St. Leo the Great, Pope of Rome (+461) offers another homily during the Holy Fast of Nativity calling us again to active love for God and neighbor. "[Satan] is aroused with keener stings of hatred, that under a false profession of the Christian name he may corrupt those whom he is not allowed to attack with open and bloody persecutions, and for this work he has heretics in his service whom he has led astray from the catholic Faith..."

St. Leo the Great, Pope of Rome (+461) calls us to embark on the Holy Fast of Nativity with gratitude and active love for God and neighbor. “For by prayer we seek to propitiate God, by fasting we extinguish the lusts of the flesh, by alms we redeem our sins: and at the same time God's image is throughout renewed in us, if we are always ready to praise Him, unfailingly intent on our purification and unceasingly active in cherishing our neighbor.”
Christmas is still being celebrated as the 12 Days are counted down. What's continuing from Jesus Christ's big day is the spreading of this joy on earth. There's still more to come through the evening of January 5! Share the Good Cheer! Full participation for Christmas 2023 included 6 weeks before, via the Nativity Fast or in the Western Church it was the 4 weeks before Christmas with the 4 Sundays of Advent. These activities culminated with Christmas Eve. Christmas Day was Day 1, the first day of the celebrating of this great gift from above! It can be difficult in today's world to find time to focus on God. It has become too easy for us to skip our prayers or to be late for Church. During our Nativity Fast, the Church has offered to us the blessing to pay attention to God. When we allow the life of the Church, we have opportunities to focus on God, not just following the rules.
Today is November 28, 2022. I am still working on Ben's hat. I talked about how I am planning on knitting socks, hats and scarves for the homeless in my area. I talk about my Thanksgiving issue with Green Bean Casserole. I also discuss a little about the Nativity Fast. On Black Friday, after going to the gym, I went to Yarnivore with my mother and picked up some beautiful yarn from Jody Long called Rovesoft. I found some colors that will be great to see in the dark. I also talk about a little about how I consider knitting art and my history with art in general. I also talk about how I love to give my art away and want people to appreciate and enjoy wearing and feeling my art. I am looking for an Eastern Orthodox Saint who knitted. I am still searching for that, if you know of them please let me know. I am available to knit socks if you would like me to. I also can test out yarns for socks. Just reach out for either of these and lets get talking. If you have thoughts or suggestions to make this show more valuable to you please feel free to reach out on my social media links below. Tonight we continued our reading of hypothesis 18 which focuses upon the importance of seeking the counsel of those who have an experiential knowledge of the spiritual life. We do not live out our Christian life as individuals. Even the monk living in the greatest solitude understands the radical solidarity that he has with others in the life of the Church. The stories that we are presented with here this evening show us that the desire of monks to seek out the counsel of elders; and not only the desire but the necessity of doing so. To try to walk along the spiritual path, to try and engage in the spiritual battle alone is foolhardy. Inevitably, we will fall to one of the passions or we will find ourselves in the grip of the Evil One. Humility is key. Our lives have to be radically focused upon the truth and most of all the poverty and the weakness that sin has brought into our lives. We must acknowledge that it is by God alone that we are saved ; and that it is by his grace that we are able to engage in the ascetical life. We must avoid self-styled asceticism that lacks discretion. No matter how wise we might be we must believe that we are in need of learning and counsel. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:55:48 Forrest Cavalier: My summary of this discussion to Anthony's questions: We know by fruits: Wicked self-doubt leads towards despair, quietism (on one side) or self-reliant Pelagianism (on the other.) Proper self-doubt: recognize our poverty, leading to grace, trust, unity to body of Christ. 01:00:04 John Clark: Pre V2 you were required to fast after Midnight the night before attending mass and not eat anything if receiving the Holy Host… 01:00:47 Carol Nypaver: Yep….not even water. 01:08:43 Eric Williams: If disciplines become perfunctory, the Church should inform consciences and instruct the ignorant, not discard the disciplines.

