Full Text of Readings [DAY TITLE] The Saint of the day is Mary, Mother of God The Story of Mary, Mother of God Mary's divine motherhood broadens the Christmas spotlight. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God's invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38). Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43, emphasis added). Mary's role as mother of God places her in a unique position in God's redemptive plan. Without naming Mary, Paul asserts that “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Paul's further statement that “God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father!'” helps us realize that Mary is mother to all the brothers and sisters of Jesus. Some theologians also insist that her motherhood of Jesus is an important element in God's creative plan. God's “first” thought in creating was Jesus. Jesus, the incarnate Word, is the one who could give God perfect love and worship on behalf of all creation. As Jesus was “first” in God's mind, Our Lady was “second” insofar as she was chosen from all eternity to be his mother. The precise title “Mother of God” goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek form Theotokos (God-bearer), it became the touchstone of the Church's teaching about the Incarnation. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the holy Fathers were right in calling the holy virgin Theotokos. At the end of this particular session, crowds of people marched through the street shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!” The tradition reaches to our own day. In its chapter on Mary's role in the Church, Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church calls her “Mother of God” 12 times. To learn more, visit our Seven Days with Mary page. Reflection Other themes come together at today's celebration. It is the Octave of Christmas: Our remembrance of Mary's divine motherhood injects a further note of Christmas joy. It is a day of prayer for world peace: She is the mother of the Prince of Peace. Gospel Luke 2:16-21 The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,   and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this,   they made known the message   that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed   by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things,   reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned,   glorifying and praising God   for all they had heard and seen,   just as it had been told to them.   When eight days were completed for his circumcision,   he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel   before he was conceived in the womb. Reflection When you think about these stories they have such an interesting twist to them. The unexpected. The one you wouldn't expect to come forward and say something like these shepherds said, had an experience with an angel that told them that they would encounter this. And you think about who shepherds were those days. They were sort of bikers, you know, just out there in the world. But what a beautiful image of the ones who come to recognize Jesus for who he is, and the people who worked in the way that Jesus symbolically longed to work. The shepherds were told by an angel that a new shepherd was coming, one beyond their imagining, one beyond their abilities, and they were delighted to share this message. And you wonder how the people around these stories, how they must have pondered them and wondered about them. We are asked to do the same thing. What a wonderful affirmation to the role of Jesus as our Shepherd in this apparition of an angel to these men. Closing Prayer Father, story after story around your coming into the world as a human being as our Savior. Keep us open to ways in which you continue to show us the mystery of who you are, and how are you working in our life. Give us time to reflect, to know you, and to expect signs and wonders. Homily for January First, 2026 Mary Mother of God, Solemnity

The first day of the year 2026, just like in any first day of the year of any, our holy Mother the Church ends the Christmas Octave. It began with Jesus and it ends with the one who carried Him for 9 months and now we look to the arms carrying and embracing the Create Baby. Mary! Listen to the homily on this great first day of the year!

Lk 2:16-21The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,  and the infant lying in the manger.When they saw this,  they made known the message  that had been told them about this child.All who heard it were amazed  by what had been told them by the shepherds.And Mary kept all these things,  reflecting on them in her heart.Then the shepherds returned,  glorifying and praising God  for all they had heard and seen,  just as it had been told to them.  When eight days were completed for his circumcision,  he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel  before he was conceived in the womb.

Luke 2:16–19 At the birth of Christ, the Blessed Mother's Immaculate Heart was full of love and grace, so full that it overflowed in superabundance. Her human heart could not contain all that consumed it. Seeing her Child, having Saint Joseph near, and being accompanied by God's creatures within that sacred cave near Bethlehem was all that she needed for her complete fulfillment. But God gave her even more.As that holy night unfolded, an angel of the Lord appeared to the poor shepherds tending their flocks in the fields. The angel announced “good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). The angel went on to declare, “Today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11–12). Then, a multitude of heavenly hosts appeared, glorifying God with their song of praise.Such an experience compelled these lowly shepherds to immediately seek out this newborn Messiah. When they found Him, they revealed to our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph what the angel had said to them, and “Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). It is this Immaculate Heart and the motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary that we celebrate today.Because Mary's Immaculate Heart was overflowing with love and grace, these humble shepherds gave her the opportunity to share that love and grace. While they blessed her and Saint Joseph by their presence and adoration, she blessed them even more by being an instrument and mediatrix of God's love through her newborn Son.Mary was not only the mother of the flesh of her Son, but the mother of the Person Who is the Son of God. For this reason, the Church, in Her wisdom, has ascribed to her the title, “Mother of God.” Jesus was her Son, and Jesus is God. Therefore, she is rightly honored as the Mother of God.As the Mother of God, Mary's Immaculate Heart continues to overflow with love and grace. Just as she did with the shepherds on that first Christmas night, her heart continues to pour forth all that it contains upon us, her spiritual sons and daughters. The extent to which we are members of Christ's Body, the Church, is the extent to which the Blessed Mother's motherhood is active in our lives, just as it was in the life of her Son and as it touched the lives of the shepherds. Reflect today on this glorious title given to Jesus' mother—the Mother of God. As you do, ponder the role she plays in your life and in the life of the entire Church. By giving birth to the Messiah, the Son of God, she gave birth to the Church, becoming mother and mediatrix to us all. Seek her intercession, mediation, and motherhood, knowing that doing so not only honors her Son, but also cooperates with His divine plan of salvation. Most glorious Mother of God, your Immaculate Heart is overflowing with love and the fullness of grace. Your love for all of God's children compels you to share that grace with all who come to you and your divine Son. Please count me among your children and lavish upon me all that is contained in your pondering heart of pure love and grace. Mother of God, pray for us. Christmas puts before us the Virgin Mary loving and caring for her Divine Son.  It's a scene that we can enter into in our prayer and in our life.  Jesus says that we too are "his mother" insofar as we do God's will.  God allows Mary and all of us to love him in the Christ child just as He has always loved us: with a mother's heart.  Christmas is a time to begin life again with a newfound trust in the goodness of God. https://comeawaybyyourselves.com

