We did it. You did it. I did it. It was done. What is IT? 100 episodes! Woo hoo! This episode of the School Of Laughs podcast is brought to you by Chelle Baxter, Peter Margaritas, Sandi Joy Chadwick and John Charlton - thanks! It is crazy to think that a couple of years ago we started this journey together. When we did, I had no idea that we would make it to 100 episodes of the School Of Laughs podcast. I hoped to. Just didn't know if it was going to be something I could pull off. What a ride! With help from Gavin Miller, the ball got rolling and rolling and ... I've learned a lot! Hopefully you have as well. We've listened to jokes go from the brainstorming phase to the stage. We've talked with Letterman comics like Jeff Caldwell, Keith Alberstadt and Andy Hendrickson. We heard from Tonight Show regular Nate Bargatze and his dad Stephen. Comedy Central comedians Robert Mac, Luis Ramey and Pat McGann also shared insights. Seasoned veterans Jeff Jena, Jeff Allen and Dan Swartout also shared many golden nuggets of information about becoming a comedian. We also heard from folks who write for TV like Martha Bolton and Scott Dunn. We learned booking tips from Tim Grable and Midwest Clean Comedy. We know now what it takes to record a CD, and a DVD as well as how to put on your own shows. Former students (Monty Mitchell, Jonnie W., Brian Bates, Chris Cherry, Mike James, and Paulina Combow) stopped by to share their successes. WOW. So where do we go from here? The plan is to continue for the next three months and see if there is enough interest and support through PATREON (see below) to continue. If so, we will lock in for another full year. If not, we will ride on into the sunset and sleep well knowing we gave it our all. On today's episode, I reflect back on the past year and what lies ahead. Specifically, I talk about: The Broken record Comedy Show with Chad Riden Listener feedback emails from YOU the listener What it takes to put together a podcast My favorite episodes from the first 100 We check in with Gavin Miller And a lot more. Thank you so much for listening and I hope to continue to provide you with beneficial information and tactical strategies for becoming BIGGER, BETTER and MORE BOOKABLE! Support the podcast through PATREON A listener recently told me about Patreon and I totally love this concept. In a nutshell, in exchange for a small RECURRING monthly donation of your choice, you gain access to many extra opportunities to interact with the show. My favorite bonus is our very own, private “School Of Laughs Patreon News Feed”. Think of it as a Facebook page without all the drama. In this feed I will post exclusive articles, bonus podcasts and more. And of course, you will be invited to share ideas and support other listeners of the show! The funds would help offset the costs associated with time incurred producing the show, and at the same time give you more of what I believe you find valuable. It's up to you as far as the amount. We average 4 episodes a month and are hoping you feel like the information is worth at least $1.25 a show. So, a monthly pledge of $5 is our hope. More is great, less is still helpful. If we reach the target of 200 patrons (which is just a fraction of the overall listener downloads per episode), I think we would be on track to continue the production of the show and creating opportunities for you to grow as a performer and see definite returns on your support. In short, I want to continue to provide the podcast and reach out to bigger names, more helpful comics and incredible resources. Please VISIT www.SchoolOfLaughs.com/Patreon or www.Patron.com/SchoolOfLaughs to find out more.
Have you ever had a few joke ideas collecting dust in your notebook? Former student and YouTube star Kate Spellman and Gavin Miller join me at the writing table to pitch a couple of joke ideas that need to see daylight. We all offer up two potential premises and decide on one each. Then we brainstorm on one comedy premise each and try to: Clarify the premise Spin it in different directions Challenge each other to take the ideas further Punch up the misdirection And generally, move the joke further along The idea here is to get concepts out of your notebook and see if someone else can find an angle (or ten) you weren't thinking about. We don't get locked into perfecting the joke. In fact, we focus solely on the comedy premise today. We simply explore as many angles as possible and will work on punch lines later. One tip: Avoid editing or saying NO to ideas right away. Allow your brain to explore the possibilities of every suggestion. The analytical half of your brain will destroy the creative process if you let it intrude. You can go back at a later time by yourself and decide on what to throw out and what to keep. Each of us will get a rough version of our joke ready to perform (and record) before we meet up again. This is a fun episode and you get to play along if you like. If you have any ideas for Gavin's joke you can send them to him at @GavinMiller42 on Twitter. Kate can best be reached at @kmspellman and katespellman2@gmail.com. And, if you have any ideas for me send them to SchoolOfLaughs@Gmail.Com. Of course, the best thing for you to do would be to call up two buddies and run a writer's table for your jokes. Take advantage of the power of brainstorming. You can get 3x a better joke with the help of a couple creative people. And don't limit yourself to just other comics. ANYONE could offer up a gem of an idea regardless of their background. Comedy Central's first ever LIVE stand-up comedy broadcast was a huge success. WHY? Because they turned the keys over to master comedian Brian Regan and he took us on a fun drive. Some of us he left off at "the next exit", but for those who stayed on board it was awesome. As any comedian knows, performing is like walking a high wire. One little slip and the whole show can go careening off track. Add to that a packed house, television cameras, and no edits ... and