As with all past ‘Reflection' year-end mixes, I start with a collection of albums, EPs, and compilations I have enjoyed over the past year. Through the process of compiling a mix, tracks are selected from this extensive collection. This ultimately means many of my favorite tracks and albums are often omitted in this process, due to the organic process of compiling a mix, things don't fit, or fall by the wayside. There are many albums I had on high rotation missing from this mix, but I have to stop somewhere. As I say every year, this isn't a definitive ‘best-of' list, but a selection of *some* of my favorite music from the year in one listenable format. It's the most enjoyable way for me to boil down the music I've loved from the year using these self-imposed restrictions, for you to enjoy and hopefully discover more, and for me to reflect on time and time again - like a photograph that captures the year in music. I encourage you to use the mix to explore each artist, listen to the album in full, and explore each label (and check the Buy Music Club list at the bottom). If you want to see the majority of music I've been supporting this year, head over to my Bandcamp collection. For the ASIP year-end label compilation, see the feature and mix here.~Yikes, I crossed the 3-hour mark! Well, that speaks volumes to the amount of great music that was released this year, and I'm already feeling guilty about omissions from this mix. But alas, it needs to stop somewhere, the Holiday's are coming… This edition marks the tenth year in succession (2010 was the first mix but I skipped doing this for two years for some reason) and it is an extremely enjoyable exercise I look forward to every year. Revisiting many of the albums I've purchased throughout the year, and records from my shelf, then taking the time to absorb more recent releases - the process is cathartic (after the slight anxiety that builds knowing I have a beast of a mix to tackle, and hard decisions to be made). Looking back at previous Reflection mixes, I am evidently a creature of habit and seem to gravitate to certain artists more than most over the years (we all have our faves), but I also take a lot of time to dig for new artists and approaches to music in this realm, and this year's edition is probably the most varied in music styles since the Reflection series began. Ambient, field recordings, drone (Power-ambient, even), big saxophones (the flute revival didn't make it ;-), Japanese left-field pop, deep techno, chugging techno, modern classical, experimental, jungle, breaks, dub and more… as you might imagine, this is a 3hr mix that feels more like a showcase than a DJ mix in the traditional sense, as I'm focusing on creating chapters of different styles, but I hope makes for an attentive listen if you've got 3hrs to spare. Am I going to write about all 42 tracks? Not this time, as I don't think there's much I can illustrate other than ‘go listen to that entire album!' but I will make a few observations on themes that emerged as I was going through this process. Firstly, the far corners of Bandcamp are very much alive, so for anyone looking for alternatives given all the talk with Bandcamp this year, please don't hit the escape button and continue to support us- I continued to find so many new labels and artists, some of which are included here such as Liis Ring, Etüüd, ǝɯǝɐ, Azu Tiwaline and not to forget a kick-ass Jungle community throwing out some lovely 90's infused comps. Bandcamp keeps small labels and artists alive right now (only two of these tracks were physical releases and not on Bandcamp - #19 & #42). I spent a lot of time listening to music that would work for the two shows I played in Japan earlier this year, and for those who listened back to one of the sets I posted, you may notice a few similar tracks/artists appearing here again which I've held in high regard since their release, such as Jo Johnson, Field Lines Cartographer and Endurance. On reflection, there was a lot of deepness for me this year that came from preparing for and inspired by those sets, sitting on the edges of techno with lots of synthesizer/Berlin school projects (as well as a couple of artists I got to see in person whilst over there such as Yolabmi and Endurance). There were a couple of glaring omissions from this mix (*checks Bandcamp app most played*) which I had on rotation so much this year that I still wanted to mention, such as Imaginary Softwoods, who was behind one of my favorite tracks of the year, ‘Diagrams of the Universe'. Along with Johnny Nash's Point of Entry - a tranquil guitar-laden affair, both of which never left my turntable for long. The ever-expanding ASIP roster of