Our universal Church celebratestoday the solemnity of Our Lady Mary, the Mother of God. It's a greatcelebration for our Lady which we all observe on the 8th day after the birth ofJesus Christ. On the 8th day of His birth also, Jesus for the first timesacrifieced His blood through the rite of circumcision according to localcustoms. His Mother Mary, certainly was the person most responsible for caringfor the wounds of her Son, for as an infant, this circumcision would be verypainful. His mother must repeatedly wipe the blood flowing out as the wound wasstill not dry. Blood is a verystrong element to relate a mother with her child. The mother's womb which isinhabited by the child during pregnancy shows an inseparable blood relationshipbetween the two, and it becomes so evident when the baby is already born, as heis bathed in the mother's blood before enjoying the new world outside themother's body. Virgin Mary and our mothers in the world continue to show howthe blood relationship keeps interacting until the child grows up to becomemature. Virgin Mary enjoyed a life filled with blood of Her Son Jesus,especially when she was at the foot of the cross in Golgotha ​​and embracingthe dead body of Jesus Christ, la pieta. Our mothers in theworld, of course with their husbands or our fathers, feel how painful they arewhen their children suffer. Their blood do not flow in normal circulation  because they are not able to endure that suffering.How they are joyful when their children are happy, when the blood in theirbodies circulate well so they look cheerful and happy. The children's actualhappiness or sadness in this world cause the blood situation of their parentsgoes calm, low, and rise. The blood really unites the mother and child, therefore,this relationship becomes so solid and can only be terminated by death. Theseall illustrate that the motherhood of a mother is so important. The woman whogave birth to us is a mother with motherhood because her love and concern forus can be seen of the same patern as God for us, His beloved people. On this very specialday of Mary, the Mother of God, may all our hearts be filled with joy andgratitude. Christmas that brings us together with Jesus and the Family ofNazareth, makes our joy full and we want to carry it out for the next year. Wemust start this year with joy and optimism, and that is the content of theGospel that we are about to proclaim. The motherhood of mother figure,basically  is in women, is very centralin our lives. So we must be very grateful because God is so good to pour giftsto our mothers, ladies and women. Our life cannot be a real one if we don'thave mothers. Let's pray. In the name of the Father... It's Christmas, and we're celebrating the birth of Jesus, so it's the perfect time to think about his mother, Mary. While she is omnipresent in Christianity - especially in Christian art - we know very little about her. This is why I was very excited to learn more about, and from, her through my guest, Dr. Christine Valters Paintner. Christine is the author of Birthing the Holy: Wisdom from Mary to Nurture Creativity and Renewal. She has a PhD in Christian spirituality, is an abbess, and is the author of more than twenty books on spirituality. Christine tells us about her American mother, Susan, a United Nations employee who struggled with rheumatoid arthritis but transformed her suffering into a gift for others when she earned an MA in social studies to become an advocate for people with disabilities. Susan teaches us to empower others - to not see ourselves as victims, but to use our challenges to help those around us - and to embrace the power that comes with older age. In the second part of the episode, we talk about Mary and her lessons: to show up in the world, to accept the calling to create the holy, to embrace the power of the sacred feminine (intuition, creativity, dreams, and gestation), and to be a loving and present witness in both birth and death, in the positive and the negative. Christine also shares an important lesson for many women: that we are not responsible for everything, and that sometimes we, too, need to be taken care of. Finally, she speaks about healing our ancestors by healing ourselves. I invite you to reflect on Mary, her presence, and what she represents to you during these holidays.
