As a long-time fan of n5MD, I showcased Mike's label on solipsistic NATION, my electronic music show, years ago. Mike guest deejayed on Soundwave in 2021 and returns today with a much-needed mix for me. I can't go into the details, but last week I nearly died. You'd never know it by looking at me. Physically I'm fine. But I'm shaken. I find that I quickly get emotional about things. Sometimes I have a profound respect for life, all lives. Sometimes I'm filled with existential despair. I'm told this will pass in a few months. In the meantime, I'm having these overwhelming experiences. Mike doesn't know this, but his mix helped get me through the week. Mike has some words about today's mix below. My song, “Sunrise at Ironhorse Trail,” included in today's mix, is from a release that I will be releasing on my personal Bandcamp page on World Alzheimer's Day. My father passed this January in what can best be described as complications due to mixed dementia. All proceeds will be donated to Hope Hospice, which was very integral in the comfort of my father in the last days of his life, as well as, and maybe even more importantly, my mother's grief counseling after his passing. Today's guest deejay is Michael Jakucs, AKA Sunwarper. After hearing Michael's music in both Brian Sangmeister and Forest Robots's mixes for Soundwave, I invited Michael to share a mix. Based on Michael's music, I knew we were in good hands. But I did not anticipate the surprising directions he took his mix and yet felt utterly familiar. Let me explain. The focus of Soundwave is ambient, classical, experimental, and instrumental music, with an emphasis on the ambient. And that's fine. I'm all about that ambient life. But for me, it's always a delight when a guest shares a mix that leans into the show's classical, experimental, and instrumental aspects. Christian Sager's doom metal/math rock/hip hop mix comes to mind. As does Charles Hazlewood's mimimalist/modern classical/free jazz mix. What makes today's show special, for me, is that it's very much steeped in shoegaze and dream pop. So while I only know several of the artists in Michael's mix, I already feel well acquainted with the music I'm unfamiliar with. It's very déjà vu. I keep asking myself, “Isn't this a 4AD release?” Michael just released a track composed for the season finale of the webcomic The Eagle and the Snake called "Forever Becoming.” He also has a full-length album, Radiant Visage, that will be released on October 14 and available for pre-order on September 9. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be n5MD founder Mike Cadoo. See you then. The first time I used a track from Altus in a mix was 10 years ago. I've been a fan ever since. Altus is Mike Carss, who also records as Loneward. Between those two musical personas, I've used Mike's music in 10 mixes. https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/music-for-a-mars-landing/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/deep-sky-time-music-for-stargazing-2013/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/eight-days-in-july-the-journey-of-apollo-11/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/almost-home/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/best-ambient-of-2019/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/sleep-series-summer-slumber/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/the-stars-appear-like-diamonds/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/the-silence-of-snow/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/always-autumn-by-paul-asbury-seaman/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/unfold-the-universe/ After listening to the new Loneward album, Pallid Memories, I asked Mike if he could create a guest mix for me. Luckily, he said yes and now we have this wonderful new collection, The Power of Memory. I've been listening to it nearly every day for the last two weeks and I just can't say enough about this mix. It transports the listener through space and time. Here's what Mike says about this mix: Our brains are mysterious machines when you regard how memory works. If you listen to new music and it causes you to sit up and take notice, there's a chance that moment in time will encode itself into the soundwaves. With each repeated listen, you can reinforce that, recording fragments of those periods of time. Afterward, no matter how long a time gap, if you listen to that song again, you can enjoy the memories held within. This makes the music yours and deeply personal. Even more interesting is when you listen to new music and it simply unearths nostalgia within you. The final track in this mix, written by me (Loneward), is my way of expressing both these phenomena. As you might have guessed, each song (aside from the final track) has deep meaning to me. I'm happy to be able to share them with you, and I hope the music moves you enough to explore the albums they came from. When Dave asked me to guest mix for LLM, I thought: yeah, that sounds like a fun project. I've never done anything like this before but knew there was an art to it. Now, I have a whole new level of respect for those who create these mixes. Coming up with a set list is one thing, but getting them to actually work together without unwanted dissonance . . .? Ouch! My thanks to Dave for the opportunity. I hope you enjoy the journey. - Mike You can find Altus & Loneward music here - https://altusmusic.bandcamp.com/ Links to every album used in this set, in the same order in which they appear in the mix: https://archive.org/details/Mantra28thOct2008 https://robertrich.bandcamp.com/album/trances-drones https://hakobune.bandcamp.com/album/whispering-in-their-presence https://bleep.com/release/40902-manual-the-north-shore-bliss-out-v20 https://n5md.bandcamp.com/album/embrace https://christophersisk.bandcamp.com/album/light-1 https://mattborghi.