artists, both alumni and current, had an extremely busy year evidently (I try to restrict their inclusions in this mix where I can otherwise it could be an entire ASIP promo show… hey that's an idea…). bvdub released about ~10 masterpieces, as only he can, flaunting all possible peripherals in his deep arsenal (along with rounding out the Earth House Hold project with us of course). ASC was crazy busy with his quality retro Spatial DnB releases (one of them made it in here). For those who enjoyed Alex Albrecht's debut with us, don't miss his earlier 2023 release. Deepchild released another great textured follow-up to his ASIP debut for those wanting more. 36 continued some rave-esque ambient no doubt inspired by his 9128 recording a few years back. Markus Guentner began an exciting collab project with Joachim Spieth (and also appeared in several other collaborations). RAI kept things relatively reflective with a few Bandcamp specials and recordings from his live tour. Benoit Pîoulard made a beautiful return to Morr Music, and Christian Kleine rounded out the year with a limited vinyl press. Those needing more from our 2023 new signing Mikkel Rev, can check out his earlier album released in January this year. James Bernard had a busy year alongside his wife as Awakened Souls, and found more 90's DAT goodness among many other projects. Mick Chillage released a superb sleeper IDM album in the form of Initial Programs. Dr Atmo's throwback to his early sounds saw a rebirth of one of his most enjoyed albums alongside new remixes. Wanderwelle made their second full-length odyssey for Important Records and Yagya continued to explore uncharted new takes on his sound through his new label imprint. Scanner's innovative repertoire continued to expand and one of my faves of his came in the form of this collab. Hior Chronik published a couple of unreleased gems. And lastly, Ludvig Cimbrelius aka Purl/Illuvia and Arovane managed to sneak onto this mix with a couple of their releases… Two labels who hit home runs for me this year with the majority of their releases. Illian Tape had some extremely great (and varied) electronic releases. And while Mysteries of the Deep's output was relatively choice (quality over quantity), 3 out of the 4 releases made it onto the mix! There are a couple of tracks in the mix from albums that align with what seems to be, the common consensus on some of the ‘best' electronic releases from the year (one of the advantages of my waiting until mid-December to finish this mix is I see what other people are rating highly or what I might've missed) such as James Holden's psychedelic return, and Purelink's amphibious dub LP. But other than those two, I think everyone should find something new among the twists and turns across the 3 hours and 42 tracks. For the mix artwork this year, and after last year's terribly basic AI take (it's come a long way in a year!), I toyed with creating another AI attempt on a “A Strangely Isolated Place” prompt, but you have to spend time to get quality back out of these lil' work gnomes. Every image I created from that prompt ended up being a stereotypical lonely hiker (with 4 fingers I'm sure) strolling through a highly conceptual colorful future universe. Either that or a decrepit shed…So instead, I opted for an image that means much more to me… a wall. Not just any wall though, it's the wall outside of Spread nightclub in Tokyo where I had the pleasure of playing an ambient set this year, meeting new friends, and making some amazing memories. Thanks to all of the artists and labels included here who have soundtracked my year in more ways than one, and the many more I didn't manage to include this time around. Be sure to check the previous year's Reflection mixes for more of the same. Hope you enjoy the listen back at a great year of music. astrangelyisolatedplace · ASIP - Reflection on 2023 Listen on Soundcloud the ASIP Podcast or the 9128.live iOS and Android appDownload MP3Tracklist:01. Curated by Alexis Le-Tan and featuring a host of brilliant, inspirational labels, it's an honor to be invited to be a part of the growing Oddity Radio collective. The ASIP label profile is now live on the site, including a playlist of tracks from the label so far, which can be added to your listening rotation on the station, a short interview, and an Inspirations mix by yours truly (cue biggest picture of me on the internet).Oddity asks each label contributor to submit an inspirations mix, and it felt like an extremely daunting task at first. Capturing my inspirations in one mix would send me in circles, and I needed a more specific angle (you know I love a constraint when it comes to mixes!) So instead of looking