In Orthodox tradition there is a clear liturgical transition into the fast of Great Lent, but that seems to be largely missing in the Nativity Fast. Fr Geoffrey and Fr Yuri help us look a little more carefully for the nuances of the Orthodox expressions of Advent - a period of waiting, or postponing, as we anticipate the coming of Christ. As this experience of Advent disappears in the West, it is becoming even more important for Orthodox Christians to witness the spirit of slowing down, desiring and longing for the feast. In our fourth season, Fr Yuri and Fr Geoffrey are releasing episodes on a variety of topics that were previously only available to our patrons. If you like what you hear, and would like access to much more - including monthly livestreams - please consider supporting our project by heading to patreon.com/enactingthekingdom and choosing a tier of support. St. Paisius writes, “…having eaten, one should be a little hungry so that the body will be submissive to the spirit and capable of labors and sensitive to mental movements, and so the bodily passions will be conquered.”“A moderate and sensible fast is the foundation and chief of all virtues. One should fight evil as one fights a lion and a fierce serpent—in the infirmity of the body and spiritual poverty. He who wishes his mind to be firm against defiled thoughts should make his body refined through fasting.”Blessed Nativity Fast to all! On Nov 15/28 we begin the Nativity Fast and commemorate St. Paisius (+1794). May we struggle well, by the prayers of St. Paisius and the great mercy of God.Text of this reading: https://orthochristian.com/88203.htmlIf you are not familiar with St. Paisius, you should be. He is one of the most significant Saints in the last few hundred years and much of the rebirth of monasticism and spiritual heights in recent years can trace itself back to his labors. This Sunday, we begin our advent worship series “Housing the Holy” which will culminate the Sunday after Christmas. Interestingly, rather than Jesus, Mary, or Joseph, this series takes the “Innkeeper” from the Bethlehem narrative as its starting point. You see, the Innkeeper was confronted with a huge problem and they had to figure out something, anything, to help this family. So they used the resources they had for good, and in the birth of Jesus we witness the inbreaking of the Divine into our world. How might we make the most of our resources or the resources at Westwood? How can we best house the holy? One thing is for certain, more often than not we have to make space when we invite anyone into our homes. For our sermon this Sunday we are going to explore the spiritual practice of fasting and what we might learn from this practice to make room for the holy. To be sure, we usually associate fasting with Lent, but the Eastern Church observes a “Nativity Fast” in preparation for the birth of Christ, understanding fasting as a way to “make more room” for the Holy and shift our focus to care of the neighbor. In a time when so many are suffering the economic consequences of the pandemic, we are invited this year to create room for more hope in the world as we learn to reallocate and multiply resources in ways that are just and right.
Fr. Moses reflects on some perhaps forgotten aspects of the Nativity Fast, which is known in the West as "Advent."
This week, the Nativity Fast began for Orthodox Christians around the world. This 40-day period, is a time in which we prepare for the Nativity of our Lord according to the flesh. But, as we watch our diets and take meat out of our lives, an important question comes up: is the impossible burger permissible? It's not technically meat, but it looks, smells, and tastes like meat … So, does it fit the fast? The Bottom Line: when we fast, we have to be sure we don't miss the forest for the trees.

He was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and a diligent student of the Law and the Prophets. When he first met Jesus, he followed Him right away and told Nathanael, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote" (John 1) After Christ's Ascension, Philip was chosen to proclaim the Gospel in Asia (the western province of Asia Minor). He traveled with Bartholomew (commemorated June 11) and his sister Mariamne, all of them joyfully enduring great sufferings and persecutions in the Lord's service. In Hierapolis in Phrygia, they healed the Governor's wife of an eye affliction, and she believed in the Lord. The Governor was so infuriated by this that he had Philip crucified upside-down. At the moment he gave up his soul to God, the ground opened, swallowing up a great many pagan priests and the Governor. Many of the surviving pagans, terrified, believed in Christ and were baptized by Bartholomew. Saint Bartholomew went on to preach the Gospel in many places; Mariamne traveled to the Jordan River, where she reposed in peace. Among the Slavic peoples, the Nativity Fast is often called Filipovka since it commences immediately after this feast.

The great feast of the Nativity comes upon us quickly! Just as we have been preparing our hearts now during the Nativity Fast for many weeks, so the world itself prepared from generation to generation for the coming of the Saviour. With each passing generation, the Advent of the Lord approaches - sometimes seemingly imperceptibly... until that great day in which the Sun of Righteousness dawns! So also, for us, with each passing day the great Feast approaches - are we making the preparations we should in order to meet the Newborn King?

Let’s take advantage of the unique opportunity ‘Covina’ isolation offers as we head into the Christmas season. Participate in daily Advent meditations or the Nativity Fast . Shake off this doubt in our world! As preparations for their trek to Bethlehem began for the Virgin Mary and Joseph, we too have the opportunity to celebrate life by preparing for the joy Christmas brings to our world. Why not start the season earlier (like today) and end the Christmas season later? (12 days of Xmas ends January 6) Take a moment and consider partaking in the pre-Christmas activities during Advent or the Nativity Fast… You’ll be glad you did. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2) Why do we fast from good things like tasty food? A the start of the Nativity Fast, we'll share three basic reasons why fasting helps transform our spiritual lives. But then we'll go a little deeper and explore why these same reasons suggest you should fast, not just from food, but from social media as well. Christ came to restore sight to the blind beggars of the world. Let us embrace the disciplines and spirit of the Nativity Fast in ways that will help us see that that is precisely who we are. Let us acquire the humility necessary to receive and share the peace that He was born to bring to the world. That is how we must all prepare to welcome Him into our hearts and lives at Christmas.