you've got a circus act even P. T. Barnum himself would pay to see. Brian Regan was definitely the man for the job. TV clean? Check. Energetic and enjoyable? Check. Skilled and able? Check. Funny? Double check, underline and circle. No doubt about it. With over 30 years of stage experience, the youngest 57 year old in the world gave new comics a clinic on how to put on a show. Specifically, he demonstrated: Excellent material choices Well crafted routines Steady pacing Precision timing Vocal variety Surprising twists Engaging facial expressions Deliberate set structure and ... need I mention sticking to his time? In a broadcast with a lot on the line Brian Regan delivered. Listen in to a discussion of the event with Jonnie W. and Gavin Miller and myself. Let us know what you thought about the performance. In episode 036 “Live Comedy Writing Session - Idea to Premise” I asked Gavin Miller (brand new aspiring comedian and our excellent producer) to bring in a few joke ideas to the School Of Laughs headquarters. He did. We took three joke ideas and selected one for him to write. The premise, in essence, is that a friend of his suggested she would help homeless people connect with society by giving them Facebook access. The emphasis of the joke is on the idea that technology may only make things worse. Then in episode 042 “Comedy Writing Session Follow Up” Gavin brought the premise back and had a few punch lines ready to go. He also included some ideas from listeners, who had offered angles through twitter, email, etc., Now … some three months later, we hear a clip of Gavin on stage doing the joke. How did it turn out??? Ha – you'll have to listen! Needless to day, there are some lessons to learn from the experience. Many lessons. Many. Lessons. Oh boy. Let's just say, a lot of lessons. These lessons all translate to tips you can use in your own stand-up comedy approach. With the talk of presidential candidates in the air here in the United States, producer Gavin Miller and I got to thinking about what we want in a leader. Oddly enough, many traits we identified are also traits of great comedians. Candidates are definitely characters. Comedians are as well. But what are the common links that cross over from one pursuit to the other? In this episode, we discuss 9 traits that comedians and presidents share. Specifically, we talk about: Being able to differentiate yourself from the others Becoming “known” for what you believe in Why establishing trust is key (in three different areas) How actions you take to day should also benefit you years later How 4-8 years in the spotlight can take a toll Willingness to identify weaknesses Sticking to your vision or comedic “Point Of View” Performing due diligence before taking swift action How diplomacy can help during a show Freeing yourself from tasks that you can delegate to someone else The importance of Iowa to both groups And much, much more! In episode 36 “Live Writing Session” our producer (and aspiring comedian) Gavin Miller brought in a few concepts to brainstorm. After he pitched a few ideas we decided to work on one that was inspired by a friend of his. In a nutshell, the friend wanted to give homeless people easy access to Facebook so they could feel more connected to society. For the better part of forty-five minutes we went back and forth offering up ideas and angles for where this loose premise could lead. This is a process I call “EXPAND”. When we recorded episode 36 we encouraged you to participate and offer your ideas to Gavin via Twitter, FB, etc., It was fun to hear the ideas suggested. In fact, a couple of ideas are now key parts to his joke. Fast forward to today's episode. I asked Gavin to come back in with an update on where the brainstorming led. From there we began to “CONDENSE” his material and start creating set-ups, and punch lines. Throughout this process we discuss: · Allowing some concepts to fade out for the betterment of the joke · One angle we should have seen the whole time · Why giving details is important · Avoiding ambiguity in your punch lines · When introducing an antagonist can benefit a joke · The challenge of writing jokes and being on the air at the same time Please let us know if you enjoy this type of episode. I will record more with more established comics in the future if these are helpful. ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF LAUGHS: This podcast is a production of the Rik Roberts School Of Laughs. This week, in honor of LaughFest you get two bonus interviews. Last year I was honored to perform in the clean comedy showcase during the festival. It was a blast and I got to work with several great comedians. You've already heard the interviews with Andy Hendrickson, Pat McGann, and James P. Connolly. This week I am releasing the two remaining interviews Tony Deyo and Robert Mac. Robert Mac has put in two decades behind the mic but hit his stride the last seven years or so as he developed a persona on stage who is both confident and clueless at the same time. Now a Comedy Central veteran, we discuss his his time in the San Francisco comedy scene the benefits of being able to write for t.v. and the value of pursuing different niches Check out RobertMac.com for more and be sure to watch his Comedy Central Clip! NOTE: The sound quality is a little off since I was recording without stellar producer Gavin Miller. But, they are great comics and both had a lot of insight for beginners and established comedians alike. == If you enjoy this PODCAST please subscribe in iTunes or STITCHER and leave a comment and ranking. Comedian Tony Deyo began his comedy career during a brief stint in Austin while he was also a full-time middle school band instructor. Realizing he would regret not trying to live his dream Tony took a local comedy class that helped him get the courage to get onstage and pursue stand-up comedy. Now, with an appearance on CONAN under his belt he's marching his way across the country commanding one stage after another.