far and wide or deep into my record collection, I looked to the many artists who have defined ASIP over the years and made it what it is today. They appear in the mix under different guises, collaborations, or with earlier releases before they were on ASIP. Somehow, it manages to capture the sound of the label and is probably one of my favorite mixes I've put together in a while… maybe because of the nostalgia - it reminded me of times many years ago, discovering some of these artists for the first time a long time ago. Head over to Oddity Radio to listen to the playlist and the Inspirations mix. Big thanks to Oddity Radio for spreading the love and curating such a great platform, please check it out and the many other great labels featured! Days of warmth, and sun. Here in Brooklyn, summer has arrived. Hazy mornings and long afternoons mark the passing of time. It's to Brooklyn and in turn Micah Frank that we look for this morning's inspiration and sound track. Whether by molding programming and sound into generative soundscapes, or layering field recordings and blending samples, his taste is immaculate and deep. This mix is nice and straightforward - no funky locations, no focus on a single instrument - just straight up ambient. The closest thing to a theme would be that all the tracks are from 2021. In trying to come up with a title for the mix, I looked through a list I keep of possible titles. If I hear an interesting phrase or combo of words I'll jot it down to possibly use later. In this case I came across "The Infinite Present." It seemed to fit because all the tunes are from 2021 and, even though we aren't through two whole months yet, the amount of new music can sometimes feel infinite. Cheers! 2020 as a year of discontent in so many ways has underscored just how important it is to have someone to talk with when things are rough. Being seen, heard, and valued is a fundamental longing we all experience and one of the primary ways those needs are met is when someone shows how much they care by simply being there. It's most often not what that person says that makes the difference, but just that he's there. You know he's there, you know he cares, you know he wants to somehow share the burden and see you move through the valley to get to that sun-soaked ridge on the other side. That really can lift you up in the throes of anxiety and discouragement, can't it? That's been my experience with prayer. Prayer is talking with God. Of course, that involves the belief that God is there and that he cares. He is not just a concept or a being far away but someone who is with and even within me, which enables him to feel my pain. And my experience continues to be that he then actually provides relief. Not that the hurt, concern, and disappointment just vaporizes into a mist of technicolored glory, but that I become better able to manage my response to what is vexing me and then go out to bless someone else. Prayer calms Prayer mobilizes Prayer clarifies focus Prayer humbles Prayer reorders Prayer makes room for experiences of the transcendent Prayer lets God in and allows him to move in places only he can access Prayer changes things Prayer changes you Doubt your doubts that this is true and that you can experience this as well. Peace to you, my friend. Bible verses quoted in this episode: "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death." Hebrews 2:14-15 "For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'" Acts 17:28 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7 "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 "Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? When I said, 'My foot is slipping,' your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. The LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge."

The end of a year is a popular moment to release a (label) compilation. Sometimes to look back, sometimes to look ahead.... and sometimes just because it's compilation time. Here's an (incomplete!) overview of some recent compilations presenting hours (and more hours) of listening pleasure. VARIOUS ARTISTS - ILLUMINATIONS II Dronarivm kicks off with this New Year Charity Compilation. No less than 30 track and almost three hours of music, priced ridiculously low to begin with... but of course you will want to pay more because of the amount of music, ánd because the profits go to 4Paws for Ability, an organisation that 'enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs.' (You can also donate directly of course, but why would you when you're offered a batch of quality music in the process?) The thirty artists presented here show why Dronarivm has become one of the most important labels in