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-meditation-and-sleep-short-forms-vol-1 https://awakenedsouls.bandcamp.com/album/how-we-heal https://kwajbasket.bandcamp.com/album/science-fiction-soundtrack https://sudanobuto.bandcamp.com/album/modestly-calm https://ajna1.bandcamp.com/album/self-titled-ep https://eternell.net/album/waking-music https://projektrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-trilogy-25th-anniversary-remastered-edition https://wingsofanangel.bandcamp.com/album/don-t-trust-the-sun https://steveroach.bandcamp.com/album/mystic-chords-and-sacred-spaces-complete-edition https://altusmusic.bandcamp.com/album/pallid-memories Also thanks to Mike for collecting this social info for all the artists in the mix: Facebook: Srg @robertrichmusic @hakobuneongaku Jess Kahr @Ex Confusion @christophersiskmusic @mattborghi Awakened Souls @kwajbasket Norihito Suda Ajna & @Massergy @eternellmusic @dirk.serries Wings Of An Angel @SteveRoachMusic Twitter: Srg @robertrichmusic @hakobunemusic Jess Kahr @exconfusion @christophersisk @mattborghi @souls_awakened @Kwajbasket Norihito Suda Ajna & @massergy @illuvia Dirk Serries @WingsAmbient @steve_timeroom Instagram: Srg @robertrichmusic @tobirarecs Jess Kahr @exconfusion @christophersisk @mattborghimusic @awakenedsoulsmusic @kwajbasket Norihito Suda @ajna_drone & @massergy_ambient @ludvigcimbrelius @dirkserries Wings Of An Angel @steveroachofficial Thanks again, Mike, for creating this gem! Today's guest deejays are PCM, who are Francesco Perra (P), Matteo Cantaluppi (C), Matteo Milea (M). n5MD founder Mike Cadoo put me in touch with PCM when I asked him after guest deejayed on Soundwave who he thought would want to share a mix on the show. PCM has crafted a mix that I adore. There's so much to love. One of the things I find exciting about Soundwave is that our guest deejays introduce me to music and artists I'm unfamiliar with. On the other hand, some musicians that I've been surprised have made an appearance on Soundwave nearly two years into the show. PCM remedy that with today's mix. I'm talking about talent like Fennesz, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Coil (I'm surprised Coil aren't on every show), and Morton Subotnick. PCM themselves make an appearance at the end of today's show. You'll want to hear more of their music. You can listen to their latest album, Macro, which came out earlier this year. Macro is equal parts expansive and constrained, and the magic happens between those two extremes. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Wife Signs. See you then. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message
Today's guest deejay is Michael Southard of Triplicate Records. A couple of months ago, Soundwave guest deejay Ishmael Cormack (listen to his mix here) asked for musical recommendations from his followers on Twitter. Ismael got a lot of responses, and I listened to every suggestion on Spotify. If I heard something I liked, I'd invite the musician to guest deejay on Soundwave. Anthéne, for example, appeared on the show back in August. And today's show, of course, features Triplicate Records. I remember back in the 80's listening to the soundtrack to Birdy by Peter Gabriel and wishing some musicians would record music for imaginary soundtracks. Such music existed, but I wasn't aware of it until the following year when I was turned on to Brian Eno's Ambient 4: On Land and Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Finding Eno, and musicians like him, was everything I hoped for and more. Over the decades, I've seen more and more record labels dedicated to ambient, modern classical, experimental and instrumental music. 12k comes to mind, as does n5MD and Ultimae Records. Music from Triplicate Records was already popping up on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist and music I was discovering on Bandcamp. When Triplicate Records was recommended to Ishmael on Twitter, it felt like the universe was telling me to invite them on the show. Triplicate Records is a boutique record label working primarily with instrumental electronic music. They are 100% artist-run, by producers Michael Southard (Time Rival), Bryan Kraft (BVSMV), and George Ernst (Suncastle). Despite the pandemic, they have gained a following with their unique musical tastes, striking artwork, and consistent output. You're going to love today's mix. If you want to hear more from Triplicate Records, listen to their Spotify playlist here. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Oleg Puzan of Line Spectrum. See you then! Today's guest deejay is Mike Cadoo, the founder of n5MD, an independent record label based out of Oakland, California, that focuses on ambient, modern composition, post-rock, and experimental electronic music. I showcased n5MD on solipsistic NATION some years ago. Let me share what I said about n5MD on that episode of solipsistic NATION, which explains why I invited Mike to be our guest deejay on today's show. “What I've always found so charming is that the releases on n5MD don't just provide music that establishes a mood. The releases on n5MD take you on an emotional journey, which I find far more compelling and interesting. Anyone can play a chord in E minor that will evoke an emotional response. Still, it's much more difficult to build an emotionally complex song and takes you places in your imagination. Let me take that back. There are plenty of people who can do that, there are a just few people who do it well and do it with sincerity, and I think that's what n5MD is all about.” Mike's mix for today's show captures everything I just said about his label. Mike is going to take you by the hand and gently guide you through an emotional journey. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Steve Swartz. Today's guest deejay is Pavlo Storonsky, AKA Tineidae. I discovered Pavlo while perusing artists on the Cryo Chamber label on Bandcamp. Cryo Chamber has been one of my favorite music labels since being introduced to them through a friend who played music from their catalog to provide the soundtrack to our Vampire: The Masquerade game sessions. I've never heard a Cryo Chamber release I didn't like; there are just some I like more than others. I was hooked when I heard Pavlo's Exo album. It's as dark, ominous, and cinematic as everything else on Cryo Chamber but with a science fiction-horror vibe. That's not to say that Pavlo's mix for today's show sounds like that. But it's undoubtedly moody, atmospheric, and beautiful. I've been listing to it all week, and it's exactly what I needed to help get me through Trump's attempted coup here in the U.S. and 4,000+ dying a day from COVID-19. It's surreal that I just wrote that sentence, but here we are. Today on SOUNDWAVE our guest deejay is n5MD recording artist, Daniel McCagh. Daniel describes his mix as a collection of some favourite tunes both beautiful and sometimes uncomfortable for deep and immersive listening. It's the kind of soundscape that's perfect for the rare rainy day we're having this weekend in San Diego. After you are done listening to Daniel's mix you will know that you have just experienced something profound and that you will need time to process it. Daniel's mix comes to us by way of Mike Cadoo, the founder of n5MD. I interviewed Mike and featured music from his label on solipsistic NATION some years ago. When I launched SOUNDWAVE I reached out to Mike to do a mix for a show. Mike was busy at the time but suggested that Daniel put together a mix for SOUNDWAVE. Great idea, Mike. Oh, and I still want you to do a mix of your own when time permits. Daniel McCagh is an electronic music producer and sound artist currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. Daniel uses acoustic instruments and digital manipulation to create powerful emotive and cinematic music. Daniel is also the sole composer and sound designer behind Gutterbox Audio, having composed music and designed sound for global companies such as Polestar, Huawei, Acura and Volkswagen. Gavin Miller is back, this time with his worriedaboutsatan project, showcasing some of his favourite pieces, including a few of his own, like the opener taken from his latest release for n5MD. We live in a strange and unstable world, but the only constant that remains is all of this music. So when I find myself overwhelmed with the latest events, I turn to meditation through sound, with a journey curated by someone else. Through this mix, I feel like we are listening together, and as such, connected again. 'I made this mix with not much in mind, to be honest,' says Miller of his selection, 'I’ve been listening to all sorts of music lately, and I just wanted it to be a fair reflection of that more than anything.' And we’re back! Back after a short vacation and back with the second volume of delicious IDM from a Belgian duo, Suumhow, whose latest record on n5MD, Secuund, was released only a few days ago, on September 20th, 2019. After the first mix, which was released in August of 2018, we promised an ongoing retrospective on the genre, and with this new instalment Suumhow delivers yet another volume of deliciously crunchy tracks for your enjoyment! Everyone has that handful of tracks that they just keep going back to, over and over again, no matter what. As teenagers growing up in Brussels in the late 90s/early 2000s, we lost our innocence to IDM/electronica institutions like n5MD, Toytronic, City Centre Offices, Schematic, Karaoke Kalk, Mego and Merck (just to name a few) – and never really left any of it behind. It’s still all here with us, as timeless go-tos and unique influences, and this first MUUSCLE MIX is an honest and humble tribute to all the tracks that made us who we are, shaped our taste in sound, helped us grow as musicians, and most importantly, never ever stopped blowing our minds!
Tim Arndt (aka Near the Parenthesis) has assembled this mix of personal listenings and influences in advance of his upcoming release on n5MD. Ranging new and old, digital and analog, it's centered on a very relaxed vibe for transitioning into your day... or perhaps backing out of it. Much of the mix is focused on the labels which influenced his current style, as much as the artists themselves. Vittoria Fleet is a Berlin-based duo of Allan Shotter and Giada Zerbo. First appearing on Headphone Commute pages with their self-released Kissing Cousins EP back in 2012, the project got picked up by the beloved n5MD label, releasing Acht LP in 2014 and most recently, just this past October, Greed LP. Describing their music, I've often compared the project to output by Clark, Tim Exile, Apparat and even Björk - somewhat dark, punctuated, and glitchy while being warm and soft at the very same time. For this Headphone Commute Mix (the very first mix they have ever created) Vittoria Fleet showcases the darker side of their influences. It’s been nearly two years since Arovane came back to the scene with his Ve Palor on n5MD. Since then, Uwe Zahn, managed to self release two more fascinating experimental albums, Eleeve and lyid skor, which you can pick up on his bandcamp. We’ve also been honored to host a Headphone Commute Mix by Arovane back in 2013, and so when we reached out for a refresher, he happily obliged. Given a total freedom of selection, Zahn picked some challenging, fascinating, and extremely fun pieces for your enjoyment.
