From its debut in 1949 to its final broadcast in 1962, it followed the adventures of Johnny Dollar—America's “fabulous freelance insurance investigator”—as he tackled high-stakes fraud, mysterious disappearances, and deadly deceptions, all while meticulously documenting his expenses. Johnny wasn't your typical gumshoe. He didn't work for the police or a detective agency—his cases came straight from the world of insurance claims. Whether it was a suspicious death, a missing person, or a million-dollar con, Johnny took the case, traveling across the country—and sometimes around the world—armed with little more than his wits, a badge of credibility from his employer, and a knack for getting into trouble. The show's signature format set it apart. Each story was told through Johnny's first-person narration as he recounted his cases via his expense account. As the host of No Sleep 'til Sudbury for the past eight years, I've been fortunate enough to enjoy some pretty gratifying experiences. After an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City, Dr. Bellows established ALL PETS DENTAL in Weston, Florida, specializing in companion animal medicine, surgery, and dentistry. Bellows is board-certified in Canine and Feline Medicine (ABVP) and Veterinary Dentistry (AVDC). His leadership roles include serving as president of the American Veterinary Dental College and the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry. He has authored five dental textbooks and frequently contributed to veterinary publications. As a respected expert, Dr. Bellows was instrumental in developing AAHA's Small Animal Dental Guidelines. He has been a consultant for the Veterinary Information Network's dental board since 1993. DVM360 announced Dr. Bellows as the national 2024 Dental Hero by DVM360 magazine. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Bellows is an avid marathon runner and enjoys spending time with his family and dogs in Florida and Colorado. Amanda Bellows is a U.S. historian who teaches at The New School, a university in New York City. She is the author of American Slavery and Russian Serfdom in the Post-Emancipation Imagination, and a new book that is the subject of this interview, The Explorers: A New History of America in Ten Expeditions. Amanda received her Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Explorers is a series of biographical essays of people most of you have heard of – Sacagawea, John Muir, and Amelia Earhart – and people most of you haven't heard of – James Beckwourth, Matthew Henson and William Sheppard – sewn together with the common theme of exploration. The book had come recommended to me by a couple of fans of the podcast so I jumped at the chance to have Amanda on.  I learned a lot from The Explorers, and of course have a link in the show notes on the website if you want to buy it after hearing our conversation. We've seen this movie before: some government official, some prosecutor, some law enforcement agent does something to hold Donald Trump accountable for his crimes, and Trump posts things about the person designed to inspire his supporters to threats and violence against that person. Most recently, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows followed Maine's elections laws and her oath of office, and disqualified Trump from the Maine ballot. So, of course, Trump posted Secretary Bellows' bio and the threats started pouring in. Trump is on pretrial release in four felony cases. The law provides that, when there is clear and convincing evidence that a person under felony indictment poses a threat to the community or any person in the community, that defendant is to be detained pending trial. Glenn says it's long past time that the institutions of government apply the nation's pretrial detention laws to Trump as those laws are applied to every other person who is pending trial in a felony case.
