St. Leo the Great, Pope of Rome (+461) calls us to embark on the Holy Fast of Nativity with gratitude and active love for God and neighbor. “For by prayer we seek to propitiate God, by fasting we extinguish the lusts of the flesh, by alms we redeem our sins: and at the same time God's image is throughout renewed in us, if we are always ready to praise Him, unfailingly intent on our purification and unceasingly active in cherishing our neighbor.”
Christmas is still being celebrated as the 12 Days are counted down. What's continuing from Jesus Christ's big day is the spreading of this joy on earth. There's still more to come through the evening of January 5! Share the Good Cheer! Full participation for Christmas 2023 included 6 weeks before, via the Nativity Fast or in the Western Church it was the 4 weeks before Christmas with the 4 Sundays of Advent. It can be difficult in today's world to find time to focus on God. It has become too easy for us to skip our prayers or to be late for Church. During our Nativity Fast, the Church has offered to us the blessing to pay attention to God. When we allow the life of the Church, we have opportunities to focus on God, not just following the rules.
Today is November 28, 2022. I am still working on Ben's hat. I talked about how I am planning on knitting socks, hats and scarves for the homeless in my area. I talk about my Thanksgiving issue with Green Bean Casserole. I also discuss a little about the Nativity Fast. On Black Friday, after going to the gym, I went to Yarnivore with my mother and picked up some beautiful yarn from Jody Long called Rovesoft. I found some colors that will be great to see in the dark. I also talk about a little about how I consider knitting art and my history with art in general. I also talk about how I love to give my art away and want people to appreciate and enjoy wearing and feeling my art. I am looking for an Eastern Orthodox Saint who knitted. I am still searching for that, if you know of them please let me know. I am available to knit socks if you would like me to. I also can test out yarns for socks. Just reach out for either of these and lets get talking. If you have thoughts or suggestions to make this show more valuable to you please feel free to reach out on my social media links below. As we work our way through the Nativity Fast, Fr. Tom cautions us not to get bogged down in earthly matters, but to embrace our healing in the incarnate Christ.
St. Paisius writes, “…having eaten, one should be a little hungry so that the body will be submissive to the spirit and capable of labors and sensitive to mental movements, and so the bodily passions will be conquered.”“A moderate and sensible fast is the foundation and chief of all virtues. One should fight evil as one fights a lion and a fierce serpent—in the infirmity of the body and spiritual poverty. He who wishes his mind to be firm against defiled thoughts should make his body refined through fasting.”Blessed Nativity Fast to all! On Nov 15/28 we begin the Nativity Fast and commemorate St. Paisius (+1794). May we struggle well, by the prayers of St. Paisius and the great mercy of God.Text of this reading: https://orthochristian.com/88203.htmlIf you are not familiar with St. Paisius, you should be. He is one of the most significant Saints in the last few hundred years and much of the rebirth of monasticism and spiritual heights in recent years can trace itself back to his labors. Learn more about this great Saint here: https://stpaisiusmonastery.org/about-...Here is a book of his writings that, to my knowledge, is out of print: http://austroca.org/wp-content/upload...This channel is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. This week, the Nativity Fast began for Orthodox Christians around the world. This 40-day period, is a time in which we prepare for the Nativity of our Lord according to the flesh. But, as we watch our diets and take meat out of our lives, an important question comes up: is the impossible burger permissible? It's not technically meat, but it looks, smells, and tastes like meat … So, does it fit the fast? The Bottom Line: when we fast, we have to be sure we don't miss the forest for the trees.
He was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and a diligent student of the Law and the Prophets. When he first met Jesus, he followed Him right away and told Nathanael, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote" (John 1) After Christ's Ascension, Philip was chosen to proclaim the Gospel in Asia (the western province of Asia Minor). He traveled with Bartholomew (commemorated June 11) and his sister Mariamne, all of them joyfully enduring great sufferings and persecutions in the Lord's service. In Hierapolis in Phrygia, they healed the Governor's wife of an eye affliction, and she believed in the Lord. The Governor was so infuriated by this that he had Philip crucified upside-down. At the moment he gave up his soul to God, the ground opened, swallowing up a great many pagan priests and the Governor. Many of the surviving pagans, terrified, believed in Christ and were baptized by Bartholomew. Saint Bartholomew went on to preach the Gospel in many places; Mariamne traveled to the Jordan River, where she reposed in peace. Among the Slavic peoples, the Nativity Fast is often called Filipovka since it commences immediately after this feast.

Awaiting His Advent Actively, Colossians 3:1-11, when read alongside the invitation and warning of Psalm 94/5, speaks of our hope, our mandate, our warning, our exchange, and our identity. These themes show us how us to engage in active waiting for Christ during this time of Advent/the Nativity Fast.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2) Why do we fast from good things like tasty food? A the start of the Nativity Fast, we'll share three basic reasons why fasting helps transform our spiritual lives. But then we'll go a little deeper and explore why these same reasons suggest you should fast, not just from food, but from social media as well. As always, we've prepared a FREE downloadable workbook to help you act on what you'll learn: https://mailchi.mp/goarch/bethebee157

Christ came to restore sight to the blind beggars of the world. Let us embrace the disciplines and spirit of the Nativity Fast in ways that will help us see that that is precisely who we are. Let us acquire the humility necessary to receive and share the peace that He was born to bring to the world. That is how we must all prepare to welcome Him into our hearts and lives at Christmas.

A reading of the "Lost Gospel of Mary" (Frederica's name for it), from her book of that title. The scholarly name is "the Protevangelion of James" (or "protevangelium" in Latin). It is a timely story for Nativity Fast because it covers the Virgin's life from her conception through the birth of Christ and the slaughter of the innocents.