the ambient/experimental electronic genre. It's an impressive array of which I will only mention a few names: Aaron Martin, Bruno Sanfilippo, Loscil, Jacaszek, Machinefabriek, Endless Melancholy, Legiac, Offthesky, Olan Mill, Sven Laux, Anne Chris Bakker, Antonymes, Giulio Aldinucci, Pleq, Hakobune, Pausal Chihei Hatakeyama. And that are just 17/30. Even more impressive is the fact that all these tracks are exclusive - they have not appeared on earlier releases before. So this is what we call a 'no-brainer'! If you missed the first (2017) edition of Illuminations with another 28 tracks, you can still download it. It is a Name-Your Price release, but I strongly suggest to double your donation for Illuminations II. Simply because. Illuminations II (The New Year 2018 charity compilation) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - FROM HERE TO TRANQUILITY, VOL. 8: THE DARKENED PATH On a somewhat darker note, we find #8 in the From Here To Tranquility series on Silent Records, curated and founded by Kim Cascone. Not specifically an end-of-year release, by the way, but edition 8 in the From Here To Tranquility series. This edition 'addresses the pervasive darkness we find in the world today', and does so with 80 minutes of contemplative soundscapes with a retro-touch by Scott Gibbons, Kris Force, Chris Meloche, Dead Voices on Air, Michal Seta, Pragma, David Metcalfe, Legion Of Green Men, Aume, Meterpool, Mike Rooke and David Lee Myers. Not the most familiar names perhaps, and the music can be quite different in nature (a quiet atmospheric field recording track by Chris Meloche can easily be followed by a rather aggressive noise track from Dead Voices on Air), but you can simply count on Kim Cascone's experience in selecting quality sounds. From Here to Tranquility - Volume 8 (the darkened path) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - STEEL - DRAGON'S EYE TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY Not exactly a year-in-retrospect compilation, but an album to celebrate the twelve years of existence since Yann Novak relaunched his father's record label Dragon's Eye Recordings. The 'steel' in the title is 'named after the traditional eleventh anniversary gift (due to miscalculation and a love for the cover art by Jake Muir)'. A 'variety of styles, processes, practices, techniques, and most importantly points of view' is presented in this Name-Your-Price download featuring unreleased tracks by artists that recently released work on the label. Such as: Steve Pacheco, Tobias Hellkvist, Robert Crouch, Yann Novak, Jake Muir, Fabio Perletta, Geneva Skeen, Mark Kate and wndfrm. 78 Minutes of sheer minimalist joy. Steel: Dragon's Eye Twelfth Anniversary by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - RUSTED TONE SAMPLER I Rusted Tone Recordings does not look back to 2017 because it did not exist in 2017. It is a new independent label, curated by James Armstrong, 'specialising in ambient, drone and experimental music'. Judged by this introduction sampler the label will definitely be worth keeping an eye on: it introduces artists that will be releasing albums on Rusted Tone in the coming year. Think: Darren Harper, James Osland, Wil Bolton, Green Kingdom, Spheruleus - along less familiar names like Gallery Six & Oblivia, Net, Kepier Widow, Saltings and Kevin Buchland. Suffices to say this introduction succeeds in raising interest for the label! This, too, is a Name-Your-Price download if you want. But please keep in mind that proceeds 'will go towards supporting physical releases and sustaining Rusted Tone Recordings.' Rusted Tone Recordings: Sampler Vol. 1 by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - GRENZWELLEN I A somewhat different beast (and with that I mean considerably less ambient) is this massive compilation supporting the German radio show Grenzwellen, hosted by Ecki Stieg and broadcasted on Radio Hannover. Grenzwellen started in 1987 so it exists for more than thirty years now! It can be heard every wednesday for three hours starting at 9 pm CET via the Radio Hannover livestream. But even if you can't listen to their show this compilation is a great introduction to the music that can be heard on this show. Almost 4 hours of all kinds of experimental/electronic music in a mix of well- and lesser-known artist. I won't mention them all, but here are just a few of the names that I recognise: Giulio Aldinucci, Gabi Delgado, Ulrich Schnauss, CEEYS, Marsen Jules Trio (with a 15 minute string version of Étoiles de la Nuit), Bersarin Quartett, Bartosz Dziadosz, Hecq, Arovane,Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Sven Laux, Sankt Otten, Markus Guentner, Richard Chartier, Hotel Neon. 31 