Steven B. (@steedstylin) from the excellent New To Who podcast is a first-time guest this week. We have much to discuss about "Tomb of the Cybermen", which premiered 55 years ago this week. We take a look at some of the TV story's more questionable choices on race and ethnicity, and discuss what it was like to watch this story in 1967 when it first aired, versus 1992 when it was recovered after being thought lost, versus today. Steven also enthuses over the novel's cover art, and we discuss the great work of Jeff Cummins and other titans of the Target cover-painting range. Here you can find New To Who's Ratings Matrix, a nifty way of ranking all the Doctor Who episodes from worst to best. What are some of our choices for best? An anachronistic Australian podcast materialises in San Francisco (or is that Vancouver?) amid a hail of laughter which finds its intentional targets - three strange men who walk out of the pod.But Col, Dan, and Steven are not the only podcasters in Vancouver. Doctor Who royalty, Jeremy Radick - who appears as Gareth in the 1996 TV Movie - is there as well, joining New To Who for a very special episode.Seven years after disappearing from television screens everywhere, Doctor Who came back - but for one night only. The script for The TV Movie (also unofficially known as “The Enemy Within”) was written by Matthew Jacobs - whose father appeared in the William Hartnell story, The Gunfighters - while Philip Segal was finally able to bring his vision for Doctor Who to a US mainstream audience for the first time in his role as Executive Producer of this American co-production with Fox. Geoffrey Sax, another Englishman in Hollywood, directs this big budget movie intended as a pilot for a Doctor Who series on network television.Taking the mantle of the Doctor, this time in his eighth incarnation, was the dreamy Paul McGann. Daphne Ashbrook played his companion-in-waiting, Dr Grace Holloway, alongside Jee Yee Tso as Chang Lee, who falls under the spell of the Master - this time played fabulously by Eric Roberts. You can listen to and see the film clip for The Safety Dance by Canadian new wave outfit Men Without Hats here.Theme by Our Colin (2019). Col, Dan, and Steven find things going suspiciously wrong, and the station under attack from the giant WIRRN, deadly creatures who, in their lust for power, now threaten the future of the whole Human Race…New To Who are back with a look at THE ARK IN SPACE, the first story proper of the vaunted Hinchcliffe and Holmes era of Classic Who (Seasons 12 to 14).The story is written by Robert Holmes, rewriting John Lucarotti’s original script, while Philip Hinchcliffe takes the reins from Barry Letts as producer for the first time – at the ripe old age of 29! It boasts some beautiful set designs by Roger Murray-Leach complemented by gorgeous direction by Rodney Bennett and a haunting score from Australia’s own Dudley Simpson, while Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen, and Ian Marter are wonderful as one of the all-time very best TARDIS teams. With echoes of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick from 1968 and foreshadowing Ridley Scott’s Alien of 1979, THE ARK IN SPACE combines existential and body horror genres to tell the story of cryogenically frozen human colony that revives only to find themselves in the midst of an insectoid alien horror that feeds on their bodies and souls! The cover of the original imprint of the 1976 Target novelisation for THE ARK IN SPACE is used with the kind permission of Chris Achilleos. NEW TO WHO - GHOST LIGHTPerth, 2018In the sleepy, rural parish of Perth, New To Who is by far the most imposing edifice. The villagers shun the grim pod, but the owners, the reclusive and controversial Dan and Steven, receive occasional visitors. The Reverend Nathan Bottomley and James Sellwood (of the Flight Through Entirety podcast), have travelled from Sydney to refute Dan and Steven's blasphemous theories of Doctor Who.The very last story filmed and the third to last story screened of Classic Doctor Who, GHOST LIGHT presents a dark, twisted version of Victoriana that - when scratched - reveals something nasty (and supremely intelligent) beneath.Sylvester McCoy's performance as the Seventh Doctor matures into a more Machiavellian figure, seemingly manipulating not just events but also his companion, Ace, played by the wonderful Sophie Aldred.Again drawing on a number of literary and cultural influences, lifelong fan Marc Platt turns in a stupendously funny, macabre, and smart script that the production team then realised into perhaps the greatest 'oddball' story of the entire era.The cover of the original imprint of the 1990 Target novelisation for GHOST LIGHT is used with the kind permission of Alister Pearson. So do tune in to find out what happened when the podcasts got together. Hint: They had a TON of fun. Before that, of course, Rob and Dave do a quick whip around some recent Doctor Who news. "I love testicle head!" Materialising on a sand pit alien planet - this time in black and white - our heroic trio, Daniel, Col, and Steven, discover the ice tombs of Telos, now home to the hibernated Cybermen led by the terrifying Cyber Controller! Perhaps the apotheosis of Doctor Who's "Base Under Siege" genre that was a staple of 1967's Season Five (aka the "Monster Season"), TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN - written by the creators of the Cybermen, Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis - is laden with atmosphere and an all-pervading sense of an impending menace. Not without its narrative and representation problems, it nonetheless remains a classic example of a story-telling blueprint from Doctor Who history that is still used to this day.  Special thanks again to Alister Pearson for his kind permission for the use of his redone cover of Jeff Cummins' original for the Target novelisation of Tomb of the Cybermen, written by Gerry Davis. © all original music copyright New To Who 2016 and 2017

Doctor Who's largest ever watching audience of 16 million people tuned in to watch this at the time, and none of them were wrong to do so.  Written by DOUGLAS ADAMS, at a time just before he became famous for his HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY series, this story is widely seen as one the greatest Classic Who stories of all time, consistently rating in the Top 10.  Filled with moments of comedic genius, a frisson of fun, and a lot of love in a blend of crime caper and sci-fi genres, this is also the story that saw TOM BAKER and LALLA WARD fall in love and eventually get married (but, sadly, not for long). Cité de l'amour/la mort, indeed! Doctor Who's silver jubilee season kicked off in incredible style with a return to its very beginnings set in 1963, and a London already infiltrated by Daleks.  Written by BEN AARONOVITCH, this story established what Doctor Who could and would be in the 1990s - and beyond. The story also introduces many of the more domestic and character-driven elements we would later see when the series returned in 2005, most notably in its foregrounding of a sparky London teenage girl as the show's co-protagonist.
