Bobby Mackey's Music World in Wilder, Kentucky isn't just a honky-tonk bar—it's a place where the veil between the living and the dead feels razor thin. Built over the site of a former slaughterhouse with a blood-soaked history, this unassuming nightclub has earned a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in America. Shadow figures, phantom voices, and violent paranormal encounters are just the beginning. Some say there's a gateway to hell in the basement; others whisper about a cursed well, Satanic rituals, and a woman named Pearl Bryan whose spirit never left. For thrill-seekers and ghost hunters alike, Bobby Mackey's isn't just a dive bar—it's a descent into darkness.-----------------Head to the Strange Places home website, asylum817.com to keep up with all things Strange Places, as well as the host. In the first half, psychic medium Chip Coffee discussed life after death and what's waiting on the other side. Despite inheriting his family's psychic abilities, Coffey shared that he didn't begin to connect with the afterlife until adulthood. "I didn't come into my medium abilities until later in life... The first time it happened, it opened the floodgates," he stated. He believes that everyone has some degree of psychic ability, whether it's just occasional experiences or frequent communication with spirits.Coffey recounted growing up in a haunted house where doors would mysteriously open and close, and a piano would play by itself. A parapsychology team even captured electronic voice phenomena (EVPs) of a little girl's spirit stating her name in a sing-song voice. "The things that happened in that house would definitely get your attention," he asserted.Coffey described the afterlife as a "pain-free, loving, peaceful place" where most individuals continue their journey if they have led virtuous lives. However, he cautioned that those who have committed serious wrongs will face dire consequences: "A murderer, a serial killer, he's not rewarded on the other side."He also expressed a strong belief in reincarnation, sharing a story about a young boy who had vivid memories of a past life. The child recalled details about a family he once lived with, and his memories were corroborated when he was taken to that family's house. "How does a child know these things at that age?" he pondered.Coffey highlighted one specific place he avoids—Bobby Mackey's Music World in Kentucky. "Something tells me, 'Don't go there,'" he remarked, pointing to the negative energy allegedly associated with demonic entities. He stressed the need for spiritual preparation before entering certain spaces. "If your gut's telling you don't do it, you shouldn't do it," he stated.-------------------In the second half, researcher Kathleen Ball, PhD, shared her extensive studies of the Knights Templar. Ball recounted a life-changing moment in 2009, when a representative from the Office of Tourism in France led her to a dungeon connected to the Templars. Her exploration of this space revealed significant symbols that sparked her interest in the legendary group. She soon learned from a nun that the Templars protected the holy bloodline of Mary Magdalene and Jesus.Ball detailed the origins of the Knights Templar, asserting that the organization did more than simply defend pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem. She questioned the narrative: "... it doesn't really hold water... I think they were there specifically that they had an intention to excavate under the Temple Mount."While exploring the Templars' supposed guardianship of the Shroud of Turin and the Ark of the Covenant, Ball spoke of the rumors surrounding these artifacts and their connection to Jesus. "I believe that he came into Europe with Mary Magdalene and he lived out his life," she asserted, implying the existence of a lineage that could extend to modern times.Ball also emphasized Portugal's central role in Templar history. She asserted, "It was probably the most important, the powerhouse of the Templars," highlighting strategic military establishments and naval bases that supported their operations. She argued that the Templars embedded themselves within the fabric of European monarchies to promote values of spiritual and religious freedom, contrasting their beliefs with those of the Catholic Church.

This episode is a fan favorite that was originally published as Episode 476. We hope that you have a happy and safe holiday! When musician Bobby Mackey opened Bobby Mackey's Music World in 1978, he had hoped for nothing more than to open a small nightclub where audiences could enjoy the traditional country music he had devoted his life to for decades. Yet before the club was even opened, it was apparent to Bobby, his wife Janet, and manager Carl that whatever the new night club was going to be, it would be anything but normal. In the decades since it opened, Bobby Mackey's Music World has gained a reputation, not just as a one of Kentucky's enduring country western clubs, but as one of America's supposedly most haunted locations. Indeed, Bobby Mackey's is said to be the home of several spirits whose lives revolved around, and in some cases ended on the property, including the ghosts of a lovesick showgirl, a headless pregnant woman, and the two Satan-worshipping men who took her head.Thank you to the glorious David White for research assistance :)ReferencesAssociated Press. 1978. Once again a casual point in conversation inspired this week's discussion. And we came up with our own athletes, actors, etc that we'd like to see take a shot at Metaldom. Elvira doing a Goth project? Or even Samuel L. Jackson doing a 70s jazz record. Take our money!! In our "News, Views and Tunes", we're less than receptive to the new "Twisters" flick and Nickelback doc. Musically, we crank some new and used from Wraith, Warlord, Iron Angel, Witchsnake, Corky and the Juice Pigs and introduce Vancouver hardcore bashers Fearbirds in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!