Tracks, and most of them previously unreleased. Grenzwellen host and compilation curator Ecki Stieg advises to play the compilation in its entirety: "please listen in the order given. Don't use the random button!." Grenzwellen Eins by Grenzwellen VARIOUS ARTISTS - MUSIC FOR ELEVATORS And, while on the subject of massive compilation projects this one cannot stay unmentioned. Only recently I became aware of a series of (free download) releases by the Mahorka netlabel called "Music for Elevators." A nice reference to many ambient "Music for ..." releases, as well as to 'Elevator Music' - which is usually referring to anonymous 'Muzak'. The first edition of this series was released way back in 2002, followed by Vol. 2 in 2005, Vol. 3 in 2007, Vol. 4 in 2012. The three-part set Vol. 5, which is said to conclude the series, was released in 2017 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). You can still find the complete set online: the first four editions can be found on Archive.org (free downloads), the three-part Vol. 5 on Bandcamp (Name-Your-Price). So that is quite an impressive batch of unknown music to discover. Unknown - because in the tradition of netlabels, Mahorka presents the work of artists that are largely unknown - with the occasional exception depending on how 'deep' you are into the scene. "You are on board for a pushing all kinds of boundaries trip through what ambient music can be and what can be ambient music." 'Ambient' is not a very strict definition here, probably 'experimental electronic' would have been a more appropriate label. There are quite a few tracks that would probably scare the hell out of any ordinary citizen who got stuck in an elevator. But in a collection like this, everyone will find a lot of sounds to his/her liking! Music For Elevators Vol.5 (Part 1) by Various Artists

With our first edition of May, we’ve had a fifty, fifty split between ambient & experiment and the more uptempo melodic sounds arrived on our desk this month, we were going to make this podcast in two halves, but decided to mix the two together giving you light and shade variations over the three hours. If there is any thoughts on this do let us have your comments, On the list we have the latest releases from Ian Boddy & Markus Reuter, Vanderson, Syndromeda, Robert Rich & Markus Reuter, Baltes & Erbe and Romerium, with one track from Lomita, Jaja, Mindphaser, C J Rogers and David Parsons last album Puja, which we managed to get hold of, Mick’s a great fan of his music. Some names not familiar to us here, include Arovane & Porya Hatami, Carlo Celuque, Natural Life Essence & Threadbare, with a mixture of Berlin School, dark & experimental ambient excursions to Chill-out sound. With the release of Steve Jolliffe’s new autobiography, including a copy of Cyclone, plus a short unreleased track from Tangerine Dream from 1967, Steve’s brief association with the group in Berlin, with just Edgar Froese & Klaus Schulze, we’ve included the track Bent Side Coldwalk from that album, Steve was a major influence on that release, the first one with vocals which split the fans somewhat and rumours had it Edgar hated it. It’s been nearly two years since Arovane came back to the scene with his Ve Palor on n5MD. Since then, Uwe Zahn, managed to self release two more fascinating experimental albums, Eleeve and lyid skor, which you can pick up on his bandcamp. We’ve also been honored to host a Headphone Commute Mix by Arovane back in 2013, and so when we reached out for a refresher, he happily obliged. Given a total freedom of selection, Zahn picked some challenging, fascinating, and extremely fun pieces for your enjoyment. What’s unique and incredibly enchanting about mixes by Roel Funcken is that he doesn’t simply select and lay out his favorite pieces – he also manipulates them into a gorgeous matrimony of sounds. As a long time producer and member of Funckarma (along with his brother Don), Funcken lightly applies minimal effects to already stunning collection of tracks, and dissipates all sudden spikes in transition. This particular mix is full of beautiful music by the likes of Rafael Anton Irisarri, Rival Consoles, Hior Chronik, Nils Frahm, Arovane, Clark, Burial, Deaf Center and many of this other favorites... I recommend you listen without the below tracklisting and see how many tracks you recognize... Enjoy! For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com
The first show of 2014 jam-packed (a phrase I seem to repeat incessantly on the show) with strangeness, weirdness and oddness. Arovane, The Passenger, Time Attendant, Police Des Moeurs, gig guide and details of the forthcoming More Than Human release party. All quite champion.
