells a story of how music lessons changed a little girl's life and her family. The viewer of the video is left thinking "I want that story to be my child's story."  Desire and dreams motivate customers to take action. Not features, facts, and details. Emotions motivate people to click the "Start Today" button on y our website. Not claims of greatness and quality.  Show Links davesimonsmusic.com Apple's Think Different Commerical Disney World's Commerical Rock Out Loud Promo Video

Advertising should be a part of any good marketing strategy. A marketing strategy that is driven by paid ads is a strategy that lacks foundation. A  strategy that lacks foundation produces mixed results.   Your marketing foundation is defined by 4 elements Understanding the world view of your ideal customer (don't underestimate the importance of this) Developing your purpose statement, your reason for existing, and how you make the world a better place. It's your rally cry at staff meetings.  Creating a core sales message that combines your customer's world view with your purpose statement Expressing your core values and message on your website. Once these components are in place you can begin to consider moving into social media and ultimately paid ads. Paid ads serve one purpose; get people to your website. If your website lacks a clear and customer-centric message you're unlikely to motivate them to take the next step.  Todays Special Guest Mike Grande has the music education industry buzzing about his new video teaching platform designed called Rock Out Loud Live. Shep Hyken interviews Mike Grande, the founder and CEO of Rock Out Loud and The Staten Island School of Rock. They discuss Mike’s successful philosophies of providing an outstanding experience to his customers.  The Interview with Mike Grande:Focus on a simple growth philosophy: to grow your business one customer at a time. If you do your job right, you will earn loyalty and then your customers will help your business grow by recommending your business to friends and family.Know the real purpose of your business and how it can impact your customers. To Mike, music is secondary at his school. He and his fellow teachers—called “coaches”—focus on creating leaders and building self-confidence in their students using music as a tool.Change the customer’s state of mind—break the customer’s preoccupation when they walk through your door or call you. For example, whenever Mike’s students enter one of his schools, a motion detector triggers a crowd chant to pump them up and prepare them for a stellar lesson. Prime your customers in a similar way to ensure their interaction with you is the best it can be.Personalization is a vitally important concept in business. Consider giving your customers personalized gifts to show appreciation for their loyalty. Don’t brand the gifts or turn them into a sales ploy; this is an opportunity to insert some humanity into a service interaction. Have the mindset of “this gift is the least I can do for a loyal customer.”It’s crucial for everyone you work with to be on the same page when it comes to your mission statement. Everyone must be in alignment with the vision of the company, and there needs to be total buy-in from all employees. This comes from creating, cultivating, and defending your company culture.Quote: “For the leader of an organization to be truly successful, you must know your ‘why’ and your mission.” – Mike Grande About: Mike Grande is the founder and CEO of The Staten Island School of Rock and Rock Out Loud. AMAZING OFFER AT THE END OF SHOW! In 2011 Borders went out of business. Barnes and Noble survived. I was in shock. How could this happen? Borders seemed indestructible. If it could happen to Borders it seemed like it could happen to anyone. Maybe it could happen to me and my growing music school.  What is the lesson to learn from Borders and other fallen giants like Blockbuster Video and Circuit City? Failure is the price you pay when you don’t adapt. In the early 2000’s Border’s was betting on the past while Barnes and Noble wagered on the future. Borders stuck with what’s always worked. It seemed smart and safe. Barnes and Noble went digital and prevailed. Borders was too slow to the web. Too much brick and mortar. They failed to adapt. By the time they tried it was too late. My guest day Mike Grande and his company ROCK OUT LOUD are leading the way with merging technology and music education.