Ephesians 1:16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Come and See! Come and Pray! Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is true FREEDOM. For God has not given us a SPIRIT of Fear but of LOVE, POWER, and a Sound MIND. Those that are led by the Spirit of God are the Sons of God. Not every spirit is of God. Test the spirits to see. Those that do not confess Jesus Christ is Lord and has come in the flesh are not of God but of the evil one and the anti-Christ. December 1, 2018 – THE NATIVITY FAST – ADVENT --- O Come! O Come, Emmanuel! Episode 23 of Morning Prayer with Father Wade was originally broadcast on Saturday, December 2, 2018. Emmanuel means "God with Us" and when God, who is LOVE, comes within a person, a situation, a city, a nation, a world, GOOD THINGS happen. The good fruit produced by the Advent of the Lord is the LOVE that we have all hoped for and longed for and desired to have to share with others. Here is the Fruit of the Spirit, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 5:22–6:2 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/friarwade/support
Let's Pray together in the Morning! The Nativity Fast One of the perpetual questions that is always asked at this time of year is, "when is it proper to sing Christmas Carols or decorate for Christmas." Unlike the Fast of Lent, which is really a preparation for Holy Week, the Nativity Fast is one of joyful expectation. In recent years there has been a renewed emphasis on the cycle of the liturgical year. The traditions of an earlier age are being presented to the contemporary membership of our churches in an attempt to bring a spiritual element to the cycle of daily life, which has become so secularized. One of the most important seasons to be re-discovered has been the season of Advent, the fast before the celebration of Christmas. Advent, the Western name of this fast period, comes from the Latin verb “advenire” meaning “to reach” or “to arrive at.” Advent is the preparation for the arrival of the Messiah in the birth of the Christ Child. Have you heard a Call from the Lord? In your heart do you feel a thirst for Living Water? Come! Come! Come! Take of the Water of Life Freely! We are at A Time of Preparation – The Beginning of the Nativity Fast. Christmas is a FEAST! Many people are familiar with the Feasts of the Jews – Tabernacles, Passover, Pentecost, etc. Yet many have LOST the FEASTS celebrated by the ancient Christians realizing that Christ is the fulfillment of all the prophesies and promises found in the Hebrew Scriptures which were inherited by the Church. The Feasts are transformed from the Types and Shadow observance in the Old to the present day reality of the New. Jesus is the mediator of the NEW and BETTER Covenant revealed by the Church. Join us in this time of fasting and prayer called Advent, as we prepare ourselves for the Coming (Advent) of our Lord. This is Episode 21 of Morning Prayer with Father Wade. Part 1- A mini-series for the Christmas Season begins offering ways to expand the joyful parts of this holiday season. I value feedback through the comments section on my website or better via email at NikosSteves@gmail.com The Season of Christmas comes when the Macy’s Day Parade ends at twelve o’clock noon, on Thanksgiving Day. If you’re wary, not to mention weary of having holiday music and incessant prodding to buy foisted upon you, it’s OK… You are entitled to feel pushed and perhaps even cheated by the wizards of sales who’ve planted themselves upon what is suppose to be an earnest time of transitioning. This is the time for reflecting on where we are and to begin considering where we are going in the next year. So as wintertime settles in, now is the time to be preparing for the miraculous birth of Jesus coming into the world and to consider how much God loves us by this offering. And it’s the beginning of the preparations by St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary for their journey to Bethlehem that comes to mind as well. This holiday season, I’m re-playing my podcast mini-series on ways to EXTEND YOUR CHRISTMAS. Because it’s in the way we make time, post Turkey Day that will help enhance our family and friends holiday experience. So take a listen and consider taking time to partake in a pre-Christmas time of Advent or the Nativity Fast. An e-book copy of the book can be found on the website http://ConstantProcession.com Constant Procession tells of key apparitions of the Virgin Mary since she passed on from the world and how she serves humanity through Christianity. The origin of these podcasts began with my book Constant Procession. I've read the entire book from cover to cover (Installments 93-110) To listen from Installment 93 Constant Procession; the podcast; is published every Tuesday morning and has links, photos, video and more information for each episode at ConstantProcession.com

The Parable of the Good Samaritan is read just before the Nativity Fast begins, because it is a beautiful, complete description of the Incarnation, using symbolic language. It is also the answer to the question "Who is my neighbor." This parable, if we understand it, teaches us who we are, and what the Incarnation did. If this knowledge abides in our heart, we know ourselves and easily can answer the question. If a man does not know himself he CANNOT know his neighbor.
Georgia Mamalakis joins us to talk about a group of women joined together over many miles to pray the Psalms during the Nativity Fast but also during Great Lent.
A reading of the "Lost Gospel of Mary" (Frederica's name for it), from her book of that title. The scholarly name is "the Protevangelion of James" (or "protevangelium" in Latin). It is a timely story for Nativity Fast because it covers the Virgin's life from her conception through the birth of Christ and the slaughter of the innocents.