Our latest episode highlights some anticipated new releases from Deltron 3030, Nightmares on Wax, Oneohtrix Point Never, Sven Weisemann, Arovane, and features some excellent tracks from Ras G, Neil Landstrumm, CFCF, and Maya Jane Coles. It’s well worth the two hours of life required to listen. Thanks for supporting these lovely artists and the local […]
There is much I can say about Uwe Zahn, yet I think I have said most of it in my review. So instead, I’ll let Uwe tell you about this particular selection: the selection of tracks you will hear on this mix has greatly influenced my music. this mix is like a journey for me, full of memories triggered by sounds. you will hear some unreleased arovane tracks i’ve produced in the 80′s and 90′s with the waldorf microwave, emu sampler (sequenced by a yamaha qy700) a delay and a four track recorder. Sometime around 2001 I discovered the album Tides by Arovane. I'm not sure if it qualifies as "post-digital" or "blip hop" or "micro" music but it was through that album that I began a brief love affair with the style of music known as "glitch." I have always loved electronic & ambient music but at the end of the 1990s I had lost interest in berlin style electronics and mostly listened to straight ambient. But with the emergence of glitch, and it's use of complicated beats, noise and samples, I found a new rhythmic electronic music to dive into. The biggest purveyor of glitch music back then was the Mille Plateaux label. With their Click & Cuts series they introduced me to a whole new range of sound in music. There is definitely a lot of music from that time period that, while interesting, could become annoying as well. I'm not a fan of loud and aggressive glitch. I definitely am more in tune with the sort of stuff put out by 12k. Over time I grew tired of much of the glitch scene and the never ending little pops & clicks & wee little sounds intruding on the music. Although I still enjoy much of 12k music. Recently I was organizing some of my collection & revisited some old glitch material. I found that I am still very fond of some of it. I started collecting tracks for this mix and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. So this mix is a little step back in time to the early 2000s. A small glitch in the passing of time to when glitch ruled, for me anyway. Enjoy. We're all over the musical landscape again this week on The HSS. The show opens with some stretching and the mathletics of the Foals and their track Hummer. Ms John Soda picks up the pieces and gets us into groove with Unsleeping. Alt-J brings the quirk and the vocal syncopations in Dissolve Me. The show takes a turn into more familiar territory with Budapest's Weldroid then a Leftfield track featuring the legendary Afrika Bambaataa and Afrika Shox. Crystal Castles and Thermostatic both bring the 8 bit goodness with their tracks Crimewave and Reasons. The show gets ambiently glitchy as we head into IDM starting with one from r.roo called Drops. The Last Gambit drops Attention! The Colour Is Bleeding then perennial faves Arovane and Phonem bring a couple called Tabl F and Water Rights. The show simmers down and closes with Xela and his beauty Afraid of Monsters.
This week's show starts off with some nice bumping glitchiness thanks to Caribou and Beat & The Pulse. We then set course for a little hiphop flavoured funk thanks to our man Cut Chemist but not without passing through some Mogwai rock and touches of dubbiness. We then turn it right around and mellow out with ambience and glitch coming from Arovane as Khonnor keeps the groove rolling while we chill out and finish off with Donato Wharton softness. What the heck? Two sea/water mixes in a row? I didn't plan it this way. It just sort of happened that I collected a few sea songs, then the library/soundtrack mix got done, then I found a few more sea songs and this mix happened. "lost at sea" is very similar to "a solitary sea" from last year. Some nice drifting, flowing tunes with a definite sea/ocean feel to them. And of course all the tunes have the word "sea" in the title. The mix works really well on foggy mornings, standing out on the deck letting the music flow all around you. There's not much else to say except that I hope you enjoy this latest collection. 'Glorious lo-fi glitchy beats in this four track EP from guest artist Synkretic. Reminiscences of class acts such as Autechre, Arovane, Esem and Boards of Canada in a collaboration of sound'
